Hello
Piss
how did you put this comment in hours before the upload date?!
really like your work man, keep it up!
The final scene of Robert Pattinson’s distorted screaming is genuinely haunting
same. it left me feeling… disturbed i guess
Zalgo scream also rip headphone users with the massive sound friction in those screams, this is why we don't look directly at lighthouse bulbs..it's a lot of watts
Indeed
@@canijust101 getting rejected from heaven has its cons, what Winslow experienced with the distorted screaming must have been insanity
I think it feels so out of place because the movie has the appearance as if it was made in the 30s where they wouldn't really have the type of tech to distort the voice like that. Creeps me out too.
These last few "to the numbers" gags have been nothing short of incredible. Props to ya James!
I second that.

The lighthouse is basically just about Robert Pattinson and Dafoe fighting over an oscar than neither one of them wins
Too soon.

Oscars are rigged, they don't mean shit these days. Let's just appreciate the performance of these actors unbiased by money, favors and politics.
I can't imagine seeing this in theaters with no subtitles. There's no way anyone understood more than 30% of the dialogue.
I saw this by myself after driving an hour and a half in a pouring rainstorm to the only theater near me showing it. It was truly the most bonker theater experience I’ve ever had.
Well, me and my friend saw it in theaters and we understood most of their speech. But we also live on an island with a lot of different accents so maybe that’s why it was easier for us?
and still this is nothing compared to shakespeare I watched the tragedy of macbeth and my brain almost over heated trying to understand what was said
I went to an special screening with subtitles and even then it was a bit difficult to parse 😅
I understood it just fine.
The only thing that could have made James' monologue better is chelsea saying "fine you win I'll like the video" at the end
ahahahahahahahah niceee

Honestly should have counted the gull as a kill just because.
“BAD LUCK TO KILL A SEABIRD!!”
Damn one comment that doesn’t feel right
aint a human
Well in this universe they may or may not be dead sailors to I'd count it.
Definitely the most killedest character of 2019. Absolutely brutal.
I rewatched and just realized, Wake said his first wickie that went insane due to the lighthouse had one eye. Winslow is being tormented by a one-eyed seagull. I feel hella stupid
movies are subjective, that could mean nothing, i thought of the seagul as a reference to cyclops
@@zyourzgrandzmaz - Probably both, and even more. This movie has layers.
@@zyourzgrandzmaz The lighthouse is like one big ol' cyclops as well, innit?
And they do a lot of wrestlin' with them one-eyed snakes too, come to think of it...
@@zyourzgrandzmaz its pretty heavily implied, Wake even mentions that seagulls are the souls of dead sailors, you don't put that dialogue into a movie for no reason. The one-eyed seagull is definitely the soul of the one-eyed man.
I had to rewatch it second time for the seagull because of the one eye second. Don’t worry you’re not stupid
This is how I interpreted this movie. The whole thing was a spiritual allegory. Thomas Howard was his real name, and him being on the island was him being stuck in Purgatory with a chance for salvation after he chose not to save the real Winslow. The light of the lighthouse was the entrance to Heaven that Thomas was trying to get to, and Thomas Wake was the gate keeper/guardian angel trying to help him obtain salvation, and the logbook was a record of Howard's sins (even Wake's name can be seen as a spiritual connection to Howard, "Thomas" "Wake"). He was testing Howard and during his time in Purgatory, and didn't want him to see himself as an evil person, which is why he didn't want him to "spill the beans". Howard lost his chance at salvation by killing Wake, which is why when he tried to go to the light (Heaven), he was cast out and fell into the darkness below (Hell). Seeing him being disemboweled by the seagulls at the end was his eternal punishment (the seagulls throughout the movie either representing angels, demons, or the souls of other sailors who either achieved salvation, damnation, or were stuck in Purgatory, like the one eyed man/seagull).
Hey, I have the similar theory! The purgatory/judgement thing in general just kind of... makes the most sense to me personally lol.
Specifically however, in a second half of the theory, I've got a suspicion that Thomas is some kind of a sea god, maybe a son of Poseidon, tasked with the judgment and testing of the young man.
That would explain the tentacles, the mermaid (greek gods, even gods in general in mythology, tended to shapeshift a ton), and the Promethean reference at the end.
@@fockingreat1125 Wake is Proteus, son of Poseidon. He calls himself the brother of Triton and refers to the god of the sea as his father during the lobster scene. And yeah Howard is Prometheus / humanity.
I agree except I think he murdered the dude on purpose and lies about it, like he lies about killing the gull. I think how brutal he kills the gull is also meant to show us he is always murderously unhinged from the start and was capable of killing Winslow outright. He's up close to the back of the guy's head in the brief flashbacks, not standing a distance away watching an accident.
Just read all of your theories, really good way of looking at it 👍.
holy shit yeah
Rule 1) Never kill a sea bird.
Rule 2) Never insult Willem Dafoe’s cooking
@I drink your milkshake appreantly that's rule 3.
Rule 4) Don't be spilling your beans.
Rule 5) Don't try and twist words out of my head
Rule 6) Never overdrink
Rule 7) don’t strand yourself on an island after killing somebody
My theory is that this whole thing is a wild hallucination by the dying “Winslow” getting his guts eaten out after getting pulled out of the river. Thomas is satan who’s tormenting “Winslow” for his sins and lies. And the final scene where he ascends the lighthouse and sees the light is him seeing the light of God and being rejected, him falling down the stairs is his decent into hell.
Its all about greek mythology
Wicklash true I didn’t think about that
@@garrettshedd9186 interesting..👍👍👍
Garrett Shedd I can see it now
If the lighthouse is Heaven, why the semen and why thomas (the devil) could go their and feel pleasure?I think Winslow was trying to forget his sins (he murdered his ex-coworker - represent by the gull), Thomas was his guilt or his bad side. The whole movie is the fight inside his mind (good x evil) (accept or deny) (remember or forget) The moment winslow remember / accepts what he did (open the lighthouse) his good side is crushed (represented by his death and the gull eating him)
I live in Nova Scotia, not far from where this film was shot, and I got to see it before it premiered in theaters at our local film festival. I got to meet both Robert Eggers and Willem Defoe, and hear them talk about the movie. It was such an incredible experience to see on the big screen, and this movie is always gonna be special to me because of that.
That honestly sounds like the best and most perfect experience one could have with a movie. I’d kill to have traded places with you. Did you actually get to talk with them btw or was it more like they did a post meet and greet or introduction to the showing?
Holly Morrison Wow! God bless you🥰
@@Royal_Fortune well they both went up to introduce the movie and answer some questions from the audience. After the movie there was a gala that Willem Defoe went to, and I got to talk to him a bit there. He's a lot shorter then you would think 😂

Kinda mad the One-Eyed Seagull wasn't on the count. Yeah, it's not how the rules work, but that sequence is iconic!
Bad luck to kill count a sea bird

I'm so sick of horror movies being snubbed by the Academy. Not only did Dafoe and Pattinson deserve nominations, but I'd say the costume designer deserved wins for this film and The Witch. Midsommar is another one that should've won that category, and also given Florence Pugh a nom.
In my opinion there should be more award shows and categories especially in the animation realm
I think both of them should've been nomiated 100%, but in my Opinion Joaquin Phoenix deserved winning the 2019 Oscar...But I absolutely agree with you
Oh yeah horror films are always snubbed, and it's annoying since horror arguably gives out the most in actors, here's some examples of horror movie performances that should've been nominated
Robert Shaw - Jaws
Donald Pleasence - Halloween
Sigourney Weaver - Alien
Jack Nicholson - The Shining
Kurt Russell - The Thing
Linda Hamilton - The Terminator (I do consider the first Terminator as horror)
Robert Englund - A Nightmare on Elm Street
Jeff Goldblum - The Fly
Even modern Horror Film performances
Allison Williams - Get Out
Lupita Nyong'o - Us
Toni Collette - Hereditary
Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Robert Pattinson - The Lighthouse
Emily Blunt - A Quiet Place
Essie Davis - The Babadook
Elisabeth Moss - The Invisible Man
Natalie Portman - Annihilation
I mean so many good horror films come out and yet the academy always ignores them mostly for dramas, the Academy Awards are always a joke, and will forever be biased.
lets relax w the pugh nom
Awards shows are not a good measure of talent this is widely known you can pay your way to the top
Personally, what I think is that the reason he started screaming when he saw what was in the lens is that it was just an ordinary lamp. Its then that he realized that for most of what happened, there was a more logical explanation. And the reason why he was screaming is because he realized he just killed a man in cold blood for what he thought was for an unbelievable treasure/beauty, but it was for nothing, and the reason wake always tended the light house is because it was the closest he could get to privacy in the cramped space they were given as their living quarters.
This is such a grounded take
It makes a lot of sense with the analogy of Prometheus. The lighthouse is just fire, but to humanity and the gods it was something so much greater.
Nah I think he was a massive goober and touched the lamp, burning his hand. Your evaluation is better in every category, but mine involves him being a massive goober
@Spark Zuckerbum why thank you
how does that explain the tentacle and strange noises though

When Wakes like “you’re fond of me lobster ain’t ya?” It was really sad
I think the new chucky kill count is
You can tell how much James likes using the pirate voice, I hope he gets another chance to whip out the salty dialogue in another count!
Hope it becomes a bit like BUSINESS
James is getting more and more theatrical for every kill count and I’m loving it
After the pandemic, he's gonna be a cinematic photographer
yup
I was shocked how well Robert Patterson acted on this movie.
wait till you see good time
robert is seriously an amazing actor- he blows me away w a majority of his films
@@lizturley9542 The Twilight films made people think he was a shit actor when it was because of the bad writing and him being saddled with a character even he hated playing. Kristen Stewart on the other hand was a bad actress before Twilight, was a bad actress in it and has continued to be a bad actress after it despite Twilight fans attempts to use the Bella character to defend her with "That's how Bella acts in the book" even though Stewart gives the same emotionless "I'm slowly reciting the script word for word like a robot" performance in every film she's been in.
@@Xehanort10 lmao whatever you say bud, it's almost like shes a character actor who play bland bitchy 20 y/os who's been in some fantastic shit like Into The Wild. But sure take the movie with the worst script ever written and it's her fault the character is boring 💁♀️
Even in tenet Robert really fits that part I’m sure he’ll do incredibly well as Batman
His "Lets get to the numbers" are getting SO MUCH BETTER
I watch this “to the numbers” speech with a single tear rolling down my cheek. The beauty. The sophistication. The art. An absolute tour de force.

THAT SENT ME TO THE ORBIT
Same xD and normally I don't like fart humor
The way James covers every nudity with cartoon seagulls had me cracking up
Winslow’s distorted scream when staring into the light was one of the most upsetting and uncomfortable things I’d ever seen in a movie theater. It just really bothered me, deep in my core. Which proves it did exactly what it wanted to. I was thinking about that moment for months.

I love how much interpretation there is, like one theory being these two characters actually being the same person as he’s forever tortured in aquatic limbo
Wasn't this slightly based on a true story? About the 3 men who went missing while tending a light house after 5 weeks and they found journals about weather that didn't match what the actual weather was on those days and just odd things? The name is escaping me but that was a true story.
It was slightly based on a true story, though not that one. To my recollection, it's based on the Smalls Lighthouse Tragedy, in which two wickies were known to quarrel frequently. One of them, Thomas Griffith, died in a freak accident and the other, Thomas Howell, was afraid that he would be accused of murder should he try to dispose of the body. As such, he kept the body around until it started to decompose. He tried to make a makeshift coffin for him and hanging it upon an outside shelf. However, stiff winds eventually destroyed the coffin and caused Griffith's body to repeatedly bang against the window, emotionally traumatizing Howell to the point where he was unrecognizable to his friends after he came back.
Hope this helped :)

2019's best film. Couldn't believe how many theaters dropped this movie. As well as not seeing it promoted. The Academy should been ashamed for ignoring this masterpiece. This film made me a believer out of Robert Pattinson, and convinced me that he's going to be a great Batman.

2019 had some good movies.
incredible acting too
If you didn’t know. Prometheus defied the gods and wanted to know everything and share everything. Proteus holds all the knowledge but will never share. Winslow /Thomas is Prometheus and Thomas wake is proteus.
In my opinion it’s not Thomas wake whos proteus but it’s instead the actual light at the top of the lighthouse
Leon yes, it could also be interpreted in this way. That’s why this movie is so good it can be seen in so many different ways.
James and Chelsea talk about this in the podcast review 😊
Also Hercules saved him
This kid
When James pronounced “The Witch” as the “V VITCH” I actually stood up and yelled YES because that’s how I’ve been pronouncing it for years!
That's just what it's called
I pronunce it like bitch lmao
I remember doing a story like this at school. It was about three lighthouse workers that went suddenly missing on a stormy night, with no evidence that points towards a murder or a kidnapping, yet there was some wierd evidence that points towards supernatural events, like crows circling the lighthouse and one of the lighthouse workers going crazy. I think it's called the story of flannan island.
This movie was so trippy, and not a psychedelic in sight.
Something cool to pock up on...when winslow falls down the stairs of the light house he breaks his leg...just like thomas has a broken leg with an un explained backstory
And he loses his right eye to the seagulls, just as the previous lighthouse keeper and the seagull were missing theirs. This movie is insanely dense.
"What is that, a tentacle? Wake might have an internet connection up there!"
One of my favorite horror movies. Great Kill Count!
Ah wake! A fellow cultured brethren
glad to hear that shot w/ wake beaming light into winslow’s eyes was based on a painting because my immediate reaction to that shot was “i would love to have that as a painting on my wall.”

Love that James' monologue at the end is done totally without blinking, like Willem Dafoe's. What a cool touch :)

I love that there's a slight element of cosmic horror here making a question what's real what's not to see and what's simply the delusions of two isolated men
James: Mentions how awesome the Tales from the Hood 2 numbers bit is going to be.
Also James: Doesn't mention he's going to fucking curse our devices for The Lighthouse.

This movie makes me believe Robert Pattinson can become Batman.
He was good but Dafoe was OUTSTANDING
If not batman then a really good arkham inmate
As well as tenet
Double C stop motion the Director and crew of twilight told him he would be fired unless he acted more flowery and happy instead of like a vampire should be because he wanted to be evil and deep and dark but the director wouldn’t let him.
Yeah, but Dafoe is the Magnum opus of this movie
I don’t think this would’ve worked as well if this was coloured
yeah, it wouldn’t work without the square ratio either. everything fits together so well in this movie, it’s a literal cinematic gem
definitely wouldve taken away from the isolated and claustrophobic feeling i get from this movie lol but truly horrifying fr
Or in a "normal" aspect ratio
It's hard to believe that this movie was made in 2019. There are some things that ground it in the present. Like the well done effects.
The black and white adds a certain layer of misery and weight to it. To Kill A Mockingbird had a similar effect, though to a more reflective, contemplative effect.
I’ve seen a lot of theories for this movie and they are all very well-thought out and plausible. I’m not sure what it is, but I will say that when I first saw trailers for this movie, I thought it would be something of a re-telling of “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” A man kills a sea bird, and he and his crew are stuck at sea until the man stones. I don’t know if it holds up now, but I thought it was an interesting idea.
The Oscars became a joke when they didn't recognize this movie more, I know it was nominated for cinematographer, but it deserves way more than just that, from set design, to the music, which I think was the best of 2019, but like it's just a joke
(I know the Oscars have always been a joke but still)
Oscars never liked these horror/thriller movies, even though it’s a period piece. It’s a shame, but kinda expected.
oscars have always been a joke tbh i’m just happy joaquin phoenix finally got one and brad pitt
Parasite was too good not to win.
Agreed. This film and uncut gems got snubbed.
John Batten uncut gems was weird asf and the dialogue is so scattered. I was like STFU MY EARS!!!! 😂

@@jeffthemercenary that’s kinda sad. You don’t watch movies in theaters?
I literally went back to rewatch this movie just so I could be caught up again to watch this vid and it wasn't until you pointed out that the gull had a single eye that I realized it was Wake's original partner, who was also missing an eye. I'm also pretty sure the body Howard finds at the top of the lighthouse is actually him, dressed as Winslow. Maybe foreshadowing that the lighthouse would ultimately be his death? Regardless, that monologue was truly impressive and I'm glad we're seeing more unconventional horror movies getting made.
Anyone else notice before the bird dies it’s propped up behind James but when it dies it’s down on its back?
Did Spongebob pass his drivers test tho?
I have watched this movie in the theaters and the person that was sitting on my side literally screamed "WTF" when the movie ended. She just represented everyone.
love how once the seabird dies James puts the prop bird on its back when before it was flying
The fact that this movie is already a year old is mind-boggling and shows how fast 2020 is going by.
James: *delivers an incredible one-take monologue that still manages to sound epic despite making jokes about UA-cam*
Me: *turns to the previous 200+ "to the numbers" jokes* I think we have our winner.
