The title's meaning doesn't carry over to the film, but it comes from the end of the book. Rather than a phone call at her graduation, Lector instead writes her a letter asking if the lambs have stopped screaming, and the last line of the book is that Clarice is sleeping peacefully "in the silence of the lambs."

    • @coolnerdlll6053

Just because it's not said doesn't mean it was removed. The first time I watched the scene with Clarice's story, I immediately knew "Oh, the 'Silence of the Lambs' is Catherine getting rescued". Lecter does everything but say it.

Fun Fact: During the well scene where Buffalo Bill is crying before shouting, "PUT THE F***ING LOTION IN THE BASKET!", those were Ted Levine's real tears. He said before in interviews that he never hated playing Buffalo Bill for the movie, but there were times where he really didn't like it purely because of how cruel he had to be to Brooke Smith (Catherine), even though none of it was real. So when they did that well scene together, Brooke actually improvised the line, "I want my mommy!" and that bit of improvisation caught him so off guard and that was just it for poor Ted. He just burst into tears, and everyone liked it so much that they wanted to keep it in the movie.

When you think about it, it's amazing how campy this movie is... or rather how campy this movie could be. Hannibal Lecter utters so many corny one-liners ("A census taker once tried to test me... Love your suit" and the like), and, shit, the movie concerns one serial killer who pauses in between murders to appreciate classical music, and another who skins women in order to turn himself into one. It sounds like the stuff of godawful lurid schlock, but the writing and tone of both the novel and the movie elevate it. It's really a remarkable achievement, and I still don't altogether understand how they pulled it off.

I will always love this film. My dad passed away in 2016, very unexpectedly. He wasn’t great at taking care of me as a kid because he struggled with an addiction to alcohol. Because of this, whenever I visited for the weekend, he’d kind of let me just a watch whatever. The Silence of the Lambs was the first horror film I ever watched (I was maybe 5 and my dad was passed out).
This film gets all the credit for the birth of my love for horror, and it always reminds me of my dad. He had such a kind soul, but addiction ended up taking him away from me and everyone who loved him.
I struggled with my own addiction to opiates and heroin for 10 years. I finally got the help I needed and now I can give my daughter the best version of me; clean and sober. I’ll be 4 years clean in July.
Sorry this comment got so personal but that’s one of the best things about films in general. The way they evoke certain memories and situations and how those films will forever be tied to them

That’s the whole point of their relationship. Many other agents had been sent in to talk to Hannibal but he went stone cold on each and every one of them. Then walks in Clarice. A fresh faced trainee, who’s still green in almost every way, but also has purpose. She’s not an FBI agent to make headlines, she’s an agent because she’s trying to honor her father. That and her tact and politeness towards the world makes her worthy in Hannibal’s eyes to gain help from him. Plus after being sexually assaulted by Miggs, I’m sure that also was a huge turnaround point for Hannibal as he actually felt sorry for her. She was definitely different from those around her and he knew that.

Anthony Hopkins gets all the praise, and its deserved, but Jodie Fosters 'Clarice' is my favorite part of the film. I know she won an oscar too, but she gives an all-time great performance same as Hopkins. I think her character was equally impactful on film too. She walks that line perfectly of being vulnerable while remaining a strong detective.

    Liver - Liver
    Beans - Fava Beans
Wine - Chianti (This was the change the movie made because most people didn't know that Amarone was a wine. So they changed it to a popular wine at the time)
He was basically trying to tell the detective "I'm off my meds". Something she didn't pick up on.

Hot take: I think that Buffalo Bill should at least be considered for the Golden Chainsaw. The whole movie is about tracking him down, Clarice Starling finally gets to complete her arc and save the victim, the way it is shot with the night vison and blackout scenes still has me on the edge of my seat, and the way that Bill dies looks almost like a moth, with the goggles representing the eyes and the twitching reminding me of a dying butterfly. Although it's a gun kill, the setup and payoff are great, as well as having a lot of motivation to see this creep get taken down for good. What do y'all think?

This is in my opinion, one of the top three movies of ALL TIME. It won the big five at the oscars, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Picture, and Best Screenplay. Phenomenal work of art with amazingly complex characters and Jodie's portrayal of Clarice is something we will never see again - Clarice Starling is a very complex and relatable character who isn't overpowered, impossibly strong for her size- but rather an intelligent individual who is relentlessly embracing her femininity. Through her pure intentions and authenticity, Jodie's character became a symbol of divine power motivated by pure desires to save weaker individuals in her world. Despite the fact she will never be as physically strong as the men who tower over her, she preservers because she sees saving other innocent lives as a parallel to saving the lambs. The whole point Jodie was trying to make was that in the past, since women didn't have the strength or "heroism" that could compare to men, Hollywood often resorts to crafting lazy, unrealistic female heroines (i.e marvel women) who possess unfathomable qualities and don't come across as relatable at all. Besides this, often the only redeeming quality of women's characters in film is their attractiveness, or their relevance is limited to being as the love interest to their male costars. The Silence of the Lambs changed that when Clarice Starling appeared on screen. The producers took the time to flesh out Jodie's character, Clarice, thereby allowing this talented actress to portray an authentic female role who embodies the characteristics of someone motivated by a well-developed moral compass rather than such trivial, one-dimensional motifs (a relief for audiences). She is then juxtaposed against her male colleagues, almost all of whom are motivated purely by advancement rather than the cause itself.

The way he's trying not to giggle the entire time they're talking, the butterfly picture on the wall, Clarice quietly unfastening her gun holster...it's so damn good. And the night vision scene, jesus. There's a moment in the book during that scene where Bill is admiring how pretty her hair is and thinking to himself that even though she's too petite for him to use her skin, he thinks he'll keep her hair. Fun fact: due to this being filmed in Pittsburgh, my pap (who was a city officer) was actually in this movie, and was one of the cops at the elevator scene. He was also in a later scene that included all the officers.

Thank you for talking about the Queer rep around 15:30. Its always nice to hear people talk about the nuances about idenities and how the depiction of idenities can affect real life people. As someone who is trans, it makes me feel seen. And not just recognized, but feel like others see me as human too, not just a caricature of stereotypes. With the expanding representation in other medias showing a wider range of Queer characters, it makes the characters that are Queer, Queer coded, or are thought to be Queer, in older media that wouldn't have been the best representation feel like just another part of the whole. Like, I wouldn't be very happy if Dr. Frank N Furter was the ONLY depiction of Queerness, because he isnt exactly the best of people, but because more and more people are creating characters that are more on the morally Good side, he becomes a cool camp villian (I love him so much, I aspire to have Furter's confedence and without the homicidal tendancies).
Horror is just the coolest because you can put just so much of EVERYTHING in it. A single character could take up a BOOKS worth of analysis on who they are, what they mean to the audience, how they were inspired. (I guess that could be any character), but for horror I think it forces the character to be more than a base personality, it forces them to show the audience who that character is in the worst of times.
Kind of like the idea that you show your true colors when shit hits the fan. How you respond to chaos and strife is who you really are, and that allows people to look past simple traits and focus on the PERSON.
Horror allows there to be Queer characters that go beyond the title of "Non-cis" and "Non-heterosexual", it allows them to have greater potential. Just like any other trait that would blind the audience and see that character as just that one trait.
    I love horror so much!
(thank you for all the work you and your team do to bring Horror knowledge to the people. It allows people to get base information that, if they find it really intresting, could then do further research. Without you and your team, many people would never be exposed to the cool makings of horror and see that horror isn't just scary doom and gloom, its a lively art form that creates a thriving community that centers on the What-Ifs that are rearly every asked. Horror gives us rediculious stories and plots, plays them completely serious, and has the audience ask themselves "what if this happend to you?". I love it so much. Thank you Dead Meat team for sharing your passions with us!

And I love that Anthony Hopkins is being a prominent representation for the community.

This (along with Cloverfield and Pan’s Labyrinth) was one of the movies that I had to watch for my Intro to Film class in my first year of University. Because this was in 2020, it was all over Zoom, so we had to watch the movies on our own time. During the class that we were discussing it, one of my classmates changed their Zoom background to be one of the shots of Hannibal standing in the corner of his cell, staring at the camera. It was really creepy, and eventually my professor noticed and had a laugh about it. Whoever did that was a genius, well played sir
