  • the last Pentax film camera and its brilliant ..the blurb
The MZ-S was a "clean sheet of paper" design that re-thought most aspects of Pentax's camera interface and appearance.[5] Design goals included simpler operation, small size and light weight without sacrificing the sophisticated features required to be competitive. The MZ-S design returned to a more conventional one compared to the PZ-1p; the shoe for external flash and accessories returned to the top of the pentaprism housing, instead of the unusual right-handgrip position used on the older camera. The status LCD moved from atop the pentaprism to the top of the camera's right shoulder, like many competing designs. However, instead of a flat camera top, the Pentax designers angled the top plate towards the user at a 30° angle for easier viewing.
The camera featured an autofocus system based on six linear CCD sensors, on-film data recording and an MTF autoexposure mode which chooses the aperture for maximum sharpness.

Professional camera with excellent technical parameters. Because of the ergonomics, some users hate it, others love it. Already unique, but worth the interest of collectors.

A lot of people don't understand the ergonomics until you hold one. Mine has the BG-10 and it just fits my hand like no other camera and I have a bunch of other cameras from Pentax, Fujifilm, Sony, and Canon.

Since not mentioned, I'll also highlight these have nice viewfinders and really slick-sounding, relatively (for a film SLR) quiet 1/6000 shutter and motorized film advance. The relative ease of HyperManual operation with green button means you tend to lean on that system from shot to shot rather than the (by modern standards) less accessible exposure compensation. It takes a little getting used to but works well.

Love the video. Subscribed! I own one with a BG-10 and it has a serial number that starts with triple 5. Best handling camera and shines when you have the star lenses.
For those that don't know, you can download the manual online and there are a ton of custom functions (for example, you can rewind the film leaving a tab or fully retracted). Also, there's a red LED that lights up when you press the button to remove the lens which is handy at night. Highly recommended to go throught the manual. :)

It has AE-L on the back easy to use with spot or all the other metering modes, so usually no need for exp. comp.
It needs the Pentax dedicated BG 10 battery grip with 4 x AA Alkaline or LiFe, it has a switch for them, because otherwise MZ-S works with 2 x CR2 that are expensive and don't last, specified for 40 X 36 exp without the blitz, but a set of new Panasonic were good for only 54 exposures...I bought new Duracell, never use them and those get depleted outside of the camera. The Pentax battery grip is nice, but made in China and the grip has some small rubber buffer pads on the camera side that also melt even worse. And the battery door on the grip looks not very strong, made from thin plastic.
Anywey the viewfinder has only 0.75x @ 92%, same magnification as Nikon F5 and over 0.74 of F6 and Contax RTS III ( RTS and RTS II have 0.86...) better then 0.7X of F4 and Pentax K1, but I'm realy not inspired by it, I feel no joy and no colling to use the camera. I used it a lot years ago, but not much anymore. The matrix is more then pretty good, with some + 0.1EV over.
I used wey more my K2 black from 1975 with 0.88X, even if the ground glass is worse is wey more inspireing, and K2 DMD, and LX with 0.90X with good ground glass but I hate the times superimposed over the frame on LX, but at least are on the right like on K2 that has them better outside the frame, like Contax RTS and not on the left like MEsuper/ME-F that are also not reliable, and also not fliped on the left like on the Nikon EL2, FE, FE2 ( 0.86X) FM3A ( 0.83x). And also my SF 10 with 0.82X bought only for the smc F 50 f1.7 mounted on it, but weirdly better then SFX snd SFX because it has spot and AE-L and SFX/SFXn doesn't have spot, was more productive with me, and Z1 with 0.8X also more productive. I have the MZ-S with the kit FA 24-90 f3.5-4.5 made in Taiwan, that is the worse Pentax lens I have, also with the original lens hood bought separate for the price of a lens and is useless. The lens render cold and with exaggerated contrast that eat details and stupid drowns the shadows in black ink, but if sky light is in the frame all contrast is lost and is just total damage with or without the hood, plus being IF is nice but has focal breathing and other things... Good that I have enough other lenses, both AF MIJ F and FA, and MF MIJ, mostly K and some M and A, best of the best carefully chosen for resolution and bokeh.
I have the first *istD but nothing new from Pentax. I don't like K1, 0.7X no wey, push for metering mode is stupid I wsnt switch, and I want dedicated push for Custom WB similar to *istD but better without the need to preset custom mode, and sure I want the AE-L to be kept on the back. I'm looking for K1 III if it has decent viewfinder magnification and also high eye point, I want over 0.8X and even 0.9X if the eye point is very good like 21-25mm. Hard to make but if not I'm not interested. And a fix 15 f2.8 without complex distortion, and a 90 f1.7 or 85 f1.6 with better bokeh then DFA 85 f1.4 focused at 1.5m that, that has pretty busy bokeh and the lens is huge. And a FF645 100-150 MP also with a decent viewfinder magnification. Pentax 645D was a crop and the viewfinder has worse magnification then the best FF35 SLRs ( not DSLRs...) and 645Z is even wey worse with stupid low magnification. I need FF645 @ 0.85X.

the BG10 is pretty hard to come by these days however my CR2 have last a good 20 or 30 rolls depending on the flash ...so you may have a power drain issue

@@28allday There is no power drain isue, 4 AA super alkaline last for years. Even when I was still using the camera a lot, 4AA on the grip were good for tens of roll films with a lot of AF. I was not using the camera flash, I had other external flashes. BG 10 was pretty hard to find even back then in 2005, there was only one @ BH @ 129 USD and I payed 200 USD to get it in my hands...and was Pentax original NIB but made in China. I checked the batteries yesterday, they need to be changed, and one of them was harder to pull out although it was not swollen and no leaking. The battery housings are pretty tight and if not perfectly round the batterys need to be rotated in a wey that fits. I need to replace the rubber buffer pads on the top of the battery grip, they are like black cream now...The lens hood PH-RBE 67mm was even wey harder to find, I found one in Germany and with luck an acquaintance brought it to me, and it was expensive; funny it's made in Japan for a lens made in Taiwan and it's pretty useless.
