  • Review of the Pentax PZ-1p.
Since the publication of my book "Photography: The F Manual", I received many questions about the best film and digital equipment to use, so I decided to start with review of the camera, lenses and accessories I use.

I just bought the Z-1. With power zoom lens this thing is so loud, but other then this it looks like pretty nice camera. Plastic, but it feels solid, there is no weird "rubber" surfaces, LED is solid, viewfinder is great. I feel as if this is more solid then some of new digital cameras, as everything works and it is more or less 30 years old camera. Made from plastic. It is really fantastic tool. No wonder that it was pro camera in Pentax lineup. Bit heavy, and ergonomics compared to modern DSLRs is kinda weird and bulky but I suppose it is matter of getting used to it. I doubt it will replace K2 full time, but it will be nice side camera just to have and use something different.
BTW - I just realized that I have more film cameras and film lenses then I have digital ones.

It's a great camera, I used it a lot with good success. But I never had a special personal feeling with that camera...

I loved the placing of the hotshoe on these cameras....
When used with a speedlight, it was perfectly balanced...

Good review. This camera quickly became the most used film camera in my collection. The only problem in my opinion is the lack of the a battery grip.

      big hands? :)

@@LuigiBarbano Small hands but the battery is quite expensive unless you buy it online. I usually keep an extra battery or second camera in case it dies while I'm shooting.
Although I will also say I'd take a camera with a big grip over one that is too small or has no grip. I really don't like the grip on those beginner dslrs from canon. My Pentax K-3 is heavy but it is very comfortable to hold.

@@CaTa_VT that battery really is a problem. Cost and not easy to find. After that camera I always looked for cameras with standard batteries.

This camera is fucking awesome! Auto zoom, hyper program/hyper manual, time lapse, mutli-exposure, auto bracketing...more features than a modern digital with film quality.

yes, it's a great camera. Downside the batteries.
      Personally I preferred the Mz-S.

Great review. I’m torn between going for one of these or the Mz-s. Which would you recommend?

They are pretty different. If you need very fast shutter speeds and high speed syncro flash, then this is the right one.
Personally I like much more the Mz-s.
The Mz-s has a stronger body, more user options and, something I think is essential, can be powered with cheap and easy to find AA batteries, if you have the battery grip. Also without the grip it is easier to find CR2 batteries than the PZ-1 batteries.
Then is a personal matter, the Mz-s is perfect in my hands... but it depends on the hands :)

I use my Pentax-m lenses on the PZ-1P without any problems.
