- Review of the Pentax MZ-S.
Since the publication of my book "Photography: The F Manual", I received many questions about the best film and digital equipment to use, so I decided to start with review of the camera, lenses and accessories I use.

one of my favourite cameras....
loved using it...
same for me! LX and MZ-S, two different camera philosophy and I loved them both.
Very good review Luigi. Thanks for posting it.
Thank you.
Pentax finally brought back something to make lens changing easy in the dark on the K-1. It has a white LED that illuminates the lens mount. Its crazy why some things are such good ideas and also cheap and easy to make aren't in all cameras.
Glad to know it came back in the K-1!
As you say, it's crazy to not have that in all cameras
Thanks for a great review Luigi. Really enjoyed watching this plus your other Gear Talk videos. I've just bought an MZ-S to go with my LX, Z-1P and K1 MkII. I think I may have too many Pentax cameras now!!
thanks. Never too many Pentax! ;)
I have an MZ-S, a Z1p, an MZ-3, a K-10, a K-7, a K-5, a K-5 IIs, a K-3, a K-3 II, two Q7s and a K-1. I will be first in the queue for the next full-frame camera from Pentax. I agree with Luigi: can't have too many :)
@@Gynra Not quite matching your 'stable' Brian, but I have now added an ME Super (my very first camera) and a Super A (which was my dream camera when I was a young lad!!) 😀. Currently, I have a roll of Ektar 100 in the MZ-S and am absolutely loving using it. For me, Pentax just nailed it with the design.
I saw this camera on Ebay and said...beautiful design...thinking of getting one 😁😁😁
for me one of the best camera design ever.
I just found your channel through a Pentax forum. Great work! How does this camera do with older manual focus lenses? Is it easy to focus?
It's easy... but still has an autofocus screen, so not easy like an LX or similar. I suppose there are focusing screen options for a better manual focus. I use it a lot with manual lenses and never had problems, but I have to be more careful focusing than with manual focus bodies.
The greater thing of that camera is the meter.
@@LuigiBarbano I have a Pentax SF1 and when I use manual lenses on it the focus conformation light tells me it's focus.
@@63MacGuy yes. it's the same with the Mz-s, but the focus. is on the focusing spot... I prefer to just focus where I want on the screen :)
The slanted/inclined design of the top panel is very cool indeed. I love my MZ-S! I was surprised by the learning that the MZ-S design was based on the first Pentax DSLR, the MZ-D or K-1. The MZ-D was first but did not make it beyond the prototype stage because allegedly the sensor failed and it was too expensive. Pentax recycled the design to produce the MZ-S instead. I always thought it was the other way round. Too bad the design did not make it further to the K-series of DSLRs. However, this design is used on the digital 645D/Z series by Pentax. I wonder if this was inherited from the MZ-S since the film 645 tops are flat.
I think was the reverse. MZ-D was a digital prototype that came after the MZ-S... but I could be wrong.
@@LuigiBarbano Yes, I thought the same. The common sense on the internet is that they were developed either alongside or the MZ-D was derived from the MZ-S. However, there was a thread in Pentaxforums which said MZ-D was first and MZ-S derived as some sort of emergency product re-using the design (they would never call it so). I cant find it, dont know where it is buried. The indicated years are also conflicting. MZ-S was released 2001, MZ-D was presented either 2000 or early 2001.
Whatever the real sequence of events was, which was first doesnt matter too much to me. I could be wrong too. Only Pentax knows the truth. The design was unique and it's a pity it wasnt used further somehow except maybe digital 645. And the feel and grip of the current K-1 (II) is also very nice, so I am not too sad.
That's interesting, thanks for the info.
My experience with digital Pentax ended with the *istD. I was in need for something better and I had to switch system, sadly Pentax was too slow to come out with a decent digital. I know K-1 is a great camera but was a little late for me.
@@LuigiBarbano Yeah, it's sad it took so long but that's the way it is. BTW, I found the forum post indicating the MZ-D design was recycled for MZ-S but it is not a definitive statement:
www.pentaxforums.com/forums/16-pentax-news-rumors/380655-hints-about-future-products-twitter-10.html#post4590871
Also, the post shows a mockup of a MZ-1 which seems to have transmitted some DNA into the K-1 and "K-New". MZ-1 was comtemplated as a 35mm camera and supposed follow-up to the LX.
Thank you, very interesting.
do you happen to know if I can use this with non perforated film?
Pretty sure you cannot.
@@LuigiBarbano thanks for the reply.
which lenses works with that body?
As for Pentax tradition all K bayonet lenses work with that body. You need the A if you want more advanced automatic exposure modes and the FA for the auto-focus... but you can even use the 42 screw mount with an adapter... and that is one of the reasons I like Pentax.
I hated the MZ-S. They removed all the things that made the PZ-1P a great camera. They reduced the highest shutter speed from 1/8000 to 1/6000. They reduced the flash synch from 1/250 to 1/180, they eliminated the programmable zoom lens ability, they moved the hot shoe from the right to the center, there by making the contrast control harder to use since it blocked the pop up flash. Nothing about the MZ-S was an improvement except the autofocus. Easily the worst Pentax film camera I ever owned. After 3 months of dealing with the short comings I sold it.
There were 2 kind of Pentax users, some loved the Pz-1 and hated the MZ-S the others exaltly the opposite. I never loved the PZ-1 but loved the MZ-S for its ergonomic.
Great thing is that there are many cameras and the matter is to find the one good for each of us.
I loved the design of the MZ-S but I totally agree with you the Z-1p was my bread and butter camera and I did earn a living from my two Z-1ps so I never bought the MZ-S because of the exact reasons you mentioned thanks for the reminder just exactly my reasons at that time,I later changed systems to Canon with because of digital the Canon 10d was my introduction to the Canon digital system I later bought the istD but it was not on the same level than Canon at that time so earned my living with Canon since then, though I still love Pentax
I like the MZ-S a lot, but for me, the Z-1p (PZ-1p) was the best film camera Pentax ever made.
I have the MZ-S and the worst thing is the 0.75X viewfinder magnification. With O-ME53 reach 0.88 as K2 but the eye point gets to low, and for glasses wey wey too low...The second worst is the melting rubber plugs and pads on the battery grip. The third worst is the plastic gear on the motor. I'm fine with the rest. If you want a faster shutter get a Minolta Alpha 9 with 1/12000s ( 9xi had that too in '92), but with 200ASA or even 100, with f1.4 is still not enough for daylight, even for f1.7 you need to wait for less light, or use a ND filter or polariser but those are prone to flare...
@@loochan325 I honestly don't remember much about the viewfinder magnification. Indeed, I don't remember what shoots I did with it. I just remember being so disappointed with the backwards changes that I sold it after three months.
