If you're going for the most compact, mechanical, manual SLR, I have to go for the Pentax MX. Wayyy better viewfinder vs OM-1, swappable focus screen, and it can use modern glass like the 43mm limited, or the older 40mm Pentax-M. Great coverage of the options though, and you can't go wrong with an Olympus in that slot 😁

  • @RhettAnderson

I love the OM-1, but the OM-2 more. I understand what you're saying on running without batteries, but I've been shooting with battery-powered film cameras since the 80s with no trouble. I always had a spare.

Hi. Very interesting video. I'm an absolute beginner in Analogue and I've been shooting various Kodak cine films from analogue revival due to the cost effectiveness vs dedicated still camera film. I've been developing at home and scanning on a cheap Epson scanner. I'm upgrading to a DSLR scanning setup imminently. I've never used Photoshop or really done any editing of my pics yet. I was wondering if you use a specific tool in your software to do this or do you need knowledge of photo editing to achieve this? I video on using whatever software you use specifically with cine film would be fantastic if you're ever stuck for ideas! Keep up the good work 👍🏻

Nice video. I guess it is different for each one of us as to what is the best film camera. I usually tended to gravitate towards my plastic fantastic Nikon F75 until recently for it's small size, awesome feature set for what it was marketed as and the ability to put on some amazing Nikon glass. I now also have acquired an F80, a significantly minor upgrade over the F75 but phenomenal nonetheless. Else it is the Canon EOS Elan 7E for the Canon side of things. And on the mechanical side, it is usually the Pentax K1000 or the Nikon FM2n or F2 which is a monster camera. Cheers!

Enjoyed the video! Serial number that starts with 5 is most likely gonna have brass mirror motor cog. I had one with the battery grip. I have never missed an exposure with this camera. I agree it is a great camera though I sold it off because I just couldn't justify keeping it. I replaced it with the cheaper black MZ-3 with a factory brass cog. I also have the MZ-6 with a factory brass cog. The MZ cameras have a bad reputation of breaking because of the plastic cogs that break but if one can find copies with brass cogs, they are really good cameras and the metering is quite spot on. Not to mention that modern lenses can be used on them. I am using the latest HD FA 35mm f2. Ah but of course I have the F 28mm 2.8 just because this is a 28mm channel.

The eye focus control works brilliantly for me, there is also a DoF sensor in the top left of the screen, which you didn't mention. I get the feeling you don't really know this camera very well. The top plate, by the way, is metal not plastic! In all the years I've been using my 50e the door latch has never failed. The 50e is a quality SLR camera which, like anything else, needs to be looked after and handled with respect.

    • @28allday
      @28allday 21 день тому

I do use my camera, but there are certain features, like the DOF button, that I never use. You made a good point-I should have mentioned that. My camera’s door snapped open mid-roll, and I found out that you can buy a latch replacement from eBay. After a quick Google search, I discovered that faulty latches are quite common, not just with some Canon models, but also with Nikon cameras like the F100, which is known for its weak door latch. Recently, the door on my Canon Elan 7 broke as well. It’s just plastic and age; these cameras were never designed to last this long. Anyway, I hope you keep enjoying your camera. Thanks for the comment!

Awesome review, thank you Gavin! Now that you have used both the EOS 300x as well as the EOS 30, which one you prefer the most when taking out for a shoot? Are any of the features of EOS 30 (physical dials for drive / AF) worth the extra weight and size?

I would add that the much more difficult thing these days than storage, it's actually the connectivity and how you transfer the data, and keep it in sync. I use rclone to sync from NAS to cloud, both gPhotos and pCloud. For phones, they sync to gPhotos and to home NAS using Resilio Sync. Cloud and local are crazy cheap now. I have a 8x12TB with 2 parity drives, 60TB usable. For $100/year I have 2TB of gPhotos, which is just phones, and I bought the 10TB "lifetime plan" on pCloud for $1200 back in 2022.

Hello, I have seen several of your videos about the Minolta 9Xi and other Minolta cameras and I really liked them. I am a Minoltas collector and have most of the cameras from the SRL 7 to the Dinax 7 as well as the 6 Mp 7d. Like the X-700 and the 7Xi, the 700Si was chosen at the time as the camera of the year, but unlike the others and despite being a very capable camera on paper, the 700Si has a design error. The plastic of the grip breaks, after a few years the material breaks in the same place, apparently as it ages it does not withstand certain stresses produced in its design. I bought three and the same thing happened to all three and in the same place. Surely the plastic aged poorly due to the place where they were kept but it cannot be a coincidence that they broke in that same place. I treat my cameras very well and they broke while in the box. The one that has no problems is the 800Si and I recommend it.

I have an Ursa12k with S35 and a Takumar 28mm lens. What can I do so that the image section is a real 28mm and not so zoomed in? I really want to have the “real” 28mm look on the camera. Should I buy a 20mm lens so that it looks like a real 28mm thanks to the crop / FF to S35 conversion? Unfortunately I don't understand.

Interesting one the real “28mm “ if your referring to cinema would be what you have 28mm on a super 35 …but if you want the full frame field of view then you should put a speed booster on the camera …if your ursa is EF mount you may be able to use canons SB which I use on the C70 I know people have mounted it on Komodo’s as well that will give the equivalent FOV of full frame so your 28mm will be full frame ….hope that helps

The adaptall 2 system was a great idea. I still use an SP90mm f2.5 manual lens with macro and it has impressive sharpness and color reproduction on my D700.

I am trying to remember the original Ektar from the early nineties and if my memory serves me correctly, the roll of film was bought with pre-paid film processing. I remember the prints coming back from Kodak in a fancy Kodak Ektar box.

I don't think the pre-paid envelope was provided with the film like Kodachrome. Rather, you bought the pre-paid envelope separately for Kodak to develop and print it to get the 'best results' from the emulsion. Not sure if anyone else remembers this?

Great video. In your experience, is there any loss of image quality with a speed booster?

    • @28allday

I think the canon speed booster for the C70 is one of the best I have seen , and also the metabones booster are pretty solid choice the vitlrox ones I have had are good I think alot of it comes down to adjusting the back focus on them correctly ...so its not so much about quality of image but is it set up correctly for focusing I think thats were people have issues ...there was lump of extra glue in a viltrox SB I had which stop it focusing correctly once the glue was remove it was fine .....so your milage may vary with these

My favourite camera. Just rebuilt the set-up I had 35 years ago. Have the 139 with 28mm f2.8 Distagon, 50mm f1.7 Planar and 85mm f2.8 Sonnar. Really compact set and inspires me to go out and enjoy photography.

Interesting - I had wondered about the hype on that Tokina. I actually opted for the 24-70 F4 IS. I use the L EF lenses for film, and IS makes a massive difference. The speed booster you're using actually works on the crop sensor Canon bodies too, which adds a whole new dimension to using EF glass on RF crop bodies.

the F4 24-105 is a pretty handy lens as well and on that speed booster it gives you that extra stop, plus the IS . The C70 this is shot on is a super 35 camera so cropped and it makes the FOV full frame , I end up using the c70+speed booster setup a lot more that then R5C as the c70 has in built ND ..thanks for you comment

Still have a Super 2000 and use it regularly. For exposure I use a REFLX LAB meter mounted on the hot shoe. A mixture of 'Old World' and 'New World' which works well.
