The only thing that wasn't mentioned and looks like hasn't been done is some work on the carb. From the way the engine is sounding and acting I'd say pull the carb, get a rebuild kit for it and give it a really good cleaning. If that doesn't do the trick, then go for an engine swap.
Love the old '72 Winnebago project. I had the Tonka Toy version when I was kid back when this thing was still running new. 😁 Looking forward to this series, you never disappoint. Have a great weekend. 👍
@@LifeofLind I love the style too. If I ever bought an RV it would have to be one of these classic beauties instead of the Transformers everyone rolls around in now.
Keep bringing us the amazing RV content, and there will be no reason for us to tell your wife about any of it. If she's like the rest of our wives... She probably already knows!
Fair play I thought the Barth was a challenge, but this Winnie is really rough haha. I'm looking forward to seeing its repair and refurbishment. On a plus note I was born in 1972 so everything from that year is clearly the best 👌
A buddy of mine gave me a '72 Brave in about the same condition as yours last year. Spent the summer gutting and remodeling it for the same buddy to come back and live in it for the winter here in Colorado. Had an awesome time and I'm sure you'll have a blast redoing this one.
There might be some more batteries under the floor by the passenger side long door. Went from memphis tn to Bangor Maine 1974 one summer and from Memphis tn to California the next summer 1975. It was brown instead of blue. Good luck with it.
This is definitely a restoration project - what an amazing piece of history- boxy shape, avacado interior, lots of wood. A lot of work ahead - but this will be AMAZING content over quite a few series!
Wow that’s really a rare bird, I’ve seen the chassis option but never the chassis with the control arms. Every brave I’ve seen has been dodge drop axle leaf springs, awesome find more then worth a Resto
Imagine how good she looked when new 😎 So retro, and so cool. Please keep us updated on this old girl. Your shop is awesome 🤩 Looking forward to lots more content from your channel.
it is on the ruff side but i have no doubt that the Winnie will be on the road fairly soon...enjoyed the video and looking forward to seeing how things go
Well at 1st glance, it's no Barth, but I'm such a fan of these older Winnebagos. Can't wait to see what you do. And the nice thing is, you can still get replacement parts for it from Winnebago.
Run some transmission good through the car when you’re trying to crank it it might have a stuck valve and carbon does not like transmission fluid. It’ll clean up quick. My dad showed it to me back in the day. It works. Trust me.
Love the older motorhomes (and love your channel). We had a '77 Dodge Sportsman Coachman growing up. It had a 440 under the hood...good luck with this one!
I bought a '72 d20 model, dodge chassis with a 318 engine, about 5yrs ago. I have wanted one since I was a kid. I'm looking forward to see the work involved in restoring yours.
Looks like a fun project. The engine issue sounds a lot like the 440 in our Challenger project. sat for 20 years.. new carb was the solution and she kicked right off, only to find a stuck oil pump.
I had no idea they even made these on a chevy chassis. Front independent suspension! I have a 1973 D18 that I've been building a suspension for to lower it to the ground and lift it back to stock height. It had a strait axle front .no way to do it with that. I made my own front a arm suspension. Really cool! Subscribed!
I'm sure you'll get this one sorte.its interesting content , can you do a video on that engine , it will be interesting to find out whats wrong with it..cant wait for the next part .good luck.
Don’t know what it is about RVs but we love them. Maybe it’s the fact that if you don’t like your surrounding you can just go find new surrounding a and people!
Hey man. You should film some walk throughs of the other RV and trailers in that yard. The little truck camper right behind your brave and the other brave. That would be good content.
Wondering if it pitched a timing chain? Great job loading that rig on the trailer, looks a little sketchy but it'll work! A 540 inch big block Chevy w/supercharger would motivate that RV just fine, seen it done before on a 38' class A RV, no problems with pulling grades on a highway! It also used an Allison trans to contain the torque.......!! Thanks for another cool video!
I was thinking timing chain also. Lots of small block Chevy’s had timing cam gears with nylon teeth. They’d wear, chip a few teeth, and skip time. Could be the cause of the backfire through the carb and probably loss of compression also with timing being off.
This showed up on my Google, had to come over to UA-cam to watch. Definitely subscribed! I need to find out where this place is. There's a couple of campers I need to look at🤔
It is on a beefed up chevy 3/4 commercial van chassis . Gm gave out that same chassis out to different manufacturers , our town here had a transit bus fleet made by winnebago ! They ran them until the late 80's
You mean to tell me they still haven’t come out and inspected your shop yet!? I sure hope you get that Winnebago going good and a new paint job. You get that are you gonna have a nice vintage RV on your hands. Good luck
Nice vintage build you’ve got there. I’m curious for the engine swap you’re going to do. And aso bringing it back to the old glory of a useful RV. I’ll follow that proces.
Where is this RV graveyard? I’d love to get one of them that I saw in the background of this video. I’m retired and have the building skills necessary to restore one, as long as my wife doesn’t see the bills for it.
I think you should probably record your wife’s reaction when she see’s that for the first time 🤣🤣🤣! First early 70’s Winnebago I’ve seen seen with Chevy dash and small block. Usually all Mopar!!!
Love your channel and look forward to each video. This appears to be beyond a "train wreck", so I'm very interested to see what you have in mind. Careful with the camera movement on the tours inside though... had to reach for my Dramamine as it messed with my head.
i agree with possible timing chain , i think this was built on a chevy p30 chassis similar to the grumman , i remember hearing about some being built with chevy powertrains but cant seem to find any info as to what year they did that, ours was a 73 chief with a 440.
LOVE the design / look of this Winnie! Hope you did not pay a lot for it since it seems like complete gut & redo of the interior and engine swap. The front end is just calling for some Bullhorns, right?? Name it the Winnie BS, lol. Anyhoo, can't wait to see what you do with it. Always love your interesting finds and builds. Best of Luck :)
Might not be a great place to ask but I have one of these that has been sitting for a while and I'm not sure where the battery goes on mine, it doesn't have a side panel like yours does and was wondering if you knew where else the battery's go on these things
I've always wanted a winni. That's for sure the original engine. It has a chevy steering wheel. They're usually a dudge. That looks like a small block though which is Weird.
I'm excited for this! Will there be any trim level videos? I also wonder on the availability of parts for this thing? Anywho, can't wait for the next one!
If I were you I would get under the front of RV, and grab the crankshaft pulley, rock it back and forth until you feel something gab. Just enough turning power to move the engine, but checking to see how much play is in the timing chain. Back in those days the cam gear had nylon that wears out and starts breaking off the gear.
I bought one just like yours. I'm going to have my son make it into a tiny home out off grid south of Snowflake Az. About same issues. My son is going to strip it all out including front seats to make w as y for a lounging couch. My seller wanted $1,000 for it as she had sentimental feelings for it. I'm a senior lady, 67 and will buy all new to make it comfortable and for easy living. On my sons land in the rolling hills. Need ideas on how to make it snake, rat, mouse and bug proof!
@@LifeofLind yes...my son texted me and said the little burgers chewed into my sons new gallon of milk and the milk got in his phone. When I lived out there in his fifth wheel...I'd be sleeping and had them run across my face! Sure are cute mountain rats! Kept me awake while they played and scavenged about. Would putting tin sheets around my place...a skirt, help keep them out?

these old ones are easy, just start at the basics!

18:00 mark the timing chain jumped or it has a valve stuck
My family had a Winnebago Indian as a kid in the 70's 413 Dodge think we had it for about 10 years
Pull the valve covers and see what’s up with the valvetrain. Valve could be stuck open. The compression gauge you found kind of gives it away.
