Well since your going into this full bore, I would gut it and repair the structure and new roof. Looking forward to this build. Some fuel tanks in the 70’s were galvanized. I would definitely restomod it. Have you see the video of the guys that built the turbo LS Winnebago? Turned out amazing!
I'm more of a rv guy but I'm still excited to see how this winnebago turns out. That interior is a mess and the roof needs work but you can obviously see the potential.
I had an 1972 Indian just like it. Sold it in 1985 after 72k miles . Enjoyed the heck out of it. You could even watch the highway go by sitting on the crapper! (Wall bowed out a little) it had a 413.
Crazy fun dewd! Can't wait to see how this Turbobago turns out! I on the other hand am a vintage trailer enthusiast and would return this baby back to it's original glory, but it's cool to see the other side too.
You stole my heart with pickle Rick Im a fan. I've liked your channel because I am fascinated with big vehicles AKA motorhomes if you don't like your neighbors drive away. A 800 horsepower mid-engine motor coach when you finish it please show Jay Leno's garage so you can take it on his channel he would love it. I wish it was mine I'm paralyzed in a wheelchair on wheels so why not have a home on wheels too 😉 but great job great video cannot wait until it's finished.
Your mid engine project reminds me of my ‘66 Crown Intercity bus with a Cummins 743 that lays 90 degrees on its side in the middle of the bus. You would have driven by it (somewhat) when you picked up the Barth. Thanks for the entertainment!
Bearing in mind your comment about RV refrigerators I’d suggest insuring it and then park it well away from the shop and test the refrigerator for a few hours, just to make sure it’s safe!
A 540" big block Chevy engine would really motivate that Winnie, saw something similar years ago where a guy stuck a big inch engine in a class "A" RV and slapped a 8-71 blower with 2 Dominator Holleys on it, built the engine to handle the power w/square port heads & 2" comp headers dumping into 4" exhaust with big truck mufflers on it, he said if he was gonna burn a ton of gas driving it, it better make some power doing it. He also said it was rated at 1200 HP, thus his reasoning for using an Allison trans in it. Quite impressive, would accelerate up a 6% grade faster than most cars. Thanks for the cool video, looking forward to this project!
The drivetrain should handle the horsepower 500 it would I don't know about 800 sounds like fun I wanna see that bus you're redoing I like going fast and I love RVs now you're back in action glad to see you coming alive again with some good videos
That thing is gonna be a beast! I can't believe that generator started. The one in my 98 southwind storm wouldn't even run as good as that. Cool channel.👍
People do not maintain their generators. I have a 95 Bounder with an Onan 7000 and it runs reasonably well. A couple months after buying it the tail pipe fell off. So, took it to the local generator specialist. They determined that it was likely that the oil hadn’t been changed since the late 90s, based upon the model numbers and markings on the oil and air filter. They replaced the tailpipe, did a valve adjustment, general tune up, changed the filters and fluids, and it was off to the races. I bet with enough money, the generator in your Southwind could be running again, too. Probably cost less to repair than replace.
@@jeromep oh for sure. It was in the same general description you supplied minus the missing tailpipe. Got it tuned and replaced the filters and fluids. Runs like a champ now! Way better than buying a new one. 👍
I had a 1972 gmc open road 25 foot with a 740 hp big block 502 ci with a super charger( came with a 454 ) and a turbo 400 trans , it would go up through the siskyou mountains pulling a 20000 lb race car trailer at 75 mph + and even breaking a sweat and still have about 6-8 mpg doing it and 10-13 mpg on the hwy at cruise speed was a grate set up. More horse power gives better mileage when it comes to a heavy air plow rv.
Get rid of that firestarter fridge.... A close to directfit fridge, $300 ish at home Depot. Easy install, screw it to the floor and ratchet strap the top to the floor.. Another plus...🤔 This fridge, uses hardly any electricity!!🤗 We like it so much, we installed another one, right next to it, for beer and wine👍👌 Velcro doors shut, when traveling.. Don't even have to take the doors off, when bringing them in the motorhome... Done,
Love seeing these classic old motorhomes getting saved im cummins swaping a 1972 starcraft starcruiser motorhome and doing a 4x4 conversion on it. By the way you can use the galvanized tanks for fuel no problem I come across them in boats all the time working as a marine mechanic
Also just a heads up you can put a turbo charger system on an rv but put it way down line on your exhaust system and plumb it back up to the intake it has time to really cool the intake air as well and keeps the temps way down in the engine bay area. Just build a tin heat shielding around the turbo area under the rv. Its golden works grate I've done a few for fellas.
The shop is coming along just fine and will be perfect when you get the shelves and other necessities in place. I don't know about a galvanized fuel tank, sounds like an accident waiting to happen. I would replace with a regular fuel tank. You could hook a snorkel or trunk, don't know the exact name of it, up to your exhaust so you don't have to open the doors in the wintertime to run the engine. It's similar to what we call an elephant trunk we use for onboard shipboard firefighting to run portable diesel pumps to de-water flooded spaces by hooking the pump's exhaust to the elephant trunks and running out to an outside opening. I've seen something similar that car manufactures use when testing vehicles indoors so they don't have this problem also. I never thought of a fast Winnebago before, but I like the way you think and look forward to seeing this project continue. 🚌💨👍✨🔥💥
getting closer on the shop for sure, hopefully next video it will be about finished! I'm with you on the fuel tank, maybe i should just get a new one. I have seen those rubber tubes in shops before, i bet they are expensive. i'll just crack the door haha Thanks for watching!
And you better make sure the front steering stuff is up to par too , you get the death wobble going on at speed that could be a sad day for sure. Winibegos are fatuous for the death wobble that have a lot of miles or use on the draglink and tie rods .
Alright Dustin this is the second video in a row that you've jipped us on the life of Lind music intro. Don't make us get a petition going lol. Great video other than that. Hope the rest of the shop move goes well.
I love these vintage winnebagos! I saved on up in the foothills in California. It’s a brave unit as well but the Winnebago F17! So it has the ford 300ci straight 6. Smaller than the Chevy chassis and the dodge chassis of the Winnebago braves.
I have a 69 winni, 318 2 barrel. Lay out is like yours. I put a rubber roof and built an new internal skeleton. New high-tech insulation, reflective rubber. More space panoramic views.
Drag and drive race week, get ahold of Derek at Vice Grip Garage for contacts. The Reeves at Flying Sparks Garage might be interested in the Green stovetop
It all depends what you want to achieve. If you expect to keep the RV as a "daily" then adding BHP would be fun. If, however, you plan to sell the result I would point out that you may get the best return for your efforts by selling right now. It runs, the genny works and maybe the air con too which makes it ideal for someone who would tackle the roof but not the oily bits.
yeah, please do rebuild it. Told a friend who ownes a 1976 Volkswagen LT 28 Winnebago (the only one in the world) about you. We are from the Netherlands
Galvanized gas tanks are common however if they have been left empty for long. Galvanization may have turned into a fine white powder which will gum up your entire fuel system I would not trust them in an old unit that has sat around a long time
super looking forward to seeing that big engine being tuned up and put into the middle of the van such a huge job but if its all filmed nicely it will be so worth it also to seeing the whole van get stripped clean and barebones, lightweight :p
Check the galvanized tank out before you try to use it for fuel, usually the galvanized water tank will be rusty inside which is a really bad idea for a gas tank.
There's a guy in Las Vegas who has one with a Dodge 318 or 360, don't remember, but he turbocharged it using a stock turbocharger off a Duramax. It's pretty quick.
Those twins would work good on my 79 regal 355/W Glide n 3.90 9 inch 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣I know you'll beglad when winter gets over Dustin....that wind looks wicked coming across those plains!!!!!😒😒😒😒😒😒😒😒
I think you'll need more power than you think to get to 120 mph. I did look at some photos of record setting RVs and they had substantially lower frontal area and one claimed a speed of 140 mph. You might get closer with one of those rear wind resistance kits used by semi trailers. There are some guys in Wisconsin that have put 1000 hp into a Winnebago but I don't know what their top speed is.
Well since your going into this full bore, I would gut it and repair the structure and new roof.

haha facts!
The Ring Brothers made a 1000hp Winnebago a while back. Good Luck with the build.
I'm more of a rv guy but I'm still excited to see how this winnebago turns out. That interior is a mess and the roof needs work but you can obviously see the potential.
it has lots of potential! and i will be doing a big diesel bus/RV soon
You need to install a exhust fan connected to long hose to put on the end of the exhust pipe so that you can run things longer.
I had an 1972 Indian just like it. Sold it in 1985 after 72k miles . Enjoyed the heck out of it. You could even watch the highway go by sitting on the crapper! (Wall bowed out a little) it had a 413.

before the era of plastic gas cans there were the metal galvanized cans so all should be good to use as a gas tank great video.
awesome thanks for the tip!
You are absolutely insane 800 horse power in a rv can't wait for your next episode as u love the idea and love your content
Go for it. This will be great.
that's what I'm thinking!

it just should be done! for Science!
Now see, "Worlds fastest Winnebago" video title, is a video that gets my attention !
Most gensets pull their fuel from above the 1/4 full level. This is to prevent the genset from using all the fuel and leaving you stranded.
With the power of that new motor you should call it either the Winnebango or Winnegobang 😄
How about the Winebago-go-go!
Check the galvanized tank out before you try to use it for fuel, usually the galvanized water tank will be rusty inside which is a really bad idea for a gas tank.
Didn’t someone already do this a few years ago? I remember someone doing burnouts and slapping an ls with a fat turbo in it

I don't think so for fuel tanks. You will probably get a lot of rust..probably just recycle them and get plastic water tanks.
Galvanized should be fine for gasoline but not diesel as it will erode the zinc.
that is kind of what I was thinking. maybe I will use them if they don't have any rust
