Freddie Mercury the lead singer was a huge fan of Aretha Franklin, he loved her early gospel style singing and he wrote this song as a tribute to her. Freddie never took singing lessons, but he could sing in every genre from hard rock to jazz and to opera effortless. He was a passionate guy full of emotions and he could deliver them to the audience like no one else. There were 3 great singer's in the band Queen (the exception was the bass player), so they never used background singers, but they were able to sound as a choir. Pls, check out the official video version for listening to the famous Queen harmonies or you can choose their most famous song the Bohemian Rhapsody with the similar choir effects.
My favorite Queen song written by the legendary Freddie Mercury!! Btw, his favorite song, too! All four members of Queen are brilliant musicians & songwriters!! All in the Songwriters Hall of Fame & Rock n Roll Hall of Fame based on their own merits! This is a rabbit 🐇 hole 🕳 worth diving into!!
No back up singers. Just the band called Queen with 4 members: Freddie Mercury lead singer, astrophysicist Brian May on guitar, John Deacon on bass and Roger Taylor on drums. Legendary band.
there‘s another great live performance from the seventies. it‘s the song „white queen (a night at the odeon 1975)“. it‘s similar to this in live skills but slightly more melancholic. simply phenomenal. the live aid concert i‘d recommend somewhen afterwards because if you like to see skills this is the way to go.
Believe it young lady. I still get chills hearing this, or any other live version of Queen, after decades of first listening to them. I can personally attest to the power of Freddie and the band as I saw them in September 1980, a little over a year before this video, and July of 1982 in Madison Square Garden.
Each Member of Queen has more Talent than the modern day Singer, Freddie was amazing, being able to belt out robust notes, while playing the Piano, masterful. But I wanna say that Roger has it all, because what he does is very difficult, yes Singing and Playing Drums at the same time is difficult, because your brain is already wrapped around playing so many different beats, using both arms and both legs and figuring out what beat you're gonna play next and then to sing and add Vibrato and even do vocal runs on top of that, is just difficult, normally you either mess up on the Drums or Sing Plain without too much Vibrato or no vocal runs, in other words sing crappy, but Roger showed no decline in his Drumming or Vocals.
I used to have this video tape of them live in Toronto in 1990 I think it was. I see many reactions of different Queen songs from it I'd always be amazed at the amount of beers he would have on his piano.
He didn't usually drink it though. Freddie had a special mixture of honey and lemon water to keep is vocal cords moist. This is what I read in a biography. His voice never failed him and he smoked.
Queens live shows trademark were the beers on the piano . None of them drank beer during their performance . You will see Freddie take drinks out of the cups you cannot see through . They were warm water and honey for his vocals .
you can never go wrong with Freddie and Queen, they are a genre on their own, they have done almost every type of song, its a BAND with Freddie as lead, but they ALL wrote and performed at least part of the songs themselves, it wasnt Freddie and his back singers, it was Queen with Freddie as Lead vocalist
Hello Blessing, Once again a very nice reaction by you!!! Queen is the name of the entire band and Freddie Mercury was the lead singer and you can hear some gospel music influence in this song!!!
Up to1978 his voice was at his best. After those hay days he had to do some adjustments to keep doing his thing. I met him in the late seventies in a sort of greet and meet. Very nice and a bit shy fellow. Quite in contrast with his alter ego on stage:-) Thank you for the reaction.
Freddy Mercury is one of the greatest singer of all-time. This song gives me chills every time I hear it. If you want to see him and the band in all their glory, watch their set from Live Aid.
Queen is the name of the group made up of four extremely talented individuals who all sang, played and wrote the songs they're not backup singers far from it, Freddie was the lead singer not by any means the leader of the group that's his own words, Roger Taylor, Dr Brian May ( Astrophysicist) who built his own Red Special in 1963 or began building back then with his dad from items found around their home, John Deacon who built the Amp which would give himself and Brian the sounds they wanted, each played the different instruments, so please it's not Queen singing that's Freddie the lead singer of the group
You are so right, there was no "leader" in Queen. Each member was equal and all band decisions like which songs they would record, what songs would be on their album, what song would be their next single, and where and when they would tour were decided democratically. The four of them were close like brothers and, like brothers, they squabbled all the time but they loved and respected each other.

I can always identify with this song..been single for 12 years and still looking ( And I'm NOT that picky!!) .A true masterful performance by Queen indeed. I do notice today's drummers don't sing like they did in the 60's 70's, and 80's and miss seeing that.
All men, and Queen is the name of the band! Freddie Mercury is the lead singer, Brian May on lead guitar, John Deacon on bass and Roger Taylor on drums.
You are going into the queen rabbit hole, you need to do the live aid concert...by queen. Considered one of the greatest live performance. 20 minutes, but worth it.

So a few things. No, Freddie didn't have a choir background, in fact he never had singing lessons. He had some piano lessons as a child. He is a pure talent and that is very rare. He is Parsi-Indian and he grew up in Zanzibar until he was about 8 years old then he was sent to boarding school in India. He moved to England as a teenager with his family. He was working as a baggage handler at an airport when he talked Queen (then Smile) to let him join as their lead singer. They brought on bass player John Deacon and the rest is history. It's said that Freddie's voice was so powerful that it could be heard even in the back of stadiums just as clear as the front. You should see "Love of My Life" in Rock n Rio 1985. The entire crowd sing his song to him and it's quite beautiful. Also, Live Aid in 1985. You will see his mastery of controls thousands and thousands of people in the crowds. They are riveted to him. He makes them sing scales in the riffs. It's unbelievable the notes he gets them to hit. Just amazing. He was a gift to the world, that is for sure.
He came to Britain in 64 when he was 17, he may have identified as Parsi at the time no one has explained. people have said he didn't follow the zoriastrian faith as an adult so he may not have identified as Parsi. He didn't identify as Indian his parents did. both Peter Straker and Peter Freestone have said Freddie got upset when they told him he was Indian. He wasn't born in India and he was racially Persian but Parsi ethnicity so obviously their culture was influenced by India, language and so on Freddie may have identified as Parsi but as he didn't follow the religion as an adult he may have stopped doing that. Smile 1968 - 1970. Tim Staffel met Freddie at college in 68 and then introduced him to Brian and Roger who Freddie later moved in with before Mary. he and Roger also ran a stall in kensington but it didn't do well so Freddie got a regular job in a shoe shop and fitted Bowie with a pair of boots! Tim started smile with Brian they had a band together previously. then Roger joined as their drummer. Freddie went to watch them and critiqued them. Freddie was performing in liverpool with Ibex and smile were at a different venue but went to see him and Freddie got them to do an encore with them. when Tim left smile according to Roger they were giving up but Freddie encouraged them to start again with him and they agreed to the suggest of Queen as a name. the only time they performed as smile was a small charity gig in toronto organised by Rogers mother who advertised it as smile
@@bluebell3720 In a manner of speaking, yes. However “backup singer” don’t play instruments (except fore the occasional tambourine). I was merely trying to make the point that Brian, Roger, and sometimes John are significantly more than backup singers.
As a mega obsessed Queen fan since 1991, it doesn't matter how many times I've listened to this over the years... Hundreds most likely... His vocals at 7:48 get me every time. Like you, the sudden changes in emotion that you feel in these seven minutes is what Freddie was the master of, especially when his voice was in this condition. I think it was Brian who said that Freddie would perfect every line and lyric in the studio until he expressed it to make the maximum impact. It's funny you mentioned that you thought it was female backing singers, it's something I've never really thought of, but can see (well hear) why you'd think that. Those backing vocals and the notes aren't what you'd expect of male vocalists, Roger especially. The emotion Brian brings out in the guitar is exactly what Freddie does with his vocals. It actually sounds like it's singing too. Lovely reaction video.
Thank you for giving credit to the other band members especially The drummer Roger Taylor, who’s vocals are Great. And of course Brian May, guitar and John Deacon, bass. It takes all of them together, that’s why the band is called “Queen” so many people just comment on Freddie Mercury.
I love watching the reactions of young people when they hear this stuff for the first time. 😊 You must check out Queen at LiveAid, Wembly Stadium, 1985 for the greatest 20 minutes of live music ever recorded. Freddie's voice was below par on that occasion but within 10 minutes he had 80k people in the palm of his hand.
Blessing, I hate that I missed this live. Still, I loved your comments and insights, very nicely done ❣️ If this tapped your emotions, try Queen live at Rock In Rio, Freddie Mercury and Brian May performing "Love of my Life". Just, be prepared for tears 🌹 Greetings from New York 😇🥰😁
@@MrsPenPal Enjoyed your reaction very much, Blessing! You obviously have a strong musical background! But please listen to Daniel with his suggestion about "Love Of My Life" in Rio. It will literally take your breath away!!
I grew up listening to my dad cooking breakfast to Queen, Janis Joplin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and other greats. Janis Joplin - piece of my heart would be an awesome reaction.
Thank you, that was great reaction! Could you react to Queen 'You take my breath away' live at Hyde Park 1976 and 'in the Lap of the Gods (revisited)' live at Hammersmith. That are my favorite young Queen perfomances. If you would like to check out more of Roger's (drummer) vocals do check Queen 'I am in love with my car' and 'In the Lap of the Gods' live at Rainbow:)

He wasn't born in India and he was racially Persian but Parsi ethnicity so obviously their culture was influenced by India, language and so on
Freddie may have identified as Parsi but as he didn't follow the religion as an adult he may have stopped doing that.
Loved All Queen's Music I Remember Them When They Started Out. Great Review.
As others have said, Queen is the entire band (they're not "back ip singers"
they were backing singers in the song! on studio version Freddie was lead and backing vocals
@@bluebell3720 In a manner of speaking, yes. However “backup singer” don’t play instruments (except fore the occasional tambourine). I was merely trying to make the point that Brian, Roger, and sometimes John are significantly more than backup singers.
Luv queen and Mrs P...
Thank you for your comment! I enjoyed reading it!
Thank you for giving credit to the other band members especially The drummer Roger Taylor, who’s vocals are Great. And of course Brian May, guitar and John Deacon, bass. It takes all of them together, that’s why the band is called “Queen” so many people just comment on Freddie Mercury.
Just subbed Sunday July 3 in Northern California
That my dear is how you do it... Noone then, now or ever will compare..
Freddie Mercury did solos, too. “In My Defense”…It’s amazing.
Saw Freddie twice, was very special. He was our Liberace.
I love watching the reactions of young people when they hear this stuff for the first time. 😊
You must check out Queen at LiveAid, Wembly Stadium, 1985 for the greatest 20 minutes of live music ever recorded.
Freddie's voice was below par on that occasion but within 10 minutes he had 80k people in the palm of his hand.
i love you..... your facial expressions... your choice of song... just you!!!
My dear 😂 this was so wild!
Queen 🙌
Blessing, I hate that I missed this live. Still, I loved your comments and insights, very nicely done ❣️
If this tapped your emotions, try Queen live at Rock In Rio, Freddie Mercury and Brian May performing "Love of my Life". Just, be prepared for tears 🌹 Greetings from New York 😇🥰😁

Four blokes Mrs Penpal!
I grew up listening to my dad cooking breakfast to Queen, Janis Joplin, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden and other greats. Janis Joplin - piece of my heart would be an awesome reaction.
everyone in Queen could sing. especially Roger and Brian.
You want another surprise? Check out Freddie and Montserrat Cabelle singing Barcelona... LOUDLY it will blow your mind!
That was the most Indepth Fun Reaction to this song, Similar to LRF Family,,both on the same Page ...Your background in music...Loads of Respect 🙏 💖
You could react to Queen's Seaside Rendezvous, a song that hardly anyone has reacted to, but that's another story. There is no official video, nor did they sing it at any concert, there are only spell videos. Greetings from Guatemala City in Central America.
