Freddie wrote this piece for the two of them and afterwards he and Montserrat became great friends until his death. Imagine the works that could of been made if he had lived longer. Truly two awesome singers we were privileged to have seen in our lifetime. Brava.
there‘s an interview with both of them as well as an interview with montserrat alone after freddie’s death where she‘s crying about the loss of him talking also about anecdotes.
Freddie could always sing this way. He could sing any way he wanted. And he wrote this song, this whole album, for and to sing with Montserrat at her request. He adored her for years before they met, and she adored him, they were meant to meet and collaborate before his death. It was written in the stars.
I loved watching your facial expressions during this performance! I could tell you were in music heaven. I can just imagine Freddie and Montserrat performing together in the afterlife.
My grandfather played the violin for the philharmonic orchestra, I was a ten year old deep into rock and metal and obsessed with Queen. This was our common ground.
Two musical anomalies bringing two unlikely genre's together for the first time and the result is absolutely breathtaking. This was a dream come true for Freddie, he adored her and he wasn't afraid to take a chance to step outside his comfort zone and stepped into her world. How can I go on is my favorite of their duets the emotion, the deep friendship between them is palpable. Music you didn't know you needed but will never forget ❤
On 8 October 1988. La Nit festival in Barcelona was staged on the occasion of the arrival of the Olympic flag from Seoul for the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992. This performance was playback, because of the perfection - as you mentioned -, and the lack of time for rehearsing, Montserrat's calendar was full for the next few years. Freddie was so much more than a rock singer. This was the first crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history. Freddie and Montserrat became good friends very quickly, they adored each other, and Montserrat was brave enough to take the risk of singing with a rock star, because she recognized The Musician in Freddie instantly. There are 2 more songs at La Nit 88. The Golden Boy (that is even more dramatic) and How Can I Go On, worth to check them out.
That's good info.👍 I really was a bit pissed that a lot of people, also other reactors, treated this concert as a LIVE one and that's absolutely not true. They are both great singers but, live this would not sound as full as it sounds. The music industry is ff up even the last Lady Gaga and Celine Dion at the olympics was NOT live. It's a bit sad.
"This was the *first* crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history." How about Nina Hagen? Of course, not taking away anything Freddie did and achieved...
"This was the *first* crossover between a rock singer and an opera diva in the history." How about Nina Hagen? Of course, not taking away anything Freddie did and achieved...
The first encounter between Freddy Mercury and the 'Catalan Nightingale' is legendary. On the way to a show in Barcelona, a spanish asked Freddy what he knew about Barcelona, he answered 'Montserrat Caballe'. Having heard that, she arranged a meeting.
Can you imagine having Freddie Mercury, none as one of the best singers with one of the best voices and range, a voice that can leave you speachless, and then you find a Opera singer who matches and possibly does the unimaginable out perform him without trying or wanting too.
You're hearing the synthetic sounds because they are all miming, even the orchestra. You hear it at the start, that is Freddie singing and the chorus singers miming. This is without a doubt the studio cut. ;)
This was the ceremony bringing the Olympic torch from Japan to Barcelona. Sadly Freddie died before the Olympics so two other singers sang this song opening the games
Oh Sweet Basement Cat, this one hits sooo true, I love every Queen song, but THIS. Can you believe that during repetitions, Montserrat Caballé actually asked Freddie to take a couple of steps back, because his voice was so powerful ? Freddie was a classicaly trained singer, he loved Opera, and went to several performances by Montserrat Caballé. The cantatrix was surprised to see groups on journalists mobbing that one man in the audience, Freddie had the taste to leave his outrageous outfits out when he came to her performances. So * SHE * invited * HIM * backstage after a performance. Freddie was in heaven. He had this song running around in his head for a long time already, but it missed something. That something was Montserrat Caballé. They became true, best friends, loved each other (in a platonic way, it must be said, Freddie had too much respect for her to try anything, and it was mutual), and they gave us this masterpiece that will transcend eternity, and a full album intended for just the two of them.
That was magnificent, and your reaction, with the beautiful facial expressions absolutely did the piece justice. Montserrat is superb, and Freddie, always brilliant, was prepared for the event. Cheers! Sheffield South Yorkshire.
Thanks, Emma - a total "mutual admiration" from these two.. they are totally in love.. lol -- please also see "How can I go on" and "the Golden Boy" -- they influenced each other quite a bit - I appreciate your reactions very much!
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm YOUR REACTION WAS BEAUTIFUL.... You were singing along with Montserrat and it was AMAZING to learn how OPERA works ,,, mmmmmmmmmmmmmm ... Your understanding of singing is WOW... I have a tear in my eye... REALLY
Emma your comments are so informative and you are i think a music teacher or singer in your own right but you seem to have a great voice, anyway, Forza Freddie.
When I met Montserrat for the first time, I immediately felt in LOVE with her! Really! Hard to explain, but I got Fred and knew what he ment and why he wanted to record/perform with her! Hard to describe, but ... She was much older than me, not my type of girl (if you know what I mean), BUT ... god damn! I loved her from second one!!! And I miss her ... and that's like 25 years ago ... *RIP_MY_LOVE Her live concert was just out of this world and is in the top 100 concerts I've attended to! I can't rank it correctly, because in 30+ years of music industries and 10,000+ live concerts, it's hard to do a list, because of age, time, experience, etc. ... but yeah: SHE!? o_O Top 10 for sure! ♥ Thanks for your reaction!
There are two other songs they performed together from the Barcelona album that was live and on video, THE GOLDEN BOY and HOW CAN I GO ON. The song GUIDE ME HOME from the album really leads into HOW CAN I GO ON. EXERCISES IN FREE LOVE is a must hear.
Btw the song and the presentation are related to the olympics that happened at Barcelona in 1992. Though sadly Freddie had passed by the time that the song was played on tv.
I remember the Barcelona Olympics mostly because of this song and the American Dream Team. Otherwise, in the Czech Republic, actor Jan Cina sang Montserrat Caballé's song Hijo De La Luna in the Your Face Has a Famous Voice competition, and it's an experience.
Watching your reaction to such a brilliant performance was joy to behold. I suggest you watch them singing "How Can I Go On". Truly heart-breaking. Then maybe "Golden Boy".
It's not live they are miming not singing, no microphones, Fred's voice all over the backing harmomies. For some reason they never performed this live.

I am so glad you reacted to my recommendation, as most people are unaware that Freddie did 2 solo albums. although Freddie never sang with Pavarotti, Pavarotti did sing "Too Much Love Will Kill You" with Queen.
spectacular is all I can say about this, while its fresh in your mind take a look at them do "How Can I Go On" which of course knowing Freddie's story will have a special meaning...have a good day!
You should see the documentary where both talk about the performance. I don't remember which one it is though. I do remember him being incredibly insecure about the performance, saying something like he had no clue how to match her, since she's "like a bloody volcano". 😄
You should watch a few of the interviews about their first meeting and the making of this song. Then listen to the lyrics again as their story is told in song. I ve watched quite o few of the reaction videos to this performamce and just anput everyone 's jzw drops when her first notes come out. I get chills everytime...i think its Freddies spirit
Now you must watch the performance of The Golden Boy at this La Not concert. It is a mix of opera, rock and gospel. The entire Barcelona album is amazing.
There is so much to admire about Barcelona. Firstly, it's essentially a platonic love song, not something you get very often in the music world. It's all about these two remarkable talented people who've fallen in love with each other & their respective talents as friends. Freddie managing to compete with Montserrat vocally is a testament to his vocal prowess. Montserrat giving so much of that unique pretty sounding "flutter" that she had in her head voice that made her voice so unique even in the realm of iconic opera divas. The chemistry between them both on stage, these two people adored each other. It's perfection in a song.
Emma, there's a really good (short) video you should watch about how Freddie and Caballe came to record together. It's only about 11 minutes long. If you want to watch it on your own. It's called "Freddie Mercury - the untold history - parte 8 (legendas pt)."

I love to think that Freddie And Montserrat Caballé are in heaven teaching the Angels how to REALLY SING
Montserrat and Freddie absolutely ADORED each other and when he passed away it really destroyed her emotionally
