    1. As others have pointed out, Freddie had some funky teeth. He had too many of them AND they were ginormous. There are photos of him as a child, and bless his heart, they were unsettlingly large. He was absolutely convinced that his big, extra teeth were what made it possible for him to have a four-octave range. It's entirely possible he couldn't make his mouth conform to the shapes you described for the closed vowel sounds without considerable trouble and without distorting his voice.
    2. The version you reacted to was done in concert. It's highly stylized compared to the official video and the album version.
    3. As for Freddie's movements . . . One of his good friends and business associates called Freddie a peacock because he liked to strut. Freddie called himself a Persian poppinjay because he LOVED to strut. He was an unabashed showoff, and he knew how to work the crowd (see how he turned his microphone into a phallic symbol).
    4. If you really want a treat, find a copy of Queen's 1986 concert at Wembley Stadium (the year after Live Aid). There's an improvisational section where Freddie shows the range of his voice rather nicely.
    5. Yes, I know this is too long. I'm in a mood.
    6. Yes, Roger had a fantastic singing voice. His falsetto was even higher than Freddie's. See "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the "Galileo" bits and bobs. That was Roger. He was a marvelous drummer who poured everything into his performances (see the end of that Wembley Stadium concert where he has to be helped off the stage).
    7. Freddie wasn't the best singer in the world. We can always find missed notes here and there. He was, however, the best front man ever to grace a stage.

I am one of the ones fortunate enough to have seen and heard Queen and Freddie Mercury live (Edinburgh in 80s) at the height of their popularity and can confirm that Freddie didn't just use the piano or his own body as his grounding, but he used the whole stage, his whole person. He brought everything to his performance and owned the stage/auditorium and communicated to each person. He was an absolute pleasure to watch and to listen to. Beautiful. There will never be another one like him. (the other members of Queen of course - great, I love their compositions! but Freddie as the frontman IMHO was everything) - joyful to watch...and thank you Linor for bringing that over in your observations too, you felt it.

Freddie was checked by several music colleges and they agreed he was a 4 octave singer and even a scientist listened and realized that he could use both sets of vocal chords where most people don’t even know there are two sets. He sings different live than on his albums because he said what would be the point to touring and not changing the sound sometimes. He sang and wrote the Opera Barcelona with Monsserrete Cabella Spains diva in 1988. He sang songs until about 2 to 3 months before he died. He also had 4 extra incisors that he wouldn’t get removed. I think all his awards and music speaks for itself. He has proven his self a legend. England named him as one of the top 100 people that did things to honor them. Thanks for your opinion.

Honestly this video is very insightful, I love how you broke down the vocal techniques and reacted in real time to the things freddy was doing... but you have to admit there is a subjective tone that Queen just nails with this song. Its more than just the vocals, its the whole package of the band that carries the performance through. Great reaction!

I disagree. I think Freddie was a fantastic singer. But I don’t see anything all that special. It’s also not my type Of music.
My favorite singers would be Russell Allen for sure, maybe Dio, I’m sure there’s others.

Linor Let your freak flag fly I love that when my vocal coach who was so disciplined critical and totally knowledgeable when she came to hear me sing she just enjoyed herself no criticisms are technical points to point out she saw what we did to the audience and she said that's all that mattered and you know what I totally agree with her if I may be so bold to say we did have the ability to sell just like the damn record and that's what blue people mine they said they could close their eyes and believe they were curing the record and that particular band Yes I was a pretty good impersonator on top of whatever else that's so were my guitar players my keyboard players my bass player my drummer when we did an original song and we had plenty we sounded a little different too extremely and totally different cuz of course we had our own identity but we thought if we were doing a cover tune we wanted to take you back to that first kiss that first dance that first moment of magic when we performed cover tune that was our goal and key to success why clubs and agencies wanted us
