I adore this song. Grohl shines here. I swear, the entire song is a series of drum fills strung together and watching him play this live is mesmerizing.
Nirvana and L7 are punk bands. "Grunge" was a label for Sub Pop to promote a roster of diverse bands under one new marketing slogan. It became a cultural phenomenon, but that was mainly a media creation and had more to do with a pop-culture reaction to the materialism of the 80s. It was more about fashion than the music itself. Nowadays "grunge" is just used to describe a certain era in music (early 90s) and a geolocation (Washington state). It was a scene, not a coherent genre of music. A lot of people don't understand that.. those bands come from very different places musically and have vastly different influences
Nirvana is probably my favorite band of all time. It's interesting how so many metal fans don't like Nirvana. I know most metal fans don't like punk but Nirvana really transcends that. They also have a lot of really heavy songs that I don't think they've heard. Try songs like "Negative Creep" "Scentless Apprentice" "Milk it" "Hairspray Queen" etc. PS Aneurysm is one of my favorite Nirvana songs.
I totally agree. Most say that Alice In Chains were the heaviest grunge bands. But Nirvana has a lot of tunes that AIC doesnt even come close to as far as heaviness goes
Nirvana is in my top 5 bands ever too. I’m a metal, punk and grunge listener. My top 5 have Ramones and Sabbath in them so defo not a one genre only fan. I see a lot of metal in nirvana but I agree, lots of metal fans don’t like or accept Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. Not sure why. He’s certainly more on the punk side. Aneurysm is my fav nirvana song. It’s just full of awesomeness.

One of the reasons I got into Nirvana was that mix of heavy rock with punk elements as I was into early heavy metal and got into punk in the early '80s. When I first listened to Nirvana I found them to be the perfect band for me at that time. Especially After a decade of new wave pop and really bad hair bands (including KISS in the '80s). But is was that mix of hard heavy rock, great melodies and punk elements and attitude that put them among my all time favorite bands. They do not have a bad song IMO and I love most every on of them.
Great analysis once again. I love when Cobain screams on the transitions, he chooses very well where to insert the scream, in “Drain You” for example, sometimes I find myself listening to songs of other artists and feeling like a Cobain scream would fit this transition perfectly

"Negative Creep" "Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" "On a Plain" "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" "Lounge Act" I can go on, give these songs a listen to start with. BTW, if you go into listening with a negative attitude you are not being fair. I will consider subscribing if I see a better attitude toward one of my favorite bands ( notice the title of the first song I listed-lol ). Thanks
It's an amazing record ! Disturbed opening and massive switch. Man I can hear the bass long minutes what Krist Novoselic made and Grohl was very dinamic in this song. I think too Kurt's voice was on the peak in this time. Thanks your video!
Aneurysm is like a movie that starts in the middle and then you get sent back to the beginning of the story, and it's a difference experience the second time around with foresight as to what is going on. That being said, it's a more "Nirvana" song than most non Nirvana enjoyers are gonna grasp in one listen... it's really deep into what it is they do best, so Nirvana lovers appreciate it on a level someone comparing this to say... Lithium, or Heart Shaped Box just isn't.
They wrote this album as a counter to the super polished Nevermind. It was their counter angst against being corporate rock stars. The whole album is deconstruct punk. I love a few grunge bands better but the more you know about them the more their music is palpable and great. Sure the flash of hair metal was great but some of the grunge guitar was too in its own way.
I was too young for nirvana in the 90s but I discovered them 2 years ago.. bleach is the greatest music I've ever heard in my life.. negative creep, Paper cuts, floyd the barber, school.. then this song in later albums.. ❤
Good on you for giving them reactions, even though you were never a fan of theirs. This is sooooo nostalgic for me. I know you said you were never a huge fan of the "grunge era", but this is my genre for me during my teens. Also loved some British new wave like, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Smiths and Joy Division who later became New Order. I also get the punk feels as well. Their first album Bleach has more punk feels too. There are a few albums and songs I remember where I was and what I was doing the first time I ever heard them. Nevermind album was one of them, also Radiohead OK Computer, and NIN Pretty Hate Machine. Radiohead would be amazing for you to react to, the song Paranoid Android, amazing progressive song. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Not a big Nirvana fan so I don’t know a lot about the chronology of their music. Someone correct me if I’m wrong. I think this was one of their very early songs...before they really hit their stride.
I was never interested in Nirvana but recently I decided to give them a try and now they're one of my favorite bands lol A lot of their songs sound WAY better live though, especially this one. I'd recommend their most known songs to get introduced to them: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Lithium, In Bloom and Heart Shaped Box, check out the studio versions for these.

This song seems to be really popular among die hard Nirvana fans but it never really clicked with me. Like you I think its a good solid song. Scentless Apprentice I think is a song by them that doesn't get enough love, great heavy song and one of my favorite riffs by Kurt.
I like some Nirvana, think my issue with this song was the repetitive lyrics. They went to long, too many times. Could have cut it down by two or three repeats and I think I would have enjoyed it more.
I agree about most of your comments, I give this a 6.3... Most of Nirvana's song, especially the early album, to me is mostly pop tunes played on punk sounds. I enjoy it in my youth as kind of 'catchy rock song'. Simple, easy to digest but also raw at the same time. This song is a bside, I believe from nevermind session. One thing I always disagree with media,, and Nirvana itself, is their comments on Nirvana vs Pearl Jam thing. As they are totally different band and also on different level. I can see even from early that pearl jam will evolve over time, while nirvana the room for growing may have been limited. And then Cobain choose to end his life...
I love Nirvana but I've never loved this track because I just don't find it catchy enough. There are elements of classic Nirvana grooves that I always dig, but many of their other tracks do everything they do well here much better. My $.02.

Nirvana was a good band but were capable of making some horrible songs too. I often think Kurt would still be around if they had been like the 3rd or 4th band to break out of that musical Seattle scene. I think he would have been more comfortable out of such a bright spotlight.
This song works best when you set the volume to insane.
