You are right. They wanted to play "rape me" but mtv wanted them to play "smells like teen spirit" and Nirvana refused and they agreed on Lithium. But they decided to scare the hell out of them in the back by playing "rape me" for a few seconds. Kurt honestly can just stand there and he exudes coolness and rock star status so he doesn't have to do much.😎 Krist definitely hit himself in the head with the bass and took some stitches. Nirvana and Guns n Roses had tension all night starting earlier that night back stage with Axl Rose and Kurt and Courtney. After this incident supposedly Duff Mckagan was trying to fight Krist Noveselic. Though the issue was mainly with Axl Rose.
Dave Grohl also mentioned that after the performance he saw Krist Novoselic just hanging backstage with Brian May from Queen. So much happened with this performance.
Dude!!! I told you!!! He was an amazing vocalist and wrote super great songs, were they simple and not as difficult as maybe Metallica or some other big bands? Yes... but listen to the song School , it's like 2 lines and just a few chords but that song is killer. Kurt has an amazing voice you just gotta find the right video to watch.
I think that´s one of the reasons Nirvana and the whole grunge thing got so popular, it was almost as heavy as the pure metal bands but much less technical and easier to get in to. It was another kind of heavy so to speak.
from a far, i've always found it spiriting how bands from an underground background or DYI scene support each other, and seeing Kurt wear a Daniel Johnston t-shirt in front of millions watching on tv was so cool of him.
I remember watching the 1992 MTV Music awards being in my early 20's. Was a great year because I got to see U2 at Dodger Stadium a few months later. They did a live performance via satellite from Detroit with Even Better Than the Real Thing for this show. I miss the old MTV and the shows like 120 minutes and Headbanger Ball. And who could forget Bevis and Butthead.
The axle incident was because they had a feud. Axle said they were crap, and Guns and Roses were the big deal at the time, then Nirvana became the new big boys.
The late 80s to early 90s at least 1991-1992 I argue is some of Kurt’s best times vocally before. They are definitely worth a time when you are search up some of Nirvana’s performances of that era.
The amp of Krist was turned up so much it stopped working in the end. He didnt want to pretend to play and wanted to do what he did many times before. Throwing his bass in the air and catching it. But he had some drinks before they had to go on stage and so his head was catching his bass and not his hands ;)
There’s a phenomenal Dave Grohl interview clip where he explains Krists failed bass toss, here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/QA7TTPepCo8/v-deo.html Another little tidbit pertaining to the Axl-Nirvana feud; when he exited the stage, Kurt passed by the piano that Elton John was going to play for Axl and GNR, and Kurt spit right on it (not knowing it was Eltons, thinking it belonged to Axl). The reason for this, and Dave shouting ‘Hi Axl’ was that before the show backstage Kurt and Courtney were eating food and jokingly yelled to Axl “hey, we’d like you to be the Godfather of our child!” And Axl, surrounded by a bunch of bodyguards, told Kurt to “shut his bitch up” and made a move toward him as if he wanted to fight. Krist and Duff then got into a little bit of a scuffle (bassist on bassist crime lmao), and then that all eventually led Dave calling him out at the end. What an era lol, great reaction/review as always
@@korkunctheterrible4302 just two guys backing up their bands, I guess. Duff had a bunch of security guards with him so it didn’t really escalate. But yeah, duff was def a cool dude, on the flight that Kurt took back to Seattle a few days before he killed himself he sat next to duff on the plane and they just shot the breeze for a few hours.
they had to hunt for kris, he was found dazed and with concussion later. they were seconds from getting cut off...love it. you need to watch smells like teen spirit on top of the pops in england...they all took the piss
I'd give this performance a perfect 10 considering how historic and iconic it was. The fact that the bass landed on Krist's face, and the band themselves were most likely messed up at the time, on a huge, live, award show just makes it fantastic. Plus Kurt giving the big f-u to Axel at the end just topped it off. Nirvana were the biggest band in the world at the time, clearly didn't give a f*ck about mtv and ended up pulling off one of the best f*ck you! performances ever. (But I get that you have your own personal rating system for yourself)
So many things to say about this performance... Altercation with Axel Rose, spitting on Elton John's piano keys thinking it was Axel's, the "R*pe Me" prank, Krist takes a bass in the head, Dave sais Hi! to Axel and, when they look for Krist to know if he was well, they find him bleeding but talking to Iggy Pop (I think) as if nothing was. Later Dave explained to MTV that they had pranked MTV with that fake "R*pe Me" intro, just in case MTV had missed it. What a night!
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 No never heard that tbh, and there's an interview of him talking about being with Kurt on a plane a few days before he died and he doesn't mention that. He says they actually had a pleasant conversation but... idk.
I always listened to this on a Walkman (portable cassette player for those young readers on here, I know you know what it is lol) and you can hear him clear in headphones. It's a headphones album for sure; for me at least.
If you want a nirvana track you may not have heard before I’d recommend Love Buzz, Big Cheese (both are off their first album Bleach), or Sliver (off of Insecticide an album that a lot of ppl don’t even know exists)
MTV demanded they play "Teen Spirit" and they no and settled on this. Nirvana actually wanted to play 2 new songs that would fit into the time they had, obviously "Rape Me" was one of them and as you said MTV freaked out. They almost cut the broadcast entirely. So Kurt got his stab in. The other song under 2 minutes would have had to be "Tourette's" I can't believe this wasn't in the 9's.
He couldn't say I'm so horney that's ok my will is good either? I thought maybe he changed the words on purpose, I bet MTV said he had to. Guns and roses asked Nirvana to go on tour with them I think, I know Duff from gnr was one of the last people to see Kurt, I'm thinking cuz Duff was from Seattle and Axl and the other members weren't? I'm sure there's an interview out there that explains it all. Great reaction dude, Nirvana will always be my favorite band ❤
You have no idea how much i have listened to this song, before i bought the cd me and my best friend always went in to a record store(damn how i miss record stores) and listened to this one. Good times.
You're not alone in missing record stores. Many hours of my youth were spent in Warehouse Music going up and down the aisles browsing all the tapes and CD's.
Krist said they had to follow what MTV said cause they knew where his sister went to school. But then they said seriously that MTV could go get revenge on other bands nirvana liked
Kurt had a completely different artistic vision for the official Lithium video, which ended up just being live shots because they didn't have time. It would have looked a lot like Tool's "Sober" video which Kurt viciously accused them of completely ripping off the Brothers Quay, a stop motion animation team.
They did want to play Rape me but MTV forced multiple bands this show to do their hit songs mtv wanted smells like teen spirit but they compromised on lithium

But when you do get around to Nemophila, I'd highly recommend this one. It will really drive your point home when it comes to stage presence. For the show, they had VERY minimal production. But they brought it to the stage. VERY high energy. They put on a great show, and it was ALL them. Practically nothing in terms of superficial production. It took me back to when I was their age. But alas, I'm getting old now. LOL I'll leave the link if it helps. In any case, looking forward to the next one. ua-cam.com/video/19VQ9tkWksQ/v-deo.html

Kurt had a hard time recording vocals on Nevermind cause the record executives made him tone it down cause they wanted it to be easier for the general population to sing along

This was the famous show of the "missed bass toss"
This was great i was surprised by kurt's vocals
Thank you ❤️❤️
Want to see them give a tv producer a big FU, search Nirvana British TV show lol
What started the feud is nirvana refusing to go on tour with guns and roses because guns and roses are guns and roses
