      or they dont care because they have already bought up and closed down all the competition, or are willing to buy up and close down any competition if it arises. facebooks monopolistic practices are well known.
      they are a bad company and no one with any sense should support them.

    Honestly I just want the Deckcard to be a stand-alone Index with a higher res screen. But It can also be used in the current 2.0 base station system with either inside out tracking or external when in wired/wireless PCVR mode. Preferably it would be able to play high quality PCVR games like HLA while in standalone mode but that might be too big of a wish.

    • @LyK0sa
      @LyK0sa 2 роки тому +6

      Integrated inside out tracking paired with the option of lighthouse tracking would be pretty huge. I wouldn't expect it to play AAA games like alyx in standalone mode, but I'd hope that they put some serious work into wireless connectivity. No one really wants to be physically tethered to their PC in an ideal world, so hopefully they put a lot of work into a wireless solution that manages to maximise visual fidelity and minimise latency.

      i get not wanting a facebook headset. but why on earth would you want a standalone headset? you know the steam deck only has a 720p screen, its not great etc. if you have a pc, shouldnt you want valve to continue to cater to its pc market? to stick with high end vr? i suppose each to his own though, at least its not facebook, plus steam/ valve has a pretty good linux type operating system that games quite well these days, so if anyone can do standalone well (apart from facebook) steam can.

    For the Deckard I mostly want wireless and continued support for base stations. I have full body and really love the accuracy/range of the stations, so even if for most this isn't the ideal setup, I'd be on board with continued support. That said, I'm sure even if the headset doesn't use them the controllers/trackers will continue if specified.
    Oh, and better color/light depth would be awesome. You are very right on the dimness of VR. Games can do a good job of making you forget about it, but it's always an "issue".

    • @AgentClank
      @AgentClank 2 роки тому +5

      I think that the price point is because they're taking a significant loss on it in order to grab the market. Fingers crossed, obviously, but I also feel that Valve has always targeted the more high-end sector and prefer to be innovators rather than directly compete with other products.
      The Pico Neo is basically just a Quest copy if you're looking in that direction, but they're owned by like the Facebook of China, so I don't know if you consider that an improvement.

    One thing I outright *expect* Valve's new headset to have is eye tracking, thus allowing games to use multi-resolution rendering--i.e. 4k wherever you are looking right down to 240p at the edges of your peripheral vision. That should *DRASTICALLY* increase graphics performance and/or efficiency without players even being able to tell.

  • @nbrown6648
    @nbrown6648 2 роки тому +8

    For me personally, at this stage of vr progress, I want ONLY increased fov and increased resolution. I will ONLY pay more (and considerably more - up to triple) if these two are significantly improved. And If it needs two XR2 processors to handle those extra pixels - well that should be doable with triple the budget.

    5:43 I have definitely noticed this. VR does feel pretty dim when you are in it, and I find myself noticing and missing the distinct lack of brightness while in VR. In particular though, I have noticed that this mostly just makes me tired if I am not doing something active in VR, because it is so dim that my brain seems to associate it with night and sleep, even in a scene designed to look like it is outdoors and bright

    • @chrisc1140

      To me that's interesting because I actually normally turn *down* the brightness in mine. Sudden bright lights were blinding.

    • @adicsbtw
      @adicsbtw 2 роки тому +1

      @@chrisc1140 Perhaps that could be due to a result of phantom sense. You see what looks like it *should* be a bright light based on the level of bloom, the lightsource, and your expectations, so your body reacts as if it is bright, even when it isn't

    • @chrisc1140
      @chrisc1140 2 роки тому +4

      @@adicsbtw Nah. Don't have any other phantom sense so that seems unlikely. Shit just be bright sometimes. Can also take the headset off (like going to the bathroom or something) and see very bright light coming out of it if it's pointed at something bright.
      Maybe just a difference between the pimax and other headsets? I don't remember the Odyssey WMR I had first being noticeably dim, but I didn't have to turn the brightness DOWN on it either.

    • @adicsbtw
      @adicsbtw 2 роки тому

      @@chrisc1140 From what I can tell it seems like pimax headsets are about standard in terms of brightness. Also, phantom sense varies wildly from person to person, and having one part of phantom sense in no way means you will have other any of the other parts. For me I don't notice an issue with things being too bright in VR most of the time, but I can focus on it and sorta convince myself that what I am looking at is bright, and then perceive it as being brighter than it really is. For me, activating that response is similar to how I can activate other phantom sense responses, which is why I suspect it could be a form of phantom sense that just isn't talked about much because of how subtle it is

    Improved knuckles controllers

    If Deckard releases I would definitely ditch the Quest tbh. I love the quest and all of the experiences that are available on the platform, it just seems like Valve- with enough time and resources- could come out of the gate with a few good heavy hitters and have a greater variety than what the quest can offer at the moment. But I guess it really just depends when it releases for me rather than if it releases.

    i found the meta headset prototype video on tested absolutely awesome, and hearing that the HDR headset uses a second monochrome display (from an LCD 3d printer) and high CRI COB LED backlights (e.g. yuji led), and you've done a watercooled headset before (which the COB LEDs might want too), do you think a DIY HDR headset is a project you might want to try?
    one colour display with backlight removed laminated on one monochrome display, a fresnel lens to culminate the LEDs, COB LEDs behind, and you're done! alot like a DIY projector as built many times by DIY Perks. you'd have 2 separate display drivers with 2 separate inputs, but clone the display and hey presto!
    many headsets use 'standard' sized displays so the optics should work for this new display arrangement. le zuck and Norm both said that HDR is probably the most impactful visual enhancement so i can only imagine that you'd love to try this as much as i do!
    as a proof of concept, 1080p and 2k displays with drivers are dirt cheap. incredibly interesting would be to then add 2 more high PPD mini displays in the centre like the areo (i think), with a total of 4 display inputs. i know they did a lot of magic to blend the transition between the displays, but this theoretically DIYable stack should get you 80% of the way there and could be AMAZING!
    maybe no longer wearable, but then again, maybe yes. with a watercooling and power source backpack, it could be about as usable as that chonky $100000 headset you tried.

    It would be amazing of the Valve Deckard if you could just sign into your Steam account and than install and play your VR games that you bought from your PC or phone. No need to be on the same internet connection or make a Facebook account. Just sign in and play, it would also be amazing for travelling because you can play your PCVR games without being connected to your PC at all. Kind of like the Quest 2's native game library but with Steam.

    • @theninjamaster67
      @theninjamaster67 2 роки тому +1

      That would be so hard to do merely due to the fact PCVR games are made for X86 so an ARM based device would need some sort of compatibility layer or native ports made for ARM not to mention mobile graphics tech kinda sucks unless it's prohibitively expensive for the majority of people so most of the games would have to be super nerfed to look as bad as they do on the Quest not to say it would be completely impossible but t would be exceptionally difficult without some secret sauce like their Linux compatibility layer but for ARM compatibility.

    The problem, in my opinion, with moving towards VR looking indistinguishable from reality is that most are focused on building games. I guess its more of a bump in the road. Now im not a game dev, but your telling me they can make Forza games look crazy real but yet the best VR MMO's and VR social hangouts that they can produce thus far is the liking of Minecraft. It just shows where the priorities are to be honest. People need something more than just gaming to want VR and not look like a fricken game.
    We keep getting closer and closer to mainstream adoption. One day at a time I guess.

    I'd still love if we could get a proper wireless solution for the index. Short of that though, I'd want the deckard to be wireless with an increased FOV, higher clarity, and to have it be a bit easier to get a proper fit so that it doesn't get blurry when you look down due to the headset moving slightly (makes playing into the radius very hard unless you go as tight as physically possible on your head).

    I… don't really need that much out of the Deckard (this would be my first headset). Wireless/standalone would rule, but as long as the controllers are more durable than the current Knuckles and the display specs get an appropriate bump to keep up with competition, Valve can take my money.

    For the Deckard, I want it to be a system open to modification
    I want an open SDK (though Steam as the main platform is natural), swappable tracking faceplates, ways to run custom code on an OS level on the device similar to the steam deck. And most standard features. We need a standalone platform that is open to developers and not hostile like the Quest platform.

    One of the big things holding back full immersion is haptic/force resistance in all areas, which would require a full exoskeleton. So you can climb a flight of stairs, hang from an overhead object, climb a wall, feel the strain of lifting a heavy object, push up against a wall and not be able to move through it. I would like to see some coverage of future exoskeletons for VR. I remember sometime back there was a company working on it… Axis VR? I can’t remember but I know there are research groups looking at this, and it will be great once this level of immersion is present.. I believe this is an absolute necessity to pass the VR Turing test. Not just a visual test.

    Honestly, Variofocal displays are the one thing that needs to happen. Field of view and brightness, for example, don't necessarily need to be overcome, but are nice to have. But current tech with a fixed focal range of 6ft/2m is really what is holding things back. The focus of our eyes is what allows us to perceive objects in three dimensions, which is arguably the most important aspect of VR entirely. It's also one of the bigger pain points of potential eye problems for many people.

    I'm surprised that no one is working on developing the technology behind the Avegant Glyph, where the image is projected directly onto the retina. Even at the original model's meager 1024×768 resolution, the image clarity is mind blowing. Of course there would be some technical hurdles to clear, but I truly believe that the idea of projecting the image directly onto the retina will eliminate other technical hurdles that are encountered with standard VR tech where we're basically wearing a phone screen on our face.

    i'm kinda modest with my VR wishes: basically just more excellent story-driven single-player action-adventure games, including VR-remakes of classics. As a gamer since the early-80's my recent runs through HL:Alyx & RE4-Q2 are pretty up there in all-time favourite games ever, and Thrill of the Fight too! The two things i love about VR-gaming is that you're inside the game, and that physically you're active playing it (standing, turning, crouching, swinging arms etc). The couch-potato aspect of traditional-gaming - planted in a seat or even bed for several hours - just seems like a guilty waste of time now.

    What I see rarely mentioned is IPD. I'm "generally oversized" and my IPD is around 72-73mm, but the Index only goes up to 70. That's close enough to not be a dealbreaker (and you can do some fiddling in the config, whatever that actually achieves), but it would be nice to get just a tiny bit more room for adjustment in the Deckard.
