RIP Echo VR
JESUS!
🙏
Echo VR dying is the worst thing that could happen. It could have formed a major Esport to popularize VR, and they threw it away before it could grow.
It pretty much was a major e-sport, with a few years it would have extended further beyond Vr and be much more widespread. This is coming from a former player In the VRML.
That much toxicity was not gonna work for that . Hopefully they make their point at least for VR . Chasing off gamers for 4 decades now since headsets came into gaming . Anonymity got a voice and people forgot treating people how you would like to be treated was a reality .
I feel horrible for the decent respectful players that just loved the game but that one was one of worst I saw for just running off most new players instantly .
This does suck bad .. it has been ruining multiplayer gaming for 4 decades . Even though I wish there was another way I kinda get why and not much choice if they want multiplayer to help VR mass adoption go faster .
Losing this game sucks horribly … but what about the THOUSANDS of others that were never even given a chance because most people just want to play a game and do not understand what happened so it is not only confusing it is offputting immediately .
Most gamers I know refuse to play multiplayer because of this issue . We could have a HUGE multiplayer resurgence if this gives people any clue as to how there actions have been effecting their own games it was worth the shock to the system .
Crossing fingers , would love to play multiplayer all the time , but most games like this
Was it's player base growing?

Rest In Piece, Echo VR. One of the most unique VR games ever made, and it was free!
I loved that game, o7 legendary game
o7
Game was great but biggest group of angry gamers I ever met
Not really that unique tbh but without a doubt it has left it’s mark on vr.
I hate that fucking lizard man rn
I only played Echo VR a little and it wasn’t for me, but it was still a game with so much potential. It was so popular and to execute in front of its fans was just dirty by Meta
I played a little of echo and thought the same. But them I discovered that it had combat. I would have liked to play it, but I wasn't about to buy a DLC to a game that was confirmed to be canceled. So my dreams of a Ender's Game style VR game will never be fulfilled.
@@vidal9747 that is awful, I completely forgot about the pvp too, so much potential wasted!
same
So true: I actually LOVED he idea of Echo combat, and played it mostly when I was on the Rift S back in the day. But once Echo Arena was available on Quest 1 then 2, I was hooked on Arena! Just wished they could have actually tried to make a REAL Enders Game! But Meta bought RAD and instead of growing the game, tried to implement the dreaded 'Season Pass" bullshit skins that only children like, further marketing to CHILDREN instead of fostering the more long term and serious adult players in VRML which fielded well over 500 teams by the last season! Meta fucked up HARD with this gaming genre; they really could have GROWN Echo Arena into something world wide and viral!
@@vidal9747 combat was free when they annouced the shut down of echo.
I’d love to have literally any physics based vr game styled after an isekai. Obviously everyone’s begging for sao to be a thing but I’d love to just have a rpg game like that have decent physics even if it’s not an mmo
At least with the GPT networks, should now be able to train one to be an "incantation"-recognising system. Recreating activating skills just by saying its name would be trickier, since you would have to know when it's actually intending to be activated instead of when talking normally.
zenith mmo is getting there
@@rainbi991 definitely getting there but it’s just hard to get into playing early game until you hit late. And not only that there really isn’t a lot of physics which is fair but still a tad sad
Have you seen "A Township Tale"? It only has bare bones skills/levelling, but it is a VRMMO with a full physics environment. Interactions such as woodcutting, mining, blacksmithing and carpenting, and combat are all physically based. Combat features npc enemies with melee and ranged attacks, resistances to certain types of damage (hack/slash/pierce/strike). Players can customise their weapons by assembling them out of modular pieces. The archery is my favourite of any VR title so far, it takes a bit of time to draw back the bow string on the heavier bows, making it much more satisfying. Pvp is optional on a per server basis, many servers have it turned on to facilitate duels, but random pvp is disallowed.
Most of the world is dev-construted, while the outermost forest and the mines are procedurally generated. The forest had a limited size with steep cliffs and paths blocked by poisonous plants. The mines are dark (Pitch black, you need to bring lights) and extend downwards with an unlimited number of layers.
It doesn't have the hugest playerbase at the moment, the development is a bit stale on the PC end while they're optimising their Quest/Pico support.
@Vaeldarg It also has a mod called "Voodoo", which adds speech recognition magic to the game. It's quite ritualistic, where you cast a spell you need the right items on your toolbelt and to speak the right incantation. There are two ranged spells that are easier to cast, but require preparing them with a ritual beforehand.
@@tachrayonic2982 The dilemma of speech recognition though is when to actually start listening for the activation phrase. There has to be something to kick that off to let the speech recognition know that the following words will likely be such a phrase. Otherwise, it'll always be listening and can lead to unintended activations.
RIP Echo VR 🪦
It will forever bei missed
@@Rootgm08a sad day it was

Didn't play it much, but it sure was fun!
Holy crap this got me into a emotional rollercoaster. From new prototypes that looked amazing to one of the saddest news in vr game history. R.I.P echo arena and all the hours we spent in it
Damn Echo was some of the most fun I've had in VR
Same😔
Long Live Echo 👑
the researcher's side of Meta has always been super top notch. The researchers on the AI side have been insane too, they've been an absolute heaven-send to the open source community.
Thrill, thank you so much for supporting echo VR so much We really appreciate it. I'm glad you care. Unlike Meta.
I need to try the Butterscotch. Immediately. Also, rest in peace EchoVR. You'll always have a place in my heart (almost teared up in that end montage ngl)

gpt4 can write a new echo vr duh
livestream when?
I loved Echo VR. My friend (moved to Brazil one year ago) and I (US) played it all the time. It was such a good workout moving all around and throwing discs. I simply will never understand why they threw away such a fun game. Sucks.
Someone gotta bring Echo VR back - and I'm pretty sure its gonna happen!
I believe another axiom is making a replacement
Lemming the creator of gorilla tag said there would still be a zero gravity game
Let the cloning commence!
Oh, It is.
I didn’t even know echo was gonna shut off. My first ever game in vr was lone echo in 2017. After finishing the game I found arena and I loved it. Me and my friend play college basketball and I bought him an og quest when it came out in 2019. Every day after practice we’d hop on the game for like 30 mins and play and when basketball shut down during quarantine we really got into the game. I’m not too into vr but echo was one of the games a played very regularly. I haven’t played it in a while but rip 🤞🤞
echo was a monumental step in VR immersion, and the most popular VR esport in the world. boz shutting it down is an absolute tragedy. as someone with literally thousands of hours in the game, thank you thrill ❤
I had the chance to try it just before it went down, just got my headset recently. I had a hard time getting into the game, getting beat on by vets all the time or even children who were just plain more experienced than me. I thought maybe the combat would be an easier experience for me, but I just got shat on so hard there it was hard to get into it there too.
However the immersion, movement, and quality in that game were top notch. Beautiful visuals and super fun art and concepts, too. The mechanics were fantastic. I really liked the shield and knockout system. The physics were cool and it was cool that you could grab other players.
I had already spent a week or so in VR before I tried Echo, and Echo was the first and after a month still the only game that has ever made me run into a wall (going after a disk) or almost fall over (the jolt of flying through zero G and hitting or grabbing an in-game wall and suddenly stopping). I think that's a testament to a fun, immersive, and exciting game.
I'll have to try Lone Echo sometime. I love the Zero G stuff that Ready at Dawn did with Echo VR.
And yes, it's lame as hell that they shut it down. Keep the damn servers up yourself, or release the code so the community can run them. Those are the only two decent solutions. The latter may have legal and IP issues, but the former would not have been difficult or expensive to do.
Hey Thrill, I appreciate your work and especially your appreciation, defense, and commemoration of Echo VR. I'm HUN7ERB from the first two Echo clips, and I just gotta say I'm overjoyed to see & relive a fun favorite moment captured in your video. That was the tying play of our last game, and dang, if that was you in the same arena, cheers & ggs
Hope everything is alright, man. Just know that you’re missed, and your fans will be here whenever you return.
All heart with that
RPI echo, truly changed me as a person after the 3.3 years I'd played it, as an e sports too, to all echo units, thank you, and I'll see you on the other side of the arena
This channel is so good. Every few weeks I’ll pop in and have my mind blown by all this cool VR tech. Your style of video is perfect for sharing this type of information, and getting people as excited as you obviously are. Appreciate your videos bro
R.I.P. echo vr, my first vr social game. So many good memories
Echo VR was, along with Superhot, the first game I used to introduce my brother, sister and mom to VR. The movement and physics were so polished and fun to experiment with and even on a quest, it was a beautiful game. Seeing it get so casually canceled is a true shame for the gaming community on a whole.
The best VR channel right here, thanks for keeping us up to date!
Much love Thrill!! ❤ Glad you took some time for you! Made my day to watch your video 😊
I really enjoyed my experience with echo VR the little time I plaued it before getting into other stuff. Actually got somewhere in the arena without needing to do massive practice and everyone seemed to be having fun
I really loved the campaign driven games in VR like Boneworks and Half Life:Alyx. Felt like you were going on an adventure and VR hits in a way you just can't get on flat screen games. So I'm going to say Bioshock is the game I want to see in VR.
Definitely BioShock. Bioshock infinite even more
not a thought i’ve had before, now is one i will have stuck forever
Great video breakdown man! I really appreciate all the work you put it to your videos. I wish you the best dude ❤
thank you for being so vocal about echo, it means so much

The plan has to be for Echo Arena to show up in some form in Horizon Worlds. Which would be fine but they should have announced that first.
Great video Thrill!!! As always!! I'm really going to miss that game😢echo! Thanks for the video.
Love your vids man
the prototypes are wild, like. A good wild but it looks good!
Rip echo Vr the most underrated game
I know this is late mentioning it, but I totally love the revamp you did for the intro. The Knuckles power-on chime is such a nice "IYKYK" touch, for the fans and whatnot.
Hey @Thrill, just wanted to say, that I really do enjoy your content. I find myself going through difficult situations with a lot on my mind. Your content is something that I know I can watch, enjoy, and learn new things that are relevant to me (as a VR Dev), as well as I know I'll be getting good, well thought out content that will give me some new insights and things to think about, so just wanted to share that with you incase you run upon this. Thanks for providing good and useful content that helps me clear my mind while still staying productive in my daily life!
RIP Echo. That game got me thru so much in my life. Thank you, Thrill, for acknowledging us and our sport. Our community. Thank you, for having our backs. 😢
RIP Echo. You opened my eyes to the possibilities of VR.
Sadly I've actually met people who tried VR and think it's overrated. I can understand it for people who might get VR Sickness, which will only get better as VR gets better. But I feel like some people really haven't given it that much of a chance.
Same here. They won’t try it more than once because they didn’t like it the first time.
That’s why it’s up to us to just simply enjoy it and let them know they’re missing out
The problem will be if Vr goes the way of console with battle passes and all of that
@@waterbottlecrinkle6973 VR will have to go down that route to compete, battle passes exists as a way to own your attention, and if someones attention is fully on console, its not on VR
There's always those who can't adapt to new technology. I'm sure there are a lot of people who died believing that automobiles were just a fad. That they had too many limitations to ever replace horses.
I think VR/AR as a society altering advancement is a pipe dream. I see it as a neat toy, and a very niche tool, and nothing more. No way people are going to wear goggles everywhere they go.
I'm happy to see so many people talking about Echo VR in the comments. I only ever played with my friend's headset because I never had one myself, but I stayed up late playing Echo VR at his place, and one highlight for me was I was struggling with my technique and some stranger I don't know was talking to me about what to do. All the while I was clinging to some cube, floating in space.. and for a moment, I was REALLY there, in space. Fully immersed by that subtle, real interaction in a way that I don't think playing a story-based game could fully trick me into believing. Anyway, that was one of my absolute TOP VR experiences, and I'm sure playing the game a lot and getting very competitive made the experience even better. Reminded me so much of the game they played in the book Ender's Game.
bro ive been watching u when u had 100k subs and i just subscribed, im sorry i hadnt before. Your content is great!
Cyberpunk 2077 is the flat screen game I'd want in VR.

Thrill talking about exploration of VR and AR reminds me of when my It teacher argued with me that he doesn't believe that VR (and software for it) is an unexplored area of everything. Almost didn't let me pass the final exam because I started arguing with him there. He never even had a VR headset on his head before.

I've probably had my quest 2 PCVR setup now for over a year now. And I'm absolutely hooked! It wasn't cheap to get everything that I needed, but definitely worth every penny. And I'm very excited about what's in store for the future of VR gaming.
Hey thrill, cracking video! These prototypes are the reason I am so excited for VR and where it is going. These already exist and as bad as they will ever be. The only way is up!!

The butterscotch would probably be great for remote surgery training. I suspect a lot of robotic surgeries in the future will be done with VR headsets and something like the butterscotch would probably work great for it.
I'm personally still wanting a bigscreen VR, for it's ultra-low weight. Since weight is the biggest issue for me.

Came back into this video to say yes! this stuff is insanely cool, and I've been keen on lightfields for SOMETHING at some point. varifocal is really cool, and may flex lenses are the answer.
I met one of the avatar designers in echo one time and he was a really cool dude. I hope he's doing well right now
Rest In Piece, Echo VR. you well be remeberd
You're a man of culture for saying you'd love an Overwatch VR port. Overwatch is such a shell of it's former self these days. Such a shame. I can only hope one day it gets back to it's former glory.
And glory it was. Overwatch launch might be my favorite time in gaming ever. I was a bit TF2 fan and was skeptical on OW but as soon as I played the beta on a friend's sons Xbox for like 15 minutes I was sold.
Overwatch was just such a polished experience that was basically universally adored with such a high level of polish. Every event was amazing with a ton of new content and it was so fun. I miss those days. I don't really play it anymore but I met so many cool people through Overwatch. It was such a one of a kind time in gaming where nerds and normal people all felt aligned with love for something haha.
Here's to Blizzard one day figuring it out. Their fall from grace has been historic and it feels like they may never bounce back. But I hope they can prove me wrong.
The ending was a tear jerker
Varifocal will make a big difference in using headsets in virtual work environments, which could be anything from having multiple virtual screens and virtual books around a table during a meeting, which can now be read properly when yo u bring things up close, or for things like Tabletop Simulator, where you could now lift up a card and bring it close to read it (rather than making it bigger from a distance using the ALT key). It's mainly something needed in social interaction where being able to read notes is crucial. Maybe virtual TTRPGs will become a thing, after all.
I would love to see an X-Com game in VR. Walking around your base, shooting down UFOs with your interceptors, going on tough missions with your team, and playing the strategic layer of the game from your command center. Your squad AI would have to be excellent and respond to voice commands, but if done right such a game would be an amazing experience.
RIP Echo. Thanks for the shout-out
Being able to recreate the epicness of the Yu-Gi-Oh solid vision tech shown off in the anime has always been a wish of mine too. Just imagine going to YGO tournaments and being given AR glasses to wear so that when the players duel, the monsters show up in full animated glory. Would be amazing both for the actual duelists and spectators. You could even add popups for things like card stats and effects so that information is easily obtainable without having to pick up and read the physical card.
It could be a really interesting way to breathe life into card games. Imagine epic Uno 😆
I love how your news order and content with this video was exact same as another youtubers I just watch a min ago xD
I agree, a trading card game like Yu-Gi-Oh! would be amazing to see. Thanks for the video
Man, this room temp superconductor really is everywhere. Hopefully that means that it might be a common thing soon
Finally some more news on varifocal dislays. I'm still using a CV1 because I've been waiting for proper varifocal displays with high resolution.
Of course I'll wait a bit longer for the tech to become better and more affordable but it's still good news.
One company that's doing something even better than Meta's varifocal lenses is CReal. They're using something called light-field projection/display (I don't remember exactly). It does away with lenses and screens, and beams the light directly into your eyes. It naturally creates a 3d image without the need for motors or moving lenses.
LOVE YOU THRILLLL
I instantly knew that I would love a portal 2 port to vr. Just the thought of being able just chill with the companion cube would be amazing
Flamera looks nice, you really get insect eyes with it! They should release it, as PC-VR wired headset. 😁
AH, a fellow Kaiba man. Respect.
Hey Thrill, it would be really cool if you could put links to your sources in your video description. I was looking to find that blog article you showed and cited the Meta prototypes from. Thanks!
Don't ever apologize for talking about Echo just for the people who never played it. They honestly missed out.
Every time you put up a echo vr clip my heart ached and you talking about echo made me shed a tear
Just ordered a valve index. Can't wait to play :)
Lol nice reference to the new superconductor😂
Yugiho in passthrough outdoors would be awesome, my kids love that card game/show. I think AR outdoor gaming should become a thing. I once tried my quest outdoors and found the main issue was the IR camera to controller setup messed up by the sun's rays. Maybe the quest pro style controllers could fix this, playing outdoors on a flat area like a patio could give players a bit more space for games. Space pirate trainer large scale maps down the park would be loads of fun.
I was calling it flam-era also (like a Final Fantasy spell) until I read on the blog that it’s short for ‘flat camera’ so it’s actually said fla-mera. Anyway exciting tech, great upload as always. Take it steady.
Huzzah, more thrillseeker content
