- Hello and welcome to TUESDAY NEWSDAY! Your number one resource for the entire weeks worth of VR news! I have been gone for a long time- taking some very much needed time away from UA-cam and the internet- BUT I AM BACK!
And it's for good reason. Meta just laid out some of the craziest plans I could have ever imagined. Almost over night solving (or potentially solving) some of the biggest issues VR has in the market right now. Of course- along with new plans comes new potential dangers. Right now we're looking at a new store, new operating system, and Meta partnering with other vendors to sell headsets with the new Quest operating system. Wild.

Well- here goes. Thank you so much for 5 years of Thrillseeker. You all have given me so much brightness and happiness in my life. I cannot wait to explore AR and VR with you all and make some crazy stuff.
I have been gone from the internet for the past couple months as I have been working really hard on leveling up and figuring out where I want to go moving forward. I found it. We will explore. Together. I also have no clue how badly the channel will be hit for taking such a long break away- but no matter the damage, WE WILL REBUILD! I have a lot of crazy things to show you guys. Congrats on five years man! The reason I started watching your videos is because you have such a real passion for VR that I didn't see anywhere else. Not many people have the courage to switch up their content style, but keeping the videos driven by passion is definitely the right move. Looking forward to seeing what you will create next!

The outro was so funny to me, he legit was simply done with the video at that point and used default premiere pro text tool to say goodbye
He changed it a while back from the espresso coffee making to French Press coffee making, not long after I left a comment making fun of his milk frothing and his super dark oily beans.

I usually change it every time I move/ mentally start a new, unofficial “season” of TN. I believe I’ve had 4 or 5 intros? Also I remember the comment on frothing! Made me laugh in agreement as an ex barista as a summer job many moons ago.

I remember finding this channel early 2019 looking to binge VR content after ordering a Rift CV1. Doesn't feel like it's been anywhere near 5 years since diving into VR. Man, does time fly.

the 1 problem I have with this is how Meta is talking about it, they are saying this is "opening the ecosystem" which is not the case, metas software isn't open source nor an open standard companies contribute to, this is Meta wanting more dominance in the industry
I hammer on this so much because I could see many less tach savvy people taking Meta at their word here and saying meta is trying to make an open ecosystem, which is not what they are doing, they are trying to make their closed ecosystem more ubiquitous
Meta's headset runs android with an OpenXR implementation and allows you to install any APK your heart desires. Not sure how much more open you want this. Windows is an open system and you don't get the source code either. A closed system would be something like a Playstation.

and how open do I want?
simple, I want the end user to have a say in their forced to be used software, take most android ROMS, dont like the launcher? swap it out, want more in depth control of the hardware? theres an app for that, open means customizable, and not only is horizionOS not customizable at all, its less customizable then android tends to be, android has APIs built in to do things like change the refresh rate of the display or the resolution android already has APIs and system calls to allow for anyone to make an android fork, but Meta didnt use them, or more accurately instead of making new APIs for XR and contributing them upstream to the rest of android, they use their own, they reinvented the wheel to make new cars using said wheel reliant on their new version of the wheel, a version they have much more control of, despite trying to frame themselves as the opposite, Metas takes A LOT of inspiration from Apple, they COULD give companies access to these new technology they make, and in many cases they do if you use their operating system, you take the entire package, or none of it
@@flamingscar5263 there are third party launchers and obviously there are ways to change the resolution and refresh rate or apps couldn’t do it. You have full access to all the SDKs and APIs needed to build apps for the platform which is based on android which standardizes app development just like Oculus ditching their proprietary APIs in favor of OpenXR some time ago did. Just to reiterate, you can install anything you want onto your device as well which is the opposite of a closed system like a PlayStation or an iOS device. This is no different from the model used by Windows and nobody calls that a closed system. I don’t get your complaints.
They're simply getting to it before Apple or Google does.
We all saw this coming. He who controls the OS spice controls the universe. A tale as old as IBM PCs.
@@Thezuule1 windows is closed, both windows and the meta os used in headsets are not open source (which by definition already makes them closed, same with playstation), they also have a lot of proprietary bloat applications that the end user are forced to not remove (think microsoft edge, or the many windows services that only function to send user data to microsoft, or literally everything that is preinstalled on the meta quest systems), you arent even allowed to add apks unless you tell meta that you will use it for development purposes and promise them that "youre a developer" even if that was a lie.
at least with windows you are capable of ditching it for something properly open like a linux distro but with meta pulling this there will be no open option (nor any way for an end user to opt out of meta without simply never using their device or pulling off jailbreaks that other users find)
with the companies that are pushing vr insto the mainstream being who they are (apple, google, and facebook being privacy nightmares, and valve releasing things at valve time) this is showing that the future of vr may be bleak
also, the capability to install limited software on a device doesnt make it "open", if youve interacted with the side quest scene and the apps in it youd know that the meta quest harshly limits all applications on it and wrangles user control away to fix literally anything (try changing your time on a meta headset, you cant. ask meta support for help? theyll tell you to just factory reset the headset. its actually rediculous)

Hey thrill, I just wanted to say, thank you for being here, for showing up and doing all this. I started watching your videos back in dec of 2021, where I worked an overnight janitor job, from like 6pm to 7am or something crazy like that. I just had bought my 2nd VR headset, the index in febuary and was saving up money to buy the quest 2, so in other words i was pretty new to VR. My job had hired too many people, and there was not enough work to go around, so I passed the time watching your videos.
Thank you for getting me through those nights and helping educate me on the world of VR.
I understand how exhausting VR and related tech can be, after putting in 2.8k hours in steamvr alone (90% of that being VRC) I've taken a step back, kind of same as you. this tech, VR, is weird. I feel really conflicted about it, on one hand its amazing, very immersive and can help bring people together in a way you never could before, but on the other hand it is very addicting and its so easy to lose yourself in it. I used to spend 8/10 hrs a night in VRC in those waning days of the pandemic.
I guess to see that, you're still making videos like this, brings me comfort I guess. It's like reminiscing with a good old friend about the glory days. Things change as they always will, but I appreciate your love for VR is still here, even after changing yourself.

Excellent video, welcome back! This was a great overview of the new direction of the Meta environment, it will be an interesting change when the general public is finally able to see the lesser known software we've had on Sidequest for so long. The idea of the Horizon OS becoming a standard for future headsets is interesting as it presents an opportunity for a much more broad audience having the same VR experience. Congratulations on the five year anniversary, looking forward to the next Schism!

Its great to see you back Thrill. I only started watching back in 2021 but you have helped change my view on vr from a woman who was pretty scared of it to a woman who is super excited about it and have been learning to make stuff like models for vrc. I also have been able to help my gfs overcome their fears of it and show them that while it can seem overwhelming or scary it is also extremely beautiful. So thank you from the bottom of my heart and I cannot wait to come along for the ride of this new exploration of vr with you

For a developer, opening up the Quest OS to other hardware will raise new problems. Different hardware and different specs will inevitably lead to bugs that developers will need to support and fix. At present, a developer can try to reproduce a bug on quest 2 and/or 3, but this change may mean that developers will need to have access to every headset that comes out for testing. Each piece of software will also need settings to adjust graphics/processing to allow for different hardware. Basically, standalone XR goes from being development for a console to development for a PC.
But that has also been the case for Windows and Android. It's the good and bad thing of an open ecosystem compared to a closed one like Apple.

I always forget how this channel makes me so excited to see the future of VR in the coming months and years. Been watching for a while now, and I can't wait to see what you do next! Welcome back.
Meta's move is still a good one, even if you brought up some pretty decent reasons to be cautious. An OS that other developers can build upon (and possibly modify) just extended VR's reach like crazy, and, if it turns out to be crappy with very restrictive rules, the demand for a non-Meta OS will be there. Once this demand is big enough, devs are bound to look into it. I think for the most part the industry is shaping up to have couple of big players like Meta and Google (not unlike PC OS being mainly dominated by Windows, Mac and Linux), and that is much better than to have a dozen different OS by smaller companies that end up fragmenting the already niche industry. Also happy 5 years anniversary. This channel is honestly one of the reason I got into VR, and it's been great.
