Fuck how they look. Listen to the song. It's amazing. Coming from someone who hated this style of music when it happened but came around in the end. Because talent.
The Black Parade is a rock opera centering around the character of "The Patient". It is about his passage out of life and the memories he has of it. "The Patient" dies and death comes for him in the form of a parade. This is based on singer Gerard Way's notion of death appearing to a person in the form of their fondest memory, in this case seeing a marching band as a child.
I completely agree! In my opinion, this is THE rock anthem of the 2000s. This is a song I can listen to five times in a row and I am ready for the sixth time. It's so powerful!
I get what you mean, I remember thinking similarly about these 2000s "goth" bands. And to be honest there are plenty of somewhat cheesy "emo" songs/bands that sort of fit that stereotypical mold, but this band (and this song in particular) is just amazing, incredible build-up, instrumentation and extremely powerful lyrics. "I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scars" is a message more people should follow.
"Because the world Will never take my heart". Is just amazing. Taking the absurdity of the beauty of life and love and empathy in an indifferent universe ruled by inevitable death and making it an act of defiance. Telling entropy to fuck itself. "You can kill us, but you won't stop us. We're going to be glorious".
I'm with you on everything, but they weren't really a goth band. I completely ignored MCR when they were big, because there were so many of what I thought were copycat bands around at the same time. I was born in 1966, so was brought up with UK glam, then punk, then a bit of brit pop. By chance I happened to be at someone's house and they played the Black Parade album all the way through. I was blown away. I wish I'd ignored my gut instinct and gone to see them in the mid noughties.
I was 100% a Hip Hop head when this song came out and was pretty openly mocking "emo bands" like MCR every chance I got (I was barely 20 at the time and still very childish), but even I had to accept - with an eye-roll - that this song was "pretty good". In actuality, I immediately thought it slapped hard, of course.
id say "famous last words" would be good to do next. the lyrics for that always impact you no matter what stage of life you're in or whats going on in your life
The look definitely requires some context. The album is about death, and the idea behind the Black Parade is that death comes to you as your fondest memory, hence the patient talking about how his dad took him to a parade in the city as a kid
Long time subscriber and first time commenter here, seeing this one brought a huge smile to my face. I was born in the mid-90’s and MCR were one of the biggest bands as I was coming into my teen years. I remember buying this album all the way back in 2006 and listening to it ALL the time. They’re basically the poster children for the emo counterculture of the 2000’s (which I was into, of course 😂) and this song is probably their most well known and was released at the peak of their career. If you ask anyone what the “Emo National Anthem” is, Welcome to the Black Parade will 99% of the time be the answer, in the most loving way lol.
In the early 2000's my daughter adored this band and others like them. I have always been opened minded and I loved also. The other band Red Jumpsuit Aparratus with the song faced down hit home, another favorite band
Its UNDENIABLE as one of the best songs of the last 20 years!!!! Its ARGUABLY one of the best songs in the history of rock and roll. And I'm OLD AS FUCK, and I'm saying that!!! I think it takes down every Zeppelin song except Stairway and Levee... For REAL!
I've been a big fan of MCR since I was 12 years old. I'm turning 30 this year and I still love this band. I got to see them live this year with my best friend. The last time we saw them we were 14 years old. Great memories
MCR was definitely a band that got a lot of stick for being "pretentious" back in the day, and I admit I was a sceptic of them, but this album/song has stood the test of time largely because of the quality of the musicianship on display, and that it deals with universal themes of facing death and mortality with dignity.
Even the video is amazing. It always has forward momentum. Either the float is always moving forward ever so slowly, or the people on it look like they're fighting against a heavy wind pushing them back. I'm 30+ years old now, and this song still means something to me to this day.
Give some of their others a look. I would LOVE it if you listened to Na Na Na. I don't think it gets as much love as it deserves. Others would be Helena, I'm Not Okay I promise, Teenagers (this one's fun) and the Ghost of You
this type of songs are not your typical money drugs women kind of songs or like a taylor swift song lol.. this is deep and needs emotions to understand what its all about

What's crazy (and really awesome) is that this song, Welcome to the Black Parade, is also its own mini rock opera.
This song is on the same level as Bohemian Rhapsody in my book.
It’s so beautiful and has SO MANY LAYERS
*new sub*

An absolutely beautiful song about death.

Why is the music double tracked? I find that to be so distracting I can't watch your video. Sorry.
