have you checked out falling in reverse’s stuff? it’s PURE artistry-vocally, lyrically, instrumentally, visually and emotionally. personally, it’s the only band i consider good enough to stand right next to MCR at the top. ronnie radke is a musical genius, just like gerard. UGHHH, i love these guys.

The Black Parade is a rock opera centering around the character of "The Patient". It is about his passage out of life and the memories he has of it. "The Patient" dies and death comes for him in the form of a parade. This is based on singer Gerard Way's notion of death appearing to a person in the form of their fondest memory, in this case seeing a marching band as a child.

    • @littilwood
      @littilwood Рік тому +2

Specifically, all of their albums are entire stories told through the band's performance. The songs all combine to tell an entire story. Gerard Way, the lead vocalist, is a performer, and he loves writing stories. Fun fact: The Umbrella Academy on Netflix is based on the comic series of the same name written by, yep, Gerard Way.

This whole album is phenomenal and is a concept album that surrounds the life of this cancer patient.
Gerard is insane and an artist in every regard of the word, he puts his all into all he does artistically.

Highly recommend just reacting to the whole album, because it is a story, a true concept album, and the only way to really grasp is and feel all of it is to watch start to finish.

" an artist in every regard of the word"
Very true - he is a graphic novelist and created the original behind the Netflix hit series "Umbrella Academy" amongst others.
I also have the distinct pleasure of being given tickets for my 50th birthday to see them on tour this years in the UK.
      ROCK ON !!

"Do or die, you'll never make me
Because the world will never take my heart
Go and try, you'll never break me
We want it all, we wanna play this part
    I won't explain or say I'm sorry
I'm unashamed, I'm gonna show my scars
Give a cheer for all the broken
Listen here, because it's who we are."
No joke, this has been my fucking mantra for years whenever I need to psych myself up. Such a great song.

Its definitely the 'emo' Bohemian Rhapsody. You should check out their performance at Reading and Leeds fest 2011, Queen's Brian May joined them on stage to perform this very song! Absolutely iconic

Hard agree.. Gerard def has a special gift to reaching ears of his idols. Id kill for a bts on how that performance came together. On a similar note, Liza Minnelli, being another connection i dont think any of us expected with not just her bit in Mama, but also confessing her adoration for MCR. I’d actually include Mama as another pretty paralleled new Bohemian Rhapsody terms of same insane instrumental switches, like 6 totally diff sounds in one tragic song.. and the emphasis on a haunting confessional to a “mama” in both .. i’ve always had a special spot for that song in my heart, and i never think it received enough recognition beyond the MCR fanbase. Gerard Way embodies artistry in all levels, the music, epic anthems/concept albums, his actual performance artistry in videos, the umbrella academy, his art school background always making a peep through his aesthetics in funny bts clips where he’ll school interviewers on his makeup, and just a naturally, but awkwardly very funny guy. He’s just a nugget of what i think makes a pure “Artist”. ❤️

yes! as much as it may be a clichee by this point: this song is heads and shoulders above everything ever done in this "emo" genre.
The structure of the song is phenomenal and his singing has so much more power than all the others.
I do actually think the Bohemain Rhapsody shoutout does make sense. In a way this is for Emo-punk what Bohemian Rhapsody is for Stadium-rock (exchange the terms as you want)
I must say, I do still think you seem to be enjoying all the rock songs a lot more than the pop songs as of late.
Might be conjecture, but for what it's worth...keep it up.

Fun fact about the whole concept album is that the lead singer Gerard thought of the whole Black Parade world and the outfits the guys are wearing were also his design! I got into MCR when I started high school, which was 2011. So I was a bit late to the party considering they broke up 2 years later. But their music made me feel things. They still do. Musically, vocally, story wise, artistically, they are just amazing. And to think I got made fun of for enjoying utter talent is still mind blowing to me. This song, this album is PHENOMENAL. I love this album, MCR literally was the song of my teen years. In regards with the meaning of the song. the album is actually one big story where it tells a story of a cancer patient and a grim reaper. Notice that there are 2 entirely tone to the songs of the music that's because there are two perspectives in conflict of one another.
The cancer patient first learns his sickness (the end) then the grim reaper introduces himself to the guy mocking him (dead!), we saw the patient's background that he wasn't such a good teenager before he got cancer (teenagers), the grim reaper answers this by giving the boy a bit of glimpse of his background before he died (sharpest lives).
Eventually the sick young man who was in denial before started to confront the reality of his death (cancer), the grim reaper answers this by mocking the young man, that because he was evil, he will burn in hell (house of wolves). remember that in the first song, we learned that the young man had 2 weeks left in his life, (i don't love you) tells us that because of his illness his possibly girlfriend left him to die alone. the grim reaper sheds up another light upon the reality of his existence, that he is somehow tied to the young dying man but because he's a ghost, he can't hurt him , he even mentions about girl in the song (this is how I disappear).
As his life fades away, instead of constant regret and fear, the young man took an unexpected turn and began to accept his death (disenchanted). because of the young man's response the grim reaper opens up his life (mama) and hints to us that possibly he died in a war as a soldier.
(Sleep) is the young man finally embracing and accepting his inevitable death. Moments before his death, we finally see the grim reaper and the cancer patient on the same side, as the grim reaper tells the cancer patient keep fighting and keep holding on (famous last words). Finally, as ironic as the song title is..
welcome to the black parade is the conclusion where cancer patient dies, and the grim reaper emotionally welcomes him to join the black parade. when we take the story in this context will make the lyrics have a lot of sense. truly a masterpiece of an album

I didn't see anyone else mention this, but...if you notice the bass guitarist is the only one wearing a medal on his chest. This is a call back to a mv for the song Ghost of You from the previous album, where they were all soldiers fighting in (I assume) ww2, and he was killed on the battlefield. With that in mind the parade must be those already dead come to meet the newly departed. I've done some pretty extensive searching to try and match up the medal (a Maltese cross with a dove in the centre kinda diving downward lol), it doesn't appear to be an actual medal from ww2 though, which I'm pleased about, because that could probably be seen as disrespectful (except if it had been a family member's). So, the best guess I have for identification from the clearest pic of it I have, is one that is the badge of the order of Saint-Esprit (aka the order of the holy spirit). Idk if there was a reason they picked that particular medal, or if there was any thought/reasoning went into it at all, other than it looked the part without risking offending someone. I might be wrong though and there may be a personal connection, you never know with these things, and I know nothing about the Way family history. I would have hoped whoever picked it up to use though at least looked it up to know more about it.
A further point of interest is that he's wearing it on his right jacket brest, which is traditionally where people wear the medals of their lost loved one (military wear them on the left), which could be another nod of respect with regards of not claiming a military honour...but I also doubt if that much thought went into it & suspect it was more likely that someone didn’t know which side or that it worked better for him on that side so it didn't get caught by or under the guitar strap.
For anyone interested in what the Order of the Holy Spirit is:
One source described it as French hospital order from the early 19th century, responsible for the care of the sick and injured (kinda like, St John's ambulance in the UK, their insignia is the Maltese cross but with nothing else in or around it, idk if they have St. John's in the US etc. in the US too). Idk if this is correct as it was less fleshed out than the other source below.
The other source says, they are a French Order of Chivalry created by Henry III of France in the 16th century (as part of commemorating his becoming king of Poland, as well as France, it seems) after he realised the existing Order of St Michael had swelled in numbers and how diluted it had become with regards the standing (in otherwords he thought there was too many people he thought of as too common, but who had earned membership through loyalty in battle) of the members, and he wanted an order that was senior to that which was to be restricted for a small number of powerful princes and nobiles, although that didn't last either & increased dramatically. It was abolished during the French Revolution, but was briefly revived in 1830 before being permanently abolished. It's now a dynastic order under the House of France, people are still nominated for it, and and it is still recognised by the International Commission on Orders of Chivalry.
Anyway, whether they knew itxs history or not, it was an interesting choice.

I know an easter egg from the whole black parade era. Mikey (the bass player) is the only band member to wear a military medal on his uniform. Its a posthumous medal because he was the only one of the band to die in the music video for Ghost of You, which is from their previous album. Insane creative detail like that is why i love this band so much :)

Most artists just sing their songs, the stand out artists, perform their songs and you just know when you have watched a performance.

I've put this on the spreadsheet but I doubt people will find it there, but you should definitely react to LP! (and by that I mean the artis LP, not Liam Payne.) I just know you would love that artist. Such a powerhouse, and not mainstream pop rock.

This is emo/punk at its finest. The entire album is a complete masterpiece. I highly recommend looking back and listening to the rest of the tracks on the album.
My theory on this song is the beginning part when it's softer and slower is the patient recounting the day when his father literally took him to a Parade so the Parader who is taking him on his journey to the afterlife embodies the spirit of a literal Parade to usher him into the Afterlife.
Throughout the album, the Parader goes from being completely indifferent to the patient's situation, to almost being resentful of him for the things he's done to then at the end being completely sympathetic and then proceeds with this welcoming of his soul into the Afterlife. It's beautiful when you really delve into the story
So much hope despite the horrible thing that is happening.

If you are looking for more video awesomeness you could try "Sabaton- Christmas Truce and Soldier of Heaven" Sabaton are a Swedish rock band that mainly perform songs about historic or military events. Christmas Truce is about THE Christmas Truce during WW1 and Soldier of Heaven is about the events of White Friday when many troops where killed by avalanches in the Alps.
