That was the best drum performance i've ever seen, and it was never about any solos. He killed it throughout the entire song, without ever getting out of the pocket.
One thing that many people don't notice and makes Mark's guitar playing all that more impressive, is he finger picks which virtually no one does outside of some acoustic guitarists.
You can tell by the way the band are looking at each other and smiling that they know they are on fire and they are going to give the audience something they will not forget
Between the incredibly entrancing music and the reviewers ecstatic reaction i was literally moved to tears 💧... music is the universal language of the Soul... humans can so creative, brilliant and beautiful... 🙏💜🙏
Saw 2 DS shows on this tour, the Montreal, and Philly. the Montreal show, opened by SRV, was the best concert I've ever seen, this song the top of that. I view this verion as one of the best guitar solos ever played
I’ve been playing guitar for around 40 years; listening to music the entire 56 years, and Mark Knopfler is always and still the most unique player I’ve ever had the pleasure of standing in front of: He’s why I threw all my picks away! His right hand thumb & fingers are made of FIRE! Hahaha…
I guess, to play like Mark, you must be Mark - never used picks, left hander playing right, formal teacher, with a great doze of sarkasm and black British humour... I am afraid, you can´t teach that 🤣🤣
This concert was in 1984 & the original song was released in 1978. I was lucky to see Dire Straits around 8 times in 1986, best experience ever. Mark Knopfler guitar virtuoso & the drummer Terry Williams is fantastic along with another original member Alan Clark on keyboards Their other amazing performance from the same concert is Telegraph Road
The band was formed in 1977 but Allan Clark did not join until 1980 (with Hal Lindes). The other original member on this was John Illsley on bass guitar. The original rhythm guitarist was Knopfler's younger brother David, and Pick Withers (the oldest member) on drums.
When Mark is playing slow, just a few notes, it still sounds great. He plays the right notes with the right tone, and nothing more. I think that's the style of a great musician.
Yeah.. no kidding. Hand picking, hamonically complex, effortless... but I have seen him jaming for Dave Grohl in the Studio... people in the know, know...
I totally agree, MK is a legend!! He's also over looked for his story telling ability in his writing. I think it chines from his writing for a paper and teaching English at a college prior to the band hitting it big with sultans in '77.
To be honest - is MK really overlooked? I guess, everybody´s agrees one of the greatest on the guitar ever - but too sad: Who knows/remembers Terry Williams? (drummer)
IMO the Chris White´s sax on the "Brothers in arms"-tour gave the song even an extra dimension. So glad, I was there.... which basicly means two things: I am soooo old, and I don´t think, we will ever witness something like that. Don´t know, which of two is worse...
This is a phenomenal performance. However, if you want to see the greatest live performance of all time then watch Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live concert. It's unbelievable.
Terry Williams was a fuckin madcap drummer in this video. There are places when it’s almost TOO much fill, but his use of dynamics are well GODLIKE, so that makes up for it. And Mark…Crikey, what can I say about Mark Knopfler except to say that I’ve been playing guitar for 28 years, and the three guitarists that most inspired me to pick it up were David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Buck Dharma of Blue Öyster Cult, and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits. Regarding his fashion decisions, you and I both know that when you’re the man, like Mark, fashion rules no longer apply-you make your own. Killer reaction, mate; I can tell you truly LOVE music, and you ain’t just in it fer the UA-cam clout. I enjoyed bein a part of your experience.
By the way Mr Knopfler wrote all his songs, mainly about his own life. The same as Sultans, he did everything, how often do you get that? TELEGRAPH ROAD, its absolutely amazing....
Terry is beating those drums like they owe him money 😄 Amazing rendition of this song. Simply amazing. I just had a thought. Imagine if you could have someone from like the 1700s hear or watch this. I mean, once they got over the Witchcraft which allowed sound this loud to come out of seemingly nowhere I honestly wonder what they would think. Would this kind of cultural expression be transferable? Obviously we can never find out as time-travel is impossible, but it's a funny thought all the same if you ask me. Just imagine a ballroom full of noble lords and ladies absolutely losing their minds to this 🤣
Fun fact: In 1984, during a friendly meet at an event for guitarists, a cutting heads (duels) contest was had with Eddie Van Halen bowing to Marc Knopfler at the end. His bare finger acrobatics on the stratocaster had one of the best ever, conceding to him. He was labeled fastest fingers in 1984. Very talented guitarist.
My Man there's a video made in the 80s I think 85 by the same group called "Money for Nothing ". It's actually the 1st video ever done in CGI. And the song itself is bad ass. The artist Sting participated in it. I really think you and the fans would like it. It will have you rocking with one of the baddest riffs known to man.
yeah this performance was from the "Love Over Gold" tour of 1982/3. released for us a to hear in 1984. crazy amazing band, led by the virtuoso Mark Knopfler. That man just is incredible. superb solo career too. My absolute Icon. great reaction.
I just subscribe cause you listen to the people when they mention a better version and you respond. I also enjoy your reaction and that you don't pause during the clip; well once is ok. I love this song and the band.
Welcome to old Fart real music from the UK this is imprinted in our DNA. I loved your excitement halfway through thinking - you ain't seen nothing yet 👍
Nice job BizMan!!!! You circled back and found the gold standard to this tune hombre!!!!! Sweetness!!!!! They did their thing!!!!!!! It’s a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll!!!!!! I so love a guitarist who doesn’t play with a pick as well!!!!!! Just shows their superior talent!!!! Mark is another guitar god!!!!!! Just saying!!! So says Austin Tx!!!!!!! 😎🍸
The interesting fact is that the “Guitar George” and “Harry” who are mentioned in the lyrics are George Young and Harry Vanda, who were guitarists in the Australian band The Easybeats. George Young is Angus Young's older brother, and Harry and George helped get AC/DC record. Peace out
Mark Knopler is one of the greatest guitarists ever, I tried to learn this years ago and you literally need fingers like ET for this. I rate equal or above Hendrix
Mr Knopfler wrote this, thats all of it, words and music then arranged it with his band, yes Dire Straits was his band. He then sang the lead vocals and played his guitar one of the best guitarist's to walk this planet. There you have it, and if he wants to wear a red jacket and shoes and have a headband on then why shouldn't he?. The same as you have your hair, its up to you nobody else. You have witnessed here one of the most amazing performances, you'll ever see and it was in 1983, 39 years ago. Now TELEGRAPH ROAD, ALCHEMY LIVE please, another stupendous performance. Well done 👏👏👏👏👏
Ever time I see/ hear this I weep RIVERS of sheer JOY which is what this performance is ALL about. If you experience this, and *STILL* don't believe in Magic - I despair for your soul.
I'm loving your reactions. You said you like little factoids. Bones of a dinosaur discovered in 2001, Masiakasaurus knopfleri, was named after Mark Knopfler. 😎🔥
Biz you should react to Dire Straights Skate Away... the Official version... not only is it over the top coolness, the actress in it will steal your heart!
Your were right the first time you said it. There were two guys on keyboards. Glad you checked this one out. The headband and wrist bands were there because he didn't like the sweat getting into his eyes and onto the guitar. The drummer was cooking and they were all just on that night. Thanks.
I just sent back to see if you've reacted to anymore Dire Straits since this video before making a suggestion. I think you need to check out Telegraph Road from the Alchemy Live tour as well. Also check out the lead singer, Mark Knopfler performing If This Is Goodbye Live with Emmylou Harris.
Great reaction and marvelous song. It has been on my play list since... can't remember! :D You have to remember that Mark Knopfler is a lefty-handed guitarist who learned to play right-handed... Which allowed him playing feats that few other guitar players could equal ;)
My personal Mount Rushmore of guitar gods would include: 1. Jimmy Page 2. David Gilmour 3. Jimi Hendrix 4. Mark knopfler Honorable mention: Jeff Beck, Eddie VanHalen, Carlos Santana…
Mark Knopfler was 28 when this song was released in 1977. This live performance was in 1983 when he was 34. Hell, Lebron was missing a LOT of hair at that age. I think he's still touring today at 73 (could be wrong about that). Great review!! Thanks for letting the performance play pretty much uninterrupted!!! Easy to see you loved it as you wailed away on the drums. Good you weren't driving (I've tried it and it's very problematic!!!)
I think Mark hung up touring in 2019, his back is pretty well shot. I saw him live in 2015, and I consider myself very fortunate to have seen such a master of his craft.
Don't miss out on seeing their video for Walk Of Life. It's great. This is my favorite. Watch him play those strings, he finger picks them. I think that's what make the song so special. Your reaction is exactly like mine everytime I hear it. 🔥🔥
There is sooo much going on here - this song!! Amazing stuff. I never tire of it. Have you done Telegraph Road yet? Has to be the LIVE Alchemy performances bc that's where THE guitar solos are!! And there is Dire Straits with Clapton, Sting and Collins!!
This is my favourite song. Seeing you enjoying it Is so awesome, and I’m envious as you experience the live version for the first time, one of a kind.. Should watch the same alchemy live concert and see Telegraph road, that is even better and this one is 11/10
@@Orbitalmercury I must disagree, with due respect!!
Absofucknlutely
One of the greatest live performances ever recorded
The drummer is on another planet...
Whatever band Terry Williams played with, he always gave his all. He is such an underrated drummer. Here, even Mark was surprised with him.
One thing that many people don't notice and makes Mark's guitar playing all that more impressive, is he finger picks which virtually no one does outside of some acoustic guitarists.
and Jeff Beck
Eddie van halen
He is also naturally left-handed...!
@@samlawrence4670only when he's tapping.

I'm over 60 and I think this must be one of the greatest live performances of all time! Pure artistry! What talent!
Terry Williams Welsh drummer - same strength as 14th Century Welsh Archers
The Welsh are very musical folk.
That drummer was just killing it in this video and I have to say, there is not a single more fun reactor to watch than you Biz.
Agreed.
🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿
FACTS‼🔥
That drummer is a damn BEAST!!!
The drummer was Terry Williams
Between the incredibly entrancing music and the reviewers ecstatic reaction i was literally moved to tears 💧... music is the universal language of the Soul... humans can so creative, brilliant and beautiful... 🙏💜🙏
These dude are having a good time... that's when you know your good. They drivin' it...
The dudes really knew how to put the effort in for the audience.
No matter how many times I've watched this version! I STILL say WOW!!! Terry Williams on the drums, beast mode!!

Knopfler is Master- THE MASTER
The drummer, I only watch this one and over and over again because of that drummer. I love a damn good drummer. Killing it.
One of the best solos in rock and roll and the man doesn’t use a pick. Drummer also off the hook!
This was July 1983
I was there and the stand out performance was by Terry Williams in the drums
Lucky you! Just watching on TV then gave shivers and still does!
This concert was in 1984 & the original song was released in 1978. I was lucky to see Dire Straits around 8 times in 1986, best experience ever. Mark Knopfler guitar virtuoso & the drummer Terry Williams is fantastic along with another original member Alan Clark on keyboards

Mark Knopfler was a real guitar phenomenon.
Is a real guitar phenomenon, he is still with us 😍🎸❤
Thank the Maker!
He is still with us amazing as always!
This is REAL music.
This is the only performance that ever made me jump out of my seat and scream on that final drum crash.
Everybody knows, what a genius Mark Knopfler was/is - but Terry Williams helped to evolve the song in the next dimension. He always killed it.
Everyone talks about Knopflers guitar playing but how about that drummer oh my gosh he’s killing it!!
This is why Eric Clapton calls Mark Knopfler "Easy". Yes he was older in this recording.
That was some crazy drumming in this performance!! Wow!
And of course Knopler and gang killed it!
Those DRUMS are EVERYTHING!! Get me everytime!
Should be in everyone's top 5 guitarists but is so often overlooked.

This is a phenomenal performance. However, if you want to see the greatest live performance of all time then watch Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live concert. It's unbelievable.
It's a lesson in songwriting and guitar virtuosity.
Telegraph road is the best music of history
I think that on this live performance there are 3 songs that are absolutely historical:" Sultans of swing, Telegraph Road and Tunnel of love ."
@@SebTheFrenchGuy 1 Telegraph road
2 Sultan of swing
3 Tunnel of love
Thanks Mark for the overwhelming emotions you send us.
Probably one of the best live performances ever! They look like they are having a blast! Great reaction ❤
