Definitely the best version of this song but Tunnel Of Love ( Live in Hammersmith) is up there with it for the best live performance. The perfect band 🎸
Not only did Mark Knoffler absolutely slay - their drummer did insanely well! Douglas Adams (the author of the Hitchhikers guide to the Galaxy) wrote "Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff beer."
@@Randsurfer He was playing for the crowd, and especially so seeing as his father was there to watch him for the first time.........he's definitely amped up, and I must admit I do prefer the subtle style of the original drummer, Pick Withers.
the backstory of this song is fantastic. and for sooooo personal. my local pub. I still live close by. The Sultans of Swing is all about life in Greenwich from these Geordie Boys at Art College.
I was there when this was filmed, Hammersmith Odeon, July 1983 I was just 18 and believe me, the place was rocking! We were in the circle and that balcony was rocking, I thought it would be down The stand out was Terry Williams on the drums, amazing So glad you picked up on it. Now watch Telegraph Road.....
Telegraph Road & Tunnel of Love & Sultans of Swing from that show are the best live-versions that the Straits ever played. so much passion and they never get old.
I watched a documentary on Terry Williams. Apparently he was in a body cast from age 2-6 and learned to walk on his hands. No wonder he has so much upper body strength
I live 5mins from the pub he is singing about. The Sultans of Swing were real. the Band played at the back. still all here in Greenwich Deptford. Every single word of this song resonates here ‘Way Down South’ in ‘ South London Town’ 🎵 Lots of this is riffing ‘Local Hero’ into Sultans …..if you listen. that’s so funny given MK is a Geordie. Band formed in Deptford Greenwich. but made in Newcastle.
And when he recorded the drums for the Brothers In Arms album, Mark decided he didn't like his style any more and had the drums redone, only keeping the intro to Money For Nothing. Which is arguably the best part of the album!
I was born in the 1980s and became a fan of Dire Straits in 1994 a year after they released On The Night which was sadly their last album. I spent countless hours in my mid-teens listening to and, yes, watching the video too, of Alchemy. My peers were into grunge and heavy metal and teased me relentlessly for my unabashed love for the most uncool British band that ever was. The lyrics, the music, the never ending and very emotional guitar solos and the singing that was really talking all seemed so right to me. This performance can give a person chills from start to finish. It really is Heaven on Earth. That Strat truly sounds "like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink" as described by the late, great Douglas Adams. The fact that people so much younger than me are listening to Sultans of Swing is such a treat and these reaction videos are so much more than just a novelty. What we have here is a community of people not just of similar mind but of similar heart and soul.
You stood the test of time..Those short sighted grunge fools are no where to be seen (who actually cares about Nirvana in 2023....no one. Cheesy throw away power chords) but Dire straights will always be the cool band on the block just because of sheer talent.
The first time I watched this song I sat open mouthed thinking how in hell did he play that riff, Terry Williams is an absolute drumming machine, as someone else has mentioned you really need to watch Telegraph Road from this concert as well.
This Alchemy tour live performance is generally accepted to be the definitive version of Sultans of Swing. Much better with Knopfler's ad-libbing both vocally and melodically, and Terry Williams' stellar drumming which wasn't on the original studio version, plus the extra instrumental section.
Always liked the Live Aid version but admit this is probably the best. Interesting how MK has done different versions of this through the years to keep it fresh.🎸
no need to worry about what you're wearing (you look fine) nor what the audience is doing enjoy yourself which you are doing naturally, intuitively better than most this experience continues and grows after hundreds of repeats ! bless you
I have grown so weary of the "Greatest Guitar Solo of All Time" argument. This is easily always in my Top 3 of all time. Alternating into the Top 3 is either David Gilmour on "One of These Days/Pulse Live '94" or "Comfortably Numb/Pulse Live '94". All three of these solo's completely and dynamically pull you into and over the Event Horizon into the musician's universe. Knopfler and Gilmour have more talent in their little toe nail than 95% will EVER have over our Iife times...
One of the greatest Rock anthems , especially when they play in concert, this is a seminal piece of British music. As with all live versions there is a certain amount of free reign for the band - they rarely play the songs the same way, they also change the lyrics "London Town" for different cities around the world for where they are playing.
They're absolutely the best, they're all playing absolutely amazingly and singing perfectly for their style. Love your enthusiasm , it's wonderful seeing the younger generations really enjoying quality music especially Dire Straits.
The song is about a real band that Mark came across in London - the band is still around, now just called the Sultans. This is my favourite track - so so much better than some of the incredibly depressing modern music.
Mark Knofler wrote music for the movie "The Princess Bride," with Peter Falk, Fred Savage, Robin Wright, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin and Andre the giant. If you haven't seen it, you have missed out.
Great reaction, a very top notch performance one of the best ever performed live in London I believe, I'm pleased you enjoyed it, I have been a fan since thier first album, thank you. 🌹🌹
MrsPenPal, you’re not only dancing, but your little sing-along was on tone pitch spot on and came with a depth. Solid and nice! Do you sing in band, too? Would love to hear. 🎶

What makes Mark Knopfler an all time great guitar player apart from the obvious is that he is actually playing a RIGHT HANDED guitar when he is in fact LEFT HANDED. Watch Terry Williams the drummer from the moment mark starts his second (main solo) he is actually playing what Mark is playing note for note on the drums. You will notice Mark sees this and turns to play along with him. Also Terry Williams dad was in the crowd watching him play the drums for the very first time.
Hi, What a "Blessing" you are to us MrsPenPal!!! This "live" version of "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits is absolutely "AMAZING!!!" I also truly enjoyed your reaction & analysis of this video...Please keep up the good work...Much love & respect to you!!! Sincerely, CR SoundDoctor
The drummer is insane. I’ve seen these guys three times at Athletic Park in Wellington 1980s and and Mark Knopfler in New Plymouth early 2000. Unbelievable, with never forget.
This version of Sultans of Swing, the Telegraph road are the greatest ever played by Dire Straits. Only one other live performance of anyone comes close and that's Disturbed doing Sound of silence. But Dire Straits will always be number one.
El gran Mark Knopfler!! Extraordinario zurdo que toca magistralmente la guitarra con la mano derecha. Maestro de maestros; considerando entre los 5 mejores guitarristas de todos los tiempos. ❤❤❤❤❤
That was happy. Happy is good. Tunnel of Love. Studio version off of Making Movies. Romeo and Juliet for tugging at the heartstrings. My recommendations are for listening pleasure and educational purposes. lol
Possibly the greatest ever live performance of all time and certainly the best version of this song
You could make a case for "On the night" 1992 (the last tour) in Basel. It has a saxophone in the build up
Definitely the best version of this song but Tunnel Of Love ( Live in Hammersmith) is up there with it for the best live performance. The perfect band 🎸
💯 yeah - will never be topped in our lifetime!
Terry Williams, the drummer, is just amazing and he shows it off so well in this performance. This is one of the best rock performances ever.
Yeah , he needs to buy that drum set a drink and a smoke
I love how Mark smiles as he's playing those ridiculous riffs as if there was nothing to it. Pure genius. What a gig!!
So true
The other amazing thing that no-one ever seems to mention is that he's finger picking this stuff!
@@56Ronin56 No, or that he's actually left handed!

I've been on that balcony when its really moving. Quite an experience. Sadly not this gig.
The drummers father was in the audience to see him play for the first time with the band
Wow that’s amazing!
Terry Williams
One of the most astounding and skilled performances, ever!
Yes, the drummer in this version went totally insane, a timeless performance that was in every respect the equal of the timeless guitar work.
10/10 for your dancing and reaction. you would have LOVED this concert. don’t worry we were dancing
I play this everyday for a megadose of happiness. 😊
You're right. This drummer is galloping through the song but it fits perfectly for a live performance.
😅
Terry Williams..One of the Best drummers ever... Great Rock n Roll !!
Singing is like talking! And playing guitar??
Knopfler is a BEAST.
I watched a documentary on Terry Williams. Apparently he was in a body cast from age 2-6 and learned to walk on his hands. No wonder he has so much upper body strength
Finally someone dances to this incredible tune... :)
😅😊😄
Terry Williams on drums. Say's it all !!!!
Terry Williams on drums is a hugely underrated drummer.

Terry Williams...legend.
The greatest finger picker alive. I remember this 40 years ago and still great today.
Jeff Beck has something to say about that.
This is a nice song to cruise around in the summer time. That little guitar solo near the end doesn't get the love it deserves.
The drummer is lit! Outstanding live performance
Yes, Terry Williams on fire!
The very best of British music right there.
Yeah this is the best version of this song, glad you chose this and not the studio version, it`s brought a big smile to my face.
The drummer on this version kicked it up to 11. Much faster and way more interesting than the drummer on the studio version.
And when he recorded the drums for the Brothers In Arms album, Mark decided he didn't like his style any more and had the drums redone, only keeping the intro to Money For Nothing. Which is arguably the best part of the album!
11? No way- that was at LEAST a 12!!👍👍
The bassist is spectacular too. So is the keyboard guy.
The drummer is other worldly.
You said it just right! 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
A band from my part of the world, northeast England. Mark and David Knopfler's parents were prominent in Gosforth's Jewish community.

One of those songs that you never want to end.
Yup!
That was certainly one hell of a drumming performance. And as for Mark Knopfler:... effortless fun!
Knopfler's little smile at 7:38 says it all. Love to see how much fun they're having up there. Legendary performance.
Dire Straits on fire! I think Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitar players ever. Listen to the drummer Terry Williams. What an energy he has.

They're definitely bouncing more on this version.
You're right the drummer is really killing it. Someone must have held him back in the studio recordings.
There was quite a lineup change between the studio version and this performance. Not sure but I think only Mark and the Bassist did both.
