I've got him top 5 easy... For me he's one of those guys, that every time I think to myself " yeah I'm pretty good" here comes Mark on the radio, and I'm like, "damn, I suck"
You can see in one point in the video where they are looking at the drummer and just laughing - he kept the tempo up the whole time and it wasn't a slow one :)
Mark, the lead guitarist, is ranked at number 27 of the best guitarists, although I think he is the best. Mark is also left handed playing a right hand guitar. He s a total musical genius and nobody will ever sound like Dire Staits again [except Mark}. I had the pleasure of seeing them live and it was a pure adventure and they did 4 encores. The greatest bands play live and Dire Straits always add something extra keeping their audience in awe. Thank you for a great reaction
Never list your favorite guitar player the same as anyone else's list. There's only one best for everybody. Be proud to say your own number one. No one else's opinions matter when it comes to music and musicians. That's all yours, enjoy it. That's what it's all for.
Those lists are b.s.! I've seen Mark ranked as high as #8 & as low as #32. I've listened to a LOT of rock/metal to know he should easily be in the top 10 on every list!
(14:00) I think the thing that's enthralling about some live performances like this one is that you've got a performer at the absolute peak and you see how completely in control he (in this case) is. You can tell from the grin on his face leading up to the outro guitar solo that he knows he's about to play a 3,000 note solo, and he knows he's going to hit all 3000 notes. And he's going to bend a lot of those notes to his well, and all of that's going to go perfectly. And even though every last person in the room knows the song and knows what normally comes next, he's still going to be able to surprise them with something better than they're hoping for. Whatever the genre, there's something about seeing masters who are in complete control. Dire Straits aren't my favorite band and Sultans isn't my favorite song, but Knopfler is so good you can't help but smile, watching him own that room.
I noticed in the very last run (the famous one from the record) Marc changes up some of the notes to make it even harder! Like it wasn't already hard enough.
The best? I dont know, maybe yes, there are soo many great ones. But: Mark Knopfler def. is the one who can play the deepest emotions with his guitar. He can make his guitar sing, dance and cry for him. Unique!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
This, this right here, is why you GO SEE (HEAR) LIVE Shows.....Whenever I watch this I think what amazes me most is how the drummer is NEVER lost/forgotten in the ocean of guitar Godliness. Break it down Jay. You're the best.
this faster version is more appropriate for a live performance. the drummer had his dad in the audience and was energized by playing in front of him in this setting. the rest of the band loved it.
This is my leaving my house for work at 4am song. When a band blows away their studio effort with a live version there is nothing more satisfying. Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb one of those and David Gilmour near the end is hard to find but the 9 min live version has about 4 extra minutes of one of Davids most epic solos or his band mates solo not sure who plays electric and whom plays the acoustic
Live Dire Straits was a force of nature and human brilliance the likes of which we shall never see again. Mark Knopfler was my personal guitar hero all through my adolescence. He plays fingerstyle-without a pick-but he could shred with the very best. Im 40 years old, so this made me strange among my peers. But when I started pulling off those riffs on my guitar, no one was laughing anymore.
I love it when someone appreciates the drummer in this concert. He was AMAZING. We were used to Mark Knopfler being amazing and he took it to impossible levels in his guitar solos in this (Yes, I am that old) .Note Mark plays without a pick
You get a shiver in the dark It's a raining in the park but meantime- South of the river you stop and you hold everything A band is blowing Dixie, double four time You feel alright when you hear the music ring Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down Competition in other places Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound Way on down south Way on down south London town You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing They said an old guitar is all, he can afford When he gets up under the lights to play his thing And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright He can play the Honky Tonk like anything Savin' it up, for Friday night With the Sultans We're the Sultans of Swing There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band It ain't what they call Rock and Roll And the Sultans Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole Creole And then the man he steps right up to the microphone And says at last just as the time bell rings "Goodnight, now it's time to go home" Then he makes it fast with one more thing "We are the Sultans We are the Sultans of Swing
Knopler is a guitarist that I can, and have listened to all day...check out Money for Nothing, Romeo and Juliet, and Private investigators by Dire Straits
Just made my day. One of my favorite live performances of all time!! You’re a real trendsetter too! Not enough reaction channels get to this. Keep up the good work🤟
This is one of those times when the live version kicks butt over the studio. Another 1 of those times that you should check out is Procol Harum "Whiter shade of pale" live in Denmark.
Great group. Great tune. Great reaction!! I might have shared this with you already... My dire straight story. It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.
Dire Straits were basically a bunch of audiophiles who got together. That's why their live recordings have such incredible quality. They hired the best people they could find and micromanaged the hell out of everything, to get everything just right.
This song never gets old for me... and this performance was next level. The improvs he did during the long solo should have been on the studio version.. perfection!
Simply put: They, the whole damn band, were on fire that night. They were jammin'! Also, the drummer was new (since the album) as was the rhythm guitarist.
Saw a MK Master Class one night on tv. He had some true masters showing him some of their stuff. He helpfully said 'Hey why not try this', then proceeded to do a fantastic version of this guys song after hearing it once. The dude was crushed!!
You also definitely need to check out more Dire Straits. A great ballad by them (with THE RIMSHOT) is "Brothers in Arms". If you want a more uptempo love song then "So Far Away" is for you. Great reaction as always!
Mark Knopfier is an awesome picker. And it is all him, he always finger picks. It is clean, precise, and consistent. He is a great player, writer, and for me, singer. Love your reaction. Thanks for doing this one.
I know this song well but have never seen it live. Great performance and great reaction! Another banger is “Money For Nothing.” Sting joined in on the studio recording with vocals. Worth a listen.
Singer plays lead. Mark is a generational talent. Music theory books have been written on his song building. It’s legit hard to believe he’s actually playing sometimes until you see him in a small venue and you can watch it happen.
This has at the time new drummer Terry Williams and you can see how brilliant he was. The other band members were just in awe of his playing during this. The Rhythm guitarist was David Knopfler - the younger brother of Lead Vox and pick master Mark.
Incorrect. Hal Lindes is the other guitarist. John Illsley Bass. Guy Fletcher and Alan Clark keys. And Terry Williams Drums. The original band consisted of Mark and David Knopfler. John Illsey. And Pick Withers Drums.
First time catching your channel like the rolling comments, love to see younger people loving our era music, just watching you hear the changes you would have lost your bolts at their concerts, it is a life changing experience,a true right of passage for us 70s 80s youths, this is a lesson in musicianship, showmanship, and respect for their fans. Thankful of growing up in the UK during this fantastic musical era.I believe your synopsis of the clarity and exuberance of the live performance is spot on, this just goes another 5 levels on the studio version.🍻👍
Dire Straits were huge especially in the 80’s, I have wonderful memories seeing them countless times, amazing live concerts, Mark Knopfler along with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd are 2 of my favourite genius guitarists PS: You should react from the same concert their song Telegram Road it’s a masterpiece
The studio version was one of the first tracks they ever cut as a band. It's amazing, but they were a four piece at the time: just guitars, bass, and drums. By the time of this performance they had added the keys, and been recording and touring constantly for five years. This is one of the great live acts of the era at the top of their game.
I can tell you really love music and want to understand everything you listen to on a deeper level...that's how I listen to music too..its not just throwing on a song..music is to be experienced in the soul baby....I love it "Woo!"
Dire Straits were brilliant. “Love over Gold” was the very first CD I bought, back in the days when CDs cost £20 each, and a CD player was £300! (1985).
Working class lads from the north of England...I grew up with the Beatles, Genesis, Floyd and pretty much all the great bands through the 60s and 70s, then came Dire Straits...🥰 man, you gotta love them...and that difference you mention between the studio and live versions? That's like the difference between a book and a film version..the books always better 😊
There is something amazing about seeing an incredible band playing live , a song you love but they show you what they really can do with it. I get you Much respect...It's a spicy meat ball!!! hahaha
Terry Williams , one of the Best drummers in music at the time...
Easily hands down one of the most amazing live performances ever recorded
The lead is Mark Knopfler, only one of the greatest guitarists ever.
won't get an argument from me :)
I've got him top 5 easy... For me he's one of those guys, that every time I think to myself " yeah I'm pretty good" here comes Mark on the radio, and I'm like, "damn, I suck"
AGREED!!
And Terry Williams was the best drummer they ever had! He was on fire!
yes, indeed!!
You can see in one point in the video where they are looking at the drummer and just laughing - he kept the tempo up the whole time and it wasn't a slow one :)

Mark should be in a separate list of his own where he will always be number one.
Those lists are b.s.! I've seen Mark ranked as high as #8 & as low as #32. I've listened to a LOT of rock/metal to know he should easily be in the top 10 on every list!
"They are simply the best, better than all the rest"......
Terry Williams on the drums is an absolute MONSTER !!! The best drum performance I have ever heard. Ever.
Telegraph Road is a must to react to. You will love that one too!
High energy from all.. especially the fantastic guitar picker!
I loved your reaction! I really liked that you appreciated the music so much; not worried too much about understanding the lyrics.
Thank you for such a thoughtful reaction. This is one the best live performances I’ve ever heard.
The whole set was done without plectrums.
Interesting fact Mark Knoffler was playing a right handed guitar but was left handed
Actually, he does use plectrums once in a while. Usually on Tunnel of Love and Expresso Love.
(14:00) I think the thing that's enthralling about some live performances like this one is that you've got a performer at the absolute peak and you see how completely in control he (in this case) is. A great comment but Dire Straits are my favourite. Everything else you said was spot on
I noticed in the very last run (the famous one from the record) Marc changes up some of the notes to make it even harder! Like it wasn't already hard enough.
Well said
Dire is right up there, and I have always loved this song. They took it to another level.
The greatest guitar player to ever grace the planet.end of.
The best? I dont know, maybe yes, there are soo many great ones. But: Mark Knopfler def. is the one who can play the deepest emotions with his guitar. He can make his guitar sing, dance and cry for him. Unique!
This was their last gig before returning back to their planet. They are aliens from out of this world.
Mark's guitar will sing you a song all on its own.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
This, this right here, is why you GO SEE (HEAR) LIVE Shows.....Whenever I watch this I think what amazes me most is how the drummer is NEVER lost/forgotten in

The singer is also the lead guitarist, Mark Knopfler. He has a very unique way of finger picking when he plays. MK is a master on the guitar!
Good job on the reaction and commentary. Great music really brings out the best in people.
Mark Knopfler, lead guitar, singer, songwriter-all superb. Hope you check out more of Dire Straits and Knopfler’s solo work.
I was there and the stand out performance was Terry Williams on the drums
Nobody ever had a sound like Knopfler. Brilliant.
Knopflers playing is always sooo tasteful ❤
i think the story was that it was the first time the drummers dad was watching him play so he went nuts. one of my favorite live performances ever
The drummer is epic.
First time hearing one of your reactions, great!!! 💯🔥
this faster version is more appropriate for a live performance. the drummer had his dad in the audience and was energized by playing in front of him in this setting. the rest of the band loved it.
That's Terry Williams on drums. One of the greats!
Sheer genius! What a performance!
Mark is the lead. The drummer is remarkable!!
How lucky were those people in the crowd to witness that magic
When I went to London I asked the Odeon to let me in and have a look at the space. It's not all that big!
Dont get me wrong guys. But the Drummer has got most of my attention in this version. What a beast
Same Concert
TELEGRAPH ROAD with an even MORE EPIC guitar solo. Mark Knoffler is a genius guitarist and song writer!
Yeah telegraph road live at alchemy is one the great live performances
Telegraph road is a symphony, it’s pure perfection.
don't forget 'tunnel of love'!!!
Genius. Nothing beats this. Was fortunate to see them live in the 80s. 😊
Loved your reaction, this is probably the best live performace ever
LET'S GO. This is an absolute banger of a performance. Hope it doesn't get taken down again.
They were on fire! Fire! Terry... maan.
Mark Knopler took 'chicken pickin' to a whole new level....... brings tears to my eyes !
Chicken picking on stereos
This is brings tears to your eyes and screams of triumph - this is real music
I have listened to this so many times! Never gets old
This drummer is dope!!
That was amazing!!! The live version is sooo freaking better than studio version!! SPICY 🔥 great reaction Jay!! 😊💓🤘✌️
Gotta agree, and that's saying something because the album version is some A+ playing. This is turned up to 11.
I have the 4k oficial disc of this show...that's I wouldn't let go to waste....LOL
The drummer is Terry Williams. Amazing. One of the best live performances ever. I can no longer listen to the album version this destroy
s it.
I've been saying this for decades, what Terry Willliams did here made all the other versions of this song so boring.
@@pedroafonso73 and Brian, could noy agree more. Plus a lovely lad apparently
Like you said simply the best drumming of all time. Terry Williams is a god.
Mark can play like this any time he wants to. It was Terry that set this live version apart.
I have to say - I can never ever hear this the same without the insane drums - that made it for me!!!
So this is just fire...heart song taken up another notch and swung down
I love it when someone appreciates the drummer in this concert. He was AMAZING. We were used to Mark Knopfler being amazing and he took it to impossible levels in his guitar solos in this (Yes, I am that old) .Note Mark plays without a pick
Terry made the whole performance. Mark can play like that in any situation; the drums are what sets this version apart.
Don't Apologise ! You know your music ! And you hear it ! And the way you spoke to it was right.
Knopfler finger picked the whole thing on a Strat! WHAT!?!
You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
There’s a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best baggies and their best Kings road
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing

I truly love when the music hits you and we can literally see the joy in your expression...this band cam do that to you over and over
The band blew themselves away that night too! They look freaked out at the end!
Great group. Great tune. Great reaction!!

I watch 'Local Hero' often 'cause it's a great little movie BUT Knopfler...well, his soundtrack to that movie could NOT be any more magnificent!
This is a GREAT live album. Telegraph Road is another highlight.
This song never gets old for me... and this performance was next level. The improvs he did during the long solo should have been on the studio version.. perfection!
phenomenally tight band, a joy to watch, Drummer and Mark Knopfler steal the show but they are all amazing
Simply put: They, the whole damn band, were on fire that night. They were jammin'! Also, the drummer was new (since the album) as was the rhythm guitarist.
The drums are more exposed in this version. Also the extension of the song at the end was simply beautiful
All without a pick. Smooth
Yes sir, Mark Knopfler and Lindsey Buckingham are the best Pluckers
JJ Cale was huge influence on Mark
1 of the most underrated musicians of all time, Check out the OST for the movie CAL . . . . . . GENIUS
