The fastest 10 minutes you'll ever experience!! It's possibly the greatest live performance of all-time!! The drummer is amazing, and the lead singer, Mark Knopfler, is one of the top 5 greatest guitarists of all-time!! And they're English!
Okay. I'm 64. This was my music back in the day. It is not often that I see or hear comments from you young people. But you Mr should have all the credit. You got it 👏👍
He was born in Glasgow, brought up in New Castle, did his degree in Leeds university and was a Uni lecturer one of the best guitarist's we've ever had he was mates with the our great guitarist Eric Clapton.
A story about going into a bar to watch a band in london when it’s raining. This is a real night in mark Knopflers life (guitarist and singer). Yes he’s one of the best guitarists and writers of all time.
what blows me away about this guy is that he's completely self taught, creating his own completely individual technique, *he's finger picking an electric guitar in a rock band!!!*
Plus the dude is left handed. When he was young and just starting to learn the guitar, his sister told him it looked weird the way he was holding it so he flipped it over and went righty.
Loved your reaction. Yeah thats Mark Knopfler. The best guitarist in the world. Im so glad I got to see them perform in Copenhagen around 1987. We were actually told by the venue to remain seated at all times during the concert. At the second song we were ALL off our seats and ON our seats dancing.... "slightly" encouraged by mr Knopfler himself. After all they couldn't throw all of us out. So we were up there dancing throughout the concert -everyone! And Sultans is the best Dire Straits song ever ♥️ Cheers Susan
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making your living like that wouldn't suck.
Mr. Terry Williams from Whales on drums, self taught and never learned to read sheet music. Hard to believe he is 74 years old now and retired from playing. A pure rock n roll drummer.
Mark Knopfler, lead guitar Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar John Illsey, Bass guitar Terry Williams, Drums Alan Clark, Keys And for these shows guest on keys Tommy Mandel 22-23 July 1983 Hammersmith odeon
I was there I have every Dire Strait's Album. I saw them perform this at Knebworth. I think was about 16years of age at the time as I think I'd only been playing guitar for about 2 years and I wanted to be a good a guitarist as Mark.
After 30 years, I still get chills listening to this song and watching this epic performance. Even "Prince" the singer mentioned in an interview that Mark Knopfler is the best guitarist of all time! Peace
Epic and Genius - you couldnt possibly have found two better words to describe this performance, by this band! I listen to it at least once every single day and it never fails to be a jaw-dropping moment. Let's not forget the drumming from the outset, WOW WOW WOW
If ever someone could make a guitar talk and sing so gloriously it`s the maestro Mr.Mark Knopfler. Thanks for your excellent and insightful reaction as always. Home from the pub the worse for wear, headphones on, volume to max, drunkenly find track on LP, transported to a place of elation. One of my all time greatest tracks and performances. It has to be this live version.
EXCELLENT reaction, EXCELLENT review!!!! Perfect...no interruptions....play through, absorb the entire song and performance and then give your reaction and review. I hesitate to say that I seem to be the only one who has ever commented on this, but to me there is an uncanny similarity in Mark Knopfler's vocals and Bob Dylan. Of course, I'm a ripe old 76 year old so maybe I have a more direct connection to the 60's than most, but go listen to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" or "Like a Rolling Stone" and tell me I'm wrong. It is a unique talk-singing form of story telling. Dylan's first hits were released in 1962 when Mark would have been 13. Dylan actually toured England in December of '62 so Mark must have heard him at some point. There is no mention I can find of Mark being influenced by Dylan but......... BTW, impossible to not comment on one of the very great performances by a drummer ever...Terry Williams.
I'm so happy to see you finally getting around to Dire Straits. Genius indeed. Every song tells a story. The madman on drums is Terry Williams. He came on one of these videos recently to comment that he is still "bangin' on the bongos like a chimpanzee" which is a line from another of their greatest hits, Money For Nothing. They played both at the Live Aid concert in '85. Luckily they were on just before Queen. Nobody wanted to follow Queen that day! Mark is highly respected among guitarists & has even recorded with Chet Atkins. Many top artists would give anything to work with him. He and Emmylou Harris did a tour and an album together. His personal story is interesting & you might enjoy reading his bio. I hope you will react to many more Dire Straits videos. You can't go wrong. Rock on.
The lead singer never lost his smile during the entire performance. He was having the time of his life! I'm sure the other members were, too, but his facial expressions made him glow. I think he was really enjoying the crowd and feeding off of their energy. I had not heard that in years. I am certain if I looked in my CD collection it would be there. I enjoy watching you enjoy the tunes I enjoyed back then. HAHA OK, enough with "enjoy." Great reaction to a classic! 🔥 Thanks, Debra, for your choice! 🙏🏻
I don't think Mark Knopfler ever gets the full credit he so richly deserves. He's one of the greatest guitarists anywhere. I watch him and I'm in awe. Did you notice how he looks into the camera while he's playing some ridiculous guitar break, and he just smiles as if it were nothing! I learned only recently, he's actually LEFT HANDED!!! Massive shout out too to the drummer Terry Williams. Just off the chart.
Mark Knopfler (of the red jacket and sweatband) is a phenomenon. He's from Newcastle and lives in London now, and he's still working at age 74. He released a new album in April 2024. He and bass player John Illsley (white jacket in this video) were the core of Dire Straits from the band's founding in 1977 until it finally disbanded in 1995. A lot of other people played in the band at various times, but they're the two constants. Mark wrote all the songs for their 6 studio albums. And after 1995, he launched a solo career and put out 10 more albums under his own name. He's also done 9 film scores and a bunch of collaborations and guest appearances. If you like his songwriting, you've got quite a journey ahead of you. I think you're right that he's got an older-sounding voice, and he really aged into it beautifully once he hit his 40s. (He's 34 in this video.) He's definitely got some American influences going on. He once made an album with Chet Atkins, who was a famous finger-picking guitarist out of Nashville, and he played lead guitar on a Bob Dylan album and even toured with Dylan at once point. But just when you think you've got him pinned down, he goes and starts putting bagpipes in his songs. I'll give you one link to get you started. This is a short piece of film music he did with Evelyn Glennie in 2016. ua-cam.com/video/xdAhSZB2lh8/v-deo.html
This takes me back to having a few drinks with my best friend and her husband . My husband and hers would rock out and duel with tennis rackets and tea towels tied around their heads trying to out play each other . But then who wouldn’t love to be able to play like that . Great memories.
This performance happen in 1983 in Hammersmith Apollo in London. The Song came out in 1978. This was the 2nd Song of their set that night. This was the only version I knew growing as a kid. When I heard the Radio version for the first time I thought it was too Short!!!!!
I could tell from your reaction at the beginning that you were not expecting how brilliant this performance would be. As it went on you realised that you were watching pure greatness. Mark is a pure genius, especially the way he makes that guitar sing and this band was a "one off". I have seen them live and it was the best concert ever and totally mind blowing. Mark is ranked at number 27 of the best guitarist by Rolling Stone Magazine but to me he is number 1. The story behind this song is Mark was in some pub and there was a band playing called "Sultans of Swing" and Mark wrote about the experiences of this band. Mark used to be a journalist. Everybody that hears this song for the first time is in total awe. Thank you for your great reaction. Another great thing about this band is the length of their songs, which have to be great to keep the audience interested and wanting more, and this has been achieved.
💥🎶🔥Yeah, the iconic recognizable sound of Dire Straits. It has been a minute since I have heard them. They were definitely a sound in the fabric of my youth. This was so enjoyable and so great to hear those guitar riffs again. Love the variety of music the channel is bringing forth. Something for everybody!🎤🎸💯 Love the quality and content of your reactions Hap. You always bring a great perspective on the music and lyrics!! Great choice Debra!! Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕
A incredible live! Mark and his sound is so different and his fashion was also recognizable which was pretty cool 😎. The drummer Terry was banging for nearly 10 minutes...insane. great reaction Hap as always. CHEERS!
You don't know Dire Straights? Ahhh... I am a boomer and they are just the greatest..! I am a patron and use my wishes with you to bring out the young talents. Maybe I should wish the old ones too...!
I remember when they first came out... this was their breakout hit from their debut album...and it was when the heyday of rock was giving way to disco, and the rock radio landscape was looking kind of bleak.... Dire Straits was a breath of fresh air, having their own unique sound and cranking out several excellent songs. It was Knopfler's distinctive guitar style that really made them stand out. Such a smooth clean pretty style that blurs the line between rhythm and lead guitar in a unique way. One of the true greats in my mind.
Mark is from a round Newcastle, respected for his unusual style of guitar playing. It is very recognisable, and he plays without a pluck, and is hard to copy amazing talent,
When I think of Dire Straits that recognizable guitar sound is the first thing that comes to mind and in this live performance it was lifted to an extent of musical pleasure. "Brothers in Arms" is still my favourite by this band, especially as it was played so much during the war in my country in the '90s..It actually became an anthem of every soldier here. But, besides that, it's a masterpiece that gives chills, you should hear it at one point. When the time permits, of course ;-)
Iconic song and one of my favourite live performances of all time. Mark on guitar and Terry on drums, there was something special in the air that night!
That's perhaps the best reaction I've seen to this masterpiece. You knew not to pause...because the whole song is a guitar solo (a narrated guitar solo).
Another British super rock group formed in the late 70's. You just dont get much better that this. 'Brothers in Arms' to this day effects me emotionally, it will always be on my playlist
Good song!! Like Mark Knopflers singing voice. It's perfect for the songs of Dire Straits style. Awesome group of musicians!! Fantastic reaction,Hap as always!. 💜🎵💜🎵 good choice, Debra!
A lesson in how to play a dead straight clean Strat Mark Knopfler one of those top tier players like Gilmour etc etc etc he has such a beautiful touch. Anyone who wants to learn to play should take a look at this guy no matter what genres your going into.
Another song that started singing in my head before I clicked on the video. They were British (can you tell? 😉) Late 70's/early 80's. I know a few of their songs but not too many. Not sure why. They are a pretty good band! What did you mumble there at the end about late 70's? Golden era did you say? Why yes I am 😘 This song was done the year I graduated from High school.
One of my all time favorite live albums! Thanks for reminding me about how much I love Dire Straits. The last song is the album is so amazing! Give it a listen.
Oh yes I know this amazing band and this masterpiece of a song and they have a lot more. But I've never seen them, so I understand what you mentioned about expecting a different, more "masculine and mature" look from this voice. That's how it went for me. But omg, this live performance was insane. There is shown some fantastic musicality in this guitar and bass playing and I loved this drums too 😱. And I thought you're right, this song isn't too aggressive, it's more mellow and melodic with that prominent riff. Great suggestion of this live performance Debra S. and fantastic reaction HAP. One more great band on this channel 👍. But I really also think that you have to be in the right mood in particular for this one and listen again ☺️🙋🏻♀️.
Great reaction m8…cheers 🍻! Now you’re ready for the next masterpiece…Telegraph Road from this same live concert…Alchemy Live…that will blow your mind🎆🎇 into a kazillion pieces 🎉😊…Telegraph Road is story wise massiv impressiv …
This and Money for Nothing are the only songs I can recall from this band from my youth. I've never heard this live version. Thanks, HAP! Great reaction as usual.
Only 4 live performances that i prefer to studio version. #1 Sultans of Swing #2 In the Air Tonight #3 Whiter Shade of Pale ( Denmark ) #4 Texas Flood ( el Mocambo ) Mark Knopfler SO talented, guitar and lyrics. Anything from ' Brothers In Arms ' \(ϋ)/♩
Telegraph Road from this concert is even more epic. The lyrics are awesome. The instrumental at the end is of biblical proportions. I think you will really like this one as well. Cheers 😊👍🎸🎸🎸
He is British. It was a story. He is talking about a time he heard a band playing and went in to see it. The band's name was "the sultans of swing", and weren't that great, I think. He wrote this song and it was their first hit. I believe he was 34 when this concert was done. I have listened to this video so many times and it never gets old. Thanks
The whole band were brilliant Its story of popping in to a pub with a band playing and they were The Sultans of swing. I was there at Hammersmith back in '83, just 18 at the time and seeing this still bring shivers... For me, at the time and watching it again, Terry Williams on the drums was the star. You're unlikely to see a better live performance. Now watch The Alchemy version of Telegraph Road
Have followed them since they first came out. Mark Knopfler has I've always felt was the best finger picking guitarist. Can never get sick or tired of their music. Try their other songs like Telegraph Road , and Brothers in Arms. Both were also played on their alchemy tour. Absolutely fantastic.
The whole Alchemy concert is amazing, one of the first album i bought. My favorite band of all time. watch from the same concert Romeo and Juliet Telegraph road Private investigation
I've seen 50+ bands from 1978 to 2015, including over 100 Grateful Dead shows, and THIS is my favorite live performance of all time. 2nd is Chicago live at Tanglewood 1970 "25 or 6 to 4".
Mark is a story teller with both the lyrics and the unique sound of his guitar. For the ones who has not catched so far, I will lay down a chain story from Mark. At the begining just listen to the lyrics and then listen the songs in order again: Where do you think you are going Private Investigations On every street
By far the best live Performance.
Congratulations. you have just witnessed one of, if not THE, live performances of all time. And I was there! The audience was in awe.
Mark knopfler (guitarist, lead) is a genious! He just left Earth with his solo's!
Yeah. That was impressive. Thank You so much for sharing.
Godbless.
glad you liked it...i listen to it most days ❤
Greatest honor was to be present at Hammersmith Odeon that night aged 29 now 67 but one million plays later still this man’s talent is unquestionable
Saw Alchemy.live also London..but pretty sure was at Wembly arena..Never to be forgotten..ever.
The fastest 10 minutes you'll ever experience!! It's possibly the greatest live performance of all-time!! The drummer is amazing, and the lead singer, Mark Knopfler, is one of the top 5 greatest guitarists of all-time!! And they're English!
Well, British, since Terry Williams is Welsh.
Okay. I'm 64. This was my music back in the day. It is not often that I see or hear comments from you young people. But you Mr should have all the credit. You got it 👏👍
Its the drummer that stands out
IMHO, one of the best live performances by a rock band...ever.
its normal for young people not to know this group i grow up with them and i am 55 but good music never dies and this is real music love from greece
Props to the drummer!!! He did a lot of work the whole song through.
It was like gun fire!!!Amezing!
And...they were having fun.
He was born in Glasgow, brought up in New Castle, did his degree in Leeds university and was a Uni lecturer one of the best guitarist's we've ever had he was mates with the our great guitarist Eric Clapton.
The original was 1978. This version was 1984.
I love watching a younger generation discover our music!
A story about going into a bar to watch a band in london when it’s raining. This is a real night in mark Knopflers life (guitarist and singer). Yes he’s one of the best guitarists and writers of all time.

He also cannot read music

The Drummer is something else....!
Mark Knopfler does not use a guitar pick, just his fingers. Awesome !!
His picking style is so unique.
It's his story of that day and the Sultans of Swing was the name of the band he saw and he wrote the Sultans of Swing about that day.
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making your living like that wouldn't suck.
Mr. Terry Williams from Whales on drums, self taught and never learned to read sheet music. Hard to believe he is 74 years old now and retired from playing. A pure rock n roll drummer.
I don't know if his parents were cetaceans, but his home country is Wales.
This is simply heavenly music. Dire Straits has been my favourite band since I was 8-9 years old. And still is
Mark Knopfler, lead guitar
Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar
John Illsey, Bass guitar
Terry Williams, Drums
Alan Clark, Keys
And for these shows guest on keys Tommy Mandel
22-23 July 1983 Hammersmith odeon

"Exploration of sound". Spoddon fella. In fact, I envy you. You've taken in the majesty for the first time. *Your* first time...
EXCELLENT reaction, EXCELLENT review!!!! Perfect...no interruptions....play through, absorb the entire song and performance and then give your reaction and review. I love the drumming in song. Guy is on fire
Yay, you have the best version. Terry Williams on drums, be still my heart! OMG he really was amazing, brilliant!
When it is over you did the exact same thing I always do....shake my head in disbelieve of how good that was!!!
So good!
Yes...
The sound of marks guitar is super.

@@pabmusic1 Yes he did say that.
I liked video since i liked your river reaction.
One of my all time favourite live performances. Great band… 👍
I never get tired of watching this Dire straits live version of Sultans of Swing. Must of have watched it hundreds of time.
Nice reaction Hap3speakz

They really don't make 'em like this anymore!
One of the best and most uplifting live performances I've ever seen. The part where Mark plays the sadly mournful guitar is beautiful, and genius.
Haven't heard Dire Straits in a long time. Forgot how much I enjoy their music. Great Band. Great reaction HAP! ❣️🔥❣️

Interesting rhythm but very rhythmical sounds👍🎵 I liked listening to this song. Great reaction!
Back then there was no use of auto tunes just pure talent to compare to today's music
You should react to Tunnel of Love from the Alchemy Live concert by Dire Straits

Welcome to the legendary Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler. Very few compare. Check out more stuff. Great reaction.
Telegraph Road !
This and Money for Nothing are the only songs I can recall from this band from my youth. I've never heard this live version. Thanks, HAP! Great reaction as usual.
Tells about the envy of the successful, that people know nothing about, the many hours and years of hard work behind it.
If you enjoyed it, do check out more of their work. I doubt you'd be disappointed. Mark Knopfler not just an iconic guitarist but a fine lyricist..
Only 4 live performances that i prefer to studio version.
#1 Sultans of Swing
#2 In the Air Tonight
#3 Whiter Shade of Pale ( Denmark )
#4 Texas Flood ( el Mocambo )
Mark Knopfler SO talented, guitar and lyrics.
Show!!!
Roller coaster ride. Same for me.
You said it.... Brilliant!
Thanks
Thanks for letting it play out. You earned a new subscriber.
Thanks for the sub!
Great song!
The whole band were brilliant
Its story of popping in to a pub with a band playing and they were The Sultans of swing.
I was there at Hammersmith back in '83, just 18 at the time and seeing this still bring shivers...
For me, at the time and watching it again, Terry Williams on the drums was the star.
You're unlikely to see a better live performance.
Now watch The Alchemy version of Telegraph Road
Mark is my guitar God! #1 of many many many. Mark is also the master of 'less is more'.
Dont know if you have done it, but same concert, Telegraph Road is a equal to this song.
I saw it, Paris June 1983 Palais des sports.
This man never got a best guitar player, this the best Album for me ( Alcamy)
The whole Alchemy concert is amazing, one of the first album i bought. My favorite band of all time.
watch from the same concert
Romeo and Juliet
Telegraph road
Private investigation
The first DVD I ever bought was from this concert.
Mark Knopfler is a 10/10 in this performance, but Terry Williams is a 12/10.
Yes!
Best living guitarist
I've seen 50+ bands from 1978 to 2015, including over 100 Grateful Dead shows, and THIS is my favorite live performance of all time. 2nd is Chicago live at Tanglewood 1970 "25 or 6 to 4".
If you enjoyed this, check out Telegraph Road from the same Alchemy Live tour - a different feel, but one of the best live performances of all time
Effortless is the best word you could have said - well done. Go listen to telegraph Road now.
The band the sultans of swing were playing in a pub when mark was in and they definitely weren’t Sultans of swing lol
Mark is a story teller with both the lyrics and the unique sound of his guitar. For the ones who has not catched so far, I will lay down a chain story from Mark. At the begining just listen to the lyrics and then listen the songs in order again:
