In my not very humble opinion, this is one of the top five live rock performances ever recorded. I've been listening to this for decades, and it still give me chills. The power of the guitars balanced against Terry's drumming. Never any better, anywhere. My brother was a guitarist. He insisted to the day he passed that Mark was doing things in this performance that were not physically possible.
otrame 1 Just caught your comment a year after you made it. I agree, this performance of Sultans of Swing ranks up there with Pink Floyd's Pulse concert of '94 and Gilmore's guitar solo during the masterpiece Comfortably Numb. Both of these I've been listening to for years, and I still get chills everytime. The feeling is very close to orgasm - I hope that isn't offensive, but it's the only way I can describe it. Your brother was right, Knopfler's guitar work in this instance bordered on the 'supernatural'.
@@dominicmuirhead9912 Just my opinion. But if you look at the quality of the lyrics and musicianship of Mark Knopler closely, it's staggeringly good. I guess by underrated I really mean somewhat undiscovered in terms of the quality and genius
It's possibly the greatest live performance of all-time!! The drummer is amazing, and the lead singer, Mark Knopfler, is one of the top 5 greatest guitarists of all-time!! It's the shortest 10 minutes you'll ever experience in your life!
Mark took us up..brought us down gently..then dragged us over the edge!,! And the drummer never left our sides!! I am still vibrating. Love, love love it! Peace and love
Drummer is Terry Williams, one of the most underrated drummers ever. There's a moment in the video where Mark Knopfler starts laughing at Terry's skills (just as paused to talk about drummers)
I've never heard this live rendition before, it's completely different from the album version of the song. It's exactly what I'd want to see in a live performance. I can listen to the album at home.
I was lucky enough to see them in ‘84 & ‘85 at the NEC. My son took me to see Mark & his band a few years ago twice & he still rocks! He played what his fans want to hear & not songs from his latest album. Lovely bloke,I’m gutted that he’s not doing anymore tours but I reckon he deserves a break! 🎸
One of my favorite live performances ever for that reason. Love the original but they played this like the rockstars it made them, and it's fantastic. They knew it'd slay 'em.
All that needs saying is “Dire Straits”. Been listening to this band for 40 years and every time I hear a song, I get to relive those 40 and experience something new. True masters of their art. And I am so thankful! Welcome to the club.
I am a guitarist so you know what I’d be. Mark Knopler the singer/lead guitarist is one of the most tasteful guitarist around. I’ll add another vote for “Brothers in Arms”. Great song with really tasteful guitar work by Mark.
What I also love is his brother David's solid rhythm playing - he holds the song's harmony together which allows Mark full freedom to 'play his thing'.
When you paused it around 3.30 mins because you were enjoying the guitar couldn't help but think he's going to lose his mind when the guitar solo at the end kicks in . . . . . .
And despite all his incredible abilitites, Mark Knopfler is humble though...he himself doesn't think at all like he was the greatest or anything near. But he's definitely got great skills, a unique technique and a unique style! One of the really outstanding of the 80s!
The Dire Straits rabbit hole is pretty deep. Anything off of the Brothers in Arms album would be worth a listen, especially Brothers in Arms and Man's Too Strong. From their Every Street album: Calling Elvis, Heavy Fuel, and On Every Street. And I'd be a guitarist, only if I could play like Mark Knopfler. :)

Terry is so tight its crazy, mad underrated
My favorite part, Mark is just loving it as much as everyone else. They were just flat lit for this night
I think Dire Straits were totally underestimated as one of the best live bands in the world at the time too.

You get a shiver in the dark
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on down south
Way on down south
London town
You check out guitar George, he knows-all the chords
Mind, it's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make it cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford
When he gets up under the lights to play his thing
And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the Honky Tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call Rock and Roll
And the Sultans
Yeah, the Sultans, they play Creole
Creole
And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
"Goodnight, now it's time to go home"
Then he makes it fast with one more thing
"We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing"

Love Mark Knopfler's guitar tone. I couldn't get guitar or drum skills like, both roles onstage look like a blast.
This song has great drumming. The drums on the album version of the song will absolutely make your jaw drop.
"And the sultans played creole" I agree, Knopfler is playing things that seems impossible....just great ! His band mates are players too...if not mark would leave them in the dust. Thanks. This is History.
You loved that bro, love watching people checking out different kinds of music. Keep rocking 😎
70 year old drummer-Ginger Baker "Cream Live at Royal Albert Hall (2005)" Toad (that's the name of the song)
