Andy Fucking Rourke, one of the most underrated bassists of all time. Update 5/29/23: RIP Andy Rourke. One of the key reasons that this band had such a sonically unique sound. The marriage of Andy's funky bass with Johnny Marr's iconic licks are the reason I fell in love with this band and he will be missed sorely by the music community.

Of all time, not just the 80s
Andy Rourke is a bloody good bassist.
+Andy Phillips Criminally underrated. People focus on Marr (who is a genius) and tend to leave Rourke in his shadow.
I totally agree. Marr is a genius, but in the case of The Smiths Andy Rourke was just as imperative in creating their distinctive sound.

They filled me (still do 30 years later) with joy amazement curiosity and a fighting spirit, enough courage to run away from an abusive household and to acknowledge and feel things that were previously too scary or confusing before, Morrissey's lyrics helped me connect to my own emotions. This is an absolutely remarkable performance from Andy Rourke. To be able to continue a bass riff like that for that length of time and bounce off of what Marr is playing with no errors is incredible. Just doesn’t seem humanly possibly to do what he’s done there. He’s like a machine.
Only thing I can really even compare it to is the Stephen Morris’s drumming on a performance of Transmission someone uploaded on here (which is a similarly amazing performance from another underrated musician).
