Is it just me, or is Johnny Marr one of the coolest people on the planet. He's super chill, practically the antithesis of Morrissey, and yet their dance moves are equally as hilariously awesome!
He is awesome. Met him after his show in Dallas the other night and he was so humble and down to earth. :) I always love the little dance he and Morrissey do at the end. Plus, that bass work. Among the best. This is among my favorites playlist.
@Lolly Lops it's like a sparkling crisp sip of tonic my dude. If you are going to be one of those "well it has a phaser an reverb" guy then you have no clue about tone.
Coming here to immerse myself in that wonderful punchy bass of Andy Rourke. A legend that will live on forever in our hearts and in the music he helped create. RIP to a legend.
When I heard "Jenny was a Friend of Mine" I couldn't believe it. Andy always has this look about him too: quiet, serene, and confident. Of course Morrissey is barking. He is an eccentric singer :)
+James France what are you on about? He was saying the audience was lucky cuz they didn't know at time they were watching one of the best British bands of all time
The Smiths weren't that popular. The mood if the day was optimistic. People didn't want to hear a grown man whining. It suits today better where grown men like to whine. Marr was always cool but Morrisey was a bit of a joke
Perhaps more credit would be given if they weren't such elitists. Not that many bands or artists aren't but Morrissey is known for his cocky I'm better than you attitude. The rest of the band did have to live in his shadow. He saw himself as 4/5s of the band with Mars taking up almost all of the remaining 1/5. A good lyricist but a lame human
@mc coolargeINITIALLY you'll feel that the Smiths is just Johnny because his guitar and sound is so incredible and you won't care much for what Moz is singing. But then, what he's singing will sink in and you'll be in stitches at his wit and irony etc. The guy wasn't a musician as such, but his ability as a lyricist was phenomenal.
The 80's was the Golden Era for UK bassist; Peter Hook, New order/JD; Mark King - Level 42, John Taylor - Duran Duran, Mani - Stone Roses... Andy Rourke is right in the mix with the very best! RIP
This is one of the reasons why I love The Smiths; they would play the most funkiest, upbeat tunes but the lyrics would be on a different spectrum, that's where the real music is at. I heard they do this on purpose as a way to make fun of themselves and I don't think a lot of people catch that, which makes them so great!
Morrissey's voice is as heavenly as always, but the rhythm section is definitely what makes this song, even Marr and Morrissey recognized this for once, dancing to that sick bass line at the end!
Oh my God. My song. I worshipped this band and song. Phenomenal. Pure magic with original members. Never another band will even come close. Morrissey’s growl. Rourke and Marrr. I’m sweating.
One of my all-time favourite basslines, and Rourke plays it faultlessly on this recording. I must've watched this clip about 50 times over the years, but I never tire of it. Went to see them quite a few times in the early days, and once stole Morrissey's daffodils out of his back pocket when they were coming off stage (tenuous claim to fame, there!)
I will never forget seeing the Smiths at the Beacon theater in NYC and this was the last song they played, Morrissey jumped into the crowd, and the band just played and played, it seemed like 20 minutes, I couldn't see or hear Morrissey, but I watched the 3 players on the stage just jam on and on with this groove, Andy Rourke you are a legend
Rest in peace, Andy Rourke Your bass fits the The Smiths sound like a hand in glove, and heaven knows I'm miserable now with the recent news. It is really that strange that you died so young, you were a handsome devil at the bass, your light will never go out and you were no half a person. You left an enviable legacy behind. RIP
Forgot what a great bass line this is... makes the song, and hilarious how people can dance to lyrics like 'Unruly boys must be taken in hand or a crack on the head is what you get for not asking'. Completely unique lyrics.
My favorite Andy Rourke bassline, not the most complex but its so good. This is the first song that really made me appreciate bass guitars. Rest In Peace.
I was born in 1986, by the early 2000s I was a huge Smiths fan! My mum wasn't best pleased, she was an alcoholic and died when I was 17. I fell in love with this band.! I spent many years learning this bass line and I think I nailed it! Sorry for my waffle. Rest in peace Andy! Xx
When I first heard this years ago I was amazed how good it was musically and lyrically. I've never researched the song but to me it was a play on the famous slogan Socialism or Barbarism and the often xenophobic saying charity starts at home. Knowing Morrissey it's probably more an ironic play on the latter. The former struck more of a chord with me as I think I was reading Lenin at the time.
Andy's best baseline ever and plucks it out unphased, upright and cool, a professional on his game, a magnificent performance with those songs that saved our lives back then, thank you and RIP Andy. 😢
how great is this. everything about it. RIP legend Andy Rourke. everything about this performance is riveting. they all sound great. the smiths forever.
All of a sudden, The Smiths have become one of those bands that are crossing the line between living and dead. I find it very scary, and was not ready for Todays news. Miss you already Andy ❤
The dancers here are paid to dance. Everyone understanding the song are horrified and fascinated. Watching music make a powerful, real statement. So well crafted.
Rest in peace Andy Rourke. Still the most perfect bassline written so far.
Gone way too young 😢. But his fantastically flawless funk heard here will last forever.
Fucking pancreatic cancer
Not easy playing the exact same thing for 6 mins straight either!
Met Andy years ago. And Mike. Lovely bloke, friendly yet reserved. Never forget that night. Rest easy fella, and thankyou xx
Yes
It's the bassline that makes this song, honestly. That's why I keep coming back to this one. What a powerhouse!
maybe, both are very tight. Great style

@@theWARMJET well the song was written around andy's bassline, so it makes sense
Andy Rourke RIP. A great player.
Sad news. A legend.
andy is a better bassist than most give him credit for
Although all the bass was written by Johnny
are you sure though?
I'm quite certain. I think if Andy had secretly written them or some of them he'd have spoken out during the court case business.
congrats Andy , u r the best
nah he probably wrote the bass-lines to the tune of johnny marr's melodies
Whata fucking bass man!
all marr's work
Nop. Andy writes the bass line.

I love how the guitar is played in such a naked clean tone that the bass can have that much treble and heard for what it is.
me too. Most bands amp up the guitar to that level when the bass cannot be heard anymore
for what it is? what the fuck does that even mean? these are amplified instruments you dumbshit
that guitar is not really clean, it has effects, delay, some chorus and it seems that some pitch is heard ...
Jose Ahumada he is the king of British clean sound you are being an elitist
@Lolly Lops it's like a sparkling crisp sip of tonic my dude. If you are going to be one of those "well it has a phaser an reverb" guy then you have no clue about tone.
THE BASSSSSSSS
Slappa tha bass man
Cool kids dancing this tune, while the rest of the crowd stands still ... those kids understood the essential meaning of the beat!!!
The others didn't know what they had.
They were probably into Phil Collins or some other shxte .
@@joncullen5382or maybe they just wanted to listen lol
@@joncullen5382 Peter Gabriel Genisus was great but Phil Collins Genisus not so much.😆
And Neil Tennant thought Pet Shop Boys were "the Smiths you can dance to " Oh really Neil ? Hahahahaha.

@mc coolarge lyrics not good? Compared to what exactly?

Just heard the awfully sad news that Andy Rourke has passed away. An immensely talented bassist. RIP Andy and thank you for the music.

The baseline on this song is soooo bad ass. Every instrument that the smiths play sounds bad ass. THE SMITHS ARE GREAT!!!!
Those who think playing the Bass isnt as cool as Guitar.... WATCH THIS!
Mark W it is kinda sad that ppl don't as much cred to bassists as theybdo to guitarist cause I've heard so really fantastic bassists over time.
