Really drives home the fact that at the end of the day, these are essentially Batman’s sons. Whether because of adoption, biology, or just being by Bruce’s side, they’re his children. The movie really embodied the name sake of its source material. “A Death in the Family”

I like how it frames Batman's no-kill policy in terms of weakness rather than strength. It's not that he's morally superior, it's that he's holding on to this thing by his fingernails and knows he'll become a mass murderer if he doesn't stop himself from killing.

I've always defended that Batman not killing makes absolute sense since he is a completely unstable mind. Sure, a singular hero or anyone in general could kill someone as over-the-toply monstrous as Joker and remain virtuous, but someone as broken and angry as Bruce Wayne HAS to force self control.
To the point that I think it's a logic that makes sense in real life. Some people deserve to be killed, some people deserve to be beaten the fuck up, and anger is many times completely justified. There's enough pieces of shit out there. But even if it's morally correct to beat some bully, that shit hurts you too (and by extension, the people in your life). Walking the path of vengeance, rage and violence is destructive... and as overused that trope is, it's very easy to understimate it. Speaking from experience.

Actually Dick Grayson is usually depicted around the 9-12 range when his parents were murdered and he became Robin.
Bruce's logic with him is that if Bruce could have gone out and helped people sooner he doesn't think he would have ended up the dark, depressed, obsessed person he is now. In the comics, Jason was brought back when Superboy broke reality- He managed to crawl out of his grave, only to get hit by a car immediately, Talia picked him up, and eventually threw him in the Lazarus pit. They do a pretty good job condensing that back story for this movie.

It resulted in multiple things happening, namely origin story changes, and a few people, most notably Jason Todd, coming back to life.

Talia found him wandering around after being brought back by the Superboy-Prime reality punch, but he was almost soulless and catatonic except walking around and being able to beat everyone up except her who he didn’t even fight. She was convinced some of Jason was in there and if she brought him back to Bruce he’d love her. So put Jason in the pit against Ras’s wishes. Then Talia secretly funded and trained Jason for years. And then ultimately after Talia all but raising him for a few years as a surrogate mother… she got angry at Batman for her father dying and Jason wanted revenge… so Jason and Talia have the most bizarre Oedipal sex I’ve seen in DC comics. I’m pretty sure it’s not canon to current DC… but for a while that was a thing. And Jason never told Damien…

In the comics, Jason actually resurrects in his grave as a result of something Flash or Superboy does (punching the timestream or something like that) but he's still got his injuries. He has to claw his way out and wanders Gotham almost brain dead before Talia finds him. She eventually throws him in the Lazarus Pit.
By this point, Tim Drake is Robin and one of Jason's first acts as Red Hood is to break into Titans Tower, subdue Robin's team non-lethaly and then beat the hell out of Tim for replacing him.
One of the main differences from the comic, and the one I like most, is that in the film Batman hits Jason's gun with his batarang. In the comics, he; for some stupid reason; throws it into Hood's throat.
After the explosion, Jason returns to Gotham and picks up where he left off as a crime lord. He has several encounters with Nightwing and Robin leading up to the Battle of the Cowl, where Bruce is thought dead. Nightwing initially refuses to become Batman so Jason becomes a lethal one instead. They fight over it and Jason manages to almost kill Damian, Tim and Dick on separate occasions but is defeated and put in Arkham when they team up. That's the last we have of villain Red Hood before the new-52 reboot which keeps a lot of the same backstory for him at least but time-skips or something and he's suddenly an antihero rather than an outright villain.

I hope you don't mean Batman giving a stupid reason for having a no-killing rule. It makes it seem that the Joker breaking out of Arkham and killing a hundred people means the blood of a hundred people are now on billionare Bruce Wayne's hands. Why? Because billionaire Bruce Wayne tracked down the Joker, took him down and handed him over to Jim Gordon and his cops who handed him over to the courts who handed him over to Arkham.
So why are Gordon hands clean when he can put a bullet to the back of the Joker's head? Why are the cops and courts and the staff of Arkham clean of blood? Why is all the people in Gotham who can wield a sniper rifle clean of blood? Why is the Kryptonian in Metropolis or the Amazon from Themyscira free of blood when they could just go to Gotham and flick a coin through an Arkham window and through the Joker's brain, espousing "It had to be done. He was a menace to society."?
It's also a stupid reason for a no-killing rule since it implies any cop who ended up in a "shoot to kill or let something worse happen" situation and shot to kill is now _lost forever down a dark path._ Puh-lease!
A much better reason is that it is NOT Bruce Wayne's mission to save Gotham City, it is his misson to help the good people of Gotham City (e.g. Jim Gordon and Dr. Leslie Tompkins) save Gotham City.
To be Gotham City's self-appointed mysterious masked executioner (basically beheading the Joker in town square Eddard Stark style for being a menace to society) would be counterproductive to the mission.

In the 80’s Jason Todd was a unpopular character. When he was created, he was basically a Grayson copy with a very similar origin of his parents being acrobats. The only differences being Jason's parents were killed by Killer Croc, and he actually dyed his hair black after Batman made him Robin. After “Crisis on Infinite Earths” Jason was given the origin we all know of him stealing tires off the Batmobile which Batman had parked in Crime Alley that night. Post-crisis Jason was a rebel who often didn't listen to Batman. In 1988, Jason was captured by Joker and Joker started beating him with a crowbar, after which he uses a bomb to blow up the warehouse with Jason inside. Fans voted (by calling one of two numbers) on whether Jason would survive or not. 10,614 votes altogether. 5,343 votes to 5,271, the votes for his death won by 72. There is a rumor that one guy may have rigged the vote, but it hasn't been proven. Jason died and wasn't brought back until 2005, when he came back as the badass Red Hood.

But that depends on the circumstances. He kills Harvey Dent in that movie, does he consider himself "the villain" in the next movie? No. Does he consider himself Joe Chill? No.
Now I understand the... wise words but the movie proves you wrong regarding this topic.
Superman kills Zod in Man Of Steel, is he suddenly "the villain" because of it? Is he immediately Zod now, killing to get his way? No, it just doesn't work like that.
_"Bruce knows he himself is unstable with the trauma he suffered, because he knows if he snaps, the bodies will keep piling up, and his speech is him putting his internal struggle to words"_
And this is just you spelling out that speech to me, you're not adding anything. What you then say about Injustice Batman and this movie's Jason is all beside the point.
I'll put it in overly strong terms to get my point across because I'm tired and would just be vague otherwise:
Your "unstable" Batman is an idiot. He's an immature musclehead. He says he fantasizes daily of torturing the Joker for all the pain he's caused others and then terminating him which l hope is exaggeration for Jason's sake and he's just a good liar. But what makes him an immature idiot musclehead is that a Batman who is not an immature idiot musclehead would say what I've suggested: "That would be sabotaging the mission. There would have been no Bat-Signal. There would have been no alliance with Gordon. There would just be more bullets flying at me because I would just be another costumed killer marking territory, for the people of Gotham to lock their doors against, making it a worse place to live. That is the exact opposite of what I created Batman for. I would have done more good becoming the crime lord of Gotham from the beginning, as you are doing."
Why? Because that works without Bruce bringing _Bruce Wayne's individual psyche_ into it and certainly without making it _all about it._

Though the movie took liberties with his return. I believe the original version of Red Hood's return was because of Superboy punching reality and bloop there was a Jason Todd alive now.
    In his coffin. Alive. Buried.

I think that's the strength of some of these DC animated movies. They'll take stories like Under the Red Hood and Flashpoint, cut a lot of the fat out and focus the narrative on just the more important elements. Or stories like the Judas Contract and Death of Superman, stories pretty much everyone already knows, and thus they're able to have a little more freedom in constructing a new story out of the story's basic premise.

He has explained that. He let Dick become Robin cause if he didn't Dick would have ended up just like Bruce, never allowing himself to be happy and dedicating his life to their crusade. But Alfred has explained as well that Dick was always different, and that he brought light to Bruce's life. Bruce has also said that he considers Dick a better man than himself, and that's why believes Nightwing is enough to protect Gotham in his death, he doesn't want Dick to end up like Bruce.

The thing that keeps bringing me back to this movie is just how good it is even if you know red hood is Jason. Theres still so much good writing and character work that they dont have to rely on the big reveal, trying to shock the audience. Instead, they bank on us caring enough about bruce and jason as characters that THAT will fuel our engagement. So good.

I gotta admit, Joke stopping barman from diffusing the bomb, and (potentially) sacrificing his life only for sake of making this an ironic punchline is one of the best examples of how you describe his character.
This lunatic only cares about stuff being funny.
A little bit unrelated but another great scene of his (which I sadly forgot the source of) is when he asked a random goon to park his car. Goon was obviously terrified at prospect of interacting with the joker, but much to his confusion Joker let him live.
    "You... not gonna kill me?"
"Oh please, I don't kill everyone I see, I only kill people when its *funny*."
And after saying that and goon starting to walk away, Joker just killed him. Ironic, since if goon didn't asked about it, it wouldn't create a great punchline in Joker killing him. Seriously there is a good reason why everyone describe "Chaotic Evil" as "the Joker alignment"

You fell in love with the Batman who gives a stupid reason for having a no-killing rule?
A much better reason is that it is NOT Bruce Wayne's mission to save Gotham City, it is his misson to help the good people of Gotham City (e.g. Jim Gordon and Dr. Leslie Tompkins) save Gotham City.
To be Gotham City's self-appointed mysterious masked executioner (basically beheading the Joker in town square Eddard Stark style for being a menace to society) would be counterproductive to the mission.

Batman is so strict about his code because he is a "killer" at his core, you have people that are naturally good like Clark Kent or Dick Grayson but Bruce isn't one of them. He's not naturally good so he has to try very, very hard to be a good person. He can so easily turn to that side but once he does it would be hard for him to stop (like he said). I think he also doesn't want his children to live with the guilt of them murdering people, no matter how much they may deserve it. It's a pretty cool concept.

In the comics the Joker's origin from the 1951 was that he was the criminal leader of the Red Hood gang. He wore a red hood that hid all his feature. Batman confronts the gang at the Ace Chemical factory and during the fight the Red Hood falls into a vat of chemicals. When he washes out the drain his skin has turn chalk white, his hair green and his lips ruby red and it drives him mad. There are slight recons here and there over the years but that's the basic origin.
