When it happens to me, it's usually(for whatever reason)right before my cycle. It comes if I eat 3 hours before bedtime. Last night I ate exactly 3 hours before, it came but not as heavily(thank goodness). When it comes on hard, which is nearly every time, It wakes me up by feeling a sloshing of the acid/vomit tasting liquid, into my throat or back of nose. I immediately sit up. Usually my pets are wide awake and know it's happening before I do.. they all circle around me and stare like they are nervous. Then I sit there and have a horrific climbing of burning that takes my entire breath away, feels like my chest & heart will explode from the spicy/heavy pain. I also have to swallow over & over again this entire time.. over and over. Usually it reaches a"peak",at that point I'm usually trembling all over from the pain. That lasts about 2 mins but it's super scary. There's nothing to stop that climbing up.. after the initial splash that wakes me up. I am upright the whole time.. it all lasts around 20 mins to 40 mins. When it settles, I am finally able to lay down on my left, highly elevated. I take tiny sips of cool water moments before trying to go back to sleep. Every breath is painful. When I wake up in the morning, I have asperated bc I have a WET, heavy cough every time. Agree with all of what you have said….finding out why and being proactive rather than just trying to take pills to stop it. Losing even a small amount of weight can help too…10# can make a huge difference. Many PPI have long term side effects that we still are learning more about.
Correction: patients can be wrongly diagnosed with asthma when in fact the primary problem was GERD ( GORD ) .. Asthma , on the other hand , can not be cured . That is why respiratory physicians should understand lifestyle and food as medicine !!
I agree with your statement, except for the part where you're implying GERD is curable, when it's not. GERD is incurable, but you can treat and cope with it by eating healthy foods, exercising, and just living a healthy life in general, so you get less to no heartburn, let's say.
Removing carbs eliminated my heart burn, and adding any particularly sugary foods would consistently make it return. Also, drinking some vinegar would treat my heart burn quicker and more reliably than antacids or proton pump inhibitors.

In a lot of cases, reflux is caused by the stomach acid not being acidic enough so that that the stomach muscle (don't know the english name) does not close and allows acid to get up. So a real solution is to take something like betaine hcl tablets.
Also, stop eating all processed foods! Avoid artificial preservatives! Eat only "clean" fresh wholesome foods! I did this and no more wheezing! Stay well! 👍🏻
You really shouldn't eat junk food, then. It's sad, I know, but you can moderate your consumption if you want, although it's better if you just stop eating it almost completely. I said almost because maybe you can still eat junk foods, but only once or twice a year or something, for your health's sake.

I wonder what's your opinion on drinking lemon juice for GERD. Just squeeze two lemons and swallow the juice straight up once a day, did that for 2 weeks and my GERD was gone. A possible explanation is that the sphincter is not fully closed due to lack of acidity in the stomach. By increasing pH with lemon juice, the sphincter closes tight and reflux just stops.
@@divine1562 yeah, I had the same reaction when told about it, very counterintuitive. I was taking pantoprazole for months following doctor's orders, symptoms improved, as soon as I stopped, they all came back. I said hell I'll try lemons, after about two weeks I was back to normal (I might have improved despite the lemons, hard to prove either way, but I didn't get worse and now only swallow lemon juice for 1 or 2 days very occasionally, when symptoms return, which is rare, and I improve). You want the juice of 2 lemons with all the pulp you get (don't sift it) and to swallow fast, don't let the juice linger in your mouth, it's bad for your teeth and it'll fire up your salivary glands like crazy (plus the extra acidity can cause canker sores). Just wash your mouth afterwards and don't swallow any water with the juice or after for a while, let it linger undiluted in the stomach a bit. Apparently lemons for stomach issues is part of greek culture since ancient times.

Also, it would be nice to sleep again, it’s extremely difficult to sleep at a 45 degree incline. I can’t even enjoy my life. There is compelling evidence that suggests that heartburn is caused by too little acid in the stomach which causes the sphincter to relax, allowing the fluid (still somewhat acidic) to enter the esophagus which gets burned. Yeah, that's scary, I know, but just take in mind that GERD can't actually kill you, but can give you a sensation that makes you feel that way. I have GERD myself, so I can relate to that. I'm usually irrational when that episode happens, but at least I know GERD can't actually kill you, although it can lead to deadly diseases such as esophageal cancer, but even then, the chances of that happening is very rare.

Medcline wedge pillow probably saved my life. It certainly helps me sleep at night, and I have no more GERD issues. I've been using one for years now.
Same with me i don't even remember the last time i ate white bread
Sorry, can’t give up those 4 things. Will have to go with not eating before bed 😅

In a lot of cases, reflux is caused by the stomach acid not being acidic enough so that that the stomach muscle (don't know the english name) does not close and allows acid to get up. So a real solution is to take something like betaine hcl tablets.
I might try this for a week or two to see if my asthma goes away
Also, stop eating all processed foods! Avoid artificial preservatives! Eat only "clean" fresh wholesome foods! I did this and no more wheezing! Stay well! 👍🏻

You really shouldn't eat junk food, then. It's sad, I know, but you can moderate your consumption if you want, although it's better if you just stop eating it almost completely.
Wow is that true. I've been told to avoid lemon and all other citrus fruits! 😓

One should read the book “Stomach acid is good for you” by an MD I think his name is Wright.

Do alcohol, caffeine (methyxanthines) and capsaicin (is this what in American terminology means 'spicy'?) relax the lower esophageal sphincter? I'll check the literature and get back :-) From Australia.
My GERD went away when I quit coffee and eat smaller meals. Yes caffeine relaxes the esophageal sphincter making GERD worse. Most people don’t seem to know that. Thanks for spreading the word.
