  • Most of us have experienced heartburn at one time or another, but for millions of people it is a chronic and painful condition. As a result, acid-blocking medications are among the top-selling drugs in America today. However, taking an acid blocker does nothing to address whatever is causing the heartburn and these drugs can have all sorts of negative side effects. Additionally, while acid blocking drugs block acid that can cause symptoms of heartburn and reflux, your body actually needs stomach acid to stay healthy. So, the key isn’t taking the drug. It’s finding the cause. ⁣⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣⁣
    In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Todd LePine to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to treating heartburn and reflux. Together they discuss how to find the real causes of reflux and heartburn, get rid of them, and use the right foods, nutrients, and lifestyle therapies to heal the problem.⁣⁣⁣
    ⁣⁣⁣
    Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.⁣⁣⁣

    It’s so brutal… I was on my PPI for years. My doctor told me to be on them for life. It’s unreal. Now, 3 weeks off I am suffering through this rebound, praying my reflux will stabilize over time. Tread lightly with the PPIs you guys.

    One things that I dont agree with is saying "once you know what to do its easy". Eating a restrictive diet is certainly not easy for everyone and can have other side effects that make you feel worse than just having reflux. I have tried all natural remedies for GERD and they generally always seem to make it worse. Giving up coffee and eating a low carb diet leads to a complete halt of all bowel motility for me and makes me feel lethargic and depressed. HCL and other things to increase stomach acid also seems to make my GERD and stomach pain worse (most any supplements do). Stress over restrictive dieting is actually also a huge trigger for my reflux as I feel tense and guilty that I cant control myself or do things right. These are just some thoughts on saying "treating this condition is easy". This can be a very emotional condition as food is not simply sustenance to all people but something to be shared and enjoyed-- not an easy thing to do when living with GERD and other digestive issues.

      They already know. Doctors only want to treat your symptoms, not your underlying condition or disease. THIS is how they make money. What most ppl don’t know is that there are legal drug dealers who show up at doctors offices to sell them on new medications. They ask the doctor to prescribe their patients THEIR meds instead of a competitors drugs, and when they prescribe a certain amount, they give the doctors a car, or free all expense paid trips for whole family to Europe, or many other expensive “gifts”. and all the Dr has to do is push these certain pills on the patients. Instead of the doctor actually looking to se what is causing the problem, it’s just easier to give them a pill for this and a pill for that. My stepfather was on over a dozen prescription pills. He just died at 67 yrs old.

    Im from zimbabwe and have had heartburn for 7 years . Im 35 now . Iv been on ppi's and still struggling . Iv lost weight and hardly eat anything . Iv got a polyp in my upper stomache . Iv asked my doctor to get it removed and he said its nothing to worry about . Iv told him about low acid affecting the LES function and he said its nonsense. Iv been to 7 doctors including specialists and they all perscribe ppi's . Im losing this battle . Im weak all the time . I get sick very often . Im sad that my kids always see me ill .

    I had reflux for years, and took all kinds of prescription and non-prescription meds to deal with it. A year ago I eliminated all sugars and grains and starchy vegetables from my diet, and the reflux stopped within days. Just stopped. My chronic post-nasal drip also stopped. I spoke to a Locum Dr (my own Dr had jumped ship as soon as Covid began!) and he advised me to take half the dose for 2 weeks, after that, apart from YT I was on my own. However, I think I’ve cracked it, unless I eat something my stomach doesn’t like, especially chocolate! My little great granddaughter was prematurely born and it is a miracle that she is alive. They have given her all kinds of medications and done all kinds of treatments for her to survive. She only weighed 1 lb14 oz. when she was born. She has really bad acid reflex and gas. They have her on all kinds of antacids. The doctor say that this is the only thing that will work. When they take her off of it, she cries with excruciating pain. She has a tube in her stomach so they can feed her. Is there anything natural that can be done for this sweet little baby?It breaks my heart to see her in such pain when she’s off of the medication.

I couldn't breathe, my esophagus and chest hurt constantly, I struggled to drink water for days. Not to mention I have GERD, and I am on prescribed omeprazole. Tried to stop it and I had severe bile vomiting for days. I think I might have bacteria growth from my medication. Getting tested soon hopefully. This has been terrible

      You need to know your triggers. Avoid sugar at all costs. It is the number 1 enemy. For a week, cook all your food in water only. In the morning get a bowl of oatmeal cooked in water. You can eat a banana as well with oatmeal. Do not drink and eat together. Keep 30 mins between eating and drinking. Yes, drink water only, no other drinks or beverages. Eat brown bread only. The food you can cook in water are carrots, beetroot, bottle gourd (if it's sour don't eat, should be sweet), pumpkin. The fruits you can have are bananas and papaya. I know it's looking tough to do but it will reduce all the inflammation caused by acid reflux within the body. Feel free to reply to my message.

You may also consider boiling some cumin seeds and have the water in the morning on empty stomach. The pain that you get from acid reflux is mostly from the inflammation caused by the problem. To heal yourself, you need to get rid of the inflammation. What are your symptoms if you don't mind me asking?

      @@abetterself4544 my symptoms are heartburn, nausea, vomiting sometimes, excessive phlegm coming up my throat, coughing, sour taste in mouth and lack of appetite. I have followed the diet you mentioned in your post and my symptoms have reduced. The biggest secret has actually been not eating 3 to 4 hours before bed. That has made a huge difference. But the psychological impact has been the worst. My quality of life has really gone down.

    • @abetterself4544
      @abetterself4544 2 роки тому +1

      @@Sofia-dl9vw I know it's hard, but you need to focus on getting better. You should train your mind to think that you are just fine. And also while you cook, put some positive thoughts in the cooking process. Say that the food you are cooking is like medicine. It will cure you. While you eat, you should love what you are eating. The food will make you lose some weight. But on a positive note, your inflammation will reduce considerably. Once the inflammation goes, the pain will go as well. Have you been practicing the mudra I mentioned? Also, eat slowly. Do not drink 30 mins before and after meals.

They already had to change the PPI because of it and I think they monitor my thyroid to for good measure. I feel like an experiment. A few years ago, after a iridology reading, a lady at a natural health product store saw my stroke damage-but she got what I needed to get well again after months of tests and no definitive conclusion. I had lost 40 pounds and could not digest anything without diarrhea or vomiting for about 6 months right after eating. The bone diagnosis came after this. Now I'm in PT trying to get my back straightened out again. I just want as normal a life as I can. I am going to try better with the food's thing, coffee, tea and chocolate, that will be a hard one to conquer-but if I can eliminate a medication, the better for it.

Like I used to hide sweets and gorge on a whole bag of dried mangoes. I said I just wouldn’t eat cake and I wouldn’t partake in mangoes because I can’t control myself. She told me that’s ‘dieting’ and that’s bad. I’m sure intuitive eating works for some people but not people who are coming from a place of addiction. I was disappointed that even after I expressed I didn’t like the idea she still pushed it. Guess Kaiser only has one solution for the majority.
