  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD or acid reflux, is a chronic condition in which stomach contents rise and enter the esophagus. This occurs due to problems with closure of the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which is the junction between the stomach and esophagus. The most common symptoms are a burning sensation in the chest called heartburn, regurgitation, and an acidic taste in the back of the mouth. Heartburn typically occurs after eating and may worsen at night. Less commonly, people may experience dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing. Dysphagia can manifest as pain when swallowing, a sore throat, choking, coughing, gurgling or regurgitating food or stomach acids, feeling that food is stuck behind your breastbone, a burning sensation behind your breastbone, and hoarseness. There may also be nausea, frequent burping, chest pain, the sensation of a lump in your throat, wearing away of teeth, and bad breath. GERD can cause a recurrent cough, breathing difficulties, chest congestion, and lung inflammation leading to asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
    Complications that can occur from it include esophagitis, or inflammation of esophagus, esophageal stricture, in which scar tissue develops and narrows the esophagus, and Barrett’s esophagus, in which the lining of the esophagus comes to resemble tissue that lines the intestines - which can lead to cancer.
    Risk factors for GERD include obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medications. Hence, treatments include lifestyle changes such as losing weight and quitting smoking. Other lifestyle changes include eating several small meals a day instead of 3 big meals, avoiding food resulting in symptoms, not lying down 2-3 hours after eating, and raising the head of the bed. Foods that can exacerbate GERD symptoms include spicy, fatty, or fried foods, garlic, onions, citrus fruits, tomatoes, caffeine, and fizzy drinks.
    There are also medications that can be used to treat GERD symptoms. These include proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, and histamine-2 (or H2) receptor blockers, both of which reduce stomach acid production. There are also prokinetics, which cause the stomach to empty more quickly, antacids, which neutralize acid in the stomach, and medications that strengthen the LES.
    Some people still have symptoms interfering with their quality of life despite lifestyle changes and taking medication. Still others wish to avoid taking medication long-term. In such cases, surgeries can be performed to reinforce and strengthen the LES. The most common of these is Nissan fundoplication. In this surgery, the stomach’s fundus is wrapped around the LES. During a total fundoplication, the fundus is wrapped 360 degrees around. In a partial fundoplication, the fundus is not wrapped completely around the stomach. Some people with GERD may have a hiatal hernia, which is when part of the stomach slips through the diaphragm into the middle compartment of the chest. If a hiatal hernia is present, that is also fixed during the surgery.
    Asthma and GERD frequently occur together. The reason is not certain, but it is believed that acid flowing from the stomach injures the throat lining, airways, and lungs. Another potential cause could be that when acid enters the esophagus, a nerve reflex kicks in and constricts airways to keep acid out. This can result in shortness of breath.

    It's been a long time since I posted a video... that's because a few weeks ago I developed severe symptoms of GERD. I went to the ER 4 times because of it. I was having a lot of difficulty breathing and chest pain after eating, drinking, and lying down. At first, I thought I had COVID, but got 2 negative test results. Once the doctors figured out what was going on, I got medication and needed to make lifestyle changes. I felt much better right away! I'm still continue to recover, but in the midst of everything, I did an enormous amount of research into GERD, so I thought why not make a video about it? - Viola

    - WEARING LOOSER PANTS (big one, tight waistbands pushed that shit right up into my mouth)
    - Cutting dairy for the most part (I also cut meats, both can cause inflammation)
    -Regular sleep schedule!! (It reliably flares up when I pull all nighters)
    - Eating smaller meals and avoiding spicy foods
    It was the worst when I was eating a lot of ice cream, staying up all night every other night, and then running with tight pants on.

    At 35 years of age I seemed to have suddenly developed this issue. It has been about a year since the initial onset of symptoms and 4 months since I was first diagnosed. My physician has exclusively prescribed me with Omeprazole and has insisted on just leaving it at that. My symptoms have not improved one iota.
    I am now considering making these radical diet changes but, I was raised eating mostly cajun/creole food, I spent a few years living in a Mexican community and came to love the cuisine alongside learning a fair bit of home cookery and I currently live in South Korea. Essentially, every part of my own personal culinary history is chock full of spiciness, acid, fats, onions and garlic. Also, I've been drinking coffee since I was a kid, it always kinda helped me with my ADHD. Finally, I was poor growing up and actually got quite used to going to the cheapest buffet in town (long since closed down) for dinner and just gorging myself on that one meal a day like the rest of my family. The one big meal habit always stuck with me, essentially fasting between dinners. It's worked for me health wise well enough, I'm not overweight and I'm fairly active.

    From this video I hav learned about association of asthma with GERD . Thanks .
    I wish this video was also talking about foods that help the digestion to naturally product HCL .
    Our stomach needs to be acidic in order for the food to be broken down . If the food isn't broken down the nutrients are not absorbed and the bacteria in the stomach travels to the small intestine causing SIBO . This can cause B12 deficiency and anemia.
    ACV, lemon juices, cabbage juice , sulphuric vegetables are helping with GERD.
    PPI are addictive, once you start on them for extended period of time it's hard to come off them . This causes many serious side effects.
    Vegetable and seed oils are pro inflammatory, wheat and corn are literally a poison to the gut . Sugar of all sources is worse than cocaine.

  • @tjgrafiks

    Sooo from everything else I’ve read and learned about gerd is that is actually a result of LOW stomach acid. Bcuz it is low the sphincter doesn’t close instinctively allowing some acid to come back up. It apparently instinctively closes when the body/stomach is producing enough acid

    • @NigelTolley
      @NigelTolley 2 роки тому +3

      That makes no sense. It happens after eating when your stomach is full of acid and food. The flap should stop *both* coming back up.

    • @tjgrafiks
      @tjgrafiks 2 роки тому +1

      @@NigelTolley makes perfect sense because that would explain why foods aren’t digested properly when they come out the other end. if there was enough acid then you would have proper enzymes released by gallbladder and pancreas and food would be digested and absorbed correctly . thats y the acv solution works. it helps the stomach produce more acid which allows the food to be broken down better and doesn’t just sit in the stomach.

Weak acid allows food to ferment in the stomach and doesn't stimulate bile to be released from the gall bladder and saponify fats. Sorry you have this :-( Based on my experience and my own research (I’m not a doctor), PPIs can be problematic. They are necessary to use at first to let the esophagus heal, but they are often prescribed for too long at too high a dose. PPIs should be taken for the shortest time possible and it’s important to ease off of them to minimize rebound reflux. Also look into something called rumination since you are vomiting. It’s often confused for GERD. And yeah, PPIs didn’t help me either except I needed them at first for my esophagus to recover.

I also slept on a high incline on my back. Acid reflux meds are important for letting your esophagus heal, but from everything I've read, you should stay on them for the shortest time/lowest dose possible to manage symptoms, and wean yourself off slowly because there's a rebound acid effect. Also, not to scare you, because this is rare, but my GI thinks the PPIs I was on lead me to develop microscopic colitis, which really sucks. It's in remission right now, but it's not a fun thing to have and it's not curable. The PPIs also gave me a lot of side effects that waned the longer I used them.
      Also, the breathlessness is definitely the scariest part :-( Hang in there - it can get better.
      Also, another thing that helped me (I had a hiatal hernia) was a chiropractic maneuver (I got my husband to do it on me) where you pull your stomach down (you can look this up on UA-cam). Other tips: small, frequent meals. Wait 30 mins after eating to drink, drink up to 5 mins before eating. Don't drink through straws or gulp drinks. Avoid fizzy drinks.
      And, if you have constipation - that makes GERD/regurgitation worse because it presses up on the stomach. Diaphragmatic breathing, poop massages, and stool softeners like milk of magnesia or miralax help.
      Lastly, ask a doctor if you have rumination syndrome.
      Hope that helps!
      Viola

That did nothing for me after being on it for 1 week. GP then prescribed pantoprazole 40mg which has worked better but i still get the heartburn, chest tightness and throat burn at night. I'm hoping to take pantoprazole for short duration to give throat some time to heal (2 week have been on it now) and see a specialist soon. I don't belch a lot, just a few times a day; but the coughing attacks worry me as it brings up stomach acid in to throat and i do worry about possible damage to lungs? Exercise is not possible atm but all the stress and only eating a couple of times a day has led to weight loss of 13kg in one month! I would like to find a natural way to manage/cure this rather than medicate for years on end and suffer the side effects.

      So sorry your wife has this :-( Unfortunately, it's kind of individual, but you can see in the video foods to avoid. As important as what you eat is how much/how you eat. I had to eat small frequent meals, and was told by my doctors to not drink 5 mins before a meal or 30 mins after. And don't lie down 2-3 hours after a meal. Oatmeal is pretty good. Plain chicken breast (less fatty than thighs) was good. Bananas, plain low-fat yogurt. Bone broth is SUPER helpful. I also tried high quality manuka honey (most manuka is fake, so look for a good brand). Also, try to drink a lot of liquids (water, tea - though avoid mint and caffeine) and get enough fiber because constipation makes GERD much worse. Best of luck! Hope your wife recovers soon! There are also lots of useful Facebook groups where people share tips that helped them.
