  • A chat and review of the good and bad points of the Atomos Shogun Inferno external recorder after 3 months of use.
    This discussion goes into some of the minor concerns I have about the Shogun Inferno as well as highlighting some of features that stand out to me as a fairly casual and enthusiast user after 3 months. This is not a detailed look at how to use the product.
    Without doubt one of the key features of the Shogun Inferno is the fact that it can record 4K 60p in 10-bit 4:2:2 ProRes. This is a big deal because this is a feature excluded from all but the most expensive cameras (e.g. C700 at $30K+).
    Do you use an external recorder from another brand? What are the features that you like about it?

      A simple question. It records 120fps burst RAW to CDNG or to 10bit Prores? The problem with Atomos is not actually record CDNG files. They should say: read signal 12bit RAW at 120fps but records at 10bit Prores. As a consumer I don't care if the recorder can read RAW 16bit @ 240fps or whatever, I need to know the output the recorder give me to use. And 10bit Prores is Wwwaaaayyyy low quality them 12bit CDNG RAW files. So the question is simple. Can Shogun Inferno output the RAW camera files as CDNG from the burst 120fps?

    Thanks for that review mate. How do you judge the audio noise of the fan. Mine starts of quite normal but brings up the loudness of the audio to a very loud level after around 8 minutes of recording. It is so loud that if you use the atomos for interview or quieter scene you will always record that audio noise which sucks. Did you experience the same?

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 років тому +1

      It is pretty loud but most of the recording I've done has been with a lav mic which has been far enough away to not make this a problem. If there was any non-shotgun and non-close proximity mic work then yes, I would think this could be a problem.

    TD - best to use power off your main battery - connecting to the mains input - Atomos supplies us with the mains cable -> vlock/gold battery | get a cage for the inferno which adds mounting points - also protects the HDMI cable input | the HDR function is superb | Aspect guides incredibly useful | Custom looks

    I know this video is a year old, but you can use a monitor cage that has an HDMI port lock and adds further protection and mounts via standard NATO rails or 1/4-20 and 3/8 mounts..

    interesting review thanks for making it. also was the stadium shot with the girls running the stairs in santa barbara, ca? I've shot video there and it looked familiar.

    Hi,
    Does the unit make audible noise? I would use it in combination with a shotgun mic. Thank you for your impressions. These 3 months after reviews are mostly the best.

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  6 років тому +1

      Yes. The small fan can be quite loud when used in an otherwise very quiet environment. You shouldn't have any problems with a shotgun mic though, especially if it is near your talent and not your camera.

    Whats your opinion on using the GH5 with the Shogun Atomos Inferno? That 4K60p Pro-res 4:2:2 is just so tempting.. Is the Inferno worth that amount of money? And does this set-up have a nice workflow instead of just getting the H264 straight from the camera? love the channel

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 років тому +1

      Thanks Roel. Until cameras all record in a decent codec, external recorders will always have one major plus. 4K60p ProRes is very nice because H.264 and H.265 are just dreadful to work with (particularly at 4K).
      However, there are a few caveats. I don't believe the GH5 will output 10-bit 4:2:2 via HDMI at 4K60p. Also, the data sizes are just massive at this resolution and framerate (for me at least). A computer can handle them fine but the sheer file sizes are huge. You're talking about 1500-1700mbps (200MB/sec+) and this can be limiting. That's a gigabyte in 5 seconds!! Bloody mad!!
      Workflow is so clean and reliable and fast. Having everything on an SSD ready to edit is wonderful. Having a decent screen is wonderful too. What you lose is portability and ease of use.

      @tdcattech  7 років тому

      Ah, I stand corrected on the 4K 60p HDMI output. Very nice. I currently tend to shoot everything in 4K 25fps and deliver in FHD. It would be lovely to be able to keep the overcranking possibilities using the full 10-bit colour.

    Smaller tripod screw size is 1/4"-20 and the larger size is 3/8"-16. I find most mounting options use the smaller size. To more securely mount the Inferno, a cage would be the best option. But that will add more weight, size, and money.

    hello, does anyone know that inferno would help the bad noise issues on fs700 in any modes? thanks

      Rastinfilm Hi, what noise issues are you facing? Are you using lots of gain?

      Light the scene! Don't under expose the image

  • @NakeanWickliff

    I prefer to mount these monitors to a tripod leg with magic arm so I can punch in and check focus, move around the frame, check exposure etc without disrupting the camera.

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 років тому

      That's a good idea. It would definitely help stability for me to get the camera separate from the monitor.

    • @redtvproductions1
      @redtvproductions1 7 років тому

      Yes, good idea but I need it to mount on my Ronin so it has to move. Wherever the Ronin goes, it has to follow.

    How about the Canon 5D Mark III? It doesn't support it?

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 років тому +1

      That's a very good question. I simply cannot get my 5DIII to work with the Shogun Inferno. At this time, I think my 5D is faulty (it has been in for repair before). I see no reason at all why it shouldn't work but the screen on the 5D turns off the moment I connect it via HDMI and nothing is outputted to the Inferno.
      I'd love to hear from anyone else on this.

      Have you solved the 5DIII problem? I just bought Ninja Inferno and i've exactly the same issue with it.

    4:03 you can see a crack in the plastic from the screw probably being over tightened from the factory... A bit scary for $2,000

    • @tdcattech
      @tdcattech  7 років тому +1

      Yes. I spotted this when I took the stock photography for the video. This isn't a fundamental crack in the housing thankfully. I may have done this when trying out various ways to mount the inferno on my camera for maximum stability but, either way, not great!

      I wanted to get the GH5 with audio recorder to pair a Rode NTG-3.
      But I realised that the inferno is 1/3 the price of the audio recorder and also has mic inputs. Better to save and maybe buy an inferno later.
      So I will sell my NTG-3 and get a "cheap" rode video mic pro + for now....
      ....
      Fuck me.
