- One of the best investments I've made in the past year for my production setup has been the Atomos Ninja Inferno. This video field recorder can capture up to 4K 60FPS in ProRes 422, nearly lossless quality. This has been IMMENSELY important in my production workflow's evolution and for building my tutorial courses.

I have no idea what you are doing "wrong" to not have more viewership. Your entire setup, presentation, and content is as professional as any successful techtuber, but you sit down here at 127k subs, averaging a few thousand views per video??? Epos, you deserve so much more. Really, I mean it.
Great in depth review. I just got my Ninja Inferno from atomos Germany which they repaired as my unit had overheating & noise issues. They replaced the back shell, and adjusted the Gamma and ran a few stress tests!
Aw, man, this is one of my favorite videos I've seen in a really long time. Good job! :)
Thanks!
Excellent review my friend.
About the audio portion of the review. Have you considered software such as pluraleyes to sync audio and video?
I had my Samsung Pro 850 1Tb drive drop frames once and thus ended up with two recordings with a small, less than half second gap in my footage. I was recording DNxHD HQX 4K UHD 10 bit at 59.94fps at the time. Only one small frame drop and was recording a concert continuously over a 1 hour and 4 minute long period. Camera was GH5 to atomos ninja inferno. No other frame drops ever and I am shooting mostly per above profile.
thank you! was waiting for the audio section. I think the 5" would be good, and I should use audio recorder instead since it doesn't sync automatically
You can go into the audio options on the Inferno and turn of which tracks are being recorded. This will allow you to only select the two channels you want and you won't have all of those blank garbage tracks.
I want one of those too!
Hey! I just bought the Ninja Inferno and bought the Sony AtomX but I think I am going to return it and buy a couple Samsung 860 PRO. QUESTION: did you ever try the Samsung 850/860 EVO?? Thanks for such a great and informative review!
the problem im having is that when I record video games from the HDMI cable on the inferno, the stereo audio file sounds mono for some reason...not wide and lush and stereo like the original source does.....why are my stereo files sounding mono? it shows 2 channels are being recorded to it shouldn't sound like mono...im recording into channels 1/2 on the far left
welp i'm going down this rabbit hole... not even done with vid, but already loving the idea of breaking away from being chained to OBS for "everything". Now learning the benefits of this route vs recording directly into cameras SD card or OBS/PC.. thx for the response on the other post. I'm hoping my new Sony A7C which is 422 8bit to output 10bit using this?! (looked it up, sadly it doesn't).
Looks like the A7c is limited to 8-bit output :( it’s what I use at desk too
For video recording you should only use MLC SSDs like such Samsung PROs. With TLC SSDs write speeds will drop significantly after you run out of write buffer, as you figured out.
Can 60p slow motion be viewed in playback in it’s true slow motion?
Which Codec is better for editing on Premiere Pro on the timeline, ProRes or DNxHR?
Generally they both perform about the same, in my experience. I did some deeper testing and on my older rig (6900K + 1080) DNxHR performed a tiny bit faster during exports, but timeline performance was virtually the same, and even the export time was virtually the same and dependent on your export codec.
EposVox thanks for the reply dude👏🏿
Thanks for watching!
Bro question, why every-time i used the inferno on my camera(sony a7iii). When i press record the footage i get from the ssd is by clip/s not the whole footage. Is there any specific setup before recording? I wanted to use more of this product on my projects but i am hesitant to buy it because of what happen to me during the shoot. btw i am only renting the inferno 😊but planning to get the ninja V
Sounds like the SSD you're using has its buffer fill and stops recording and you're not noticing or something. Not sure!
Hi there great video. I'm really interested in your setup as I also own a Panasonic G7. Any chance of you doing a more in-depth video of your setup with the Ninja Inferno? Also I believe you stated that the G7 outputs 10bit video externally which is what I'm actually interested in. Thx for your hard work keep it up.
Just turn off HDMI overlays in the menu and that's all the setup you need :)
ok thank you for your time!
Devices are still being made that use Sony InfoLithium L? That same battery series came with my circa 1998 Hi-8 Sony HandyCam! I thought the L batteries were going out of production, I know they are a bit more expensive than the newer/smaller InfoLithium M series.
NPF Batteries are still very commonplace
Thanks for info on Panasonic LUMIX g7 4.2.2 10 bit HDMI out to ninja inferno. How many minutes we can record continues without issue(heat/shut down). 1 to 2hr interview?
as long as your batteries last
Interesting...Don't have a camera, but if I get one that can record 4k in 60fps, I'll check this out.
Hi,
I am shooting with a Panasonic GH5 camera and a X 2 Anamorphic projection lens.
When I shoot in 24p with the GH5 the Atomos Ninja Inferno allows me to de-squeeze image with 2 X 4:3 option.
But when I shoot in 4K 60p with the GH5 the Ninja Inferno does not have 2 X 4:3 option.
Selecting manual mode on my GH5 seems to allow correct de-squeeze aspect ratio for 4K 60p, but there is clearly light & image quality loss shooting in ‘M’ manual mode, as apposed to shooting in Movie mode on GH5, which has mode specific to shooting with an Anamorphic lens.
I have latest V8.5 firmware, so update didn’t solve this problem.
Any ideas why this is?
Man getting a decent 4k camera for outdoor recordings is still waaay outside of the regular Joe-Schmoe's price range! I'm buying the Lumix G7 and then came upon your videos. Going to be filming things outdoors and was looking for the best budget 4k camera. Looks like the G7 is still the best budget camera? Not sure with all the options like the Canon Rebel T7 packages on Amazon that come with 155mm zoom cameras and costs the same price as the G7 which doesnt come with any filter lenses, or 144mm zoom lenses.
I have one of these. I bought it to work with my G85 AND to do screen captures from my laptop. Unfortunately I can't get any audio from my laptop. It uses Intel HD 4000 graphics and outputs via HDMI but it seems the Inferno doesn't see the audio. Also tried on a Ninja 2, same result. It must not output PCM audio, cause that's what the specs say the recorders accept. Strange though. Fair warning to those looking into these as recorders.
Would you recommend this with the Canon 1DX Mark 2?
Same question for me, too...
Let me comment before watching. Can’t wait to get the Ninja V
Looks nice
got mine! Love it!
rarevfx Jealousssssss😰😰😰😰
Time to get the Ninja V!
lol
I recently purchased Ninja V for gaming capture using a iPhone Max XS. Signal kept dropping in and out. Trouble shot every way with no result. Not sure if the product you mention will have this issue with a iPhone. Please let me know. I sent back the product for a refund. I really wish it worked.
I don't think DNxHD is supported for this recorder. Only Pro Res. The inferno is not listed on the Atomos site and the new recorder ID was rejected by Atomos.
you uploaded the wrong subtitles file, the video has the subtitles from the 5 reasons vid you did last week
WTF fixing now
fixed
