Should you buy one and is it worth it?
I purchased my own Atomos Shogun Inferno almost exclusively for the HDR functionality. Obviously my recordings will also be of a higher caliber as well.
If you shoot static footage (interviews, slow moving shots etc) and don't shoot a lot of 60fps, this unit won't give you $1300 worth of quality increases. If you also don't shoot in LOG you'll be missing out of a lot of this devices features.
Finally, if you want a smoother workflow, ProRes makes things so much easier from an editing standpoint especially if you use Adobe Premiere. - Фільми й анімація
Thanks for this review. You discussed the HDR features/ functions that I was curious about in far more useful detail than many other reviews!
Thank you caleb. Really find this useful and explaining a lot of things in the shogun inferno which I don't find anywhere else.
Another awesome information packed video. I've been watching your content for years and you always deliver the best information. thanks
Thanks for this! Got a used version of this media recorder as a full kit, for way cheap! Thank you for letting more about it.
Wow thank you so much for this review and taking your time to thoroughly explain the settings. I have this set up with the Blackmagic micro cinema camera and your video really helped me out big time!!
Yes! We talked about this in the comments of your monitors comparison video. Thanks for this review!
Thank you for watching David!
And thank you for replying Caleb! I never bought the Video Assist 4K by the way. I already have access to a BM URSA so why would I? Instead I purchased the Panasonic G85 for personal use and vlogs. What an amazing camera for the price! So much more usable than my Sony A7s. I only grab the A7s if I know I have to be shooting in low light.
Great review mate. I would love to see some more info on the HDR and timelapse capabilities once you get yours!
impresive review, plenty of details, amazing explanation.
Solid review. Eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Ninja Inferno :)
Nice dude! Solid device.
(monitor noob question) What is the technical difference between looking at log footage in ATOM HDR and looking at it using a custom LUT viewing option? Especially if the ATOM HDR is not baking in the slider settings? A SmallHD Focus can accomplish this for more than half the cost...
I want to learn more about using this with HDR. Did you ever make the video Caleb?
so does this mean log = HDR? and AtomHDR just regulates the exposure to get a Rec 709 image?
Very in-depth review!!
So ninja inferno can only use the default grading option? because it can't save raw
Great review - thanks! At 12:30, did you mean GH5 records 10 bit 4:2:2 internally?
Thank you very much for this very professional and interesting video
I'd be very interested to see an update of this review to cover GH5 HLG workflow.
Thank you for this well done video .... How is the battery life ? What recording time can you get out of one battery ??
Really enjoyed your honesty and I'm getting it for my gh5 so.. *high five*
Great Review!! Is it recordable with 3G BNC Line?? or do I have to use 12G line??
Thanks for the overview! When shooting raw not prores, can it still do 4k 60p?
hey, Great review. My quetsches are how got is the XLR audio sound is the Shogun Inferno an alternative to the zoom H6?
sorry for my bad Englisch I am German.
Just saw your FB post. Eagerly watching this right meow. Thanks
Thanks Ry!
Great review! I like how you start and maintain the question about the value. As a Sony FS700 owner, one of the key benefits of this will be the ability to record high frame rate (240 fps continuous) direct to this instead of internal memory cards (8 second burst). Oh and the small point about being able to record 4K from the camera which already has the 4K sensor, but whose internal recording is limited to HD. The additional resolution and flexibility is definitely worth it in my book, despite costing as much as my camera was on the used market.
Something I love about Atomos products is how they breathe new life into old technology, including Sony Z7 and V1s that are old HDV tape based cameras.
Love your stuff. 2 reasons I have this with my GH5, need/want pro res files over h.264 and timecode input on the back
Doesn't it's ability to record in ProRes speed up the workflow in post?
Yo, Caleb! I just got a MixPre-3 and also use the Ninja Inferno. Are you getting the Inferno to send timecode to the MixPre-3? What's your workflow?
I was excited about this before it came out, but when my friend got one and I felt how heavy and hot it got, I decided to hold off. I wanted to throw the original 2,000.00 price at it too! I'm hoping they make it lighter in the next iteration. In the mean time, I think the SmalHD Focus might be more fun to use. There's just not enough of a image quality bump for a big clunky recorder, so I think a little monitor like the Focus will give me more bang for my buck. Thanks for the review Caleb! It's still fun to learn more about this.
Have you done a review on the SmallHD 702 OLED?
I know you posted this video a while ago, but hoping you could answer a question. I just purchased the Ninja Inferno for my GH5. Love it so far. I wanted to know if there is a way to have the GH5 info DISPLAY on the the Inferno, but not record as part of the footage?
Hi, Caleb. I hope you are doing well mate. I wanted to ask if you could show us how you achieve your backgrounds in your video if you could please show us the lighting setup. Because I've been using Philips hue bulbs with two lamps to create the background and then I use a hair light to isolate myself from the background. however, it isn't working well due to light spill from key light.
thank you, would really appreciate a response.
-Samar
I'm definitely a little skeptical about that crop issue. Still worth the price tag vs. a cheaper option with similar features?
If I pair G85 with ninja or shogun inferno, does it reaaally improve the footage quality? Or just go with GH5 internal recording?
Would it be good if you have a GH5 but also hire other cameras like the EVA-1 and FS5?
Hello. Thanks for all your videos. I’m using a Pentax K1 for still and video shooting (I know it’s far to be the best, but it’s my only option). I’ve got a question: will this monitor/rec help me to film more than 25minutes and get better visual results?
Thanks for your time.
Simon.
Thanks for a nice review Caleb. I initially bought this recorder from B&H with power pack and a 2TB SSD, after I was told by the sales person that I could record 4k 60 fps to this recorder, using my Canon 1Dx mark ii. Long story short, he was dead wrong, and as I found out, my camera doesn't even output ANY 4k signal, so I am hoping you would be able to help me answer a single question (since I am a brand new kid on the block when it comes to external monitors/recorders).
Since I am shooting my videos with Canon 1Dx mark ii, and I like my footage in 4k 60 fps, and since I can't externally record 4k 60 fps using this camera, the next best thing is to make the internal recording with 4k 60 fps, and here is my question...
If I am recording internally 4k 60 fps on my 1Dx ii, do I need a monitor that's capable of displaying 4k 60 fps?
In other words, if I purchase a monitor that (for example) is only capable of displaying 4k 30 fps, (or even is only capable of displaying 1080 60 fps), would I still be able to make the internal 4k 60 fps recording, while monitoring the recording in progress on an external monitor for focus, and overall image analysis? Thank you.
Really good video, thanks
Hello, thank you for this video Caleb ! I feel you didn't talk very much about sound with this device and nobody on youtube really talk about putting XLR and using it to record sound. Is it really bad or not convenient ? Thanks
Which camera do you recommend for beginner tech channels such as mine?
Thinking about buying this for my Sony, how long does the batteries last on the Inferno?
Hey Caleb,
Can we do a focus zoom while recording on the Inferno?
GH5 doesn't allow any manual focus assist during internal recording and I'm not comfortable relying on focus peaking alone.
Klass!!!Very impressive!!!!Thank you
Hey Caleb, Quick question: I'm going to purchase my first external monitor/recorder primarily for framing and colour (waveforms/false-colour) soon. I'm going to choose between a used Atomos Ninja Assasin or SmallHD Focus for my X-T2. My question is would the Atomos suffice also as a primary field monitor for colour and framing. I know the SmallHD is optimal for this, but the Atomos would let me record 10 bit 4:2:2 log which the X-T2 can't do internally. Given the relatively small difference in price ($250CAD) I'm leaning towards the Atomos, but what would you choose? Another point too being when I move to 4k60p the Ninja Asassin is already outdated, so framing/colour would be it's primary role.
Are you grading and finishing in DAVINCI RESOLVE and getting the meta data in order for UA-cam to recognize HDR content? The post production and how to deliver all of this V-log 10 bit 60fps footage is where I am looking for a lot of direction on. I know your a fcpx guy as myself which I think would require round tripping or just editing and finishing in resolve?
Hey, I really like your videos and I'm learning a lot from them, thanks for that.
I am starting to make cooking videos (like Tasty videos) in my small kitchen and I need some advice on lighting and camera. At the moment I'm using Samsung S6 camera (1080p 30fps, can also do 4K) which is very basic so I need a decent FHD camera and 2 or 3 LED panel for continuous lighting, I'm on a low budget, please can you make any recommendations?
Im just getting into video and someone has one of these brand new for a bargain price of $500, should I jump on it?
Any chance you remember how you lit this review video? I'll be helping a company out who sells in dash navigation units and they want to do walk throughs with a setup like this. Looks like top lit on the screen and then just some color wash on the paper background? Their screens are over 1000 nits but glossy...
I've been watcing your videos for over a year, but i wasn't subscribed ??!!! hahahaha .>>>>> your video is just AWESOME !
informative & on point.
Thanks Big Z! Glad to have you aboard!
Anyone have any experience of this with the a7rii? Can you get 4k 60 fps on it?
Does the SDI multilink allow you to view multiple cameras on the monitor if they are plugged in through the SDI ports?
Can you power the monitor with a V Mount battery?
Hi will this work good with the lumix g7?
Please Do a Hands on and Review of The fujifilm xa3 I loved your videos btw😍😍😍
I have a Sony A7iii and shoot S-Log2. Should I get the Ninja instead of this one?
Great video and very informative on all the functions. I've been using the shogun inferno with my A6500 for a couple of weeks and it makes my workflow so much easier having prores files directly on an SSD for import into FCP. Although I could have gotten the ninja inferno, I figured for $300 more, why not have the extra capabilities if and when I upgrade my camera.
We've bought the Inferno for the Sony A7sII for the same reason! (sadly before the huge Pricedrop by Atomos 🙂🔫) The Ninja Flame or the Blackmagic Video Assist 4k would be totally fine, but someday we want to upgrade to the Sony fs5 with the RAW option enabled (together with the Shogun it is a RAW beast!). And you can use the SDI-Ports with broadcast equipment!
Wait what, you cannot monitor the full image when shooting 4k DCI? Did they fix this in the meantime?
Any timecode solution other than hdmi feed?
Perhaps, bnc feed?
What SSD's do you use? I currently have the Master Caddy 4K (512GB) but at 422 HQ, I'm only getting ~30 min worth of record time. Not really wanting to drop $250 on another 512gb card. Looking at the Atomos website, I see a few that I could use that are decently price... just kind of curious as to what you use. Thanks
How loud does it really get? For narrative film, would an audio op get frustrated with fan noise in a dialogue scene?
Nice review Caleb! Looks like a nice box. I'm pretty interested in checking out the new AJA Ki Pro® Ultra Plus
Multi-Channel HD Recorder with 4K/UltraHD/2K/HD Recorder and Player. If you get your hands on this box it would make a great video. I know price wise there is a huge difference but it is intended to capture balanced audio and all of the video features on one box. Cheers man!
guys i tried today atomos and my video was recorded with settings from a touchscreen display from a camera, what was wrong?
thanks for a tip
Which recorder do you prefer? The ninja v or the inferno and why? I like the inferno better.
Is this worth pairing with the Sony FS5 M2
8 months after using the Inferno how do you feel? well worth it? I just bought one..
what is the GH5 outputting via the HDMI? is it limited or full rage? this could be way the atomos is looking darker.
Hey man, if I only understand half of this, what is a good place to learn about all of it?
Hi Caleb, not sure if someone's commented on the issue of why the external recording of v-log is "darker" than the internal recording. It's most likely because the HDMI connection screws with the algorithm of the log-curve, this is a similar problem for recording s-logs pp and its sooo annoying. The only way to get "un-corrupted" log image externally is by using a SDI connection which ofcourse non of the photography cameras have (nor should they)
Not sure how updated this review is , but im looking @ getting either this " Shogun Inferno" or Sumo, this review says 1080p @ 240 fps is " SDI only, but B&H shows 1080p "HDMI" to be 240fps.. so which is correct?, Does Sumo capture 240fps over HDMI 1080p? Thanx.
I actually hava a a7sII and i'm kind looking for an external record/monitor. So, 2 questins for you guys. it is really impossible to record raw with th a7sII? It will be a good idea to get the ninja inferno? Btw, i'm looking to make some videoclip and small documentaries as a indie fillmmaker here in Brasil and want to upgrade the quality of my footages.
adamoovalhe the a7s ii cannot record or output raw. What you'll get from it is 8 bit 422 video files. If you want a Sony camera with raw, I'd recommend the fs5 with the Shogun Inferno with the raw upgrade. Boa sorte meu amigo!
sonya7iii already has a raw recrording?
Can I shoot ProRes RAW with a GH5?
That 'backup' file can save your ass!!! I have had my cf card fail, but luckily my Atomos continued to record :D
Exactly why this unit is important for shooting those critical gigs!
Can you shoot raw in the atmos with GH5?
may I get 12bits with this camera or even with a Panasonic EVA ?
How do you get footage off the ssd?
Question. I am using the Shogun with the GH5 and shooting in DNxHR codec. When i transcode the footage to DNx36 for editing purposes it works fine when it was recored with Shogun, but when i record straight on camera's card and then transcode to DNx36 somehow it's adding a frame. For example is the master clip is 00:09:00, the transcode clip will be 00:09:01. Does anyone know why this is happening?
Hi everyone. i starting to do more and more video since a while but i have to admit im a bit lost with all these 4K, Pro Res, and RAW ( well as a photographer since 20 years i know what RAW is......)
so whats the difference, can this monitor-recorder shoot Pro-Res, or RAW or both even if the camera plugged in it doesn't ????
what is the difference between the shogun and the ninja inferno?
What options does this recorder have when using with A6300 ? Great review !
You'll go from 8-bit, 4:2:0 high compression to 8-bit, 4:2:2 low compression. So less banding, tearing and other compression artifacts. Not to mention audio meters, exposure assists and a headphone jack!
The codec will be 10-bit, and you don't have to deal with the compression nonsense, but I don't believe the a6300 outputs 10bit video from the camera/sensor over HDMI. If my understanding is correct, the color sub-sampling is very close, but having the much more efficient codec makes it 'almost' true 4:2:2. I know I can pull a damn good chroma key using the HDMI output of my a6300 to a recorder in ProRes LT versus the interal XAVC recording, that's for sure. Def. worth it.
I am an A6300 user I think the Ninja Inferno option would be suited for the camera. It is tough to grade the 4:2:0 footage and also monitoring the audio would be much easier on than on camera. I use the Ninja 2 with the A6300 but only for 1080p 30fps and it improves the quality immensely. So I guess upgrading to the Inferno seems like a good investment.
Also, does the Inferno deliver a 10-Bit file even though a camera output is 8-Bit?
well, it only "upgrades" what your camera is capable of recording. i'm quite sure that the A6300 can't do 10-bit since the A7s2 can't.
Just get confused, the Fs7 with the extension unit doesn't do 240 fps with the Atomos, its does only with the Odessey 7q+ 240fps, may u clarify please?
It does 4k 120fps with fs5 raw dng file with brust mode
I live in Dubai and heat didn't make any issues with me
Hey, have you tested that external recorder with a lumix g85? I'm thinking about making the investment, but i can't find a person that have test this.
What size SSD, will is handle?
1tb. 2tb.3tb.4tb?
Rare on UA-cam: Smart & concise.
While you wait for that Inferno to come in, make sure you turn on the Vlog assist LUT on the GH5. There’s a built in LUT, and you can add your own. You can even output it to an HDMI display. And it’s all just for assist. None of it is baked in.
How's this work with the c100
Hey Caleb! I pared my gh5 to the atomos ninja inferno. Also bought a Sandisk ultra II 480 and a HDMI 2.0b. Unfortunately the monitor cannot rec. at the advertised 10bit-4K-60fps nor are there any options for 1080p slow mo (120-240fps). Their customer support offered very little to no help unfortunately, so I thought about asking you based on your experience. Also would it be possible to use a speedy nvme drive (through a SATA enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? thank you for reading this. Cheers!
Hey, this should help you with the 10bit-4K-60fps issue! ua-cam.com/video/ij2rRNOySfg/v-deo.html
Thank you for the help D. I eventually RMA'd the monitor back to the company and they told me that the problem was my HDMI cable. I didnt want to give 100euros for an atomos HDMI so i got a 17euro third party one. I also figured out that GH5 doesnt output VFR so thats a bummer too.
Yeah the price for the Atomos HDMI cables is insane. I'm currently searching for a cheaper one, but i can't find a short and flexible one... You're saying it doesn't output VFR via HDMI?
d chiller yes. The gh5 does not output any kind of slow motion/high fps other than 60. Actually the number 50 and 60 is not vfr. That is the typical output of pal and ntsc. Also please do a good research for a proper cable. I bought mine as it was adertized for hdmi 2.0 version b. It failed...
Thanks!!!
Thank you for watching Luke!
So it can actually convert hdmi to sdi and vice versa?
What about the battery life?
Why would you buy this vs smallhd focus in the review unless you need a recorder ? hope you can help.
[1:37] Since this recorder can record up to 240fps (1080), i wonder if i could record 240fps on it with my Sony rx10ii?
It's dependent on your camera. If your rx10ii is capable of outputting 240fps from its HDMI port, the answer is "yes". But without even looking I can tell you that the RX10ii doesn't have that capability. It also doesn't have the capability to output any form of RAW or 10-bit from the HDMI port either.
I played around with the Ninja Inferno. My main issues wih it was how damn glossy and reflective the screen is and that they no longer make a 5inch recorder... i find 7 inch monitor/recorders to be awkwardly big to use with such small cameras.
What's the difference between Shogun inferno vs ninja inferno ??
So I bought this recorder to allow me to shoot 4k at 60p however it seems with my Sony A7R III I can only shoot what my camera already allows me to shoot. Anyone know the fix for this? I can currently only shoot ProRes in 4k 30p or 1080p in 60p. I'm using an Atomos HDMI 2.0 cable as well so it shouldnt really be an issue.
You have completely forgotten to mention the huge benefits of having ProRes Files for Post production... It´s a pain in the ass with the Files coming from GH5 to make some editing in 4K on Premiere CC, but it´s soooo much easier and faster with ProRes Files instead... All calculations by Premiere are done much more fast and precise and if you have mixed up different kind of cameras, like Nikon and Panansonic, you will be happy having only 1 common format coming from the Atomos recorders... Not to talk about the recording duration, where you can put a 1 TB SSD into the Atomos, giving you so much more recording time than the SD Cards in the GH5... Or the overcome of the 30 min recording limit of some DSLRs...
Very true!
I think Caleb has gone into that subject a few times in older videos, especially when looking back at the GH4. Of course, FCPX can create Optimized Media (ProRes) on import, which Premiere can do as well if you set your Ingest/Proxies to do so. ProRes is just one flavor of Intraframe codec - you'd get the same result of speed and ease of use with DNxHD like this monitor, the Black Magic Video Assist 4k, and others, would provided. I think in the context of this review, spending a lot of time talking about the benefits of intraframe codecs might get lost among the recorders more unique features Caleb's highlighting. I think that mostly because as far as I know, the recorder doesn't do anything with its recording codecs that most recorders don't already do outside 4k 60fps. (ProRes is ProRes is ProRes, after all). Maybe a video solely on Intraframe workflows in different editors would be great, but I think Caleb is firmly in the FCPX camp. Totally with you on the advantage of the single format for editing, but since the 11.1.2 update to Premiere Pro, my GH5 10bit 4k files cut pretty decently without transcoding , though I still do it for the conformity and ease of applying effects (which is where my files slow down for sure). I'm not sure how others feel about it, but most DSLRs don't output clean or straight HD over HDMI, at least not older ones, but some cameras - mirrorless as well, don't output 10bit over HDMI, so I think you could get away with recording ProRes LT, or in some cases even ProRes Proxy, to save hard drive space. Do you use one of these units? How do you like it?
One thing I really like about my Infernos is that they record to ProRes and I have only 1 file to deal with. I do a lot of hour plus recording and dealing with multiple files generated by the mp4 codec can be tedious.
I hear ya Bob! Great for workflows like yours.
I was told by atomos it can do 12bit raw cdng depending on your camera output. So FS7, FS5, FS700, black magic, will all do 12 bit cdng raw files.
great video thanks also people should keep in mind that the next firmware update for the gh5 is supposed to have 10 bit for all frame rates at least that's what some of the GH5 sites that I've been doing research on say
Yup, so DSLR Video Shooter, How does the upcoming GH5 2.0 update change your recommendations on whether
the Atmos is a good purchase for GH5 owners?
The exposure difference is due to a 0-255 issue with standard monitors that follow typical broadcast standards. Monitors and recorders are designed for the typical 16-235 legal video range and flags 0-255 (0-1023 10bit) incorrectly so in the NLE external video looks more contrasty. The way around this with non v-log profiles is to use 16-235 legal video range. v-log doesn't really have an option to fix this since it is locked at 0-255. The Odyssey is the only monitor/recorder I know of that will currently take in a 0-255 data range video and record it correctly. Resolve has a setting for the media to force the use of the 0-255 data range. Other NLEs do not have such a feature and other methods have to be used to adjust the range of values.
I used this recently and I noticed that it recorded the focus zoom when I adjusted my focus mid shot. Any way to turn this off?
Yes. In your camera turn off any and all focus assist features. Anything that goes through the SDI/HDMI into the recorder is what will be recorded. So that's also why you turn off any and all icons and waveforms that come from your camera, otherwise those two would get baked into every shot you take.
If you need focus assist features in order to focus, then in the Atomos recorder you can turn those features on and not have this issue. That includes punch in and focus peaking. To punch in that does mean you'll have to touch your monitor, which may not be convenient mid shot. For running and gunning you'll have to rely on focus peaking. Obviously with a first AC they can figure out how to get focus themselves with the tools they have.
Hi! I want to ask if this recorder works with SONY A7 (1st Gen, NO S, NO R)?
If it does, what is the possible format? Can I record it at 4K?
My mate used Sumo recently with a A7.. Shogun can record at 4k 30fps.. dono if that helps!
It's great for something like my Sony FS700R as it enables it to record high quality 4K video. The SDI is nice if you have the connection on your camera as it's much more secure , but of course if you only have HDMI then it is a bit pointless to go for the top level Atomos.
