Hey, great review. Lots of great info. Just one clarification--Premiere Pro on Windows doesn't have any issues with the ProRes codec. The only issue you run into with ProRes on PC is that QuickTime is the only media player that will reliably play back the files. But as far as editing, coloring, etc., in the Adobe suite, you can safely work with ProRes no problem.
Phillip Peck I have found that dnxhr performs much better than prores on my system. Not saying you are wrong it’s just something I noticed playing back to back.

It might have been true in the past but Premiere and Resolve on Windows do just as well with ProRes as they do with DNx, at least on my machine.
Have you tried comparing Pro Res with DNxHR? From what I've read, HR HQX is 12 bit and HQ, SQ, and LB are 8 bit. The ProRes are all 10 bit. You can use ProRes on windows if you download quicktime from here (support.apple.com/kb/DL837?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US).
If I had an extra $1,000.00 I would buy in a second. 60fps is what I need for aviation/railroad video-photography and in 10 bit too.
Just curious, does the Nikon D500 hdmi deliver 60fps or only 30fps as recorded by the camera....I know the crop-factor but I tried of having 2 camera types and related lenses!
denault3985 it should do 1080 60fps but it’s limited to 30fps 4k. The gh5 is the only “dslr” style camera that can output 4k 60fps

Great review. I sub'd. I've been contemplating purchasing it. Question: Can you output your edited Prores footage back out to the device and then hook it up (via hdmi) to playback on a 4k hdr tv?

Awesome review, does it work with taping on record screen to focus the area you want? I mean just don't want to touch the camera at all especially when it's on gimple. thanks
Mate, fantastic video. Quick question, do have you used the tagging features. Set in and out points on the monitor and set selects and rejects. Does it work with premiere? On the website it only talks about Final cut. Cheers!

Hi,
I am shooting with a Panasonic GH5 camera and a X 2 Anamorphic projection lens.
When I shoot in 24p with the GH5 the Atomos Ninja Inferno allows me to de-squeeze image with 2 X 4:3 option.
But when I shoot in 4K 60p with the GH5 the Ninja Inferno does not have 2 X 4:3 option.
Selecting manual mode on my GH5 seems to allow correct de-squeeze aspect ratio for 4K 60p, but there is clearly light & image quality loss shooting in ‘M’ manual mode, as apposed to shooting in Movie mode on GH5, which has mode specific to shooting with an Anamorphic lens.
I have latest V8.5 firmware, so update didn’t solve this problem.
Any ideas why this is?

Wait, So i can record directly to the Inferno's SSD card and not worry about eating up the space on my sd card from my GH5?
HELP!! I have the GH5s and Ninja Inferno with sigma 18-35mm on DEC Lens Regain converter. Trying to do Prores 422 HQ 10 bit 4K 60p. But for some reason the footage keeps on looking grainy - even when there seems to be enough light! Is it my HDMI cable (I'm using the one that comes with atomos)? Or is it a common issue...? Also the Recording Quality setting in the GH5s is 4K 60p 150M 8bit 420 LongGOP. Some one help me figure out why I still see some grain especially in the shadows or mid gray sections...
Am I right in thinking that using this with the Canon 1DX Mark 2 in order to get improved footage, isn't a solution?
Stupid question maybe but wouldn't it be giving us the same results to load all these features into an iPad or tablet?
Great video, can you clarify, The ninja inferno allows you to shoot at 4K 24 p 10 bit but can it shoot 4K 60 p 10 bit? I didn't see that as an option under my recording quality formats. I see one option that is 3840x2160 59.94 p but only 8 bit and when I select this option my ninja inferno says no input. Would love some help! thank you

I just wonder which ssd(s) I should buy, you show a 850EVO - but on the Atomos page they only list the 850PRO ... which datarate does the ssd need to record HDxHR HQX 422 60p 10bit ?? Would a WD Blue PC SSD enough ??

Hey, ZED. Do you know an alternative to the horrible (and overpriced) LEMO audio cable that Atomos sells and you have to have to hook up an external mic to the Ninja Inferno? Every review you read about the cable says it only works part of the time and breaks very easily. I have never understood why companies use some obscure part like this lemo thing.
So, I have the Ninja Flame monitor and purchased a G-Tech/Atomos 256GB SSD, however I did not purchase a reader to get the footage from the media card onto my computer. Is there any other way for me to get the footage from off the ssd card without having a G-Technology reader??? Please advice! Thank you!

No it will record as long as the harddrive size or however long the battery lasts

I would recommend the atomos Ninja V instead because it’s smaller and newer. But if you want the bigger screen it’s a good option

Artay Abadi what camera are you using. Most have HDMI settings in the cameras menu to turn off “info” through HDMI

What iMac were you using? I have the iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) / 32 GB of Ram/ AMD Radeon R9 M390 2 GB / Fusion Drive.
Plan on routing to an external graphics card later on.
Just wanted to see if it will keep up without proxies.
Jimel Atkins I don’t own an iMac but I’m pretty sure it would be fine with most prores stuff. If you were shooting in 4K 10 bit it might be harder to get smooth play back. I edit with an 8 core PC and have a gtx 1080ti so it can handle pretty much anything.

Why wouldn't it? If your camera has a an HDMI out... www.atomos.com/cameras - It lists the 5D Mark III but why wouldn't it be compatible with the 5D Mark IV?
how bad does this heat up with use?
I'm shooting a project at the moment (90% outdoors; Alabama heat) and yes it does get pretty hot at the top where the exhaust is, but I've never seen it malfunction because of heat. Hope this helps.
its not 10 bit. A7sII doesn't put out 10bit signal.
Yeah I know. When did I say the a7sii was 10bit? I recorded 10bit out from the gh5.

Hey Lee! Do you know if i can use an nvme drive (through a sata enclosure, in the SSD caddy)? I have tried 2 SSDs so far but they cant reach the 10bit-4K-60fps that the monitor advertises. (Sandisk ULTRA II 480Gb, and a slower corsair). Their customer support offers very little to no help unfortunately. Also no 1080p 120fps or 240fps is available. Thoughts on that? Cheers!
How does your ninja show the 120frames? My GH5 is set to 120fps but it only shows 1080p59.97.
After talking with the Atomos staff i realized that GH5's VFR (variable frame rate) does not work with the atomos ninja inferno. The camera simply doesn't output more than 60fps. You could input 120fps from other sources (like a PC). Also your samsung EVO drive is not recommended by the atomos website for 4K 60. You should go with the Samsung PRO are other similary fast SSDs.
And do the batteries hot swappable?

Using the DNxHR Codec, does it import okay for Adobe Premiere CC for Windows? No you have to transcode the files? Make Proxies? What spec is your PC please?

I use G-Technology - Atomos Master Caddy 4K - 250GB. It's no problem. You can check on (for Ninja Inferno) www.atomos.com/drives
am i right that sony a7/a6*** series output 4.2.2 8(!!!)bit? But u record 10bit, does it normal record 10bit out of 8bit?
Егор Губарев Sony alpha cameras are only 8bit not 10bit. So it only records in 8bit with a less compressed higher bitrate codec to the ninja

Seems to me like you need some weight training if you complain about the weight. Its pathetic. Mine is fine on the Ronin and I dont know what you expect. I bought it for the monitor and its amazing. You say $1000 there but in Australia its $2500 with batteries and accessories including hard drive. $1000 is misleading. It doesn't even come with the audio breakout cable so i have to buy one of those.
