      Hello I bought a few starter for my 76 Thunderbird which has this type of set up. Have a no crank no start condition. The starter is new, the relay and battery new, and also changed ground connections. The new starter that I installed only have one big terminal so you saying there needs to be a second wire on the actual starter for it to work? I can't even pop start it by using the screw driver technique. The relay just clicks when turning key.

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  7 місяців тому

      @@omarchisolm7533 - your setup sounds correct. Some starters only have one large terminal. In your scenario - check to make sure your ground wires are connected securely. There is usually a ground that goes from the negative terminal on the battery to the body and to the engine block. If your engine block is not grounded, you will have your exact problem. Also use a test light or multimeter down at the starter and make sure that the power from the solenoid is going to the starter when the solenoid is activated.
      Good luck!

    With the basic knowledge in this video I built an independent starting system (so I could better kick the starter off a push button) with a covered arming switch and indicator light and an indicator light for when the starter fires. When I was in high school I dreamed of my 73 cobrajet having a starting sequence with lights and switches. You not only told me how to hook it up, but how it works and what each component does. It was easy to install and easier to expand on. I've been studying automotive electrical for over a year now and your videos are the most comprehensive and informative that I've found. I salute you for what you're doing for the culture. Think of all the ratty muscle cars you will keep from being junked because of your schooling. Keep em on the road, dirty side down!

    Every comment is just saying how great you are, and you do explain well.. HOWEVEr there is more to the subject... the FOrd remote relay diagram shows different wiring that you may also want to discuss. It switches main 12 V which is also wired direct to starter, to a wire that then runs down to the starter solenoid (i.e. small terminal) lower current (i.e. small lug) activator point... in this scheme 12 v is always at the starter, but not at the solenoid switch terminal.... I wondered what good these different wiring really do if the starter itself is hot and the solenoid is hot... seems it avoids the onboard-starter solenoid point... anyway, check out Ford (PMGR) starter relay diagram.

      Excellent! I’m thrilled that you’re finding them useful. I’d love to make more rusty car restoration videos right now, but my garage is ARCTIC! These circuit videos can easily be done inside my warm house until the garage returns to an above freezing temperature! :) thanks for watching and good luck on your project!

    I really find your videos helpful. I do have one question with regards to the Mega Fuse and ignition switch sizes. I have a 1922 Model T that I am rewiring. It has a 6V system and has a starter solenoid similar to the shown in the video. Mine is a three terminal solenoid and does not have the coil lug. What size fuse is used before the ignitilon switch? I know the current draw on this wire is much less that the starter cable as it only powers the solenoid coil. Also I like the idea of adding the Mega Fuse. What size fuse would that be? Thanks!

    Canada. 2008 Lancer 2.0L replaced a Starter, but still wouldn't start. So my genius mech noticed that the blue wire crimp connector was corroded, (Canadian weather), so he crimp a new wire from underneath the car (my guess it's the blue wire, starter relay section, on the solenoid Starter). And it started, finally. At 3:44 min. to understand better.

    I was wondering your thoughts on when doing a brand new car wiring if you'd recommend a main relay to run everything through? I've got an old car and don't want to put too much strain on my switch. The car has a 2 position ignition switch and then a pull start switch.

      This is a highly debated topic. Many cars do not have fuses in their main power wire to their starter. Though some do. I would recommend doing a little research on the fused power wire before committing to it. Some cars don’t want you to lose all power to the vehicle if the fuse pops. It’s weird and fascinating all at once. Worth researching!
      As far as fuse sizes, I made a video about that right here: ua-cam.com/video/EhzN6UdnmPA/v-deo.html hopefully it helps you out!
