So I bought these exact items, and wired it to the t how you explained however I still get 12 volts on my fuse panel with or without the master shut off or ignition switch on or off....any idea what I'm doing wrong? No alternator hooked up yet either
Absolutely the most straightforward explanation of basic automotive wiring. Many of us with classic old cars deal with deteriorating factory wiring that is decades old. Man i know this can be a daunting task at times but please please keep this stuff up. Ive learned so much from your videos. 13:54 Actually, the diode is there to protect all other electronic components of your car from that huge voltage spike that happens when the magnetic field collapses. The coil inside that solenoid is very sturdy and doesn't really care about voltage spikes of any kind.
Exactly, what probably happens without a diode is when you turn off the ignition switch there is an inductive kick which can cause a spark across the switch contacts, shortening it's life
FINALLY ! Someone who has actually used the PROPER method of installing a KILL switch ! It’s the same method I have always used to cut off EVERYTHING that could possibly continue to run a vehicle even AFTER a crash . I’ve seen shorts physically START a fuel pump or starter engage after a crash . Alternators continue running, power flows . It happens . I love your videos . Glad to see what seems to be younger generations commenting on your videos that they are following and hopefully using the proper methods themselves . PS. I have always added a ground to my alternator , even single wire alternators , to help cut out frequencies that cause issues with stereo systems and fuel injection ecm issues .

I have been trying to figure out my problem for weeks. 1962 Land Rover rebuild. Dynamo to Alternator conversion. Glass bulb in the dash for charge light. Diode fixed it. I have tried to understand this stuff for years and never seen anyone explain it down to my level any better than you. I have a 1936 Plymouth coupe and the wire harness was toast. I bought a standard 12 fuse wire harness that suppose to work for most cars but mine was born a 6 volt and the starter is foot pedal. This video gave me a jump start but I see it's going to be tough.
This is my new go-to channel for answering "I dont know you just have to" questions. Already seen a few things I knew you had to do because "they" say so. But had no idea what it does.
Man, this is an amazing video. I’m fairly mechanically inclined but the way you’ve worded this, on purpose or not, has made engine electrics that much clearer in my mind. Thank you for taking the time to produce such a great video. I’ll likely watch 6 or maybe 10 times.
This whole series is like gold to those of us who probably have no business messing around with automotive wiring. I recently stepped off into the deep end of the pool and bought a 1929 Mercedes Benz kit car used. Mechanically, it seems to be okay, but if I put a mental image of several 10 gauge wires simple stripped, twisted together and taped over with that cheap tape, then multiply that disaster waiting to happen by way too many, and you get an idea of what I'm dealing with. I've found about half of my problems went away as I re=connected the bad connections, and the other half are rapidly going away as I watch your vids and put them to work!. I have one suggestion: My workspace for this car is off to the side of my house, far from my computer. My eyes have a hard time making out fine detail on my cell phone. I've tried drawing my own schematics as you explain them, but they look like chicken scratching even to me! A wiring diagram from He-who-knows-how-it-works wold be a very welcome addition for many of us I'm sure, and if not then I'd appreciate it enough for all of them! Many thanks for all this information, I'll send you a picture when I've got ALL the lights lit up. Won't be long now!
This is what wiring companies should send as instruction manuals. I'm on my second full car rewire and this one really has me scratching my head. The instructions are terrible but your videos make it all so clear. Now i just need to identify what wires my painless kit is using. I've subscribed!

I am blown away at your presentation. This method is exactly what I have been looking for to wire my race car. The only thing I'd like to add is a 2nd master cut-off switch inside the car. I'll see if I can figure that out. Thanks so much for sharing.

This video is amazing. I've been redoing the wiring in my 1958 Austin Healey Sprite and while I've been successful (for the most part) this helped me identify a few items that I've done wrong.. That diode between the alternator and fuse panel is one. Thank you for this.
Great video!!! Currently, I'm sitting in our diesel pusher motor home in Nokomis, Florida (west coast of Florida). A week ago Thursday, a hurricane (Helene) traveling south to north passed near here. A lot of title flooding was generated. The RV park we're in is on title water. About a quarter of our park flooded. Luckily, the section where our motorhome is didn't flood. No matter, a week ago Wednesday, when trying to move our diesel pusher rig inland to high ground, the engine failed to turn over. I replaced the chassis batteries because they (2 of them) needed to be replaced. It still wouldn't crank. Result: I was not able to accomplish the rig's move inland. I've spent the past week trying to figure out why my rig's engine won't turn over. It's not a battery thing. I believe it's a solenoid/relay/fuse thing. I've watched a lot of videos about solenoids/relays/fuses. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST -- B-E-S-T -- video I've watched. I finally have a much clearer understanding how the electric system of an auto works. Can't thank you enough for this outstanding video lesson!!!!! Bill Cook

Very very good! I just built an engine run test stand. Like an actual car the test/run stand is wired almost exactly the same way. I ran into a few bumps along the way, but it works well except for the alternator wiring. I screwed up somewhere, this video will help me rethink that. I got some good ideas about solenoids, diode use, and parts that will clean up my build dramatically. Oh yes this will work out fine, back to work for me.
This is a perfect example of how it all works. So anyone could learn to work on a car or at the very least figure out if it's a bad ground or a faulty part.
Wow a video that I can finally understand why I need the diode and light! The excitor wire also knows as post 1 of the alternator wire was sending power to my radio, dome like that and other stuff and I was like what the heck? Why is there power if my switch is off! Haha, so now I know why. Thank you!!

Excellent job! You covered pretty much every bit of the basics needed for the start/run/charging. Well explained. I never thought of the diode across the solenoid! If you are willing to do so, it would be worth it to make a video covering externally regulated alternators too. There's vehicles out there that still use them....or stubborn guys like me that still like them! You do a great job on your presentation and explanation!

These wiring tutorials are better than a college course. More entertaining and simplified for novice people. Is it possible that you might do a video on wiring dash gauges? (Spedo, temp, volts,...) with that a person has all the info necessary to completely wire a vehicle from scratch. Thank you again for such great videos!!!

Dang i learned so much from this. One surprising thing is i learned why my alternator light turns on in my dash when i turn my key on but is of once i start the car. I always thought something must of been wired up funky but turns out it is supposed to be that way. Super cool

Thank you for posting this series and helping me grasp the boogeyman that is automotive wiring. Think a car is hard?? Try a 33 yr old motorhome that was wired and rewired countless times by different people, not all of them knowledgable. I have lots of accessories to account for and that's before even tackling the 120VAC side of things. Anyway, I'll be using your videos as a reference.
I don't have an electrical degree either. However, I had a ham radio operator's license by my sophomore year in high school which required an advanced electronics test. Been doing automotive wiring since about 1977. I would have used an actual battery switch to simplify the project. Also, you can order continuous duty, high ampere solenoids with built in diodes or resisters to simplify wiring. I have used hundreds of them for remote switched, high power loads but never ran the starter through one and cannot recommend them for cranking amps. Your fuse panel is marine grade and is not rated for moisture or particulate intrusion. For some reason people seem to think that marine grade is superior to automotive grade and that is just not true. Also, I would suggest that race and competition type installs should follow the stricter electrical guidelines as set forth in NFPA Pamphlet 1901 for low voltage DC circuits. It has the most comprehensive guidelines in the automotive sector. My ultimate goal has always been to reduce failure points like cheap connectors, unrated equipment, and unnecessary complexity while increasing reliance through high temperature rated wire and loom, IP67 minimum rated equipment, no splicing, and bench testing of all critical components before installation. I have 30 year old installs that get pressure washed on a regular basis that are still in service. Only 2 warranty problems in those years which I treated as learning experiences. This was in a manufacturing environment, not hobby or side line stuff. I was pleased that you called out Cole Hersey by name. The very first part of a quality installation is to use quality parts and Cole Hersey is peerless in this regard. If you think one of their products is the cause of a problem you had better check your work because that probably is the actual problem.
Excellent video! A few comments to fill in a bit more. Fuses are generally sized to the wire rather than the load. The wire is presumably sized to the load but the point is fuses don't protect devices they keep the wire from burning up. Older vehicles have a fusible link or a thin piece of wire in-line that will burn up and the thin wire might not be easy to spot. Typically it is one gauge smaller and a few inches long. Obviously starters without a solenoid on them will not spin down faster without a diode since they use centrifugal force.

The voltage sense wire should go to the main power distribution point. It works ok as you have it wired when your total amperage used is relatively low, but if you have electric fans and fuel pump you'll have excessive voltage drop and run into issued with the battery not charging even when you have 13.5 volts at the alternator output.
Yeah I should include a few key pieces of info with my question. The battery location is 9n the passenger side of the trunk with the components located on battery box in the space next to right rear tire. It goes battery, mega fuse, continuous duty solonoid, and finally starter solenoid thru the frame to starter on the same side. Thanks for taking the time to get back. Boy, you have to take some people right by the hand don't you. Im one of them.
Haha! In that case - definitely have a big fuse right next to your battery between the continuous duty solenoid and the positive battery terminal. The amperage rating will depend on the total amperage draw of all of your components. I would also recommend a fuse on both ends of your alternator power wire. Since electricity flows both ways in that specific circuit, it’s nice to have it protected at both ends!
You only say you don't have an electrical degree for all the trolls on the internet haha but this is solid advice and very applicable to home mechanic. You don't need a degree if you know how to read and research.
Lord help… I’m gonna be a wiring genie-ass…😂 I know some stuff like how relays work and all that but I never had a clue about what a diode was… Thanks again for explaining everything in a simple way. That’s definitely something I needed to learn about because I use to drag race back in the day and I wasn’t far from needing a battery disconnect and a roll cage and all that mess.

You can also use a ballast resistor in series with a standard solenoid to lower the input voltage down to roughly 8 volts as long as it stays engaged it will not overheat the internal parts

You can actually get diodes in the same form factor as ATC fuses, so you can use a standard fuse holder. Ford used them for a while. Makes it super handy to charge or trouble shoot.
Only question I have is if your ignition is powered thru your fuse box that you have how is said race car supposed to start? The power to the fuse box is cut while cranking so how is that solved? Different key switch? Otherwise great videos
There is no ignition system in this video. Usually with a regular old school ignition coil you would have one wire to the coil that goes through a resistor to lower the voltage. That one would be active when in the run position. Then during cranking a different source without a ballast resistor would give it full voltage when the key is in the start position.

@@WiringRescue I do need to ask you do you think that this system will handle running the ignition main power? so jump in turn on the toggle switch to turn on the fuse panel power and then push a button for the ignition then the fuel pump button and then hit the start button?
It all depends how much amperage your ignition system draws. You need to know those numbers to determine the fuse, switch, and wire sizes for each circuit.

This is what wiring companies should send as instruction manuals. I'm on my second full car rewire and this one really has me scratching my head. The instructions are terrible but your videos make it all so clear. Now i just need to identify what wires my painless kit is using. I've subscribed!

This video is amazing. I've been redoing the wiring in my 1958 Austin Healey Sprite and while I've been successful (for the most part) this helped me identify a few items that I've done wrong.. That diode between the alternator and fuse panel is one. Thank you for this.

Currently, I'm sitting in our diesel pusher motor home in Nokomis, Florida (west coast of Florida).
A week ago Thursday, a hurricane (Helene) traveling south to north passed near here. A lot of title flooding was generated. The RV park we're in is on title water. About a quarter of our park flooded. Luckily, the section where our motorhome is didn't flood. No matter, a week ago Wednesday, when trying to move our diesel pusher rig inland to high ground, the engine failed to turn over. I replaced the chassis batteries because they (2 of them) needed to be replaced. It still wouldn't crank. Result: I was not able to accomplish the rig's move inland.
I've spent the past week trying to figure out why my rig's engine won't turn over. It's not a battery thing. I believe it's a solenoid/relay/fuse thing. I've watched a lot of videos about solenoids/relays/fuses. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST -- B-E-S-T -- video I've watched. I finally have a much clearer understanding how the electric system of an auto works.

Very very good! I just built an engine run test stand. Like an actual car the test/run stand is wired almost exactly the same way. I ran into a few bumps along the way, but it works well except for the alternator wiring. I screwed up somewhere, this video will help me rethink that. I got some good ideas about solenoids, diode use, and parts that will clean up my build dramatically. Oh yes this will work out fine, back to work for me.
This is a perfect example of how it all works. So anyone could learn to work on a car or at the very least figure out if it's a bad ground or a faulty part.

Wow a video that I can finally understand why I need the diode and light! The excitor wire also knows as post 1 of the alternator wire was sending power to my radio, dome like that and other stuff and I was like what the heck? Why is there power if my switch is off! Haha, so now I know why. Thank you!!

If you are willing to do so, it would be worth it to make a video covering externally regulated alternators too. There's vehicles out there that still use them....or stubborn guys like me that still like them!

These wiring tutorials are better than a college course. More entertaining and simplified for novice people. Is it possible that you might do a video on wiring dash gauges? Dang i learned so much from this. One surprising thing is i learned why my alternator light turns on in my dash when i turn my key on but is of once i start the car. I always thought something must of been wired up funky but turns out it is supposed to be that way. Super cool

Thank you for posting this series and helping me grasp the boogeyman that is automotive wiring. Think a car is hard?? Try a 33 yr old motorhome that was wired and rewired countless times by different people, not all of them knowledgable. I have lots of accessories to account for and that's before even tackling the 120VAC side of things. Anyway, I'll be using your videos as a reference.

I don't have an electrical degree either. However, I had a ham radio operator's license by my sophomore year in high school which required an advanced electronics test. Been doing automotive wiring since about 1977. I would have used an actual battery switch to simplify the project. Also, you can order continuous duty, high ampere solenoids with built in diodes or resisters to simplify wiring. I have used hundreds of them for remote switched, high power loads but never ran the starter through one and cannot recommend them for cranking amps. Your fuse panel is marine grade and is not rated for moisture or particulate intrusion. For some reason people seem to think that marine grade is superior to automotive grade and that is just not true. Also, I would suggest that race and competition type installs should follow the stricter electrical guidelines as set forth in NFPA Pamphlet 1901 for low voltage DC circuits. It has the most comprehensive guidelines in the automotive sector. My ultimate goal has always been to reduce failure points like cheap connectors, unrated equipment, and unnecessary complexity while increasing reliance through high temperature rated wire and loom, IP67 minimum rated equipment, no splicing, and bench testing of all critical components before installation. I have 30 year old installs that get pressure washed on a regular basis that are still in service. Only 2 warranty problems in those years which I treated as learning experiences. This was in a manufacturing environment, not hobby or side line stuff.
I was pleased that you called out Cole Hersey by name. The very first part of a quality installation is to use quality parts and Cole Hersey is peerless in this regard. If you think one of their products is the cause of a problem you had better check your work because that probably is the actual problem.
Excellent video! A few comments to fill in a bit more. Fuses are generally sized to the wire rather than the load. The wire is presumably sized to the load but the point is fuses don't protect devices they keep the wire from burning up. Older vehicles have a fusible link or a thin piece of wire in-line that will burn up and the thin wire might not be easy to spot. Typically it is one gauge smaller and a few inches long. Obviously starters without a solenoid on them will not spin down faster without a diode since they use centrifugal force.

The voltage sense wire should go to the main power distribution point. It works ok as you have it wired when your total amperage used is relatively low, but if you have electric fans and fuel pump you'll have excessive voltage drop and run into issued with the battery not charging even when you have 13.5 volts at the alternator output.

Yeah I should include a few key pieces of info with my question. The battery location is 9n the passenger side of the trunk with the components located on battery box in the space next to right rear tire. It goes battery, mega fuse, continuous duty solonoid, and finally starter solenoid thru the frame to starter on the same side.

Haha! In that case - definitely have a big fuse right next to your battery between the continuous duty solenoid and the positive battery terminal. The amperage rating will depend on the total amperage draw of all of your components. I would also recommend a fuse on both ends of your alternator power wire. Since electricity flows both ways in that specific circuit, it’s nice to have it protected at both ends!

You can also use a ballast resistor in series with a standard solenoid to lower the input voltage down to roughly 8 volts as long as it stays engaged it will not overheat the internal parts

You can actually get diodes in the same form factor as ATC fuses, so you can use a standard fuse holder. Ford used them for a while. Makes it super handy to charge or trouble shoot.

Only question I have is if your ignition is powered thru your fuse box that you have how is said race car supposed to start? The power to the fuse box is cut while cranking so how is that solved? Different key switch? Otherwise great videos
There is no ignition system in this video. Usually with a regular old school ignition coil you would have one wire to the coil that goes through a resistor to lower the voltage. That one would be active when in the run position. Then during cranking a different source without a ballast resistor would give it full voltage when the key is in the start position.

@@WiringRescue I do need to ask you do you think that this system will handle running the ignition main power? so jump in turn on the toggle switch to turn on the fuse panel power and then push a button for the ignition then the fuel pump button and then hit the start button?
It all depends how much amperage your ignition system draws. You need to know those numbers to determine the fuse, switch, and wire sizes for each circuit.
I watch this like once a month.
