    Adding a push button start ignition to a race car is pretty darn cool, and these days you can easily buy all the parts you need online, and have it in a couple of days. Once you have the start button, and any additional switches mounted into the dashboard, wiring it all together can often be overwhelming. That is why I have made this video showing how to wire a push button start to your race car, for beginners. I also review some simple things, like choosing the right fuse size, choosing wire size, how to wire a relay, how to wire a fuel pump, and how to wire an ignition switch to a push button start.

    I add a "debugging mode" panel under the hood to bypass and take control of ignition, ecu and starter. Because I work on my car in a tight garage, going back and forth just to start the engine is not efficient for me. So I add a remote panel to turn on my car from the engine bay. I also add a NC switch so when I close the hood my circuit gives control back to key ignition switch

    Great video. I just purchase a completed cobra replica that used a 92 mustang gt donor car and it’s wiring harness and ignition switch. The 92 mustang is notorious for a bad ignition switch. I want to remove the keyed ignition switch and use a new keyed switch (as in your video just using the off and run position) and the push button switch panel that you have in this video. I understand how you’ve wired the setup in the video.
    My question is using this setup on a car equipped with an ECU that needs to be powered during the start sequence and some components removed (or switched supply voltage) to reduce the current draw during the start sequence.
    I’ve mapped which items are powered in the current “RUN” position on which are powered during the “START” position. Should I use an additional relay to remove the power from items removed during the start position or just use the signal wire to the start relay on the back of the new push button?

  • @user-to2od6rt2b
    @user-to2od6rt2b 9 місяців тому

    Quick question, the main wire with the fuse, you placed a 20 amp fuse at the beggining before adding the fuel pump. Once you added the pump you switched it to a 5 amp fuse. Why did you do that?
    2nd question, would you have to repeat the relay process like the fuel pump if you add another higher amp item like lets say the window motor?
    Enjoying the videos and learning a lot, wish I found them earlier. Thank you.

    So I'm wondering I would like to have a push start with no ignition
    So if everything is wired as it should I'll have the power switch start button and 2 accessories switches
    Can I leave the accessorie switches on and just turn off the power switch or do the accessories need to be off because the relays are drawing power

    I have the big shut off switch in the back of my race car. I have a painless wiring switchboard with eight switches. Those wires will go to a relay board and from the relay board to all the labeled items where do I go from that point

      It is only used for the light bulb in the switch. If your switch doesn’t have that bulb, or you don’t care about the bulb, skip it!

    Dude I have a brother who is super wire tech and installer, he has never explained it this simple.
    So even though you push the red button to start, you haft turn your ignition key off to kill the motor right ?
    Thank you so much. much.

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  Рік тому +1

      It all sort of depends how you wire the engine, but generally speaking, yes, you would turn off power to the the ignition system some way.

    If im using my cars factory harness, do i need to worry about adding extra relays? Or can i wire the button and switches to the factory circuit that already has the relays to not blow my fuse

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  Рік тому

      If you are using a factory harness that already has relays and fuses, you should be fine swapping this push button in place of the normal ignition switch. If you are running the toggle switches off of these same wires, it could be a problem because you’ll be stealing electricity from a circuit not meant to have additional components.

    So the push button part doesn't have a ground? I saw another video using this same switch setup, and the guy had a ground hooked up to that push button. I can't seem to get mine to work. I press the button and I hear one click, then every subsequent button press there's nothing. I was wondering if perhaps I still have an open circuit.

    Wouldn't the fuel pump kick on when you put the key in the "on" position (in a stock vehicle)? If so how do you wire in a relay to the on position switch?

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  Рік тому

      It depends on the car. Some fuel pumps run for about 3 seconds when the key is turned on and then stop unless the engine starts. Other fuel pumps only turn on when the engine is rotating. So to wires yours, you would need to probably do what the fuel injection system is requiring. That varies depending on the type of vehicle.

    So question, if the relay for the fuel pump is a 30amp, why a 20amp fuse? Why not a 30? I’m curious because I’m hooking this same switch panel up in my race car now with zero wiring experience. Been using your videos which are amazing and helpful

    • @WiringRescue
      @WiringRescue  Рік тому +1

      The fuse size is based on how much amperage the accessory will draw through the circuit. So if your fuel pump draws 18 amps, I would generally go with the next size up for a fuse, which is 20. I explain in greater detail here:
