I've been building my dream car for a while now, mechanical and fabrication I can do, wiring I cannot. I tried looking for complete noob wiring videos a few times but didn't come across yours until recently. I can only assume you set out to use your knowledge to help those who don't know where to start and want it explaining in plain English from top to bottom, and my god you have succeeded. I want to build a completely new body harness for the car to have only what I want and need, how I want it, and I didn't know where to start. But after watching almost all of your videos I actually have the confidence to do so and will be ordering all my wiring supplies in the near future. Keep up the good work man, you do it flawlessly.
Anything that I can do to help keep a cool car on the road makes me feel good! I’m glad that you’re enjoying the videos, and I appreciate you taking the time to watch them! Thank YOU, and stay tuned, I’ve got lots more left to do!
If I was 16 again and this channel was available in 1995, my custom wiring harness business would probably have been a big success. I have been building hotrod harnesses for almost 30 years and if anyone is interested in learning about wiring, relays, fuses etc, this channel is the best as far as I am concerned.
Thank you! If you like this one, I’ve got lots more just like it. Here is my personal favorite which took me forever to make! ua-cam.com/video/Yz9kqxWkoHI/v-deo.htmlsi=Wv3l-QPuSAvvsmdq. Thanks for watching!
Haha! I should totally watch my own videos then, I could use a whole lot of therapy! Seriously though - Thank you for watching - it’s really appreciated!
Good stuff, thanks. Regarding the middle example. Guessing the yellow fuse would probably be whatever the switch itself is rated for? Then as for 3-prong switches, assuming it's just the same setup except the 3rd prong being a ground?
By far the best videos out there for auto wiring. You got that Mr Rodgers vibe with that Neal Degrassi of the auto wiring world knowledge. You make it all approachable, understandable and something to enjoy. Thank you!...p.s. working on a 1963 Buick Riviera.
Great video. Only thing that may help would be a close up of the wires and how they are hooked up? But you definitely get the idea, the negative relay switch was something I'd never heard or thought of before.
Ok Mr. Ratty Muscle Car, I have a rebel wiring harness with a fuse box. Would it be proper to use the same hotwire coming from the fuse box to power your switched line going to pin 86 and coming out of the fuse box send power to pin 30 as long as it's before your switch going to pin 86. Seems to me doing it this way you only use one fuse to cover 2 lines
That should be okay to do, but just be aware that the same fuse that protects your accessory is the one that protects your switch. So it’s possible that the switch side of the circuit OR the accessory side of the circuit could pop the fuse making diagnosing issues a tiny bit more challenging. Lastly - I’m am just some random guy on the internet, so please do additional research so your info comes from multiple reliable sources! :)
Ok, so could we use a two prong flasher in line with 87a to alternate the side marker lamps and front turn signals like a wig wag ? I have LED white/yellow bulbs to utilize the nice clear lenses in the grille as both daytime tuning lights and switch to yellow for turn signal when there is a load on them I have the same ones in my older Grand Cherokee, Auxitos have lasted me quite a while so far. The new side marker lamp assemblies I have are also LED. Would love for them to alternate flashing
@rattymusclecar - You stated another use for negative triggers "were if you had a whole bank of relays under the hood..." and it got me thinking and now asking if you could do a comparison of the benefits between wiring positive and negative triggers in relay banks for "race car" style panels. I am finishing up my panel under the dash using your videos: Hotrod race car wiring and the inertia switch video. Your comment about negative triggers has me wondering if I could have done the wiring differently and therefore making it even nicer by running less wires via negative triggers. What do you think?
Great video! I'm planning on installing whip lights in a utv using a relay and a 5 pin rocker switch and I want to be able to run the lights when I'm stopped with the key off. Would wiring it with a negative trigger alow this to happen? Thanks
I have question: I am reworking my car old wire installation, so bow i am on headlights and rear lights. So i am wondering, can i putrear lights with hugh beam and low beam with seperate rrlays so ehen i turn lights i have rear also on one switch or need something different ??
How could you use the light switch as the "kill switch"? I was thinking that every time I need to start the car I have to turn the light on first. Once the drive is over you turn off the car and the lights.
Willing to show us how to read Mitchell on demand alldata…. Schematics? Not only reading/following along but how to interpret and locate info along the wire or in boxes….
I have a question regarding this wondering if you can help. I have a headlight that is using its original harness and an additional for the led lights I purchased . But they have included a line for signal lights no negative line integrated in the led but it has only 1 line for signal . I have purchased a generic harness ( street legal kit) and tried splicing in on there positive with the signal led it also has an led flash relay it recognized it starts flashing as soon i put the positive of the harness on a positive terminal the signal indicator colum that came with the kit is in the off position what could this be . Any help is greatly appreciated.
Does the fuse that’s going to #30 have to be sized for the device it could be controlling or the size of the relay? If that wiper motor is 20 anp and the relay is 40 amp rating, what size fuse goes to #30 ?
Instead of several relays which are ignitioned triggered, why not to add just one giant 200A relay and let this control an extra fuse box. This wiring will be ignition triggered and attached to this fuse box are components like power windows, headlights, turn signals, radiator fan, fuel pump etc. Will this work?
The electric fan on my truck is wired to run on a ground leg instead of a hot. For the exact reason mentioned, grounds out nothing burns down just the fan comes on.
Thanks....great video and explanation.... But quick question..... How will lights stay off.... With switch ON, the high beams are on .... With switch OFF, the low beams are on..... So how to switch both off ? Coz when i switch off the car the lights will stay on? How does that part work.... Just wondering..... Do i add another ON/OFF switch to control power to the light switch or pin 30 to the Key ignition?
Im trying to wire a dirt bike. If i turn off the switch to the negative trigger relay and i don't have anything plugged in to the accesory wire (87A) will it still use up my batteries power in any significant way? Thanks
As long as I’m understanding your design correctly, you are correct. It will not drain your battery. The two ways that it would are: 1) if you have power connected to 86 and ground on 85. The relay would be activated and therefore use some electricity. 2) if you have power on 30 and some kind of component on 87A, the power will flow right through the relay to the component and power up that component.
You are very welcome. I'm wondering. It embarrassing to admit I was a mechanic for years. I pretty much stopped working on cars oh mid 90s. Needless to say I didn't do wiring hahaha. Buy do u have a video on how to find shorts ?? I've got a 91 standard cab base 2.5 4 cylinder automatic S10 and I have a short that's popped up. It blows the running light and dash light fuse. I have an idea it's got something to do with the radio I just put in it. I used wires that went to the old radio. When I turn headlights on the radio turns off an now its blowing the fuse. I have to admit I did try cleaning up some of my wiring glum I had from putting gages, a push button and a couple toggle switches in. After watching a lot videos etc. Bmi apologize for bothering you with all this I'm sure it's a radio wire and I can find the problem BUT I would love to be able to or know how to actually be able to pin pint it hopefully by just needing a ohm meter a test light. I apologize again and any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks jeff

Is their a negative and a positive trigger relay. Or it just depends how you wire it up?
It’s determined by the way that you wire it. The relay itself is the same. :)
