  • To ensure the strength of the structure we add 3 deadman, pack in backfill with caliche soil, and put the arch theory to use! We are over half way up on the lower section!

    every friday i look forward to your vids. I wish here in kansas we could construct like you but the soil would tear apart your walls in a couple of years < high plasticity index> first rain you would have a swimming pool water coming in from the bottom
    I worked on a house on top of a hill that had 3 sump pumps that ran all the time the house sat on solid rock they could never figure where the water came from

    Eastern Canada, we look at between 40 to 45 inches of rain/snow a year. Many times during the winter we get 1 to 10 foot (drifts) per day or two of a bad storm, but it doesn't translate to much rain (precipitation) its really cool to see a climate like yours, right about this time a year, i'm pretty envious. We are supposed to get about a foot or two tonight, and I'm watching videos about people building in the desert. : )

    Toward the end you say you're going to put a roof on it. Had you considered just decreasing the diameter of each additional layer so that they form a dome? Once you get a good solid dome, put a thick tarp over it and bury it. Having it completely subterranean should help keep the temperature down in the summer, and up in the winter.

    I've lived all my life in the arid American West. If a stream of water burst out of a hole I was digging, I'd probably have a heart attack! My well is 164 ft. deep and my neighbors, just up the hill, is over 300 ft. deep.

We have been having unusually hot temps. & rain here so I have been unable 2 have ours dug out 2 start our shelter. But as U said, U have 2 go by the area of the US U live N as 2 what building standards U build by ! U R blessed with an area that does not require as much preparation & that is wonderful ! ! I just really enjoy watching & learning ! ! As always ! Have a safe enjoyable weekend ! ! !

    I'm in Alaska, I WISH we could dig down like that lol. You'd get 3 feet and hit a boulder, you'd get six feet and hit permafrost. Further you go down the more and more harder stuff your going to hit. To even get to water, you got to get almost down about 150 feet in some areas, 250 feet at one of my in law's houses. Alaska is weird lol

    For stability you could have also set each new layer of earth bag one quarter inch back like they do with tire wall construction in an earthship.

    I have a question. Do you add up another material to the soil inside de bags? I noticed you just put the soil alone. It´s a great family proyect, specially the side where you spend time together building something for all of you. Greets from México.

    I wish you guys could see my project, being inspired by y’all, i made a village in my back yard. One is 8X10 has an ondura roof, red. Real windows and shutters, i made a door, put a mountain laurel handle on it, and a frog door knocker. It’s white, with lots of stained trim..oh the floor is recycled red bricks, it house’s our water pump ad all our garden tools, pressure washer, potting stuff. My husband wired it for me, otherwise i did it all by myself. It has a little porch like shae s building. My kayaks are stored on the back of it, its really cute. Then i wanted to extend a shed we had that was 8X14. Now its 16X14. Soil cement floor, real windows home made doors,and tin roof. White with shutters ad trim to match the pump house i made, my sweet husband ran electric for me i have light, plugs, headers, a donated air conditioner, a real nice work bench, art supplies, cabinets. I own lots of new tools now..nice power tools, cordless, and pneumatic, air compressor, it’s really unique, I see my husband showing off my work to everybody , i was depressed, being treated for it, but your family inspired me, i made y’all my family sort of, and for 3 months i worked and focused on my little homestead. Y’all helped me,so much, and i wanted to say thank you. Wish i could send you pictures, my husband documented the build. I don’t do facebook. I later built a deck with steps for my 91 year old father with a roof awning. Y’all inspired me and i wanted to say thanks. I am anonymous mom, because my son used to DJ AS DJANONYMOUS, now th owns a production company called a.n.d entertainment. Does all the music concerts in Jacksonville Fl. My second son is the lead field service engineer for Phillips. Doing medical machines for cancer treatment in MRIs. Traveling a lot 200 plus flights per year. My youngest son works as a server in a gourmet restaurant in Jacksonville Fl, Called BistroAix. So I’ve been a subscriber a long time, live for the Friday nights. Love the dogs, and all the animals. I had horses and a burrow when I was growing up. I wanted to not be a stranger..thanks for the hearts. If you can zoom in on my picture icon i think its my pump house..sorry about the long letter...I’m Barbara.

    Why didn't you use some 6" flexible pipe around the outside of the wall to make use of the temperature of the earth to heat and cool your building?

    I was curious to see if you did any additional reenforcement on the walls. Keying them into the back fill is an interesting idea. I know it adds to the cost but I'm considering soil cement to help stabilize the back fill. I'm planning to build in a wetter area and the soil isn't as dense as the desert environment you're in. Just interesting to see some one do a full on earthbag basement.

      Hi grayhard. I question the use of keys using earth bags. Earthbags act poor in tension. The only strength they have is that of the plastic bags bearing on the reo bars that are hammered through them to secure the anchors to the walls. This is hardly enough to react against any earth pressure applied to the back of the walls. The earth is these anchor bags aren't providing any benefit. I would consider using a different material for the anchor and strengthening the connection to the earthbag wall. The anchor is only as strong as the weakest link.

    This looks so interesting. But question: Do you have any issues with mold or mildew with earth bag buildings where you live?

    • @ElGatoLoco698
      @ElGatoLoco698 8 років тому +1

      Being in the desert, I doubt this family has mold or mildew issues but I can't speak for them. I do know that earthbag construction is no more subject to mold and mildew as a traditionally built home. However I have heard that it might grow on the cob but that's something that would need to be replaced every year or two anyway. A sealing coat of lime mortar would eliminate the threat of mold or mildew.

    Are the bags solid plastic do they have holes, so the walls will be able to breathe and store/release humidity?

    • @mylittlehomestead
      @mylittlehomestead  8 років тому +2
