- A video about the method to my decisions of house design, location/ siting of the house on the land, foundation I chose, and the permitting process for my county. Included are mistakes made, and things I might do differently today.

Mistakes teach you more than successful achievements
So true!
This is really awesome and very inspirational! There aren't many videos showing women building their homes. I want to do the same and have been studying for years, and it helps me to see women doing what I hope to do soon. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks! I got help for most of the physical building, but the project management is 100% mine. Let me know if you have any questions or have a topic you'd like to know more about.
This is really great! I absolutely love that there's so little fluff in the video. So many people don't think to write a script or think that they need to give a history of cob construction before talking about their own experiences. This is invaluable and I'm certainly subscribing for more stuff like it!
Thank you! My life has been chaotic, but I definitely will be doing another, hopefully before the end of the year.
Thanks for posting this. The permitting and logistics are the intimidating part of building. The cob is the fun easy stuff
@KayItForward you are so right!
Greetings from the LooseNatural farm in Andalusia Spain where we currently live through a drought and contemplating building a cob house.
🎉I "officially" declare you a WOWZA WOMAN Jen, an inspiration to all others seeking autonomy over their life's journey. 💪👍😘. Me, a retired 70 year old nurse who had a lot of similar dreams but failed on the follow-through. Now your subscriber #196.
Aw! Thank you! I'll let you know when the follow-through is through. It's not been my strong-suit, either
Thank you so much for noticing your errors. That is super helpful for those of us who are planning a cob house. Beautiful glass lights 😊
I have more errors to share. Stay tuned. Send me a message if you're ready to start, and I haven't added any more videos. I'm happy to go over your plans with you to see if I can spot any places you may want to revisit.
Thank you so much for this video. I’m planning my first cob home and the mistakes are the most valuable things you could have passed on. 😊. I will be building in Kenya and although the climate is different, on the plus side they have been building with natural materials forever.
Thanks again.
Thank you!! That's the biggest reason im making these videos. I have more mistakes to pass on. Stay tuned! Also, you can ask me anything, and if I have experience with it, I'll 4 pass it on, and maybe make a video on it.
@@The_Jen_Reilly thanks! I sure will. I’m so excited about this new journey I’m on. I can’t wait to get started.
thank you!! there's not much info on this yet so its so helpful
I'm so glad I you've found this helpful.
Oh this is so awesome! I’ve been hoping to build a cob house on my land. By the looks of your photos I think we are neighbors.
I'm glad you found the video helpful!! I'll be posting more like this.
Amazing work. Including the mistakes is so valuable.
Thanks! I really hope so!
Very thorough thank you!
@@UniqueAZRocks you are welcome! I'm finally back to working on the project after a 4 1/2 year break. I hope to post photos and video in the next month of so.
wow! thank you so much for sharing this!!
Very well done video thank you immensely
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful.
Brave Lady... My experience with contractor's makes me mad even after twenty years. Men who sit in there trucks talking on their phones, lining up their next job while charging me fifty dollars an hour, and being told that that's how business is done... Not on my dime! Now my son's are grown and guess what they do for a living?
Oh boy! I was blessed to find an electrician and plumber (after I did the rough-in) who were respectful of me, my efforts, and my time!
Very enlightening video! Thank you! I go for adobe, which is pretty much the same!
@marioshadjikyriacou3381 I have adobe bricks from a 100+ year old abandoned adobe house in the floor! My floor is going to be polished dirt.
@@The_Jen_Reilly it would be nice to see the final result! Looking forward to!
👍
You dont need a roof to collect water. You can start with poles and tarps. I have no roof but 1500litres of fresh water 😊
I agree. I've just been overwhelmed with the whole project.
@@The_Jen_Reilly I totally understand I'm in limbo. Need $5000 for my own land. I'm not allowed to practice cob techniques where I rent as I'm not allowed to use the earth on the land unless I climb up into the jungle which I physically can't do. So I have to find simpler and cheap ways to do things.
Jen, great informational video. After getting your plans reviewed and approved, did they tell you that you must get every step approved? You say that you did the plumbing and it failed. Does every step require an inspector to check your work? I’m sure that adds a lot of $$, am I right?
Yes, for the most part they required ongoing/process inspections. Definitely electric, septic and plumbing. A lot of your needs will depend on your governing agencies. There are places with no code enforcement. My county has very homeowner-friendly code for everything except plumbing and electric, which are state supervised. The delays and re-inspections weren't terribly expensive. I basically discovered that if you're nice to "the man" and play by the rules, it's not awful. Ask informed questions so you don't overburden the clerks and inspectors. For me the biggest aha was to realize that the system is "mostly" in place to protect you and FUTURE homeowners. If you only think about your needs and capabilities to live with your construction, owners after you may not be informed or capable of what you find a funny little idiosyncrasy.
Seems the cost wasn't much of a concern for you. The idea behind cob is to have low cost housing. Mostly saving on DIY labour. Same time i guess for yhe house to be practical and lasting, the technicalities need to be catered to. Its a beautiful house Mashallah
That's one angle of why to build with cob. As an artist, I love the sculptural nature of the medium. The community of cobbers from around the world is amazing. I have made friends from every continent on this journey. I don't regret the house or its design. Sure, there are things I would do differently now, but it provided a learning experience that was different from what any other construction method could have provided.
