  • We've been working hard to get the earth bags built to ground level and it's finally complete! Now granted, we'll have more bagging to do between the rafters once we start the roof but for now we have a bag break! Soon we will be putting in the steps and such. Check out the video and feel free to share it on your social medias. Shae :P

    I haven't been commenting only because I couldn't wait until to see the next segment. I know this is an older video, but I have a smile from ear to ear each time I watch what a beautiful family you all are. Diesel is so darn cute! But I'm sure he must be big by now. Thank you for making me smile during the pandemic. God bless you all.

    Couple things that I was wondering if it would make you more efficient . What about using some sort or large funnel to make filling the bags easier. For example, have a metal slide and when you throw the dirt on it and it slides down into the funnel and into the bag. Also if you rolled the end of the bag upon itself and unrolled it as you filled it.. I was also thinking about loading the bags near the pile if dirt, and then transfer them using a two or 4 wheel dolly. You could also transfer them buy having the dolly roll over 2x8's with sides so that you could transfer the bags over open spaces. We used this system when we were putting shingles on our roof and just pulled them up with a rope It just seems so labor intensive the way you are doing it. Also look up something called the Gobagger on youtube and you will get the idea

    mylittlehomestead I have seen other earthbag builders use crushed lava rock in the bags to act as an insulator otherwise the dirt acts as a thermal mass making it a little difficult to control the temp in your building

    • @mylittlehomestead
      @mylittlehomestead  8 років тому +1

      Great idea with the crushed rock. If that material is available, maybe someone could try it out and let us know.

    • @randyrich938
      @randyrich938 8 років тому +1

      +mylittlehomestead a man in Colorado used it. He said it works great. If the rock is not available then one inch foam board on the outside before you cob works as well. Keep up the good work. Love your channel

    Hey Y'all. Looking Good ! ! I have a question, that is if Y'all don't mind. Here N MS we sweat like there ain't no tomorrow ! ! The humidity is unbelieveable also ! ! When Y'all R out there working your hair is blowing where here at 9am it is already close 2 90degrees & I've melted thru 2 T-shirts & my hair while N a ponytail is glued 2 my head still ! ! How does the heat effect your body while working N the direct sun like that? I know its a strange ? but I was just courious. esp if I end up out there a 1 of your work shops N the future ! (I'm reallying hoping that it all works out that Y'all do it ! !). I love Y'all's family oriented, dn 2 earth way of life ! ! Your family values encourage me as much as the building, gardening, raising animals etc. projects that we get 2 take part N with U ! ! Rain has my projects shut dn 4 the time being but I get 2 watch yours while I wait ! ! Have an enjoyable, safe weekend ! ! !

      I did construction at an oil change place once and it happened to be below the water table, so the oil change area would literally flood 4 inches every week through 6 inches of concrete... they had to fix this by building a well behind the building and use the water for landscaping and such

      This is a bit of a problem. We too struggled to find a place that was affordable. A few years back, we ordered directly from China. They were the only ones making this type of bag. We had to import them through customs. This was quite an ordeal. But possible again....maybe? But, don't cross your fingers. The spendy ones can be found at Cal-earth.

    Do these earthbag homes work because of where you live? I am in South Louisiana, I know for sure underground is impossible, unless it is an underground pond lol. But we get LOADS of rain, would that be an issue?

      They can work in many climates. We are no expert at the rain forest climates. But, here in the SW, the typical well is at or below 100 feet. Even the trees have a tap root to reach the water level. Research the foundation types for wet areas. You may have to use a crushed rock footer or maybe concrete. Consider a 3 foot or more eve to keep water away from the sides of the building. We do that here to keep water away. When it rains, it really poor's.

      these earthbag structures are actually very resilient. the dirt in the bags which ideally has a high clay content compacts from the weight of the structure. the outside is finished in cement or clay plaster depending on environment (but it must be able to let moisture out)
      i remember seeing a few pictures of a car that crashed into an earthbag wall. the plaster fell off, but the structure was undamaged.

    Hope that your doggies AVOID any venomous snakes in the area. I didn't hear where you're located, but it sure looks like rattlesnake country.
    Would kill me to learn that a pooch got hit by one of these nasty reptiles.
    Also, is your underground den impervious to both snakes & critters sneaking in?
    Because once you get mice?
    Snakes will flow and the rodents are bad enough by themselves.

Free speech is a hallmark of a mature society and if censorship happens, you wont ever know who actually has the bad ideas. Letting speech flow will show where improvement needs to happen.
