Building an Underground Root Cellar with Burnt Timbers | Shou Sugi Ban, Yakisugi

- With an abundance of dying trees on my properties, building an underground root cellar with charred timbers makes more sense than using concrete and rocks. Burning the wood makes it more resistant to decay from moisture and insects. My vegetable garden is overflowing with food and I need a place to store it immediately and longterm, along with fish and game from the surrounding Canadian wilderness.

I didn't even know what a root cellar was. Now i even know what the shou sugi ban means. Another educational video for me!
the name says it all ... a cellar for roots ... we also call it a pantry ... or cold storage ... essentially what your fridge is now ... a root cellar was the original way to keep stuff longer
Googled shou sugi ban, but nothing came up. What is it? Japanese for root cellar? Love, love, love your videos!!!
@Dream Girls Daily English (or Japanese) is not my native language you see, but bless you nonetheless for being so much smarter than the rest of us.
Good to see you finally got some much needed help, a brand new sawmill and a track loader Good going Shawn .
Well he always made it seem like he was living off the land but I guess he has lots of money to make it doable that maybe most couldn’t afford
@Bob Down No, he has flat out said on this channel that he had an over 7 figure construction business. The man is far from poor.
This has completely stopped being about just surviving. This is thriving and I love it.
Thumbs up for still playing fetch with the dog while working 👍
Cali is just loving life. Playing, swimming in the pond, resting while Her Daddy Does the hard at work. Love your vlogs Shawn. Beautiful craftsmanship👍🏻.
Cali is the Supervisor.
Shawn
Thing's are looking fantastic ..... let's see a cabin, an outdoor kitchen , cali's pond. A huge garden , a sauna , a long house and now adding a root cellar and workshop to the mix. The James Family Off Grid Resort where work is never finished..... what's not to love about these videos .
Don't forget he also built an outhouse, that's really important.
@D M haha "Cali's pond", love it.😂😂😂
Believe me.....I thought of those as well..... I just can't get my jaw off the ground .....With every project he completes I find it harder to comprehend what Shawn has accomplished in a few short years.
..and the screened porch / outdoor kitchen!
@@jd2055 His work ethic amazes me.
Many of us get up, go to work, fight traffic, deal with too many people, wear masks, worry about our future, wonder if things will ever get better. Then, as hoped for, many of us get a notification that our friend Shawn has uploaded another video. We can then escape for awhile to watch and especially learn from a man who seems to know something about everything. A man who loves and respects the land and nature (barred owl, how cool), and loves and prepares a beautiful place for he and his family. I really appreciate how you show affection for your pup (aka job site supervisor), it gets me doing more of the same with ours, she is 13 now. Shawn all the hard work you do to make this a real joy to watch is greatly appreciated more than you know. You truly are a jack of all trades, and master of all it seems, you make hard work look like fun, which it often is. You live in some of the most beautiful country i have ever seen. I wish I had your morning commute. Greetings from West Michigan.
The wood you’ve harvested provides so much, shelter, heat, even helped in food production. Your garden is incredible too, you have many blessings from the forest you live in. It sustains you in so many ways.
Imagine if everyone in the world was this dedicated and hard working, wouldn't be far from perfect tbh.
And fewer folks getting in trouble.
So true..
Better people and society overall
Quiero ver más!!!💕
I'm sure there would be a few who would work this hard to make life miserable for the rest of us just for the sake if it. But, overall, it would probably be good to have more hardworking people like Shawn.
Now that's a start of a root cellar done right!
It takes a lot of courage, wisdom and perseverance to do all these. God bless those who tried hard in life.
God's work. People forgot what it is.
@@RK1FX , I believe very soon all these knowledge will be very necessary. Although I’m not leaving in a weather similar to yours, there isn’t none channel similar in my area ( Brazil), so I’m trying to learn something.... God bless you all...
I'm loving this CHANNEL, It's been so interesting to watching someone build their own
homestead.
I find it very soothing to watch.
Rarely do any writing ,but you know we the people that are watching should give you some feedback. We here love your vlog and wish everything that you are doing is going to be beneficial for your homestead. Your efforts have been seen by many people that are rooted for your time and effort. Love you many blessings.
Well said. This man is an inspiration for many to see and better way of life. Though hard work, I feel it's more rewarding that climbing the corporate ladder.
S Singh, you are right..... I am an old woman and have seen a lot of this world and have gone through very, very hard times. In my younger years I was an executive Secretary and saw what was going on. Giving all that up, and became a housewife and Mother, I enjoyed every (sometimes very hard) minute. Looking back I have to say, Life is too short to spend it on things one does not enjoy. One needs very little to be happy and content....
Who rarely does any writing? I'm confused.
@@silasmarner7586 people who rarely write, pretty simple really
We're rooting for your root cellar.
If more people understood the virtue of self reliance it would be a much better place. Too many people now rely on the government or someone to take care of them. They have many excuses as to why their situation is someone else's fault, and they are envious of those who worked hard to get ahead.
I'm intrigued about what the finished product will look like. The barred owl was exquisite!
That beautiful tale on Kelly! Wagging it back & forth like a flag flying in the wind! 💛💛💛💛
Granddaughter is sleeping over, but knows your video is required watching. She is in awe, as am I.
Chopping, sawing, drilling, chiseling, measuring, hammering, shoveling...do you have a favorite action?
Thank you for giving us a look at the action and progress!
It’s just completely amazing to witness. He doesn’t just use his hands he uses his whole body in his creation. It’s a beautiful thing to watch. It’s art. Cali just wants to be near him. Unless of course there is a fresh pond to play in. The sky shots are so fabulous. The owl shot was incredible. God makes art in Man and mushrooms.💖
Mindy, you put into words what I was unable to express. I am so in awe of Shawn, his videos almost leave me speechless! 🙏🏻💖😍
Well said! Nicely put!👵😁🍀👍 Lots of nice comments that hold merit.😊💕
In addition to exactly everything you said, I find it very refreshing that there is no "explaining" and little talk while Shawn is showing what he is doing.
Excellent words for an excellent Man.
Just imagine how hard your ancestors worked , just to live ...
You're getting so good with cinematography and editing it's ridiculous.
It's funny - because I think you're becoming a master in things you never even intended.
Can't wait to see the finished product.
Shawn YES I say life always starts from the foundation.THE way of basic will need to comeback ALWAYS enjoy you and all you have shared looking forward to your new work! Very funny cali still with the shoveling !🐾♥️🐾♥️🐾♥️☘☘☘🐾🐾♥️🐾♥️
19:22 this moment plus the whole homestead/garden build is why you're special to all of us! Blackened timbers truly look durable. Can't wait for your commentary on the other channel more about this build. Thanks, Shawn!
Absolutely no one on earth deserves to realize this dream lifestyle more than you Shawn!! God bless and protect you and your family always!! 👍👍❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻
That kick at 13:21 was so relatable, an action of shear beauty. A job well done!
I was looking all over for this comment, that kick was really satisfying.
@@mikeisaac3826 Yep very satisfying indeed, we've all been there and done that. Best.
That is damn impressive. I follow a few 'homesteading" self-reliance type channels and I am struck by how often they refer to your channel, so you must be doing something right. I think the young couple at Talesbuan might benefit from your expertise as they have been trying to build a root cellar for some time. Simple Living Alaska also recently had to "undo" their last attempt at a root cellar, although they did a mighty fine job - they were just done in by a high water table. It's exciting to watch you all living your dreams in such beautiful surroundings, especially for those of us who live "trapped" in urban jungles - wishing we could breath clean air and eat our own tomatoes. Keep up the good work!
Respectful comment, Christopher.
I’ve just found Talasbuan and this channel and I’ve thought the same thing - Tova and Matthias are an amazingly hard working young people. They have done so much but could really go to their next level by watching and learning from Shawn.
Once again, I find myself feeling down and depressed by what's going on around me - only to turn on one of your videos and have it all washed away. I finish the video feeling so refreshed, inspired, and most importantly, relaxed. Thank you, Shawn, for sharing what you are doing out there. About a decade left of the huss'n'fuss, then maybe I can join nature and build my own cabin and underground cellar. Thanks, Shawn. Stay healthy.
Thinking along the same line.
🤔 Shawn, I do believe your life story is being made into a series before our eyes. How many others, do you imagine, binge watch these episodes from the very first one, up to now and beyond?
I know I did. Because what you are doing, is great insight into what our pioneers relatives did hundreds of years ago. Despite the occasional use of today's technology too. 💯👍👏😄
i did the same to start with binge watch to catch up on his story from the beginning
He’s an accomplished journal keeper 😉 wouldn’t be that hard . I think people would like it. To hear about his journeys and thoughts along the way. I’m still trying to catch up. I do love watching his videos. I love his energy. He’s a light on my rainy days. ❤️
@@kimberlys.t.7206 amen sister! He has inspired so many people, that it boggles the mind considering it.
I go back and watch his videos, young people today need to see this...heartbreaking to see the destruction going on instead of putting their youth and energy to good use.

Thanks Shawn, with all the craziness down here in the states, I’m so glad you provide us an escape and share this incredible life your building. You have it all going on. Blessings to you.
Cali is so great ! I love seeing her.
Wow! You can do anything you put your mind to; what an incredible man. I love what you're creating for your family...you're like Midas with the Golden Touch, only with many skills, hard work, an artist's touch in all you do, and one sweet dog! It's your own journey, but there are many of us who are proud of you and feel grateful you're sharing what you accomplish. Thank you!👵😁💖🐕🍀
I absolutely love your build videos! I have been watching you since you laid the first log down of your cabin build. Great vids and content!!!

A beautiful, informative, and treasured site. I am taken away from the troubled world to a peaceful place. Thank you for your messages and gift.
Agent Starling when you watch one, you are hooked! He is extremely competent.
Моладец очень нравиться хороши видео
Oh my goodness. This is going to become an incredible series of a build to watch. The resourcefulness of this man is incredible. Wonderful to see he has a mill now. It will make the build so much easier. It will not take away the self reliance factor at all. Can’t wait to see the next video. Hopefully he will get the main structure up before winter so he can begin to store his food.
Yes. To romantically insist on not using any modern technology at all would be to forget the sweat and tears our ancestors made to make the technology happen in the first place, over time, and for us to make effective use of it.
As one of my Native elders said to me once, If they had had the tools they would have used them!!! This is why they were tribal, to divide the work and share the burden. One man on his own can do a lot, but it takes time as Shawn has shown over and over again. Amazing how far he has come but still has a ways to go. Respect.
Mark I say the same about pioneering women, if they’d had, sewing, washing, mixing machines they would have had them and used them!
Philip S. that's The Townsends channel, but when they do stuff like build structures, there's a bunch of 'em building things together.
@@aubieal0878 When grannie got electric due to the rural electric coop she did just that, and her only regret was giving up the wood stove and she cursed the electric stove rest of her life. Just did not cook right after all those years of cooking on wood.
For me, Cali is the comedic relief of the show... that dog! :'D
Today Sunday, beautiful sunny day, the sea is calm and looking at this video made me want to go to my modest ranch 30 kilometers from my house on the beach, I can't complain about anything, I thank God for everything I got with work and dedication but far from being a "My Self Reliance"
What Shawn accomplishes in 1 day would take me 6 incarnations to accomplish. WOW!
I came here feeling pretty damned ornery today. Just couldn't figure out why (maybe because my country has gone down the old toilet). But I wasn't sure I was even going to watch this. I didn't want to waste it on my my bad mood. Luckily I did. Made myself a cup of tea. Turned off the news and sat down to devote some time to watching your outdoor adventures. Feel much better now. Just needed to put some distance between me and all the noise.
I am sure you are not the only one feeling angry, blue and sad about what is going on in our country. But, yes, watching something positive makes all the difference.....
Sky Gerspacher,,,,,,Hang in there , it will improve 😉Keep watching Shaun and Callie and dream on, like I do😌Best wishes, stay safe , from Melbourne, Australia🙋🏻♀️🕊
Elizabeth said, Shawn is so positive; I bet off-screen, too! He's a blessing from the Lord to us, at such a time as this!
Good move...
Same here.
At approximately 33:00 you whisper to yourself, "alright". Yes sir you are. I look forward to your next post as always. As I've texted once before, you are a rare breed, a man amongst men. My utmost respect....
I hardly comment anymore, but prior to watching Shawn's video's I hit the like button. There are no more words I can possibly say about this extraordinary man. I have watched almost all of Shawn's, cali, Mrs James, and daughter's Journey, and how much I admire what this man has done. You are one lucky lady Mrs James. From Victoria, Australia total lockdown, curfew, mandatory masks. Thank you for making lockdown interesting. 😷😇🐨🦘🐕
Shawn you are my friday evening entertainment, since I can't go to tango dancehall, because they are closed since march. Congrats on your vegetables, amazing.. how hard you work.
It just seems so peaceful and quiet while you work out there Shawn, and your "supervisor" is doing a great job keeping an eye on you.
I love how calli patiently waits for you to throw her toy! She's such a good girl
Cali is such a good helper 🐶
This is awesome! This structure looks like it won't rot any time soon.
This guy is the definition of what hard work turns into. "Ain't nothing to it but to do it."
Thanks as always Shawn!
it doesnt have to be hard work ... a few logs each day and eventually you get there .. sure it takes longer ... BUT it still gets done and you still get time to enjoy life while you can appreciate it the best ... once it's done you can sit back in the waning years and appreciate the effort you did then to relax in comfort now.
What Fun Shawn and Cali! Cali always puts a smile on my face, as does a MSR notification! Kind Thanks! You've been doing the work of 10 men it seems to me. Your land becomes paradise more and more and I'm honored that you share it with us! I know it's a lot extra, your great videography! But Please know it is Greatly Appreciated! Love, Light, Peace, Joy and Abundance! DaveyJO in Pa.
😊Lovely comment!
One of the best on your chanel is Kelly your dog, wonderful and such loyalty, man's best friend
My daily routine begins with enjoying "My Self Reliance". This video refreshes me. Sincerely thank.
Looking good mate. The owl seems pretty interested in you. You know with the big zukinies you cut them length wise, 3/4 down, scoop out the middle, fill with minced or diced meat and vegies. Put the lid on and place in say, your pizza oven and bake. It cooks the food wonderfully and gives flavour to the stew....thanks again for a wonderful vid...love Kelly.....
Linda I think Shawn is on a diet, have not seen him cooking for a long time!
@@MJ-lz1km 😂

Good on you for getting the Bobcat to move gravel, moved 15 tons with a shovel and wheelbarrow, never again!
Lol it’s good for you and gets easier with frequency but Shawn is full time isn’t he 👍
give this man a army and the tools and a dream .......thank you shawn for sharing your dream with us and god bless
This is more like luxury cellar with many uses than just vegetable storage cold room. I suppose it will came with temperature control system to maintain constant cooling. Ingenious project, can't wait for next episode !
Always a pleasure to watch you at work, Shawn, and so much to learn at the same time too. Your dedication and skills, not to mention all the work you put into every single process, is an inspiration. There's absolutely nothing not to like or admire here... Keep doing what you are doing. God bless. Cali is such a sweetheart... She adores her pops, and waiting patiently for pops attention. She is such a sweetheart.
Ya know what shawn, I used to be just like you. Built my own log cabin, root cellar, wood shop. I had this big forest garden that was filled with vegetable's. I even had a dog that followed me around all over my property. Eventually I had to wake up and roll my lazy butt out of the bed. great vid as always!
😂
😂😁
had me going there ..that was funny i can relate\
Shawn I am so filled with joy to watch you grow. You deserve all and any success. I remember the episode of you showing the tools you would use to build your cabin, you hadn't even bought the land yet. Your videos were getting about 1000 to 5000 views, but even then I knew that what you were doing was so powerful. Watching you build a homestead has kept me sane while I grind away in my career to get there myself. I share your passion and goals, and recently have gotten closer than ever. Thank you so much for your insight and wisdom through personal experiences, hardwork, and for sharing everything with us.
Most folks go out into the forest to relax and enjoy nature, not you, your skills and vision it's so inspiring.
As impressive is all your building skills I believe the man made pond will be my favorite, I love the life your creating.
Shawn, your amazing. It takes a patient, artistic, talented person to do all the things you do by yourself.
Really loved the ending clip with the owl, gorgeous. A moment to stop and pet Cali was great too. Looks like it's going to be the nicest root cellar I've ever seen. Your videos are like therapy, keep up the great work!
Wow! Root cellar, garden that apparently is doing quite well, is it meeting expdctations? Then you've done a pond , laid the start of a chicken house as well as a shop! Shawn you are a machine! So glad you acquired the portable sawmill, you really needed some additional capability with modern technology! 🙂
One of the biggest reason I 100% respect you is your patience. I don't know if I could do without busting out some power tools. Than again maybe patience comes with this lifestyle. Regardless the work you do is amazing and very inspiring
You are making great progress there Shawn. I'm very impressed with your wood working skills. The cellar will be a fantastic asset towards self reliance. Looking forward to the next episode and following progress with interest. Keep up the good work. Boop to Cali 😉
Looks great. can't wait to see fruit or root cellar finished. Looking forward to see how you store fruit and vegetables in it.
Mister Shawn James, you are sir the true Renaissance Man!!!!!
The thing I love most about your content is you dont mess around and do it right the first time!
the sound from the wood drill is the best sound ever
I think its boring. Literally lol.
Ya I wasn't expecting that, it was a different sound than I was anticipating lol
Sounds of freeing veggies from the garden was equally as tasty to me
Sounds of admitting self sufficiency is not obtainable when holding on to one's own past was sad... 😑
@@1123pawel I am mad that I laughed at that!
With the Jurassic world garden growing, you definitely will need a big root cellar. I for one love the work done with hand tools. I also like the big boy power tools. Great job
Joseph Sauve what were those Jurassic Park greens Shawn pulled up, not cabbage, and I don’t believe it’s greens harvesting season, isn’t that the one you wait for a cold frost? Wish grandmothers, and mama were alive to see these videos of the garden...boy would they holler about the size and quantity, and they’d probably have good advice on things he had questions about growing.
@@aubieal0878 ... i can't be sure without going back to re-watch the video but I had the feeling it was "COMFREY".
Yes, Comfrey he planted to enrich the soil
This is one of my favorites videos on construction in this channel.
I LOVE THE DOG WITH THE TOY.. SHAWN JAMES YOU ARE THE BEST ,,,GOD BLESS YOU.
I see you have owls in the trees, why don’t you build a few owl houses with your excess lumber and put them about 10 feet off the ground on poles to control the mice and chipmunks eating you vegetables Shawn. My wife’s uncle and son did this on their ranches in California San Joaquin Valley to keep the rodents from eat their crops, and it worked. The owl houses don’t have to be that big just enough to accommodate one owl, with a round hole entrance. This is just a suggestion Shawn to protect your crops.
@Luis Rodriguez..... What an excellent suggestion. If it works it's a fabulous idea. @Shawn do you think that would work there for you ???? I'm kind of excited about the idea.
Great idea, I've never see owl boxes.
OH...that's a great idea !!
It's a 'win win,' for everyone and everything.
"Well... except the rodents." 😕
Owls are a hoot!🦉
a pcp air gun would be some fun and reduce the impact on said crops invasion , afternoons when they are active would be significant disencentive for em , have a bsa but there are many good brands , simple quiet and effective
It's cute how Cali wags her tail even when in the water.
This would be my ideal life...the garden, the dog, the woods, a man that is obviously intelligent, capable and hardworking.

Slowly but surely, you build a think that will last a lifetime or more. Watching you create the beams to slot together so well makes me appreciate the labor & skill required. It will be a thing of beauty buried & mostly unseen, but solid & valuable because it protects the food you work so hard to obtain.

Oh my gosh I was watching your video and when your barred owl hooted my dog jumped up ran to the window and gave a gruff bark- he thought it was our own barred owl that lives in our woods here! He’s still growling, wondering how that darned owl got into our house! 😂😂🤣
