1998...back when cars were designed so maintenance items like fuel filters could actually be replaced easily. Now you're dropping the gas tank and replacing the whole fuel sending unit just to replace the fuel filter!
Wish I still had one of my Saturns...sad to see that the rust is starting to get at yours. :(

Thank you! I just removed the FF from my 02 sl1 today. It's been cutting off while driving. Then won't restart for a while. I've replaced a ton of things and figured the filter should also be changed. I have to wait a day to replace it. This video helped a lot!

Unless you fuel up at the gas station with bad gas/pump filter and fill your car's tank with dirty gas.

Those connectors can be tricky.
Good little cars. My wife wrecked hers and insisted that we buy another just like it. They're getting scarcer. Found a jewel, but 100,000 miles, so wanted to replace the fuel filter. Thanks for the video!
Haha, posted the day I was doing this on my 97 (I'm so glad the 98 and later moved it out of the engine bay... was a nightmare maneuvering.
Something I learned: if you see a big leak by the fuel rail, check the little o-ring inside. For me, I tried shoving the clip and connector in at once and the o-ring wasn't sealing. Picking it back with a hex head solved it.
Just completed this job using a Purolator filter. The car threw a code "P0172 System Too Rich Bank 1". Come to realize that although the filter fits properly it doesn't have the built in pressure regulator. So thanks for that Purolator. Until I can find the Wix filter, should I just leave the Purolator in there or dig the old one out of the trash which is likely the original and put it back in? Will running the Purolator filter damage the engine?
Too much fuel pressure will cause your injectors to dump too much fuel. Aside from the terrible fuel economy you will also have trouble starting because your engine will be flooded with gas. Mine is doing that.
The fuel will then get to the oil and delute it. Also running too rich will ruin your catalytic converter.

Do not use the AutoZone filter for 15 dollars to try to save a buck. you will deeply regret it!! Your car will run rich burning out cat,spark plug,plug wires, and your car will lose power on acceleration, it can and will burn out your fuel pump,stall, rough shifting, rough idle misfires the works .. I'm guessing you can't find the Wix he's using in this video and if you did please tell me where I can get it. The reason information is so crucial for the 98 to 2002 S series is the fuel pressure regulator is built inside the filter. good luck trying to find That Wix in 2022. Took me forever searching through threads on the forum but I got there. I would like to save you time and money. Baldwin has the one that you need. I found mine today off rockauto For 43 dollars. My 98 sc1 is back to life and happy now. It's a huge difference in preformance.Thanks Rich!! Please Learn from me... don't just start throwing money into parts until you try this. if you have any of those symptoms above. Long live Saturn🖖

A nice update to your previous video Rich. My filter was changed 14 years ago at the dealer. I don't know if they had the foresight to put antiseize on those 2 bolts. I hope to tackle this on my '01 SC2 when the weather gets warmer. Thanks
Can a different filter than WIX 33731 cause a problem for the .Fuel Pump? I bought earlier PTC Fuel Filter, it works for Saturn 2001 SL2 (Amazon says), but many negative reviews on it. Thank you for the great film.
I'm wondering if changing my fuel filter will help my 2001 sc1. When I start my car it starts gurgling and trying to shut off. I have to push the gas until it stays started. Smoke comes flying out the exhaust.
Hey Rich, on a 99 sl2, would an emerging fuel filter issue show up on a diagnostic tool? I went to an O'Reilly store and borrowed theirs. Result: no code errors.

what i had done is remove to fuel line clip out both sides and slide the old filter out and slide the new one in never use a 10mm socket ?
Rich your video makes perfect sense. I have a 97 SL2 and I'm working on replacing the pump. However, when I get underneath the car, I don't see the filter as in your video.
I did remove the brake line but instead I just see lines and a massive cover where the filter would be. Any suggestions/thoughts?
If you follow the fuel line from the fuel rail you will see it. It is bolted to the frame. I jack up the car on the driver's side and access from behind the left front tire.
What were the symptoms
No symptoms on this one it was just time to replace it mileage wise.
i done the easy way just take the fuel clips of slide the filter out and leave the black housing right their done mine in less than 15 minntes . mine was under the master cylinder

No it is not the same filter as the 1991-1995 and the location is different.

Why does it cost so much to replace? I was quoted $502.00 a few days ago.

Shame they were mean on the plastic clips, but the job was done and after switching the ignition on and off a few times im sure it was all good :-D
After the ignition key was cycled on and off a few times she started up and ran fine.

Expencive Filter it's Got Pressure Regulator in it
My 2004 Ion doesn't have a visible dis-connect for the fuel line going from filter to engine. Not sure what to do about that. Found a video that shows mine. Scary job. I don't want to go an replace the darn fuel line. ua-cam.com/video/rYm0qcQXPdg/v-deo.html
