How *not* to change fuel filter (i.e. how i did it):
1) 1 hour of pulling on fuel lines, trying to figure out how the clamps work.
2) 1 hour of trying different household pliers, screwdrivers and whatnot to undo the clamps.
3) Fuel lines undone at last, drench everything around (yourself included) in petrol. Bonus points for petrol in eyes, mouth and any open wounds sustrained during point 2.
4) Inserting new filter real quick and suspiciously easy, expecting the car to catch fire for next week or so.
5) After surviving the one week period without any major fire and/or sudden fuel line defect, filter change can finally be called succesful.
you sir, are a real man
Did petrol taste as good as it smells?
I laughed my ass off when I read this. 1 hour of pulling on fuel lines OMG i'm glad your still with us
This is exactly how I expect it to go when I try it, lol.
🤣
I am a self taught mechanic and these videos are just great, I wish they would have been around some 10-15 years ago when I started playing with cars, they would have saved me a lot of headaches lol
+WQQKIE Awesome! I am glad the videos are helpful!
you learning everything from Christ fix 😅
@@for.w.07.20 don't be a fucking hater
Me too I suspect that my fuel filter is faulty it's cheap enough to try that first mechanics didn't relieve the pressure and it squirted all over they were doing a fuel pressure test they put it back together and it ran fine they don't know what was wrong next day it broke down and traffic and I had to pay $140 tow bill to bring it home so I'm going to replace a fuel filter cheapest place to start
I wish there was such thing as these videos 40 years ago trial and error on my old Ford's 302🤣
Oh my. Every 5 years? I’m doing a fuel filter for the first time on a 26 year old car
Volvo 240 time lol
Lol try a rusted out 92 s10 lol
Yeah.. I’m about to do the same.
1st time this weekend in a 30 yr old Oldsmobile
Same
8 years later, this video is still fresh. Other come close, but yours still tops it.
I've watched a lot of your videos and I just want to say you are easily one of the best car tutorial channels on here. Easy to understand, not too fast, and you have a video on almost any problem a car may have. Keep up the good work man.
For those with little to no mechanical knowledge your videos never disappoint. I learned so much about cars from you. Thank you so much
Yesterday car was sputtering decided i need a fuel filter, i havent done it in 200000 miles and today my favorite car guy on youtube post this, !!
+Dannie Jones ChrisFix senses were tingling! Good luck!

Dude, you ALWAYS publish the most user friendly, thorough, clear and explanatory automotive repair and maintenance content on UA-cam! Your content is beyond excellent!
you know i spent three weeks with my disabled 04 galant not knowing what was the problem with it, and im not taking it to a mechanic. thanks to you tho, i know what to do. thank you chris!
Thanks Chris! i finally tackled this demon and changed the fuel filter to my truck. thanks to you i was able safely remove my old fuel filter and and install a new one to my truck. so thanks again!
Awesome! I'm glad you were able to do it!
This is possibly the best channel on UA-cam. Always super informative, always clear and easy to follow, and it's obvious that you do your research and know what you're talking about. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
+F3Ibane Thanks a lot!I really appreciate the feedback and support.
you're very helping me..I'm from Indonesia (Bali). Thank you, I like all of your tutorial about maintaining and fixing car
I just did this on my '82 VW Rabbit and it worked great! I'm really impressed at how the acceleration improved! Even when downshifting the engine runs noticeably smoother. For $13 (cost of the Bosch filter), that's the best bang for the bucks I could get! :D Also, the trick of removing the fuel pump relay was smart, I only got about 1 tablespoon of gas spilled!
The only unexpected thing I had was that, after changing the filter, even after turning the key to the ON position for a few seconds, I had trouble starting the engine, I had to press the gas pedal for the engine to start. I guess there was air in the filter, because after a 20 minutes ride, the car restarted without any problem.
Thanks a lot +ChrisFix your videos have the most useful content and are very fun to watch! :)
Your videos are so thorough and clear! Such a great job, well done man!
+Djembe Numuya Thanks a lot man!

+Fuzion180 Thanks a lot man!
Fuzion180 you are right
After 4 years, this guy’s a Enterprise! 🎖
Agreed!
Great video, Chris! Very clearly explained with detailed visuals, good technique, and some really clever tips! Thanks for making this.
Thanks so much for this. First time I've had to remove a fuel filter today and I think the original had been left on the car it's whole life! (19 years). Absolute nightmare I was about to give up on until I found this vid and you mentioned the hook/toothpick idea. After a bit of brute force and jiggery pokery - she's off and the new one's in! Also renewed the screws and nuts holding it on (thanks to my mate with a jar of PC spares) as the originals were so ancient. The tool we used wasn't perfect and we slightly damaged the end of the fuel hoses getting them off, but with the new retaining things on nice and tight it doesn't seem to have had any ill effects. I'm gonna invest in a hook tool for this purpose now! Thanks again!
Chris, another great video. Your approach and methods are just perfect and very informative. Thanks.
+Bourne Accident Thanks a lot man! I really appreciate the feedback!
+ChrisFix I missed the point, when You said that changing diesel fuel filter works in different way. You should just do video on a car with diesel engine.
ChrisFix you and Scotty should do Top Gear

I’m changing mine tomorrow:). You are the boss
Awesome! Good luck!
Hey thank you for your videos. I learned a lot from you and changed my water pump, spark plugs and wires, vent solenoid, wheel bearings, brake calipers, brake pads, rotors, throttle body, bleed brake fluid, changed my coolant, changed my accelerator pedal sensor, changed my wheel speed sensor, and now I'm getting ready to change my fuel filter. You save me well over $3,000 so far. THANK YOU!! Oh, I'm not a mechanic and I never worked on cars before. 💯🎯
Hey chris, I know this is an old video, but I just changed my fuel filter as well on my bmw e39 528i from 97. Absolutely having a ball changing things on my car, especially to get the consumption down, and to make my car last longer. Thnx for all your video’s. Now it’s up to the power steering and automatic transmission. Super excited!

You sure have gained lot of subscribers in relatively short time, and it's no wonder... your videos are so educating and simple. I showed your channel to a friend of mine who had never done anything to his car and so far he has fixed his rims, headlights and done about full service with the help of your videos :D keep it up!
+Jimbow AWESOME! That is what I like to hear! Thanks for sharing my channel! It is subscribers like yourself that contribute to the great success my channel has had! Your support is greatly appreciated!
Your videos are great. My brother refuses to take his vehicles to a mechanic. He has had vehicles that would have an issue and he would change parts to try and find which part is bad. He would sometimes find the problem right away and other times he would spend a lot on replacing several parts before finding the problem. There are some things he has to let a mechanic do, but he always try’s to figure it out himself. I told him to watch your videos. He drive trackor trailer and is home one weekend a month and so his truck sits most of the time, I would be surprised if he puts more then 500 miles a year on it. His biggest issue is regular maintenance. He believes that since it sits so much that he doesn’t need to do regular maintenance on it. I just told him to watch your videos, he could learn a lot.
Chris I love you videos I live in Florida I've always had mechanic friends at fix my trucks I can change spark plugs and stuff on older vehicles but now these computer stuff just anyway you help with that too anyway you explain things so simple thank you I wished all the UA-camrs were concerned with helping others like you are thank you sir I could tell your parents raised you right

+Zaeem Khichi Thanks a lot man! Let me know how your replacement goes!
it went awesome. replaced the filter it was dirty. i was facing rough idling but now its very smooth. thanx again :)
I haven't even been subscribed for a whole day and I've already watched about 20 of your videos.

Thanks for the great video, I have been trying to change the fuel filter for quite a while using the so called quick disconnect tools. To make long story short, your video gave me the insight and knowledge to finally accomplish the task.
+tascenzo1 Awesome! Glad the video was helpful!
Thanks for the video
+canchume No problem!
Great video as usual =] My one suggestion is that next time you explain how to loosen the hoses with pliers (when necessary), please be sure to also emphasize caution when twisting and applying pressure - because sometimes you can break/crack the hose (as I'm sure you know). Thanks!
If the hose cracks, it's probably time to change out the hose anyways
+Ninjar Thanks and thanks for the tip! As Take 1 Films said, if it cracks, it is time for a new one anyhow!
Thanks man. I really like your clear, easy to follow walkthroughs. I learned a few things here. +1
+Ruscello Twitch Thanks a lot and I am glad you learned something new!
I was literally thinking about changing my filter yesterday and thought if you'd made a video about it yet. Thanks for making these.
+topcatti360 haha, perfect and no problem!
You don't need a special tool for the Ford style. Plenty of DIY vids on making it from a Sharpie pen cap.
So a special tool then, just one you make yourself?

THE BEST! Everyone else's video has the fuel filter out already which is completely useless .. thanks C.F!
Thanks for making this video man, this worked perfectly for my Nissan Pulsar SRV serie 97. it couldn't of went any smoother.
On some cars the fuel filter is integral to the fuel tank. They generally last the life of the vehicle, assuming your area has clean fuel.
Meanwhile my car has a fuel filter that needs to be replaced inside the as tank
German Engineering™
Hi Chris,
Why would you need to change fuel filter if you have used one of those cleaning products you showed in the video?
Thanks
Those additives don't clean filters just all the gunk in your fuel system. I was dumb enough and forgot to replace my filter when i just put gumout I'm buying a new one today
I like this guys speech, easy to understand and explains everything properly.
Thanks
your channel has made AMAZING progress! youve improved so much, i suggest if you start to run out of video ideas, re-do some old ones! because you know so much better camera angles now and amazing sound and video quality! ive learned a lot from both you and scotty combined!
+Brad Stewart Thanks a lot Brad! I noticed that too after watching some of my older videos! For now I will not be running out of video ideas for a long time lol. But there is always opportunity to make better older videos!
Another Great Video, but what about a Diesel filter? ;)
Diesel is similar but the air needs to be bled out. I wish I had a diesel car to work on.
+Paul Wilkinson diesel filters are the similar as Chris said but the fuel line needs to be bleed out depending on how quick and how much fuel you lost during the change. Some vehicles have come with such bleeders from factory but a bleeding kit should be cheep
+ChrisFix my f250 has two fuel filters. one in the engine bay, and another inside the pump. you have to take the pump apart to get to that one.
+Paul Wilkinson - The filter in a diesel engine is even more important than a gas engine. Mainly because people neglect it, and there are more gelatinous bits of crud in diesel fuel than gas. They are generally recommended to be changed twice as often as a gas filter. More times than I can count, I've miraculously made a diesel-engined truck suddenly run like new because I replaces the filter. People tend to neglect it, and it gets all clogged up with crud. If you've never changed your filter on a diesel engine, go change it whether it needs it or not. Then write down the mileage on the filter itself with a permanent marker, and the date. And write it in the book. Then change it regularly, as recommended.
i change mine every 10k miles, or about every other oil change per the owners book recommends.
On my old civic, you had to remove the center console to get to the fuel tank where the fuel filter was.
Ugh, they don't make it easy do they?
+ChrisFix
Not on my civic hatch no, to change a front blinker/turn signal you had to remove the wheel well trim, to change the front fog lights you had to drop the bumper.
But the car looked like a UFO which was awesome.
+IIGrayfoxII Why would you want your car to look like a UFO? Its a car....
Changed my 1996 Nissan 200sx fuel filter with 155k miles - first time. This video was very helpful.
Your videos are always super helpful and it really help that I have a 2001 Ford ranger. Keep it up man!
+doopy Awesome! You are going to love the next fuel filter video then!
If this doesn't work then you got a Volkswagen lol
+Angel Derbessy i havnt watched the video yet, and first comment i see is this. i have a 01 vw jetta :(
+Angel Derbessy hahaha, so I have heard!
Lol sorry for those that have a vw but the joke was kinda there

+Angel Derbessy ha ha nice :)

Love watching these kind of videos very helpful I understand now!! Im very interested in cars but unfortunately my dad was never interested in teaching me anything so thanks you !
I am glad the videos are helpful and interesting!!! That is great I can teach you something you want to learn!
Ahh man I'm so glad I found u on UA-cam. Thank u so much for making videos for us
+phillip arsenault I am glad too! Im glad you are learning a lot bud!
ohhhh, mr fix wears safety goggles huh? well you wouldn't have to wear those glasses if you changed the filter with your TONGUE!!! hahaha sorry bro I just needed to bust yer balls cuz I cant ever find anything to complain about in yer vids. BTW I loved the recycling vid you did. that was a very important vid imo. thanks bro
Haha, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos!
Any plans to make a video on the Toyota's? They have the freaking fuel filter inside the tank. Thanks though
+Rounak Gandhi ugh, that is annoying. I will see if I can find a Toyota that needs a fuel filter change!
ChrisFix Thanks
+Rounak Gandhi I think most modern cars do. In some there is access hole below rear seat, then the job isn't too bad. In others you'd need to drop a tank :/
+Rounak Gandhi I've done a few it's not fun. Most times you can get to it under the rear seat but you'll need a special tool to get the securing ring securing the sender unit to the tank. Then you have to partly dismantle the sender unit to replace the filter and put it all back together.
depending on the type of Toyota/lexus vehicle. the fuel filter can not be changed because it's part of the fuel pump it's self unless you replace the whole fuel pump. the fuel filter is a life time filter and should not need To be replaced unless you are experiencing some problems like if your car won't start that would be the only reason on changing it I own a 2001 lexus is300 and like I said to replace the fuel filter you have to replace it with a new fuel pump so if its not causing any problems don't even worry about changing it
Just changed my fuel filter yesterday on my 1997 Suzuki Baleno 1.8L and nothing exploded. So thanks for the tips. It was easy but I was still concerned that I might mess it up but I took my time and it went flawlessly.
Awesome channel! Thanks for sharing this with us! You are doing a great job! Really hope that your channel will grow a lot!
+Ich bins THanks a lot! I am glad you like the channel and I appreciate the support!
Yeah my car is at 222k miles on the original
Time to replace it haha
OPEN the old one and see what it looks like inside !!!!!!!!!!1
+Pie 4life Cutting one open can be dangerous as the paper part inside usually catches fire in the process of cutting the metal case open. (I've done it- that paper burns for a LONG TIME) They are typically paper folds like an air filter or the inside of a oil filter. Many modern cars have a paper oil filter or cartridge type. This is basically what the guts of a fuel filter look like.
+Pie 4life I am cutting them open dont you worry! My van has the original fuel filter with 300k miles on it!!! I will also do my Vette which is well maintained and has 30k miles on it, and the truck which has 130k miles.
+briansmobile1 I am going to use a hack saw so there are no sparks. Probably gonna take forever tho!
ChrisFix Try to use some cutters on it and just cut the metal
+ChrisFix yeah I wonder how thick the metal casing is.. it could be pretty thin in older ones but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a regulation about how thin they can be, since in a crash they basically throw a fistful of gas on the impact if they are compromised.
Helpful and informative as always Chris!! Thank you
+Michael S Thanks Michael!
I really thank you chris for spending your time on making video's and learning me stuff

Chris I'm back yet again with another video suggestion! lol I was searching UA-cam for a how to on "tune ups" and could not find a good tutorial on it. Your videos are the most in depth and you seem to be one of the best, you should do a tutorial video on how to do a proper and thorough tune up. I'd like to see one that covers how to determine error codes n stuff and how to find out what they mean to each specific vehical.
+no name Those are awesome suggestions! I like it!
UA-cam really needs a channel like yours that teaches how to service diesels, so if you ever buy one in the future, please upload anything you do to it!
Will do!

You are the best!!! I have to change my mom's fuel filter soon. You inspire me to take cars on instead of believing I should leave it to the boys.
i literally just watch your videos to pass spare time haha. i love learning about all this stuff. hurry up with the ford fuel filter change because i really wanna watch it. im getting a ford bronco in a week and wanna change all the old shit on it and thats one of the things i wanna change. i know i could easily figure out how to change it my self but i still love watching your bids :p

Looking forward to your Ford fuel filter change vid. I have a Mazda b3000 the only difference it is a single line out and in, but it does have the quick disconnect fitting which requires that tool you showed in this video. Nice work on the videos and thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise.
+Skiman21632 If it is a single in and out, it will be even easier so stay tuned! Thanks a lot man!

Great video Chris-Fix. I need to get that "dental pick". Keep up the great work.
+John Santa Cruz Yea, it is a great tool to have for removing hoses! (Link in the description for a decent set)
Your videos motivate me sometimes. The one on my Mazda is over due and I've been putting it off. I didn't realize how cheap they were so I bought mine today. Not looking forward to dealing with the quick disconnects. I had enough of those when I installed a/c on the truck.
+Spring794 Stay tuned because I will be doing the video on the mazda very soon! It is really easy so dont worry!
I changed mine today. The quick disconnects weren't bad at all, I guess its just the a/c ones that are a pain.
Thanks !!!! Just changed mines ! Great video
been waiting for this video for so long! Thanks for the video. Could you also show us how to change the in tank ones too? Its hard to find those on youtube. :)
+Ayyub Attia AWESOME! You are going to get 3 more awesome fuel filter videos soon as well!

Thanks a lot man. These videos are priceless
This is a new one well explained video, thanks a lot !
I am expecting for the next.
+R Flores Thanks! I am glad you liked it!
I just wanted to confirm... I just replaced the fuel filter on my BNR32 GTR 1992 Nissan Skyline, and the HOT RAG trick does work, surprisingly well. I first pulled the fuel pump fuse from under the steering column, then attempted to start the car. Once that was done and the fuel somewhat purged, I disconnected the battery, located the fuel pump, unscrewed the clamp and attempted to pull off the hose but it was on there TIGHT. I read that a hot rag would help get it off, but I didn't believe it. I actually grabbed a hair dryer as I was going to use it as a sudo-heat gun... however, I ran a cloth under some really hot water just to give it a shot, came out, applied the rag to those, held it there really tight all the way around for about 10 seconds, then twisted and pulled and it came off rather easily, with light to medium force and a slight twist it came right off. I'd say be prepared with an additional rag or two to soak up the little bit gas that spills out and don't let go of the hose or it will throw more. Repeat with the bottom hose the same way (hot rag trick) but place some extra rags underneath,, it comes off easier but also leaks quite a bit more. I placed a rag over the open hoses, the fumes are not fun, they give you a headache after a minute or two. I put the new filter in reverse order, checked for leaks, put the fuse back in, then primed the fuel pump 2-3 times and it started right up no problem. Then I did another check for leaks, took it on a test drive (to my surprise there was a noticeable difference in response and even sound). Thanks for the video Chris Fix, excellent production as always.
CQ filter! Nice! Representing the workplace haha
