The issue with the heavy oils and butters is that a lot of people were overdoing it and using too much while also not shampooing weekly

I think it’s important that we all listen to our hair, just as we listen to our body. My hair likes various oils, as long as I don’t over-do it. I just go with whatever works. Ironically, my hair doesn’t react well with coconut oil. 😂

I agree. Let's face it these influencer who claim to be stylist or not are lazy, they do not want to shampoo any head that uses heavy oils or butter. I feel if you are paying a stylist their fee plus a generous tip, you need to be quiet. Use a good clarifying shampoo and if necessary dawn to get out excessive oils and butters on the hair. These stylist who complain don't want to use extra product to wash an oily head.

Yes a scalp oil video soon would be great! I have a question for that of us that suffer from sebhorreic dermatitis. Washing our scalps often is the best practice, but that’s so hard on the hair. Would love to hear your thoughts on whether it would be best to wash frequently with our treatment shampoos, but use coconut oil on the hair first to protect it, or wash less frequently, but use some scalp oils that can help with the yeast. I’ve been reading a lot about borage oil and I’m curious to try it specifically.

As a preface, I don't have very curly hair. My hair is oily and holds whatever shape it dries in, so that could be rather tight curls, or it could be rather straight. So I don't have much experience with dry curly hair, but I do have experience with Seb Derm.
When it comes to Seb Derm, nearly any natural oil will exasperate it. The yeast feeds on oils. If your Seb Derm is flaring bad, avoid using oils until you get it under control. Your skin is a living organ and serves a very important purpose. It is best to prioritize it's health.
When it comes to everyday care of your scalp and hair, use the medicated shampoo as needed. When flaring, it might be every couple of days or every day. When under control, it could be as little as once every couple of weeks or once a month. Or it could be anything in-between. Prescription shampoos work best, but store bought ones aren't a bad alternative if you don't have access. Just keep an eye on ingredients. Some care more for marketing and sales than your health.
When not using the medicated shampoo, use a very gentle shampoo instead. I use Vanicream's. When buying a conditioner, avoid ones with oils known to exasperate Seb Derm. Coconut oil is one of those, sadly. Also read the ingredients for any other product you may use, like styling gels, clarifying shampoos, etc.
The national excema association has a list of accepted products on their site. None of those products will feed the yeast. They don't have all types of products included though.
Also, avoid anything that irritates your skin. For example, I learned that I am allergic to sulfates. Using things you are allergic to, even if only mildly, will likely make your seb derm worse.
While I hate to say it, if you want to use oils when you have Seb Derm, you have to accept that it will feed the problem. While some people can manage their Seb Derm well enough to allow the use of some oils, some cannot. If the latter is you and you still want to use oils, I strongly advise against using them around your scalp if you can.
And if worse comes to worse and you aren't attached to your hair, Seb Derm is easier to care for when hair is short. (In my experience anyway). I completely understand this isn't for everyone. It's just something I realized because I'm prone to cutting my hair into a pixie on a whim and then growing it out a couple of years later when I get bored with it. My Seb Derm is easier to manage with the pixie.
This all being said, I'm not a dermatologist. This is all from my own personal experience. If your Seb Derm is a serious concern for you, I'd strongly suggest seeing a doctor. I didn't even need to see a dermatologist to get my prescription. My GP handled it. If you do see a dermatologist, they'd be able to recommend safe products to you.

@@EllaBella-76 So I think there may be a language or dialect barrier here, because I admittedly had a hard time reading your comment. If I understood correctly, you are using Castor oil and a Shea beauty shampoo.
If your son's Seb Derm is under control, then I'm happy for you! It can be difficult getting there. I think my mom cried on occasion when mine flared when I was young too. I cried too when she had to treat it because my scalp was in pain. It was rough. You definitely aren't alone in that experience.
If your son still struggles with it, I do have to warn that Shea butter, castor oil, coconut oil, and many other oil based ingredients found in Shea beauty products make Seb Derm worse. Any evidence towards the contrary is anecdotal, as there as been no concrete evidence that any of these ingredients help Seb Derm. However, there is strong reason to believe that they make it worse as the yeast feeds on them. Problem oils can help with the look of dryness that Seb Derm creates at a surface level, but they will most likely make the condition worse over time, including the dryness. At least this is the leading theory by experts right now, as far as I know.
From what I understand, Seb Derm skin is dry because it lacks water, not oils. The skin lacks water because the skin is damaged by the excess of yeast. The skin can't retain it's moisture as well when damaged. This yeast feeds on oils. So the more oils the Seb Derm has, the more yeast there will be, and the more damaged the skin will become.
When Seb Derm flares, the idea is to starve the yeast and target it with an antifungal. That means no added oils, and using an active ingredient like ketoconazole. This has been the proven way to help it.
Again, if your son's Seb Derm is being well managed, then ignore everything I said. Just thought I would share just in case.
And for some semi-related information I am tacking on just in case someone needs to hear it: not everything we consider dandruff in layman's terms is Seb Derm. Dry skin can cause flakes too. The flakes look different, but it is easy to confuse if you don't know the difference. The two are treated in rather opposite ways, so it's an important distinction to make before treating it.

      @Mrs.Buttercup_ Рік тому +5

Tsal or something with salicylic acid helps exfoliate the scalp and cut down on flakiness. Once I got my scalp under control I dont have to use salicylic acid as much. Products like head& shoulders, and selsun blue only helped relieve my flakiness for the first initial washes. Using them constantly made my scalp worse. I started getting patches that were drier and came off in chunks leaving my scalp raw.
I use castor oil to help my scalp as well. A little goes a long way.

I'm not quite sure when the myth that oils are moisturizing came into being but somehow it took off and I think that's what confused everybody. I've only known oils to be penetrative or sealing. Then one day a couple years ago I was seeing all the girls getting upset and telling everybody not to put oil in their hair anymore.
I also agree with the idea that people were not cleaning their hair enough and that's what was causing the problem. There are people to this day that shampoo their hair once every month whether they have extensions, a weave, whatever. So they're steady putting all these heavy oils and butters in on their hair and literally never cleaning it off. Then, when they finally do wash their hair, not only are they shedding a bunch of hair but it's dry and fragile and breaking off. And they never seem to connect the fact that they haven't moisturize their hair in literally a month. I also think that people don't pay attention to the different sections of their hair and take care of how they treat it. The roots are the strongest they're brand-new, the mid is slightly weaker, and your ends are the most frail and need the most care. My mom taught me this over thirty years ago and I followed it ever since. Never had any issues with my hair.
It's not the oils and butters y'all, it's your strategies and your methods that are off.

    • @verreal
      @verreal Рік тому

Well, it makes sense because oil blocks water, it's hydrophobic. But is that a seal? Aha. Also, it seems to soak in and is shiny. Just put some linseed oil on your antique furniture and you'll be amazed. So it looks moisturized.

@@verreal well Furniture is not your hair. Hair is soft and malleable and is always changing furniture is pretty much finished, unless it needs occasional repair work. I think people often want easy and simple solutions, which often causes them to flip flop to the latest greatest strategy without a lot of critical thought, and use that in excess. It's why there are so many people that have excess amount of products in their cabinets. They're looking for that magic solution when the magic solution is it consistent regimen and consulting with professionals.

Idk about butters but oils are supposed to lock in whatever moisture you have. It can also be used for your scalp right before a deep clean or as a protective ingredient for the weather or what not. Second, I started washing my hair more often ( before i did once a week, now twice) and I’ve notice my scalp is actually itching when before it didn’t. I think it should be that my scalp is dry ( currently surviving canadian winter) but I have no idea what to do about it. How do you hydrate the scalp? I am using an everyday shampoo and conditioner with no sulfates neither silicones ( I do love sulfates and silicones) but maybe these are too harsh for me to use often? I was also wondering could I add something to my shampoo and conditioner so that I can still use them? Sorry for the long message haha but thank you for all the help and sense of humor!

Excellent info Mel. I’m not a stylist but I’ve made mistakes by using water as a moisturizer - like split ends. Your advice is absolutely true. I live in a cold climate now and I use those oils and working on strengthening my hair again. - I’m from the Caribbean, stylists advise against using water. They recommend oil. Lots of love.❤️

This was very useful! I have high porosity hair and many times in curly and wavy groups I'm being told I shouldn't use oils by so many people. But my hair needs certain oils from all the damage! Next time I'll just share this video.
Also I definitely want a video on scalp oils - as someone who has a dry scalp with psoriasis I think it'll really benefit me.

Bruh, as a high porosity curlie, I oil after the final rinse, oil after moisturising as a sealant and pre-poo with an oil.
I find butters and grease as more difficult to get out of my hair than oil. And I *have* to 'remoisturise' my hair twice a week.

Omg. Thank you for being so informative! When I first got into CGM, I was watching a video about scalp health. They got an up-close view of different people's scalps, of different hair types and that washed their hair different amounts. The lady doing the...study? Video? Asked one of the women, "What about oils? How often do you condition your scalp?" The woman asked, "What does that even mean?" And the lady doing the video said, "Exactly." And then never answered the question!

I'm in Australia too. What products do you use? I feel like I can't find products that do what I want them to do or I'm just doing everything wrong, even though I wash, condition, add a leave in, then gel. I feel like having curly hair is too hard. 😩

@@rhiannon14982 hello! I was using Clever Curl for a long while. Beautiful products, but I started to feel build up in my hair because I was never clarifying. So I have just bought the Davroe curly range and am also going to try the Evo curly range. Both are Australian brands (a tad pricey) but so far the Davroe curl creme is nice and has good hold. I was also told that Aveda have a nice curl creme and 'gelee'. So far, with the denman brush and curl twist techniques that Mell has showed, it seems to give a good result.. Hope that helps!

@@rhiannon14982 ooh also, you MUST get your hands on the Davroe CURLiCUE Hydrating Hair Oil!
My curls don't tend to last many days, even with a bonnet (I'm still working on product amount).. But I add this mid week and it tames frizz and smells amazing!! So even though my hairs aren't curly anymore, it becomes more like a wave with reduced frizz which I am super happy with having before thw next wash day..

You're my ride or die hair gal Mel! Im an OG subscriber, and today my hair was puffy and not as curly due to me not refreshing with product and humidity. I did a Conditioning treatment, and I decided to try LOG method. (leave-in conditioner, oil, and gel.) I am wet plopping at the moment, but I have to say my hair looked great after scrunching in the gel, and I had less wet frizz (Ive been plagued with this for months, I live in Northern MN (hello my Canadian neighbor) and it seems no matter what conditioner I squish in or curl cream or leave in I use that I see wet frizz on one side of my front hair.
