off topic but can we talk about why salons charge WAY more for a “curly cut” it feels like discrimination or something idk 😭 ??? like why are we charging people born with curly hair more?? i read an article (2019) that said approx 65 percent of the U.S. population has curly, coily or wavy hair so why isn’t everyone trained to cut this hair type?
I am not a professional stylist, but I think this is an issue of supply vs. demand. A lot of stylists just don't know how to cut hair if it's not straight, or maybe they are cutting it using straight hair techniques. Now that more women are rocking texture and waves, perhaps this will change.
It does take more time and effort. Even to comb out and definitely to maintain. I know because I do my own and have cousins with minimally curly hair who can style it with much less effort. Curly hair breaks much easier as well and if very tightly coiled is even more brittle.
I thought the same thing. I paid for a haircut by someone who knew how to cut curly hair and was charged like $165 for it. Just the cut! And he RUINED my curls because he went ham with the slice and cut crap. I understand supply and demand but for a service that requires a comb and scissors just like any other haircut it seems unfair. Soo I’m not a specialist but I do have 2c hair and here’s my tips: 1. No, you do not, and should not use a regular conditioner immediately after you deep condition. Deep conditioning replaces the regular conditioner and offers deeper, more intense moisture 2. Some curlies do leave some conditioner in their hair instead of using a leave in conditioner. I’m not entirely sure if this is recommended or not but I have heard of people doing that

I would like to add that the minimum products you should have include a good clarifying shampoo (can be used as your every wash shampoo if you wash like once a week), a good hair mask (in place of a regular conditioner), a good leave on cream (leave on conditioner, curl cream, a cream-gel hybrid or a conditioner that can be used as a leave in like the curlsmith one) and an oil. You can make do and have good looking/feeling and healthy hair with few resources. You don't have to have a million products.

Love what you said about low-porosity hair being quite rare. It's especially uncommon in curly hair. So much misinformation about porosity out there and so many people that believe their hair to be low-porosity when it's clearly not.
I’m making a whole video on this because the odds of curly hair being low porosity is so low. I can see the porosity from here!! Some people make their hair super hydrophobic via the products they use but that’s buildup!
@@ManesByMell Yes! I'm always trying to explain this to curly people online but I meet with some disbelief. After that vid comes out I'll just link to it instead... they'll find you more convincing, I'm sure.
I know, right? I always had the assumption that course. hair was lower porosity. I feel like I have coarse hair in my hair gets wet pretty easily. Or maybe my hair isn’t coarse. I have no idea that’s another thing I think people get confused about his fine hair/coarse hair.
Heleen Kibbelaar @sciencemeetscosmetics did a great podcast with @theecowell (Canadian cosmetic chemist) that touched on this; you need advanced lab equipment to figure out porosity
Loved the video! Please do a video on the science of hair porosity! I've always thought that I had low porosity hair, but now I have so many questions because I've never heard someone say that its rare.
Conditioning products! Conditioners, leave-ins, creams. They're what smooth and fill in the gaps in your cuticles and gives us what we percieve to be "moisturised" hair. Obviously, they need a certain amount to water to work properly, but it's not the water itself that moisturises our hair.
@@natalies4751 Yup conditioning products trap the water that's on the hair from evaporating as quickly. If she would have said water alone that would have been better but I agree with everything else she said.
Wow. I've never wanted to have a video become a class. I wish you had some way of numbering and labeling these tips so we can watch the full video. Thank you for this.
The end left me feeling better. After losing my tight Arby curly fry ringlets because of the hormones from having kids, I got my hair permed 3 years in a row. It's never looked the same, felt the same, or could be styled the same. I've decided to grow it out and come to grips with my looser curls.
I love your videos. I would love to see a video for women in their 40’s and have grey hair. My curl pattern is different for my grey hair vs my non-grey hair.
Yes, please! I second this. I would LOVE a video on how to care for grey curls and especially how to deal as hair is transitioning to grey. The mix of needs on my head right now is a lot to sort out.
The darker color looks so good on you! I had a balayage on my hair in 2020 and it was soo much harder to make my hair look healthy. Now I went back to black/dark brown (my natural color) and it looks so much better and healthier. I love that you did the same thing :D
The hormone thing is 100% true I was born with pin straight hair. After my period came I noticed my hair started growing frizzy now I have cork screw curls
I went to the derm and she said I have seborrheic dermatitis and she put me on a medicated shampoo. Since then my curls have been incredibly weighed down and stretched out. But that’s something I’m willing to deal with because my hair is really soft AND my scalp doesn’t itch incessantly anymore.
My hair change was due to the no/low poo. It went from medium, bright, dense, 3a/3b curls (from root) to fine, opaque, low density, 2b/2c/3a mess with hair loss. I went back to my old routine after 7 years of no poo and I got most of it in order, save my hair isn't curling from roots anymore. It was my fault because by the first month of no/low poo, my hair was already behaving strangely, but I kept going on because of the hype. I sure was doing something wrong and the hair had to get used to the new regime. I changed brands, but turns out it was the no/low poo. I love my sulfate and silicones. Now it is changing again because menopause, but at least this I can't control. I do need desesperately to drink more water. Usually I drink around 1.5L when it should be atleast 2L and, if considering my weight, it must be at least 3L. I prefer wet cuts.
Omg THANK YOU FOR THIS SOOOOOOO MANY of us need this. Really... seriously......having a looser texture doesn't make us less beautiful. I live this video. As all of your amazing videos. Thank you Mell!!!

Wow, that’s a lot of information in 10 minutes. I’m going to watch it again. Had to take a lot of editing. So much with your videos. I going to watch that dry vs wet haircut. Love you guys!
WHOA... baby hairs don't grow out? I did know a lot of these, but I did not know that one. I've even had hairdressers comment saying something like "oh you have all these baby hairs, you're getting more hair growth" so I believed that. Wow!
this is so good! i appreciate what curly & natural hair influencers have taught us, but some of that ish was just straight up wrong lol. and that's ok, our hair improved regardless. but we can stop now haha.
I have done my own hair since I was 17, seeing stylists only occasionally. I know everything you say is totally true! If you have any connections with a Black dermatologist, could you feature one on your videos to pump up the credibility for Afro- American (including women of Afro-Latina and Caribbean descent) who are suffering much hair loss and many health issues to the myth of their hair care routine requiring masses of attached extensions and "weave", way to much product and infrequent shampooing.
Your hair care routine needs to work for your biology AND your environment/lifestyle. Just because your hair is type 4 doesn't mean your situation is the same as another type 4. Afro hair isn't used to high humidity climates and probably needs more washing than if you lived in a drier climate.
O.M.G.!!! Just got my verb curl foam gel and it is freaking amazing!!!!!!! I've followed you for a long time now but daaannggg! I LOVE this product!!!! Thank you so much!!!!
If you’re someone that sweats pretty much everyday, talking like drenched (I’m a dancer), what is the best way to take care of your curls? Should I wash more often or let the sweat air dry and dry shampoo? Afraid of over washing it but also don’t know what’s actually best
I came to ask the same question! I work out most days, and I SWEAT! I've got a few good techniques for a refresh, but should I be doing more for my scalp between washes?
One thing I can suggest is using dry shampoo after your wash days on clean dry hair BEFORE you work out, that’s how dry shampoo is supposed to be used. It goes on clean hair so when you do sweat it prevents the hair from getting oily and whatnot vs using it after and the dry shampoo have to work extra hard to combat the sweat and oil (preventative vs reactive). You also will use more of it after your hair is all oily and whatnot compared to spraying your hair and scalp when it’s clean as a preventative measure. Hope this makes sense.
THANK YOU! None of those truths were hard for me because I'm trying to get people to see them all the time. Especially the last few you said. Happy Holidays 🙂
It was shown to be as effective as 2% minoxidil when most people use 5%. Also studies can be wrong, the researchers can repeat the study over and over until they get the result they are paid for by lobbyists. Be careful and always be suspicious
it's very difficult to accept the effects hormones can have. I went through something four years ago. My hair, wich used to be gloriously wavy, started to straighten. Today, it's almost straight, but with a wooly texture. If you look at one strand at a time, you'll notice there's some kink to them. Still, they won't clump for anything in this world. It's become incredibly low porosity. I was expecting to see whites, but not a single one in view, just... this weird texture. My hair used to feel like a crown, now it's a scar, one that everyone can see. I'm trying to take good care of myself, hoping it will go back to what it used to be. It's incredible how little power we have over stress.
Hey, Mell ! Thank you for this video and thanks for pointing out you don't need straight hair to be beautiful. I have struggled a lot with that and most days I just wonder- cant I be normal and have normal hair, like most of the girls... PS. Argentina is going to win for sure!
This was another amazing journey! I'm new to the curl world... my whole life I thought my hair was just frizzy and heard about plopping on a game show and thought that would be a faster way of drying. Had NO CLUE I had curly hair. Needless to say, I had a head full of curls after plopping and have spent the last couple of months trying to figure out what to do with this mop. I LOVE your channel and have been watching all of your videos. I think the thing I struggle with most is finding a balance between products. I put too little in and I get frizz galore in just a day or two. So I followed one of your videos and finally got the volume I was looking for since my hair is normally limp curls. But now I'm dealing with icky feeling hair. I think from too much product. Ugh The struggle is REAL. :)
Increased DHT after a workout is important to know. I've already been washing on workout days so I'm happy to know that was a good habit to start. Have you done a video on how to use silicones the right way? I've just been avoiding them thinking they won't wash out properly. Love your videos. 💕
Agreed! I would love to learn more about silicones and how they work. I would like to start using them because Ive heard theres lots of ways they are good for your hair, but it's so hard to find information about them!
Most of this is commonsense. Many women, especially Afro- American women, have been taught that checking the scalp and hair full of oil is the way to make it healthy and grow. I am Afro- American and always knew this could trap allergens and bacteria in the scalp causing it to itch and shed, and will definitely contribute to baldness. Ergo, failure to shampoo, preferably at least once a week, at least every two weeks, as pointed out in this video (with our steadily warming climate) can cause serious dermatological scalp issues and huge problems, including fungi and other microscopic parasites. Further, the very hair solutions that the beauty industry sells women of African descent , namely masses of false hair or tight false or natural braids woven onto the scalp tightly and are not only NOT PROTECTIVE,, but will result in early and permanent hair loss. I am a senior and still have hair that has maybe 10 trands of gray ( genetic), requires no dye , and is thick and grows rapidly. I read dermatological journals but avoid " hair stylists" like the plague. I definitely avoid gunking my scalp with product.
Oooh. I got to “water does not moisturize your hair” and had to stop and ask, huhhhhh???? Please explain. I thought water is the main source of moisture for your hair. I’m lost Mel. Please explain. ❤️
@@-...................- So my understanding was that moisture can only come from one source and that source is water. Anything else that we use either seals in water, replaces water (like on a refresh day) or provide nourishment and conditioning. But moisture comes from water and products that have water content. Have I been wrong all these years?
I love you and yes, one of these things was hard for me to hear. Since I started doing a final rinse with cold water and letting me hair air dry or defuse with low heat setting, my hair has no more frizz (only using the LUS all in one leave in conditioner). If I rinse with warm or hot water, I’m going to have frizz. I’m sticking with the cold final rinse and will always continue to watch and support you.
Just so you know, LUS now has a hair gel and a scalp serum. They've also had a hair oil and a hair perfume for a few years now as well. LUS has never said that you should only use just their leave-in and ignore other products, it's simply marketed as you CAN use one product IF YOU WANT, because some of us are either lazy or don't have enough time to always use more than one styling product. I use LUS and have for years, and I've sometimes used it alone, but I usually pair it with a gel (I used to use Mane Choice Crystal Orchid Gel) but now I use theirs because it has great hold with very little crunch and it doesn't make my hair feel like cardboard. I really think you should give it another chance, and maybe use some of their other products as well. I just don't recommend the detangling brush because the bristles are pretty short, and the t-shirt towel needs a fastening loop and button.

@@ManesByMelloh I can't wait, I'm so excited!!
Loved the video! Please do a video on the science of hair porosity! I've always thought that I had low porosity hair, but now I have so many questions because I've never heard someone say that its rare.
We should all know by now oil doesn't moisturize hair but if water doesn't then what the heck does???
Mell could you please make a video about how to use silicone?
I loved you as a blonde but now I an loving the dark hair too!! You can do no wrong ❤❤❤
Thank you for talking about texturism〰️❤➰
Can't wait for texture Tuesday today! The one weekday I absolutely love! It's been 3 weeks so I hope we get to see a brand new 2023 video today! ❣️
Coming bacjk tomorrow miss you!!
You are amazing, smart, and it always makes me feel great to watch your videos! Thank you for uploading
This couldn’t have come at a better time🙌
I am hair for you
Why did I tear up at the end 😭
You do not need hair to be beautiful.
Love this! The baby pink glasses…omgosh I lost it laughing😂😂😂 You’re the best, Mell! And your hair looks incredible, as always.
Love ya Christina ❤️❤️❤️
My hair has its own problems. When straight, it's frizzy. When wavy, it's flat. When curly, it's a mix of both. I want my curls to have volume😭
Dear Santa: All I want for Christmas is for all my curly-haired beauties to find this channel!!
I freakin love your humor and personality! You are a gorgeous soul! ❤ I love all your videos!
You are soooooo beautiful, girl. I'm learning a lot about my curls. God bless you!
You’re so charismatic funny & informative! Thanks Mell
MY WORLD HAS BEEN ROCKED in the best way possible
Omg THANK YOU FOR THIS SOOOOOOO MANY of us need this. Really... seriously......having a looser texture doesn't make us less beautiful. I live this video. As all of your amazing videos. Thank you Mell!!!
Your hair is freaking beautiful and incredibly curly! You've discovered the secrets.
Hey Mell and Amanda! I received a box from y'all yesterday and I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the wonderful goodies!! Me and my hairs can't wait to try them!
MADISON!! I’m sooo happy it reached you, thank you for all your support we truly hope you enjoy ❤️💚 happy holidays!!
Thank you so much for the info and videos. I have never liked my curly hair but my hair needed a break from straightening. You helped me learn how to care for it and bring out the best. I never new how curly I was. Now I am motivated to caring for my hair to nurture the curls! Here’s to an awesome 2023 for your channel🎉
Wow!
I think that baby hairs are a sign of hair growth, but the baby hairs themselves often stay shorter than the rest of the hairs.
this is so good! i appreciate what curly & natural hair influencers have taught us, but some of that ish was just straight up wrong lol. and that's ok, our hair improved regardless. but we can stop now haha.
So true about the bleaching every time I get my hair highlighted it doesn’t curl the same. No more bleach for me!
So many good things for me to hear. Thank you for making this! And very entertaining 💛
Honestly, this is my favorite video you have done. I loved it.
Rosemary oil has been studied to be as effective as minoxidil. My hair line has gotten a lot lower since putting a couple drops on it after a shower
It was shown to be as effective as 2% minoxidil when most people use 5%. Also studies can be wrong, the researchers can repeat the study over and over until they get the result they are paid for by lobbyists. Be careful and always be suspicious
@@personmcdudeguy why do you assume I didn't look at multiple studies?
@@personmcdudeguy I guess you can say I'm suspicious of your assumptions of me coming into this
Love this! Mel, can you do an updated video on color treated hair maintenance? Particularly keeping Demi color in longer
WAIT I need you to expand on the baby hairs😂
Hardest truth, my hair is probably just wavy and not curly 😔
And that's okay! 💖
No such thing as """just""" wavy! Waves are a curl type, and all curls are beautiful ❤️
it's very difficult to accept the effects hormones can have.
I love your channel, my hair is type 4a/b and I've learned a lot, your personality is lovely and you're very funny😊
Hi sunshine thank you so much, I always try to keep my content as applicable to all curl types as possible and I'm so glad you are enjoying my videos
@@ManesByMell ❤❤❤
Truth hurts… (I stopped counting how many of the 73 applied to me…. 😂 ) Thanks for telling it like it is! 😊
“Drinking more....water!” 😂
Hey, Mell !
Thank you for this video and thanks for pointing out you don't need straight hair to be beautiful. I have struggled a lot with that and most days I just wonder- cant I be normal and have normal hair, like most of the girls...
PS. Argentina is going to win for sure!
Yaaaaassss say it louder for the ones in the back!! Love this!! ❤
Pov you have been watching Mel for a long time so none of these are shocks to you
You are so awesome. Some of the info is so overwhelming. Keeping it simple, and using the advice you give (specifically for waves) has been awesome.
Absolutely amazing👏🏼👏🏼 I’m SO here for this, girl.
I love your honesty!
Soo beautiful with black hair😊
I wish I could make soooooo many ppl watch this whole thing! Haha. You're so great Mell!
Oooh. I got to “water does not moisturize your hair” and had to stop and ask, huhhhhh???? Please explain. I thought water is the main source of moisture for your hair. I’m lost Mel. Please explain. ❤️
The water will evaporate and leave your hair dryer, so you've got to seal in your moisture.
Hair repels water, it needs conditioning or "moisture"
Water doesnt technically moisturise but hydrates and once it evaporates, the hair become dry leaving no moisture. So you have to seal it in.
@@-...................- So my understanding was that moisture can only come from one source and that source is water. Anything else that we use either seals in water, replaces water (like on a refresh day) or provide nourishment and conditioning. But moisture comes from water and products that have water content. Have I been wrong all these years?
Its the same with your skin. Making your face wet will not moisturize it. Applying moisturizing products will
drinking water, the most difficult step for me but it's one, if not, the most important step
@@Mellguido0 omg no way
I have trichotillomania but I also has beautiful curly hair, it's a struggle not to cause my own damage.
I had a compulsion to keep cutting/ trimming my hair. Its hard.
Thanks Mell, I needed that...
I love the LUS gel! It is soooo good!!!
Happy Texture Tuesday!! Love learning from you!! Much love and happiness!!! Xoxo 😘
