Hormones. Let me say it again for the haters in the back.. your body changes constantly, and your hair will also especially as you age and your hormones change. Example every women I know who got pregnant, had kids, had their hair change. One used to have straight up curly hair and after those hormones kicked in, her hair went almost straight, she had to start getting perms to achieve curls again. Hormones change everything as as we age.
Exactly, hormones! When I was a child I had frizzy but straight hair and there was no way to make it wavy or curly, even though my dad has 2 c wavy hair and my mum and my brother have 3 b curly hair. However, when I got my first period my hair started to get a very weak 2a wavy pattern. Fast forward to my first pregnancy and my hair turned into a 2b wavy hair. By the second pregnancy it became a 2b/2c wavy hair. Now that I'm back to my period and I'm in the process of stopping breastfeeding my hair has never been more beautiful with a 2 c / 3 a pattern. My crazy hormones journey 😂😂😂
Same thing happened to me. I had very curly hair all of my life. 2,5 years ago had a baby, and as time passed my curls started to become more and more straight. Now I have wavy hair and sometimes even straight. And that's all normal. We change, our body changes and our hair teksture changes.
My hair went super straight during pregnancy, and shiny. During that pregnancy the only thing I had to worry during that time was the fly aways. Location, weather, age, hormones, products, even evil eyes can change your hair. 😉 Every few years I have to relearn how to do my current hair. And now I know im not the only one.
Also want to add…any major biological change can impact your hair. I have a friend who got an autoimmune disease and her previously wavy/curly hair started growing in straight. When Mel posted this I was actually concerned she was going to say she was sick! So I am glad to hear that’s not the case.
I don't see a huge change in her hair TBH. I actually think it looks better and healthier. If there was any health issue going on would make it look much less healthy and likely thinner, change in texture and feel. That's what's happening to me. hairdressers are having a hard time doing my hair and it breaks easily if they use too much heat tools. Hard to not just shave it off.
This! Any endocrine/metabolic/hormonal/etc fluctuations (and women in general can have many) directly affect hair texture, skin, etc. My hair has changed drastically many times throughout my 65+ years, due to adrenal, thyroid, pregnanies & menopausal challenges. Thicker, thinner, crazy loss, grayer, darker, curlier, straighter, you name it!
Hormones have ravaged my hair over the years. Born with poker straight hair, late puberty turned it super curly, even longer than Amanda's. Started fertility treatments in 30s and lost all curl. Back to poker straight. Enter menopause in late 40s/early 50s, and curls are back!
This is me! Born with straight blond hair, turned curly at 11, darkened and is now black… and honestly I’m wondering if will straighten if I get pregnant or in menopause (early 30s)
Me too, mine was straight until the 80’s perms and big hair then straight again in my 20’s now in my 50’ it’s curly on the bottom up to my ears then straight on top 😂🙄🙄😡😡 I look like my mom tried to give me a home perm !!!
Same type of story for me. I had straight hair then when I was 8 it got frizzy and I eventually figured it out and got curls. In my early 20's it got straight. Mid 20's back to curly. During my pregnancy straight again. After my pregnancy my pituitary gland stopped working and so did my thyroid... my hair thinned and got curly again. Now it's not thin but it is fine and curly. Weird. I expect menopause to be super special 😂
I love that you said you could still see your natural curl pattern while applying products. There's so many people who think your curls have to be completely product free with ZERO things done to it, to show your "REAL" curl pattern. Drives me nuts🙄🙄they don't get that products don't change your natural curls
I have 3a/3b, NATURALLY high porosity curls. Thick and course hair. I’ve yet to come across an influencer with hair like mine. When I don’t put any products in my hair it doesn’t even curl, it’s just frizz. It doesn’t clump. It almost looks like curls when you brush them out. Has a slight wave to it
I've been so confused why, the more I take care of my hair, the healthier and softer it gets, but the worse my waves have gotten! THANK YOU for this revelation!! Also, thank you for staying goofy in all these videos 🤣 It definitely helps when I'm watching and getting frustrated with my hair to stop and have a laugh
I have ALWAYS said my curls were tighter when I had bleached hair and everyone acted like I was crazy. It was definitely more frizzy as well, but the curls were more what I wanted
the front strands of my hair are bleached and the rest is my natural dark hair and i could tell you how annoying it is when the textures feel different and curl different
Wow, I was always hesitant to bleach, now I have another reason to! I had assumed I needed maximum health to maximize my waviness. Do your curls also last more days after bleaching, or less??
I may be wrong about this, but could your curls also appear looser due to the colour. I feel like blonde hair catches the light more, enhancing the definition of the curls. Whereas, as a dark haired gal, I find that my curls can often get lost within eachother - especially when I'm not in direct sunlight ♡
Yes! I prefer my hair bleached because then it looks curlier because of how the lightness defines my curls instead of looking like a big dark chunk of frizz!
Yes, finally good to know everybody struggles with hair texture changes. I had straight hair as a kid, waves entered the scene in college, and after each of my four kids the hairs got curlier and curlier. I’m a legit curly with looser curl in the back, super tight in the front. But, I have had fifteen surgeries with anesthesia since 2011, and anesthesia can really mess with the body for many months, also I have hypothyroidism. And when having multiple surgeries a year, I’ve struggled a lot with my curl pattern, extreme hair loss and also a few good years in there. Really appreciate you and the wonderful teaching.
Dude, the surgeries. 😬 I have had many surgeries over the years without hair loss, but I had anesthesia three times last year (two surgeries) and I have lost nearly half of my hair since then! It probably doesn't help that I was on a higher level steroid around the time of the last surgery. I'm desperately trying to put the brakes on it with supplements.
Same! Pregnancy really brought on the curls and they continue to get curlier as I aged. Now menopause hit and I had several surgeries and my hair is falling out at an alarming rate.
IMO your hair looks better now. The curls are much chunkier and fuller so it looks like you have a lot more hair compared to the tighter blonde curls. Also, loving the darker color. I have the same problem with my bottom curls forming one big fat curl and going right back together no matter how many times I try to separate them like a magnet.
I deal with the same thing. I saw a woman call it a curlnado once and have been using the term ever since. Lol I can shake them apart and an hour later I've just got two big curls, one on each side of my head.
I used to have gorgeous 3a/3b curls. They were so pretty that strangers would approach me and want to touch my hair! I loved my curls. Fifteen years later, my curls are gone and now have 2a/2b waves. I have no idea what happened. My hair is virgin again and very healthy, maybe too healthy, too soft. I don't heat sale. It might be age related. I'm learning to be ok and accepting with my hair now. It's all different.
I've experienced the same! My curls used to be 3b/3c and now they are 2c/3a. It's taken me a long time to accept it and while I have, I still hope those tighter curls come back someday.
My curl pattern changes, and I've had some bad hair loss for the last three years... I cut my hair all off and it feels great, but my curls are a sad limp disaster these days
I was the kid with the super curly hair that sat in rollers under hair dryers, was called names, and was Dippity-Do’d to death! Because of you, I am finally embracing my curls at age 60. I’m growing out the Brazilian treatment, put away the flat iron and my hair is now manageable and healthy. I even braved your ponytail cut to start shaping it. I still dye it but that is not going to stop any time soon! Thank you for your channel. I tell everyone with curly hair to go to UA-cam and find Mell.😊
My hair changed in my 20s due to hypothyroidism. If you see pictures of me when I was younger, I had straight hair. It took a long time for me to accept my hair texture change and then find a stylist that knew what to do with my hair. Also, people who undergo chemotherapy and lose their hair have their hair grow back sometimes an entirely different color and texture! My dentist underwent chemotherapy and she had straight, dark blonde/light brown hair. Post-chemo, her hair was very curly and grew back almost black.
I’m 32 and my curl pattern has changed sooooo much throughout the last 15 years!! I had very minimal waves to now having ringlets. I had 2 babies in that time too and when I’m pregnant my curl pattern gets even tighter! It’s so strange but so real.
People have to throw in their 2 cents to try and prove someone wrong which is highly unnecessary 😅 I have seen a lot of curlies that go through the same struggle and I am one of them too! It’s really a part of growing up and our hormonal changes. ALSO I AM SO PROUD OF YOU! Congratulations for 700K subscribers and your new website, i’m so excited for you 🥹💜💜
Mel! Thank you so much for making this video. I feel like, especially in women’s spaces. Nobody really talks about your curl pattern changing? Especially over the last almost 3 years where the pandemic has caused several people to have hair loss. Whether it’s due to the virus, or just stress in general. I’ve even heard of in some cases, the coronavirus causing peoples curl patterns to change completely. I think, for myself, I was such a shock when my hair started changing texture, because I just didn’t know that that’s what it’s like going into your 20s. The doctor says I’m healthy, but my hair definitely changed. I also like to tell people that even going on birth control can change your hair is texture and thickness. When I was on birth control for three months, my curls started getting dryer. My hair started growing faster! And when I got off of birth control, I started noticing increased shedding. So please make sure that everything is safe and secure.
Ahhh hormones, after an op and peri menopause knocking on my door, my hair has changed texture, thickness and curl pattern. Add to that the greys coming in and I have it aaalllllll going on!! I have thinner spots, about 5 different curl patterns, coarse texture and soft and everything from 2c to 3c, not helped with such a difference in hair density across my head. It is what it is, I do what I can to manage and style it and then remember it’s just hair. Stay happy and healthy Mel, you are doing just fine!!!❤
Ppl have actually accused you of that?! 😂 My curls-waves are much different now,40yrold than they were in my 20s and after kids. They use to be tighter and now more loose. The pattern has changed but from what I understand(and I’ll keep watching) is our hair changes every 7 yrs… plus there’s all kinds of factors that play a part. Sheesh!
Same except no kids. Turning 40 & my hair has been changing over the past few yrs, including silvers. Similarly, my skin has changed too. Our bodies change for a variety of reasons & that is normal & ok & still beautiful! It was frustrating at first trying to figure out what was going on. For real tho - who is talkin smack about our girl bc she is the BEST! Haters gonna hate I guess
I started watching your channel BECAUSE my hair texture changed. It used to be naturally straight. Now it's somewhere between wavy and curly, and I'm still trying to figure out what to do with it. Your tips and product suggestions have helped a lot.
Changing texture will get us all eventually! If you ever get a grey curly person on the show, I'd be SUPER INTO IT! My grey hair tends to be slightly more curly than the rest of my hair, and as I've gotten older (i.e. more grey) I've been having to treat my hair a little differently.
I think it’s best to just accept texture change, I look at as fun and exciting, as I get to experience a whole new curl pattern. My curls for all of my adult life has been 3b/3c, but now it has suddenly become 3a (w/some 2c, and little 3b as well), and it’s so fun watching grow (I did big chop back in nov.)
Change occurs with time. It's inescapable. Don't fight it. Move with it. Trust that you are beautiful and have plenty to offer regardless. And if it's something like a new texture to your hair and you have to care for it differently, then that just adds to the wealth of knowledge that you can share 💗
This makes me feel better. Now that I’m in my mid/late 30’s I’m embracing my curly hair more instead of straightening it or keeping it in a bun, but thyroid problems have caused my hair to thin and now I’m noticing my curls are just not holding in some areas anymore while other areas are super curly
Omg. I needed this video SO MUCH. for the past two years I've been trying to figure out why my 3b curls has become loose. Kid=3a, Teens=3b And now in my mid 20s its going back to 3a sometimes 2c . I dont do color changes or neither I dont put much heat damage in it. This makes more sense now, thank you.
Hormones do have a massive impact on your hair. I have curly hair that was super curly at the nape of my neck. All of a sudden I was starting to feel unwell but also noticed the hair at the nape of my neck went really straight while the rest stayed curly. A few months later I had an adrenal crisis and was diagnosed with Addisons as my body no longer produced cortisol. I was put on cortisol replacement (which isn’t an exact match for our own cortisol but it’s the best we’ve got and it keeps me alive !) and the curls came back at the nape of my neck again. I then found out that cortisol is super important in the formation of our hair growth so that makes sense. I’m still trying to figure out why the rest of my hair wasn’t affected other than my curls relaxed a bit before I was diagnosed and treated. I’ve had to learn so much about the endocrine system (ie hormones) in order to manage my condition and trust me when I say any tiny issues with any of our hormones has a huge impact all around our bodies so it makes sense it massively impacts our hair too. 2 years on from diagnosis and several adrenal crises later (where my body uses up more cortisol then I’ve put in) and I’m just about managing to stabilise my cortisol levels better and in doing so my curls are nearly recovered to how they used to be. So if anyone doubts the effects hormones have on your hair, skin (because that was affected too with the Addisons) etc please take it from someone who had a potentially and very nearly fatal change in their hormones that hormones really do affect everything, yes even your hair. ❤
I had stick straight, baby fine hair until I hit twenty-five. As I have aged, my hair has gotten curlier. In my mid-thirties I had the big fat wave to curls. Now in my mid to late post-menopausal fifties I have three different curl patterns and textures. Manes by Mell and a few others have helped me to not shave my head.
Girl I’ve done the same thing recently!! My curls change depending on so many factors. I’ve stopped dying it and manipulating the curl pattern and using as much product and denman brushing it as much and my hair is so much healthier & happier & fuller. I’m also healthier & happier which impacts my hair
My hair has changed at least 3 times in my life and I am turning 31 this year. It is normal to adjust your habits to your needs, it’s the healthy thing to do :)
I'm 38, with type 2C-3a hair. I didn't know that my natural hair could produce actual curls until grey hair started growing in curly. I researched a little bit about hair texture changing and that's how I landed on curly styling. It's been a game changer, emotionally. I appreciate your videos SO much!
Yes! Hormones affect so much! My hair was always slightly wavy, and after having and weaning my daughter, it got way curlier! I went from 2A/B to 3A/B. Now peri menopause is changing it again.
Omg but if it wasn’t because of this video, aside of the color, I would’ve never be able to tell your curls look different than before. ._. IT IS GORGEOUS LIKE IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN!! HOWEVER! I really did need this video. I recently had a baby girl, she’s almost 8 months old and I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease while pregnant. So long story short, I’ve noticed the bottom of my hair curls just as always but from my roots to half of my hair it’s almost straight 😭… my body has been through a lot lately and I can finally understand what’s going on with my hair. I need to be gracious with it and accept the change. Thank you very much for this video. Love yah!💕
Great video Mell. I think it’s important to help people understand why hair changes even if it’s just a visual change. Personally I think your hair is just as curly but like you pointed out because it’s healthier it clumps more and may not have quite the ‘volume’ or ‘grit’ it had before which changes its appearance. In this vid both sides looked as curly but you could see the salt spray had added slightly more texture and volume than the side without. I notice these days my curls sit much ‘heavier’ being uncoloured and healthy than when my hair was bleached and dry. I also think highlighted hair shows the curl more than dark hair. Either way I think you are still a curly haired goddess and your hair looks super shiny and healthy and luxe ❤
Congrats on website! Also, the color blonde in and of itself, is why hair would look different than when brown. I did the same thing in my early twenties; I died it blonde and color changes appearances. Even the braids I would put in my hair looked better than when my hair was brown because of contrast, etc! You are so not a phony! Thank you for everything! You are why I am "UA-cam certified" to cut hair now lol....and why my curls look great!
My hair is wavy and fine (2A-B with some 3A curls) and it gets much wavier when bleached. I always assumed it was because my fine hair didn't have as much grip, so the curl groups didn't stay together easily, but when the cuticle is roughed up a bit, I have more friction to keep my waves from falling. So I ironically used salt sprays and other products that contain magnesium sulfate, but I thought it was mimicking the grit, rather than actually chemistry!
Thank you for educating us curly haired girls and I’m sure even boys! I was born to a family with straight hair I got my curls from my dad who always kept his hair short you wouldn’t even tell he had curly hair, I always kept my curly hair short too because no one close to my knew what to do with my hair haha I always wished to have straight hair I was even ashamed of my curly hair but thanks to people like you I started to take care of it and understand what it needs ❤️✨ THANK YOU!!!!!
My daughter has gorgeous auburn curls and wants straight hair (like mine). She rolls out of bed gorgeous. I started oiling her hair with jojoba and omg!!! No more frizz, she looks like she's been at the salon all day.
Wow Mel, thank you! I’ve subscribed to your website, and I’ve been a long time follower, just because I enjoy your videos. That said: at 49 years of age, I’ve only just learned 5 days ago that my fine hair is not stubborn, instead it’s a 2b-2c and even some places 3a! WHAT? So, here I am, relearning how to my own hair. Thank goodness for you, your honesty and reassuring humor! Thank you so much!
idk what people have been accusing you of but i think your hair now is fantastic. it’s healthy ! and i’ve been hoping my hair clumps up more in the same way after also dying it back to my natural color. curls and waves change so much from the environment to hormones and we can’t expect it to always be the same, just like our skin which also reflects health changes
YES!! I'm 42 and noticed my curls becoming "undone" once I turned 40 :( The texture feels thin and wirey now, probably because the majority of my hair is now naturally grey. I started getting grey's in my teens. I don't understand my hair now, it almost looks straight like what am I supposed to do with it now? Not feeling the greatest as I adored my curls
With my 2a/2b hair I definitely don’t have your hair texture, but I truly love to watch your videos because I love your character, how you talk in your videos and how you are generally^^
As a newbie here, I really think your current look is astonishingly gorgeous; way nicer than the bleach look. I always think a person's natural hair color is the most beautiful on them (unless it's something wild that suits the person, like green or cherry red or rainbow or multi-pastel). Bleach kinda projects "I'm young and experimenting" or "I want to fit in" while natural hair colors project "I'm comfortable in who I am" and wild colors say "I'm just having fun with my life." I had my bleach phase too, but it felt wrong. I got the family "start greying in your 20s" gene, so now I rock my natural black with crazy deep blue demi-permanent streaks and I *LOVE* it. So much happier and more confident like this than being "on-trend."
I totally agree with what you said about natural color! I used to hate my hair color (dark blonde/light brown) cause it looked so dull. Had my phase where I bleached it once and instantly regretted it. Now that I’m back to natural, I’ve realized that taking care of the health of my hair has made the color so much better looking! Deep conditioning regularly brings out the natural shine and I love it!
Finally! Thank you so much for being vulnerable and creating this beautiful safe space for us to talk about these changes. I'm also in my late twenties and I used to have 3C curls, with your usual 3B variant, but now I have 3A to 2B curls and waves. My hormones have been acting up and I used to think it was everything that had to do with my routine, without accepting that our hair changes as our body changes, and that's ok! But to get to that acceptance, emotional wise? *whew* There was a lot of grief to be process, along with a weird social "guilt."
I have always had straight hair. Then one day in my early 40's , I thought my hair was damaged because it was frizzy and no matter what I did, my hair was frizzy. I once let my hair air dry and I noticed it was curling which was a shock. Being hair stupid, I have had to learn how to take care of curls. I still don't have it down but I am doing better with the help of your videos. Thank you!
Personally, I am loving this color. It flatters your beautiful skin tone. Your hair looks incredibly healthy. I think I’m going to try that salt spray. My curls really need it. ❤
Hi Mell! Great video. You know, it's not an unfortunate truth about texture change, its just truth. Our skin texture changes greatly over our lifetime. Hair does as well. The beauty of the healthy hair care you promote is that it transcends all the texture changes and addresses our hair at various textures and climates. Your hair was and remains beautiful 💕
That's very true. In my case, when I was a little girl I used to have super straight hair, but then puberty hit and it changed in an extreme way... it started to get curly (although, at the beginning I thought it was frizz), and also, it got a bit darker and thicker. So, of course, hormones have a big impact on our hair. Btw, I love your videos Mell, you are incredible talking about these kind of curly hair topics, you are very sincere and we can always learn something new.
After a bout with sepsis last year and nearly dying, my hair changed. While recovering, it fell out by the handfuls. Six months later, the fall out is significantly less. My hair is growing back, but still thin feeling to me. My curls changed. I went from 3A to 3C, almost coil type of curls. So yes, hormones, age, illness, this can all change the hair. I am grateful to be alive, so the hair stuff took a back seat. Don't get me wrong, rolling up a ball of hair bigger than a golf ball each wash was scary. I just had to learn to do my hair a little different, but mostly the same. I enjoy your videos. Even at my age of almost 60, I learn stuff from you. Thank you.
I went from 1a hair for most of my life to 2c over a short period of hormonal changes. Quite a learning curve for me. Though my mum had such curly hair as a child she was called bubbles sadly her mum pulled it straight so she spent a life time thinking she just had very thick frizzy hair that took work. She was in her 60s before her sister told her about her childhood curls. My body is heading more towards her DNA I guess. 😊 If she’d had you around she would have been able to recognise and embrace them ! A bit sad really. Would love a video on what you no longer use and why. Congratulations on the subs and website. 🎉❤😊
Ever since I had my kids, my texture has changed. My hair used to be ringlets and now it's so different. It's very depressing. Good to know it's not just me!
OMG my curls are totally different now compared to my early 20's and teens. Its so sad. Nothing I can do, but I completely understand what you are going through.
yesss, i would LOVE for you to do a video over the products you don't use anymore!! i still use the John Frieda frizz ease serum and I haven't seen you use that in FOREVER and you swore by it.
Wow, you're dealing great with your hair changing, it took me years to get my curls as curly and as healthy as they are now, I think it would be so painful seeing my curls get looser, like it is with my grays, I've got my first gray at 21, now I'm 27 and I have a ton of grays, on dark hair, it's very frustrating. The worst thing is that I found my first gray soon after getting rid of bleach, when I started taking good care of my hair and decided I'm not gonna bleach it again, the irony 😂 if you're still reading, congrats on your website! ❤️
I am naturally curly. I am 57 years old and I watch this lady quite a bit. I love her personality and her intelligence about hair. I grew up going with my mom to the "beauty shop" and I think I have seen quite a bit of changes. Hairstyles are so much more relaxed and easy on the girls coming up today. I am an 80's girl I graduated in 1984 and hair was BIG. I loved it. Now that I am older and I have had every cut color style imaginable. I wished I knew how my hair was going to change with age and hormones. I have started HRT and my hair is so much stronger thicker and my curls have come back better than ever. No color No heat No more damage. I am using most of the products this lady has recommended. I love the products and thanks for the videos!
Your curls look even more luscious now. I totally understand how it can change through hormones. My hair was pinned straight until my late 20s and my son was born curly. They grew out when he was about three and now he has 3B curls at 15.
Yes please share products you no longer use and why!! That would be very helpful for me. I’m on my 3rd year of embracing my looser wavy curls and my texture has changed alot
Hormones gave me curls. I always had straight hair but 3 years ago when I stopped taking my birth control pills, my hair started to curl and I learned trough your channel how to take care of them. ❤️
Definitely. Birth control can do so many things to our hair. A lot of women don’t know that! I’ve been on two different birth control pills in my life, and one of them gave me a title curl pattern and cross our hair! Second? Gave me a final curl pattern and looser hair. I’ve even heard of some women who go on the implant and they have extreme amounts of hair loss.
I’m 44 and have had two pregnancies 7 years apart. I’ve also traveled and lived all over the US. Ocean views to deserts, hard water to soft. My curl pattern has changed so many times over the years. I actually love your current pattern and color because I think it looks really healthy and natural.
My curls change all the time. They're changing again now as I grow out bleach. My mother who has straight hair asked me. What did you DO to your hair. It has spirals!
I'm glad you talked about texture changes!! It's something I've been experiencing in the back of my head and it has been frustrating. I didn't know how widespread it is amongst curlies. Good to know I'm not alone.
My curl pattern and hair texture has definitely been changing as it changes colour. Most of my hair is fine and extremely soft, but my hairs that have turned white are extremely course, dry and the curls are more than twice as tight. It's gotten to a point where it usually looks scraggly and frizzy.
I’m 64 years old and recently had 3-C high porosity hair. I’m letting my grey grow out, so I’ve not highlighted or dyed my roots for over 6 months now and I’m noticing my hair isn’t as curly. So I’ll be trying the salt spray for sure. Thank you for all your great information. I talk you up constantly on the curly silver hair group! You’re the BEST❤
I love Mel. I honestly had no idea I had 2A / 2B waves till I started watching her channel. I just thought I had frizzy big hair 🥲 now 28 (i know, embarrassing 😂) if there’s anyone I go to for products / thoughts, it’s Mel! I consider often taking a trip just to have an appointment with her 🥲 Much love from NY ❤ please never stop posting, you’ve changed my life!
I am 38, and just found out I have 2C 3A hair during the early part of the pandemic! I thought I had “bad hair”. It was always unruly & BIG. One of my friends whose hair was similar to mine, started the CGM, and suggested I try it. BAM! I was so happy to have pretty hair. I almost feel like I appreciate it more, because every person usually wants the opposite of what they have. I love MY hair.
My hair was curlier when going through puberty, then it calmed down quite a bit. When I got pregnant, it was at its curliest, but after my last pregnancy I had to have a hysterectomy and now it’s wavy. A friend of mine was on the opposite side of things. Her hair was barely wavy to begin with and after she went through chemo and her hair grew back, it grew in completely curly. My aunt used to have curly hair till she got pregnant and now her hair is all but straight. I honestly thought we were going to get a pregnancy announcement with this video.
I wonder if you have many old subscribers. I embraced my curls only last year at the age of 70!. I'm finally my real self, well except for a semi-permanent color. I found your channel and started getting educated and discovered product. I now went from short, blow dried hair to scrunching my medium length curlsand loving it. Thanks for your curl coaching.
Hi Mell, I wanted to know how your routine has changed now that you have medium porosity hair (in regards to using protein on your hair). I’ve been struggling to figure out a routine for myself, I too have medium porosity and fine hair. Also I love the website, I’ve already subscribed to the newsletter 💜
THANK YOU FOR THIS. In the past few years I have gone from virgin hair, to heavily bleached hair, back to virgin hair again, and my curl pattern has changed drastically. I could not for the life of me figure out why my curls got tighter when they were seriously damaged! It was obvious that it was due to bleaching, since when I have regrown them, they went back to being more wavy than curly, but the mechanics of it remained a mystery. It also makes me wonder if my change in curl pattern between my teenage years and now is not only due to changing hormones, but also the level of care put into my hair. Back then, a 2in1 shampoo and some styling mousse were all I used. And the curls were crunchy as hell, but my god, were they tight. Now, with hair oils, masks, creams, protective mists, they sure behave very differently.
Same!! I tried googling for years to figure it out and it was always ''bleaching ruined my hair'' or ''bleaching made my curls disappear'' but never what we've experienced. I always knew it was the bleach/lightening of my hair color so its nice to have validation and that she even offered tips on how to get some grit and texture to the hair again but in a like more healthy way lol
Thank you, it's uplifting to know that these changes are natural. My mom had medical therapie to help her fight breast cancer. She won. But from that time her hair grew curly. Before, she had partly straight and wavy hair. I'm in my 30's and my wavy hair developes more and more curly sections. Around the face it's almost straight. I also changed from coloring my hair to natural color during my first pregnancy. It is awesome that people like you here on UA-cam help me to get along with caring for my hair as it changes. I learned a lot from you. Thanks for that 🥰🙏
Yes, please share which products you have shelved! You really were my Main Girl this last year while I learned my curls, so I have seen A LOT of your videos and would love to get an update!
Thank you, Mell, for talking about something that I think many (or all) of us have experienced! I'm so excited for the new launch! And I feel for you, I can't imagine how hard it is being in the limelight and having people judge and assume things. I appreciate you putting yourself out there for us!
I've actually just moved to a slightly more dry climate and my curls are tighter with less clumping. I miss humidity. Absolutely love your natural colour on you!
I LOVE the darker hair on you, makes your eyes really pop! I did also notice a difference in the 'salty' side :-) looked curlier to me. Thanks for all your great vids and now a website! YAY!
@@ManesByMell no, you are! As a side note, I don’t see to be able to subscribe to the newsletter :( and the “contact us” link doesn’t work for me. I’m sure it’s all just because of the new rollout, but figured I’d let you know. Love you Seesters!
So many root causes of hair changes, HORMONAL fluctuations being #1. Also METABOLIC changes as we age. I love your natural hair color btw, looks much more natural/healthy compared to the heavy bleached look. Keep up the great work, will checkout ur new website!
Just for the record, I love your hair with its natural color!! I think it suits you well and is very classy. I’m also relieved to hear that even for someone with your expertise and tight curls that growing out the bleach can change the texture! When I first started with CGM I found my perfect technique that made my hair look like it had literally been curled with an iron. (I’m 2a) it soaked up gel perfectly. Problem is I wanted to grow out the bleach. It’s been natural for a couple years now and it just barely holds the wave. Everything weighs it down. I’ve tried to adapt. Styling damp instead of soaking wet has helped. Best I can do now is use some mousse to get a rougher beachier look. Oh well, if I can only have one, I’d rather have my natural color.
I was braiding my hair to sleep in and putting in buns during the day as “protective styles” over covid. I stopped now because I can actually see a line of demarcation where the curl pattern has changed and it feels limp :( even though I do the entire olapex line once a month and k18 two weeks later on a constant basis. It’s difficult to keep my hair down even if it’s pinned back but idk what else to do because I’m a teacher and I’m constantly bending down so I can’t have it in my face
Maybe shorter bangs and a few little hair clips? I did that when I worked, I moved and bend a lot at work and those little hair clips helped me not having my hair in my face all the time
This! I do 2 flat twist, one on each side then use a bun. I'm just trying to grow out my hair and it's on a awkward stage. But my bangs are still very curly but the rest of my hair (the bun part) it a 2c-3b mix. It is virgin hair so I can relate to Mel but I think the buns have something to do with it
Definitely age and hormones change a lot the pattern of everybody's hair, unaffortunatly in menopause we can star loosing hair and looks less curly. You are so young and your hair is beautiful !!
I had board straight hair my ENTIRE live until I hit my mid 30's. As the years went on, it got more and more curlier! I literally had to re-learn how to do my hair! So change happens. As does life! 🙃I turned 50 in January. 🤫 For the last year-ish I have struggled with hair loss. I would love a video on tried and true products that help with hair growth. I have tried the drops from the Ordinary and they kinda help but nothing monumental! Any advice from anyone would be much appreciated! ❤
Does this apply to black women tho? I have curly type 4 hair because I’m half black and I would just about die if I lost my curls during pregnancy
@@Cherrydriver1 why wouldn't it apply to you, different ethnicities aren't different species lol. Hair changes are common during and after pregnancy
Yup, I agree. I have RA and with my infusion it's changed my hair
Can I ask what the autoimmune disease is? I just got diagnosed too and am curious to know. (I have Crohns disease)
Oh yeahh. The reverse usually happens with cancer patients. Their post chemo hair tends to be curlier.
This is a lot like my own journey!
@@marissaflorez6273 that happend to me too, im a little scared that they can return to be straight again since i love my curls so much
Me too, mine was straight until the 80’s perms and big hair then straight again in my 20’s now in my 50’ it’s curly on the bottom up to my ears then straight on top 😂🙄🙄😡😡 I look like my mom tried to give me a home perm !!!
Drives me nuts🙄🙄they don't get that products don't change your natural curls
my hair is fine and wavy/curly so you can’t see my natural pattern just air dried with no product, it gets poofy
@@xoxorosequartz 100% Same with me.
Ditto
I have 3a/3b, NATURALLY high porosity curls. Thick and course hair. I’ve yet to come across an influencer with hair like mine. When I don’t put any products in my hair it doesn’t even curl, it’s just frizz. It doesn’t clump. It almost looks like curls when you brush them out. Has a slight wave to it
@@briannab3991 mine is like that but fine (it’s more 2c/3a but i relate to the high porosity and undefined struggle)
Me too, and my hairstylist, who is a curl specialist, said that that is pretty common.
the front strands of my hair are bleached and the rest is my natural dark hair and i could tell you how annoying it is when the textures feel different and curl different
THIS IS SO REAL! i was wondering why my curl type was nicer when my hair was bleached. now i know why!
Me tooo! Girl i thought i was crazy
That makes so much sense
I have the same experience with my very dark hair! I have some very defined waves/almost-curls that get lost in my dark mass of hair lol
That makes a lot of sense actually
Yes! I prefer my hair bleached because then it looks curlier because of how the lightness defines my curls instead of looking like a big dark chunk of frizz!
This was my thought too. I find my darker curls really hard to photograph and they never look as curly in a photo.
I hemorrhaged horribly after a very long surgery and about half of my hair just dropped out.
Lol
I can shake them apart and an hour later I've just got two big curls, one on each side of my head.
@@krisdiane LOL 🤣
I have the same issue and I wish I could get my curls back but I have no clue if they will ever come back
I lost almost all curl when I went on the pill. Now i've stopped a year ago, and they're back.
My curl pattern changes, and I've had some bad hair loss for the last three years... I cut my hair all off and it feels great, but my curls are a sad limp disaster these days
Same thing for me!
Congratulations! As a much older fan (65), I am so excited and proud of what you've accomplished!
U weren't kidding when u said older 💀
@@kuhbjhbI’m a 65-yea-old fan too
@@kuhbjhb Geez. Believe it or not you will probably still have hair when you are 65. Be well ❣️
@@kuhbjhb that’s rude to point out. You’ll be 65 one day too.
@@peachyspalace ….if she’s lucky.
Isn’t pregnancy fun! Pregnancy will do that. Once you hit perimenopause it may change again.
I’ve been experiencing texture change the last year or so and this makes me feel better. I thought I was suddenly messing up my styling.
I think people's hair texture changing due to hormones (not even from pregnancy or puberty) is just not common knowledge tbh
Kid=3a, Teens=3b
And now in my mid 20s its going back to 3a sometimes 2c . I dont do color changes or neither I dont put much heat damage in it. This makes more sense now, thank you.
I have split dyed hair and my bleached side is far curlier than the natural side. Salt and texture sprays have been so helpful for me
Thank you for further confirming my hypothesis 🙌🏻 dry hair just curls better than moisturized/healthy hair sometimes!
I’m the opposite! My bleached hair is usually looser curls lol
Same! Freaking hormones...
Thank you for this. I jad straight hair until 18 months ago. It started waving and curling. Thanks menopause. This made me feel a LOT better.
I appreciate your videos SO much!
you're hair actually looks much healthier and even more gorgeous!!
Mell's enthusiasm never ceases to make me smile! Her energetic, kind nature is palpable!
Wow. Appreciate you thank you sending love to you ❤️❤️❤️
Yes! Hormones affect so much! My hair was always slightly wavy, and after having and weaning my daughter, it got way curlier! I went from 2A/B to 3A/B. Now peri menopause is changing it again.
Yo this has been the earliest I've been. Feeling proud
it is very much appreciated!!😘😘
Hardcore Mel fans go! 💇♀️❤
Bleaching and dying hair causes damage even at the roots due to the chemicals.
Me too 😢
With my 2a/2b hair I definitely don’t have your hair texture, but I truly love to watch your videos because I love your character, how you talk in your videos and how you are generally^^
Totally agree as well!
Yes, please, share the hair products you stopped using and why next time 👍🏼🥰
You don’t need a thing. Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Ever since I had my kids, my texture has changed. My hair used to be ringlets and now it's so different. It's very depressing. Good to know it's not just me!
Thank you for addressing this. It's so important to realize and accept that our bodies (and hair) changes over time. Your hair is beautiful!!
Me too but it was Prednisone that made my hair curly. Mel has been an excellent educator to get me through this at 70!
Yup, me too. Scraggly, stringy, dry and yet, healthy soft and flat. Menopause good times,
I’m 64 years old and recently had 3-C high porosity hair.
Congrats on your launch, guys! And your hair is gloriously rocked as you're growing it. :)
Sister, I don't even care that your hair has changed. It's still BEAUTIFUL and I'd kill to have it 🤣🤍✨
@@misschriss6874 YES! 🥰 I absolutely love this for you! I feel the same exact way! 😍
Your hair looks healthy and the curls are popping...thank you for continuing to provide informative curly hair content.
I am very interested in why you stopped using products - a great idea for next video! congrats on the web site and newsletter!!
My hair also curls tighter when it's damaged. The healthier it is, the looser it gets, and it also changes as I age.
Thanks for that 🥰🙏
As soon as you announced the website, I jumped right on and signed up. Congrats on growing your brand. 🙂
Yes, please share which products you have shelved! You really were my Main Girl this last year while I learned my curls, so I have seen A LOT of your videos and would love to get an update!
Your hair looks great natural also!
Thank you so much 🫶🏻
Wow - I didn't notice the curl change at all. I was just thinking your hair cut and natural color were looking amazing with your curls! 😘
Happy Texture Thursday!! So excited for this video!! Congrats on the website!! Much love and happiness!! Xoxo 😘
You're the best! Thanks Deanna😘
Thank you, Mell, for talking about something that I think many (or all) of us have experienced! I'm so excited for the new launch!
And I feel for you, I can't imagine how hard it is being in the limelight and having people judge and assume things. I appreciate you putting yourself out there for us!
My mum used to have wavy/curly hair, but after she got pregnant and had kids it went mostly straight.
I've actually just moved to a slightly more dry climate and my curls are tighter with less clumping. I miss humidity. Absolutely love your natural colour on you!
Happy texture Thursday!! THIS IS AMAZING!!! Big congratulations! Count me in for sure ❤️❤️❤️
Yay! Thank you Lynzi!!😘😘 Happy Texture Thursday😘
I LOVE the darker hair on you, makes your eyes really pop! I did also notice a difference in the 'salty' side :-) looked curlier to me. Thanks for all your great vids and now a website! YAY!
Aww congrats on the website launch!
Thank you!! You're the best Faye
@@ManesByMell no, you are! As a side note, I don’t see to be able to subscribe to the newsletter :( and the “contact us” link doesn’t work for me. I’m sure it’s all just because of the new rollout, but figured I’d let you know. Love you Seesters!
Your hair looks healthy and beautiful. It has a lot of bounce and a softer youthful look to it now. Absolutely stunning! ❤
So many root causes of hair changes, HORMONAL fluctuations being #1. Also METABOLIC changes as we age. I love your natural hair color btw, looks much more natural/healthy compared to the heavy bleached look. Keep up the great work, will checkout ur new website!
Not really new research shows it doesn't slow until 60-70 it's more life style changes like becoming more sedentary and bad diet
I am 1 year into menopause. My curls have been frizzy and flat for awhile now. With your directions my curls look better than ever! Thanks hon.
pls make a vid about products u dont use anymore and why
on it!!
I think I’m the 1% that prefers Mel with her natural hair 😭
Me too!
Me too. I look at the old videos and I think she looks so much better today than back then. That was a dated look to me.
My hair loosened up after I had my son. I like my waves better for some reason. Your hair looks so much healthier now! Love it
I had board straight hair my ENTIRE live until I hit my mid 30's. ❤
All facts aside, I LOVE your natural color!! SO pretty, and it compliments your complexion so perfectly!
