I think font delibretaly gives that comic book look, Vagrant Story had that kind of aesthetic too, and i think it gives the games that 'Matsuno' style i love so much. Also,great video as always, i really would love to see a Vagrant Story review from you!
I agree, that's a great comparison I didn't think of. Vagrant Story definitely has similarities there, presumably because Matsuno created it also.

I absolutely loved the original. The snes and n64 ogre battles were also top teir.

I disagree. The SNES version was horrible. It had that save bug/glitch that would delete your saved game. It was real. It existed. Then that version was so buggy and the glitches made that version one of the worst games ever.
I believe the trajectory prediction was in the PSP version, however it cost you a skill slot to equip. Usually it was just better to cheese the chariot a thousand ways till Sunday to line up a shot over wasting a slot for it.
As for the font. I am fine with all caps and such. I grew up with plenty of serious comics. I also don’t apply text rules to game text so it’s not really shouts to me.

I just finished all main story routes recently and am currently going through the CODA chapters, I'd definitely give it a solid 8/10 experience (would've been higher if not for the grueling 100 floor dungeon and unit level being capped at lvl. 50). All things considered though it was a great experience, and I do hope that the remake of this game might push Square in remaking the other titles of the series (like March of the Black Queen, etc.). It makes me hope that this might finally push Matsuno to create a sequel to the games, especially since it ended on a cliffhanger with no real payoff all these years later, and this includes MotBQ.

Thanks for the review! I was curious about this one but not getting the info I wanted to know from other reviews. I came in to Tactics Ogre with the PSP version AFTER FF Tactics so I was already spoiled by that game's more streamlined experience. Tactics Ogre was VERY hard for me as I felt a lot of the systems were kind of fussy or vague until I got a handle on em. This version sounds like the one I would most like! Loved the story of this game!

Never played Tactics Ogre, I only played Final Fantasy Tactics and man I love this style, was planing on buying this but my laptop fried ugh!
Once you get back up and running, it's a great one to play if you loved FFT!

Great upload. Reborn is one of my fave games over the last few years and right up there with FF tactics for me. Love it. Would LOVE a FF tactics remaster in a similar vein to this. I honestly think time is gonna treat this remaster REALLY well. People will look back on this game more and more as time goes on as a real timeless classic. I know its a remaster but damn its such a good one.

Huh. 10 years of running various versions of this game, and I've never once noticed the all caps font. Also, fun note, apparently the PSP version technically smudged stuff automatically or something, which is why upscaling that version gave you some super weird results on emulator. Seems it's a result of still technically using many art assets from the SNES version or some such way down in there. Absolutely love this game in all it's forms, and this one is no exception. (They added a bunch of fun interactions to this one to keep it spicy for us long timers. Just recently it was discovered that off element instills are actually a great defensive choice. )

Definitely one of my favorite soundtracks. Sakimoto is my favorite composer of all time. Namely works like vagrant story and radiant silvergun.

Oh, that's interesting. With the voice acting, I've gone 100+ hours into Tactics Ogre: Reborn and never even noticed that the font is an all-caps version. I just remembered it being clear and easy to read. With the sprites, I think they look great. I'm always for new, detailed sprites... but they were a net positive for me, not a negative.
I think my only qualms are that farming gear is a bit of a pain, and Chariot-scumming isn't fun... but I'm not sure it's a huge issue, per se, either. I was worried the difficulty was way too high for players new to TRPGs, but my friends have all been streaming the game, and they use Chariot when they're stuck and the challenge doesn't seem to bother them.
It's weird that this is somehow both the hardest Ogre Battle game ever made... and also very new-player-friendly. If I wasn't seeing the streams, I don't think I'd believe it.
I would have thought that not being able to mix/match abilities from classes (outside Lord and Bodyswap) would have been a deal breaker for me. After all, I love Fell Seal off its character customization alone. And yet... it doesn't? Somehow, each class has enough abilities and variety that I'm kind of okay with how it works.
The old remake, LUCT, was always vying for my top game ever. Reborn is such an improvement that I almost can't imagine another video game coming close to taking the top spot anymore.

When I first heard of this game coming out I pre-ordered mine through the square-enix site. I got my copy the next day of the release date. The fuckers sent me the wrong version. They sent me the PS5 version, I don't have a PS5. I went to GameStop and sold them that copy because square-enix were being asses to me and claimed I was the one that erred in the order. I had receipt copies, THEY messed up. An amazon order and I had the correct version in three days. I know. Who cares about all this? I do. This game is so worth all that hell I went through. While I was waiting for my game to arrive, I had to watch people play/stream this on twitch. I was so amazed at how wonderful the game looked. Yes it's 90s/early 2k graphics but I love this and it still works. It still looks good. This game also brought a resurgence of anti TO:R players that claimed this game was trash and that Final Fantasy Tactics was the better game. So, a huge group of streamers started streaming FFT. I watched. FFT did NOT age well. Don't get me wrong, I love FFT but like I said, it did not age well. Maybe a Final Fantasy Tactics Reborn will be made. If so, I hope they clean it up and update it. The other remake that was wonderful is Crisis Core. I am truly happy with that game. At the moment I do have to say that TO:R truly is the greatest strategy tactical rpg ever. Yes it is. So far.

I'm totally with you when it comes to the smoothed sprites... in this game they kinda ok compared to most games with smoothed pixel art but in general I prefer the original pixel look.

Yes taking away from the original clean pixel art is reductive. I feel like they should make the pixels smaller for larger tvs since we don’t always play on handhelds or small tvs or crts ike back in the day.

In Chapter 4 right now, after grinding out Wicce and currently doing Apocrypha.
I'd say the biggest disappointment here is that they've put a hard limit on the number of abilities you can put on a character. I'm used to the 10-skill list they had implemented with LuCT and am sad to see in Reborn that I can't recreate the glory of a full AVD Swordmaster with Preempt every turn with Knockback IV. Archer Hobyrim's still hilarious though.

Ogre Battle games are great. For people who like RPG are fun and give a great gaming experience. I can't decide if it is the greatest Tactical RPG ever, but definitively is in my top 5 with Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, Vanguard Bandits and Shining Force. One of my favorite genres, a lot of great games to talk about

Right on, those are two amazing games.
The only thing I do not like is the font they used while speaking, it works for bubbles but not for long bars, because like you said it looks like the characters all hate eachother.

They took out the thief class and steal skills, the ai is weak and doesn't know how to use debuffs when poison achieves the highest dps usually.. But i'll still be playing it for years to come even though i already finished it :P

What's weird is I know the title of this game but I don't know if I've ever played it or if I did it could have been that PSP version he was talking about or whatever It would have had to been a long time ago because it just looks like final fantasy tactics to me and that could have been a reason for me to play it I love turn-based strategy RPGs, especially if they have a class or job system kind of like the fire emblem one where a class that can be promoted to a new set of classes , Also or you could do it like final fantasy tactics with the job system where you have to be proficient at certain jobs to unlock new jobs and stuff like that I will always love RPGs that gives me that level of options especially if you have like separate skill trees for all of them I feel like it's another layer of progression that makes you that you can notice yourself getting visibly stronger. That could be a biased opinion because of games like my first MMO was MapleStory and it used a similar system and it was one of the reasons I fell in love with the game

I've never heard of this game before. I'm a big fan of the older fire emblem games - Sacred Stones being one of my all time favourite games.
How similar are they to this game?
I've been trying to search for games that have a similar game play as FE.
Very similar in terms of style of RPG. I would say this is a lot darker than most of the Fire Emblem games in terms of story though.
They're similar in that they're both tactical RPGs on a grid. Tactics Ogre is significantly more complex, though. Fire Emblem's depth comes down to the weapon triangle, armor vs magic, and unit placement. Units can die very very fast if put in a bad position. In Tactics Ogre units are much more durable and battles will be more drawn out. It takes several members of your own army combining fire onto one target to kill them. There's a huge breadth of abilities and spells and finishing moves and status effects for you to play with.
Another key difference is the turn order. Instead of Fire Emblem's player turn/enemy turn, every unit has a dynamic turn placement that constantly changes, similar to how initiative works in Dungeons & Dragons. The more actions you take on a unit on their turn, the slower their next turn will come around. They can also be Hasted or Slowed.
Death is also much different, and is once again reminiscent of Dungeons & Dragons. Instead of a unit dying the moment they're reduced to 0 HP, your units will enter a dying state, and you have 3 of their turns to revive them or finish the battle. This allows you to be much more aggressive in your positioning, and opens up the ability for you to put forth a sacrificial unit to draw enemy fire, because you will have a grace period to pick them back up.
Last thing to mention is how it handles characters. In Fire Emblem, every single unit in your army is a distinct person. In Tactics Ogre and its sibling series (made by the same people) Final Fantasy Tactics, you have generic units who say nothing who will comprise most of your army for most of the game, and eventually you can recruit named characters who have superior stats and sometimes unique classes. Personally speaking, though, I'm fond of the generics. I always end up imprinting on them and growing attached to them as my dudes, and sometimes I feel reluctant to replace them with named characters when they start becoming available.

The one thing about always caps is that it makes it easier for the reader to know what is being said. When you use lower case, there is the risk that it's harder to see which letters are being used. However, this whole issue can be avoided when you use proper spacing between letters when using lower case.
I don't know, I think most people have no issue reading normal text, and are far more used to seeing it in most mediums.
What do you think about FFTA and FFTA2?
I haven't had lots of experience playing them.

I still think the Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions was a better game than this one overall, but this is an easy second place, and much better than the FFT sequels. Mainly I just think that the 10-12 unit army size and enormous battlefields sometimes leads to drawn out gameplay where you spend several turns just trying to get in position to attack. The smaller squad sizes and battlefields in FFT made that game feel much more fast-paced and fun to me.
It's hard to refute any opinion that FFT is better! Both are great games.
Love Tactics Ogre, but still waiting on Shining Force IV......

There's one difficulty level and it's tough as nails.
As tough as it can be, it feels SO rewarding to overcome this game. There's so much depth to it as well. I've been playing since January of '23 and only just this week overcame the Golyat 3 Challenge... arguably the toughest fight the game can offer. Tactics Ogre offers a massive wealth of content.
The amount of people that were complaining on message boards about the level cap was hilarious.

@@Xygor I liked it, made the game a bit more of a challenge and forced you to think actions out more when you couldn't just over level everyone and steam roll battles.

Personally I dislike the level cap. And the sprites being just the old SNES ones just reworked slightly, mostly through filters, rather than newly drawn ones. It just feels less than the PSP version.

I do wish there was an option to switch to the old sprites. I'm not a fan of that smudged pixel look.

Imma be honest the leveling system of the psp version was broken since it was uh well not well balanced. Maybe I am biased since I like the level cap and the challenge (it’s not that big of a challenge) it provides as well as how it contributes to the experience of the story.
Personally in various ways I think the remake is improved version of the psp though not perfect. The remake makes it a lot closer to a strategy game than an rpg though the quite a few rpg elements still exist. It’s worth a go if you like srpgs and a good story but I don’t recommend it to new players since TO is an obtuse game by design.

I like the story path jump and time jump in the psp version. I hated how they gutted everything interesting about the game and made every class the same for the sake of making online versus mode fair.
Squenix slowly learning to properly upscale their ROMs. Nevertheless, when you're charging 50 bucks for a remake, why not *actually REMAKE* it instead of selling an admittedly passable ROM hack?

That said, pretty great minus the leveling system being comepletely removes and it being tied to story is kinda garbo...
I gotta imagine it was SO HARD for you not to immediately just constantly talk about how it looks, feels, and talks like Final Fantasy Tactics. Honestly, if you didn't tell me what this was, I'd think it was a FFT prequel or epilogue or sequel. Like... yeah.

all capitol letters was a bad decision, it does come off as yelling all the time.
I don't mind paying full price, but square repeatedly does mediocre sprite work for their remakes. It's the single thing stopping me from buying the remake and I'd even prefer the older versions with just the updated illustrations and backgrounds than this.
You're right, though I think Live A Live's were fantastic. Hopefully more like that in the future.
I really want to play this game, but i hate the character sprites on the battle field. Everything aside is gorgeous, but I just can't believe no one on the team said that the snes sprites looked great and intense with pixelated beards and clothing, they look blurry and lifeless with a coat of vaseline in the remaster... I hoped that they would put a team on it for an update but it seems they moved on to other projects. Maybe some fans will do I justice someday with a cool mod.

In my opinion, the SNES version it´s the best. The reborn version, just have improvements in 90% of the game, but, the sprites are poor.... Also, this game schould have multyplayer version.
