    One of the best SRPGs ever is also..one of the most unexplained in-game. To be fair, how the hell do you explain all of this without it being a player's handbook?

    I've always thought this game has possibly the most aesthetically pleasing menu design and character portrait art of any game. You'll be spending a LOT of time in menus in TO, but it's just so damn good looking. Really makes me want to replay. I beat the game about 7-8 years ago but never did the extra 100 floor dungeon or whatever it was

    A couple hours into the game (I just got my first necromancer and enchantress) and I'm already looking up strategy guides...
    So much to learn.
    FFT was fun, and I put hundreds of hours into it. I put a lot of time into the Disgea series as well.
    I never knew much about Tactics Ogre except that it had a perma-death feature that was unfun, so I avoided it.
    Well, that just made it so that years later I would still have an old school tactics game to throw myself into, but my god, Tactics Ogre is next level.
    Really enjoying it. It makes long rides on the subway between the Bronx and Brooklyn pass by in no time at all.
    God Bless emulators. To play such a beast of a game for free is truly a blessing.

    Stuff I missed that You should know:
    -Chapter 2 unlocks Crafting. Shields and Helmets are useful all game, even the most basic ones. Especially the debuff immunities from Shields.
    -Monster units can work as ladders.
    -Shield bashing can kill any non-heavy unit not using Steadfast instantly if used on a cliff.
    -Daggers, Bows, and 1h Katanas are notably better at scaling sooner, but can be a pain to get ahold of/have weird late game drawbacks.
    -Leather+1 is some of your best light unit gear until Brigandine
    -Upgraded Shortbows have a Stun Chance
    -Blowguns are insanely good utility items, even if you don't have the skill for them.
    -Thrown is really strong, but expensive to use.
    -Select menu lets you get more details on just about everything. Including what racial type someone is to recruit them.
    -No unit, even with max stats, is ever in god mode. The Solo of this game was pretty dang tense. (ua-cam.com/video/MCuaJ3aSuts/v-deo.html)
    -Read the Warren Report. New stories unlock new events, maps, and more.
    -Units all have a Steal Table, based on Steal Rank. You eventually run out of items to steam from a unit, but they always spawn with a pile of potential stealables that always have a classmark and usually a bunch of random consumables or crafting materials.

      What are the benefits of training cudgels to level 8? a mage it's never gonna go melee because it's a death sentence.
      Or does it level up magic?

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  3 роки тому +1

      @@SatiZakito It can allow the mage to use their stick to a surprising degree of power. While it doesn't boost magic, the magic boosts the stick. It depends might be the better answer. Let's say we have a team of two clerics sparring with their staves for 1 damage while they have no MP available. They to chapter 4 with this, and they likely have 3 Cudgels, 4-5 Aug light. They get a Restoration Staff, suddenly they are benefiting from both, being able to do solid melee damage from this light scaling staff, which also happens to come with a solid free heal move. Suddenly their options have expanded a lot. Their first finisher also scales light, meaning with TP+, they're going to have a solid nuke move available if they need it.

    Also new players need to know that your level is very important. For example, you are too high level you will miss out on certain very good spells, rare crafting material, and equipment. And if you are too low level you will not be prevented from getting them. As a general rule, you want to start your adventure at around level 13 and you need to be 25 (no higher) by the time you reach the hanging gardens. It can also be helpful to do the ancient temples at level 30 to yield a more useful drops of the recipes. However you MUST be at least level 40(many will argue 38) to see the very first forbidden magik spell from either the lich guarding the water temple or after you turn down Xapan when he asks to join you in law path. Each of these level requirements puts you in very tough and sometimes annoying position of having to give up or avoid certain battles. Most new players learn very fast that all you need to do to win every battle easily is enter at a much higher level. This can lock you out of the good stuff if you are too high.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  3 роки тому +1

      True, but I'd say that's more something to come back to. Most folks I've talked to ended the game around 20-25, and that's a pretty consistently good spot to be at. A lot of things here are good to know, but you're not meant to know it all. Sometimes it's good to just let stuff happen.

      My Denam started as a humble footsoldier, but the enemy always run away from him and he wasted turns running after them.
      Then he was a Soldier with sword and ballesta to shot the cowards.
      Then he was a Ninja, made of butter.
      Then he was a Ninja with dual wield and ninjutsu status, and still made of butter but with fortify II.
      Now on chapter 4 trying to kill all that comes his way, even if he becomes a lord the ninja class was leveled enough so another dude can take his place.
      Bottom-line, everything can be good if you stick to it and power it up as you go you will never be OP since the enemies scale levels along with you.

    Also new players need to understand that there are 3 classes in the game that NO CHARACTER with a warren report entry can EVER become: zombie, ghost, and angel. They cannot be skeletons either but it's difficult to call skeleton a class because it's really more of a precursor to other things like angel and scavenge. This means if you've been growing your main character as a valkyrie/rune fencer or if you've been really spending a lot of time working on Presence/Donnalto or one of the sisters, you may feel deeply frustrated or saddened to discover that none of them can ever become a ghost or angel or even zombie. However, yes, most of them can become lich, even your main.

    Love the vid, want to comment on some of your comments.
    One of the most important things I can suggest is that everyone gravitates towards knights. Big tanky units that even limit enemy movements. They are some of the BEST units to spam debuff items, good lord spam them. Especially the tarot cards.
    Exorcism scrolls are actually godly; why put your cleric in danger when anybody can exorcise?
    Archers may be OP, but if you rely on them, like you said, they get screwed post-game.
    Rock throw only run was actually hilarious to see, love it.
    “This is like a 600 hour game” put a huge grin on my face; I still have save files on my psp from high school.
    “The AI doesn’t know how to target (barricades or shadows)” I’m thinking Reborn might have changed that, saw they were “revamping” the AI. Can’t wait for archers to target only protect targets, am I right?
    Wizard gets Lizard has gotta be a pun. My wizard was named Gizzard, btw.
    And of course you had to rile me up with the damn virtuous dance at the end, those fairies have caused SO much grief. Holy crap.

    Also new players need to understand that you get more money from selling your items to the shop directly. If you sell it yourself from the menu or if you have too many of an item and it gets automatically sold at the end of a battle then the profit from the sales is actually lower. The oberyth coins are supposed to be sold EXCEPT for the silver ones. I personally keep around 50 silver oberyths but you prob only need around 30.

      Or, realistically, maybe 5 silvers. Most folks don't lose more than 1-2 on accident, and sacrifice a few more before forgetting about the mechanic. The funny thing is that they actually let you use the half sale mechanic from the inventory for ..some reason. For the life of me, I can't think of when you'd ever need to emergency sell things at half cost that would also allow you to buy things and not sell, but who knows, maybe that's a thing somewhere. It's probably there as a junk toss option that they wanted to use as an overflow mechanic, if I were to guess.

    Wew. So I never gave the game a real chance because when I got my PSP I was fortunate enough to get a lot of games with it, including, you guessed it, FFT:WotL.
    It was one or the other for me, and being a FF fan the choice was obvious. After a while though, WotL lost me. Not only was there the slowdown bug, but even after I fixed that I remembered back to my days playing Knights of Lodis.
    FFTA was my first game in the genre. Fell in love with that, never really got into 2, though I may one day. It was fun and free spirited for most of it, and I enjoyed the mission system and such. There was basically a lot that was in FFTA that wasn't in WotL, for obvious reasons, but it still felt like everything was always an equipment check. "Have I got the best gear I can for every character so I don't get squashed or spend 10 turns huddled around a boss hoping he won't crit me?".
    I got into LUCT not even two weeks ago. I installed OV, hesitant of putting my trust of balancing into the hands of some random individual over a company. I can only take what you and others say for the balancing, but it feels hard. In the best way though, I love the challenge.
    FFTA was just "Alright Marche can go attack as always, White Mage use Protect and Shell, Montblanc get the hell outta my party." It was pretty brainless though I didn't try any post-game stuff.
    My first attempt at LUCT I messed up. I expected ease, so I spent probably half my starting gold playing army simulator, hiring a bunch of units that I'd never make use of, struggling to have much impact in the fights, and then getting bored of how slow they were.
    This time round though, being more invested, maybe because of the OV changes (I definitely have to keep an eye on who can use what in terms of skills, equipment, spells which keeps me engaged), I'm having a blast! I LOVE having to focus on every move I make, I love how random battles scale to your level, I love the branching story knowing there's so much left to play. I'm only halfway through CH2C and I've got so many classes I haven't even tried yet or invested in that I'm excited to try out. I've watched so many of your videos now, while trying to avoid spoilers, and there's so many mechanics.
    You gave some advice, I believe in this one, about using consumables to turn the tide, and it worked so well. I still didn't feel overpowered, I don't want to feel that way, but it felt like such a more effective use of the first few turns, rather than just walking towards the opponent. From there I had to play keepaway with my buffed units, slowing and stunning the enemies that had Dispel and such. Moving the right units towards the right targets, backing them up correctly, even Phalanx adds so much depth and changes the way I can play a map.
    I'm not even used to the weapons yet, not sure of what to use against what. A Hammer Knight seemed good to walk around stunning people, but the hammers he can use seem really limited where I am right now. Just got a few Rogue class marks, so I'll get a couple of those soon to level alongside the one you get early. Under-estimated how useful they would be considering enemies in random battles can have such good equipment and such to steal.
    Anyway, thanks for all your videos and work. Real glad you're around to keep these games being discussed and such. If you ever needed help with videos, let me know. Been learning editing myself recently and am up for experiences. Other than that just keep up the great discussions, the longer the better!

    One of your arguments for weapon diversity kind of reminds me of Shining Force. Centaur knights are amazing at everything and you find lots of them. The problem is that you can only find two endgame weapons for them, so if they're most of your team then a lot of them will be under equipped at the end. Also, some endgame weapons of other types will probably be wasted. Is that the sort of thing you're talking about?

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, it's pretty much exactly the same scenario. The only difference is that while you technically can get more in most cases (you'll only get one of the super awesome ones, like the Ji'Glya set), you never know what you'll get for sure, and it can be really annoying to try and get a specific thing to show up. I think I showed it somewhere, but the Culnicrolonne, culinarynomicon or whatever the spelling for the unihorn spear is...will spawn regularly on enemies, but on a one class challenge years ago, it took me almost a day to get one. This isn't always the case, but it's safe to assume that you won't get what you want...but if you try real hard, you'll get what you need. 😆

    Also new players need to know the difference between the separate alignment choices. Chaos is the easiest route but with the single most rarest and difficult class in the game. And even if you do make it all the way to the Cressida fight and did everything right, you now find yourself in the 2nd most difficult battle of the entire game. Law has the most difficult Balmamusa fight and Brantyn fight but gives some of the most powerful classes while Neutral is the most difficult path of them all, with the most difficult fight in the game of all when trying to rescue Cerya but Neutral has the absolute best story arc and cut scenes and gives the highest value materials for crafting from story battles. Neutral is incredibly difficult due to the careful and constant watch over your relationship to ALL the races while you only need to worry about one alignment on Law and Chaos.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  3 роки тому +8

      I don't think this is as important. Difficulty varies all over, but the CF thing doesn't come into play that often. For Cressida, You can cheese it using hires from the store, and treating them well for a bit. An even halfway decent party should always be running around with options to deal with anything they run into with enough creativity. You could absolutely win almost any battle in the game with gratuitous use of Envenom scrolls and Shortbows. Necros are also available on any route, if that's what you mean. That was a rumor that started early, and still sticks around to this day. Not to be rude, just saying, these generally won't make or break anyone's experience their first time around.

    • @Tony_Cardoza
      @Tony_Cardoza 2 роки тому +2

      I think Law is by far the best story arc, though they are all very good. This game's storyline is top notch.
      In the neutral storyline, I didn't find myself having to watch over my relationships with all the races. Really, the only situation where that even mattered was if you wanted to recruit Cressida like you mentioned, but like the video uploader mentioned, there are workarounds for that too.
      I went Law the first time around, then went and did chaos 2nd, and neutral last after finishing the game on law and getting access to the time travel.
      I love that feature, btw. That you can go back after finishing the game and get any and all characters you may have missed.
      I didn't find any of the fights extremely difficult, though on my first go round, when I was still a newb and didn't really have the game figured out too well, that optional fight against Nybeth in Chapter one, where you're fighting uphill and he keeps re summoning all his undead minions, that fight gave me trouble because I wasn't prepared. I didn't have many exorcism scrolls and I spent too much time attacking his goons rather than going for Nybeth himself.
      Also, the Ch.2 battle on the Law route, outside the Duke's Palace in Almorica, that took an extra try my first time around. Those 2 dragons Modiliani had defending the gates gave my guys trouble.
      I had to do a tiny bit of leveling, I think I got one level more with everyone, and maybe did some smithing for additional +1 equipment, and the fight went fine the second time around.
      I agree with you about that fight defending Crissidia from her dad. It's a relatively tough fight, comparatively speaking. She can die if you aren't careful, and then the monsters can be a handful if you let them get ahead of you.

    I actually happened to find out about Tactics Ogre because of a playlist of N64 game songs. The moment it played Fortune Teller II - Ogre Battle 64, I had to know about the series. At the time, I was searching for a Fire Emblem substitute. I discovered that there was a PSP installment and I'm glad I gave it a try. No, this is definitely no Fire Emblem, but it did feel like it sometimes, at least to me. Personally, I'm the opposite; came for the mechanics, but stayed mostly for the story and characters. Even though I have spent over 100 hours into the game, that doesn't mean it comes without any issues. I didn't enjoy the way the loyalty system was incorporated. I hated the way new classes started at level 1 if you've never used them before. Yeah, it made sense, but it made grinding and investing time into certain characters and classes all the more tedious. And some requirements to get certain units into your army were just plain bullshit. I'm looking at you Deneb!

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, Deneb is kind of a running meme in the series. In MOTBQ, you had to take a huge reputation penalty....then still had to track down and buy her a golden flower bouquet to join. 64 she refused to leave the tutorial. KoL she was arguably the easiest, but still required training a new unit and getting them an emblem that usually has a 4% chance of succeeding. For LUCT, it was not great, but with the right skills, you could see 50-80% odds on those recruits, plus if you get one of each type aside from hydras, you can sort of resource shuffle for all the dragons in one quick grind.
      It's weird, but despite a lot of believing the same stuff initially, I've kind of come to respect the weird choices as intentional. Like the level 1 thing is weird and unintuitive at first, but after learning the system, it mentally becomes this weird currency of Level 1 classes that you can quickly juke for a power spike.
      That's actually why I've been ordered to just do a dang casual/lore run already to show this stuff outside of a challenge run context several times over the years. It slides together from awkward to elegant, and I love that feeling.
      OB64 had a pretty close one with their Soldiers and Centurions. On paper...awkward and useless in the end game. Set up as auxiliary units, they become handy DPS supports.
      I'm glad you found this series, there's a lot to love here, and if ever want a good laugh when looking through soundtracks, give a peek to the Saturn Tactics Ogre port. Interesting remixes, more interesting song names. There was... certainly a story there, and I think it involved not having enough bathrooms in the office.

    Do you have any videos with the ChukThroHard build? Kinda interested.
    Also, I remember crafting being so incredibly frustrating and time consuming that it doesn't bother me to admit that I just used cheats for it to have a 100% success rate even tho I played the rest of the game legit.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  3 роки тому +3

      So funny note on crafting. I covered this in another video, but I was testing a theory a while back that this game was meant to have an Ironman mode because of those crafting%s. It seems like the overall flow of funds was made to allow for getting all of the early important stuff quickly (Shields, helmets and such), but then only get you maybe 1-2 upgrade chances per fight down the road. It may have been misguided, but I think that's what they were going for. People being people, most of us just powered through and called it annoying, but necessary. A bit like a lot of people played New Vegas, and complained that the cazadores blocking the early areas they shouldn't get to overpowered, I suppose. If someone ranks up Steal, however, that skill is basically crafting lube. You can be walking out of fights with Wootz and Baldur bars pretty often. In fact, I think that's what they were going for with the Reaver Ring. You need about 5-6 to start getting the good stuff (it's like moving an elevator up a chart as to how the new drop tables work), but if you get 3 by chapter 3, you can just get the ring and jump straight to 6. I tried that a bit ago, and it's.. actually pretty alright. Yet another of those Guide Dang It moments, but still neat that there was a plan there, sort of.
      Also, ChukThroHard (run posting as soon as I stop hating my editing software):
      Step 1- unequip intro squad, let them die. Warren will still carry.
      Step 2- Take your now Level 6 or so warrior squad, buy plumes, keep stacking this class until you can get Strengthen, Anatomy, and can throw on Thrown as a joke. Buy Areion plumes, use Denam and Canopus to carry while the rest throw around rocks to train anatomy. You can take strengthen off of them and replace it with Counter to train Anatomy faster. You will have to beat your first true Knight boss doing, at best, 3 damage at a time. He will eventually run out of MP, and Leonar will likely carry.
      Step 3- keep this up until Strengthen 2, this will give you enough punch combined with a strengthen buff to actually use other classes. It's a good time to invest in Lion Dance if you can afford a few from all those weapons you haven't been buying. Mass strengthen is good, but not technically having a weapon means ninja scrolls won't give you poison buffs, sadly. Equip everyone with the highest Str and Dex bonuses you can find. Aspis+, Leather+, Bronze+/Gauntlet is a solid setup.
      Step 4-Go Archer, Knight, Zerk, Tamer, and any advanced classes you've found by this point. Take them from 1-7 at one time with the 7 in Tynemouth trick. Go back to Warriors for the story until Strength 3.
      Step 5- Follow story until Brigandine is unlocked, and hand out Brigandine+ with Nomads as soon as you can get them. Finesse or Luck rings are handy at this point if you can make or find them. Take your remaining physical level 1s and stack train them. Clerics and wizards will likely need to be ignored for lack of strengthen, but if you're already landing double digits with them, or don't mind using Strengthen and Breach to do any damage, go for it.
      Step 6- switch to Berserker for the story, and keep pummeling with your meteors made from pebbles. If your anatomy is above 4-5, you take on Phorampa. Take the right path at the first branch, and go to the end. Those terror knights drop food items. Keep running this gauntlet until you're sitting on a stack of items to cheese boost Canopus' stats to the moon. You can also take random battles until the Berserker is level 38 for that sweet Strength 4.
      Step 7- beat game. With maxed Anatomy and Strength 4, as well as lion scrolls, Brigandine, Nomads ...or if you're sitting on a bunch of rare materials at this point, Nomads+, you should be stacked enough to be able to do decent damage against Templars. If not, take more Level 1 classes from Deneb's shop, or train everyone to tame dragons/Gryphs, and eat your way to GODHOOD.
      Step 8- if you want to achieve even more absurd power, you're going to need to beat POTD like this. Deadalus Gauntlets from Secrets of the Master as well as a few other pieces of gear give you Anatomy+1-2. You can max that mess at 16 theoretically. In theory, the whole DLC should be winnable with that, but I haven't gotten there yet.
      As you may have guessed, this build...takes a while.

      It's not just items, but that's the thing, there's so many ways to shift around damage in this game, but most folks just went back to grinding. It's partly why I was doing the Sub Optimal series, showing how far you can get with no grinding, shops, or even extra stops. One Shotting bosses with starter weapons is still possible into the end game, surprisingly. Granted, it gets a bit silly when doing everything at a massive deficit, but it doesn't take a massive grind to accomplish stuff was my point.

      So that mission technically is one of the ones I mentioned as doable, but it's DLC, so they couldn't add multiple versions of the fight, so it's locked to this mid level situation (normally fights have a low and high variant for where your party's at and world state, this one doesn't.) Basically this means they're going to be running post game gear and skills, but this is still doable.
      The best thing you can do early is to break the barricade before it happens. A low equip weight flying Warrior with Rampart Aura, a Shield, and HP Infusion or Barricade works fairly well here. Low weight for acting first, Rampart for body blocking, and the shield for moving away anyone without Steadfast. Have anyone throw out a Fortify and Dodge on Azelstan (petrify works best for Cressida, he's actually a pretty solid unit when he's not supported), and use a Wheel of Fortune card to warp a Knight with Guardian Force next to him. Using Paradigm Shift scrolls, you can make sure he's out of there, protected by a knight, and you're in position before anything too crazy happens. From there, use any heavy bombard units, like Archers and Rogues to damage, setting up with a Spellstrike/Fear spell and Breach should make it a two shot.

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  2 роки тому

      High ground gives range, not damage. Archers are fine for most of the game, but by the end they will likely have stacked crazy bonuses. Due to range, they tend to train faster ..which means maxing out proficiency faster ..which means giving full training to Anatomy faster....which means they get past armor easier. This is still just a mild improvement by the end. Once their elemental longbows hit, though, they have access to their top end gear before anyone else, which means they can use augments effectively sooner....plus they use two common armor upgrades for massive Dex bonuses in the Brigandine+1 and Nomad+1. On top of that, Bows, Daggers, and 1H Katanas get better scaling damage at the cost of penetration.
      That all said, they also get some really solid finisher options, with crossbows getting a pretty much guaranteed insta kill at rank 8.
      That all said, surprisingly almost any class can counter them in an AI Tournament

      @CoffeePotato  2 роки тому +1

      Armor basically dictates the damage that goes around, and can be seen like the New Vegas threshold system. Your weapon has an Atk score, armor has a Def score. Skills raise Atk and Accuracy, and the only way to decrease Def is Fear. If you don't get much damage, it's because it's not beating armor, and you'll want to find other ways to deal with that unit. Basically it's this slew of misunderstandings that have been around since launch..like Strengthen or Breach not working, when all they affect is scaling damage, or certain gear being bad, when all it needed was a different build. So...Weapon Skills, Augments, Racial Skills, and Fear are the only things that can change the Atk or Def numbers, and those numbers decide if you get all the bonuses a lot of weapons carry around. If not, there's always just bashing them down, gravity, poison, or whatever else tickles your fancy that day.

This gives some fragmenting in the victory screen, but usually throws it into clean FPS all around. It's a fantastic emulator, and even uses the same chest format as a normal PSP.

      Yup, every skill goes all ways. You can test it in any damage dealing scenario, but I first heard about it when the programming quirks were being discussed for the OV Mod a bit ago. But yeah, all weapon, racial, and elemental skills will apply +4 Atk and +3 Acc as relevant. This also applied in reverse when relevant. So like having axes 2 when being hit by someone with axes 3 will reduce them to the Atk bonus of just having Axes 1, meaning that defensively, they apply a damage threshold bonus. This doesn't seem like much, but that initial Atk check is basically the start of the calculation, and getting past armor scales all your damage with a ton of bonuses. It's complicated, but I friggin love this system.

  • @rompevuevitos222
    @rompevuevitos222 2 роки тому

    idk if you mentioned, but there's a stupid design choice (among many honestly) where buffs and debuffs don't work if the target unit is at least 1 level lower than the attacking unit
    This means that if you apply strengthen to your unit of lvl 30 and it attacks a unit with lvl 29 or lower, the buff is ignored entirely and it deals normal damage
    This also applies to the fortify skill (it also becomes weaker at later levels) and the strengthen skills to a lesser extent

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  2 роки тому

      That's not correct. Damage buffs and debuffs only scale up and down bonus damage. There is no check on level there. If your attack gets past enemy defense threshold, all applicable bonus damage is added to the final result. If not, you get none of it. This was rumored to be for all sorts of reasons before, but now that there's people that actually dug through the code, we know that it's an armor penetration thing. Weapon skill boosts penetration, so this also factors in.
      So let's take an example.
      Unit A is firing a Damasc +1
      They have bows Rank 2.
      They're looking at 87 base attack, a roughly 15% chance to stun. 8 Attack and 6% accuracy are added from Rank 2.
      If they break past armor, they have a 14% damage modifier from the pierce property on the bow, and another 10% if attacking a Golem.
      So roughly 93 before calculating for Vit, Dex, and buffs.
      The unit they're hitting is wearing full Wyrmscale and using Anatomy at Rank 2
      So 35 Def from the body, 31 off of the helmet, and Def 21. The ring is another 8.
      So roughly 93 with everything.
      This is then scaled down by Vit, racial defenses, and prevailing element. (There's a % bonus damage reduction based on race, type, and element on all of the above pieces of armor) Prevailing element is basically map state, where elements that check skill will change what elements can do on every map. This doesn't boost penetration, but does increase the maximum damage of things. Usually you won't see this come up much, but if you ever saw a dark scaling finisher go nutso in the POTD, that's why.
      Anyway, with all of the above, the defenses basically nullify the weapon. Scaling 0.2 or whatever by 15% doesn't scale very far, it's still a 1-2. If, say, they had Rank 4 bows and rank 2 anatomy on the attacker, that instead becomes 16 x bonus damage, which can get pretty significant when you stack a bunch of bonuses. It's why elemental weapons go nuts when they get past armor...because they're getting the standard bonus of 8-15% or so, plus elemental, plus prevailing, plus possibly racial too.
      So point is, all that the buffs do is scale that second part of the equation. If there is nothing to boost, they will seem like they do nothing. Level is never checked.

      @@CoffeePotato I do know about the whole misconsception on armor penetration (it puzzled me for a while but some browsing of the forums gave me the info i needed which i then confirmed)
      But what i mean is, some buff debuffs are straight up ignored in certain circumstances (vanilla only afaik)
      It's not a matter of scaling as you said, it's a matter of having it counted in the damage calculation or not
      I confirmed it by doing turns with a buff/debuff in the enemy and then retrying (with tarot wheel) but without said effects, the damage didn't change regardless of having either applied
      It only seems to happen if you are above the level of the target, as a method of "balance" in case you try to overlevel
      And the common conclusion may be "well, there just wasn't enough damage to make a difference", but not only i did it with the godly vanilla archers, i also tried it with the heavy knight that was of the same level (so buffs/debuffs aren't ignored in that case) and the damage changed as expected

      @@rompevuevitos222 While the general rule of thumb is that there's always new mechanics to discover (seriously, charm and sleeo using line of sight, that's just something else)...but there's no mechanic for checking levels like that. There's a lot of things that can cancel out bonus damage, from Fortify to racial defenses to weapon skills (weapon skills also add armor in reverse), armor type may be cancelling out that specific bonus damage (highest anti human armor setup is like 85% bonus damage deficit), there's a lot of factors. If you're familiar with the One Vision damage calculator, it may help to clarify what's going on there.

      And when tested with another unit in the exact same way but with an equal level the damage changed as expected
      From what i'm getting from your comment, is that some defense bonuses only reduce bonus damage from things like buffs? because if not it still wouldn't make sense for what i saw
      And i repeat, i do know about the whole armor penetration misconception, but this isn't really related to that because i was already doing like 80 damage and with strengthen it remained at 80 when attacking the underleveled unit

    • @CoffeePotato
      @CoffeePotato  2 роки тому

      @@rompevuevitos222 If it doesn't break threshold, it doesn't scale, that's the rule there. It sounds like you're having two archers fire at each other in the vanilla game, correct? If so, Bows and Anatomy on one unit would cancel out equal ranks on another. Same as Strengthen and Fortify will cancel out equal ranks. If an opposing element was also prevailing on the map, this could also wipe out bonus damage with enough intensity (as shown in some recent videos.). What ranks, skills, gear, map element breakdown did you run this test with?
      There's also a lot of old tests from gamefaqs and such that had come up with a ton of theories about how different stuff worked, and full confirmation/debunking of these things only recently came to light. Personally, I've been running a bunch of tests to see how far Prevailing Element actually affects things, and found that even Shot Grenades can actually be scaled up, basically getting no benefit from strengthen or augments, but through a combination of specific PE boosts, Breaching and scaring the target, can go from 1 damage to the several 100s. As a side note .. divine and dark boost themselves, but most of the other elements work in reverse for some reason.

You might think warriors fight, clerics heal. No. Everyone heals all the time or you die. I have never healed more in my life. It’s ALL YOU DO. HEAL HEAL HEAL HEAL HEAL HEAL HEAL. And oh ya, heal doesn’t heal. It heals like, a quarter of an attack. Meaning you need like 4 characters to use a heal to make up for one move attack.
    Status magic won’t work in this game. You might think if you have a sleep magic move that it will sometimes put an enemy to sleep and sometimes miss. No. It ONLY misses. It simply isn’t a move in the game.
    So that said, bows are shit, healing is shit that doesn’t work. Status magic is shit that isn’t in the game. Won’t EVER land.
    So I’m not sure where the fun is. Just play Final Fantasy Tactics for nostalgia or Disgaea for a modern series.

      It's because you are trying to play this game by another's rules. This game is dramatically more complicated in it's systems, and has been for over a decade. For example, bows scale well, but suffer vs armor. For example, Breach and Fear increase incoming damage and lower thresholds, so archers would effectively shred them from a mile away.
      Debuffs are quick and cheap, but you can make them land effectively with Spellstrike, available from buff items or skills. Mind also helps to land them, and, in some cases, slowing down the target may help as well. In FFT, there was effectively resistances and damage output, but TO has armor thresholds and situational interactions. If you saw 0% sleep chance on a caster, likely this was due to them being poisoned, since having a fever prevents you from sleeping.
      Funnily enough I just made a video on this today. Technically over 100 like it before, but this one's from today, dang it. ua-cam.com/video/_mIMVV2csyg/v-deo.html
