So the one thing Reborn is showing, is that there's a LOT more Ogre Battle fans than I had thought.
Which begs the question...why haven't we gotten more?

I've got my theories: Tactics Ogre on PSP didn't sell as well as Square Enix wanted, Matsuno (series creator) has said in interviews that he doesn't like doing the same thing and most of all Square Enix's mismanagement from FFXII until maybe FFXV. But if we all buy 10 copies of Tactics Ogre: Reborn hopefully we'll get that long awaited sequel!

@@TheTacticalRPGOdyssey I would imagine that game devs have not figured out that we just want an updated version but not completely different. Like Xcom. There was a mod out there that updated the original version with more weapons, more tech, more enemies, etc etc. But the new version, while introducing some new elements that are interesting. It is not the original just updated.

Person of Lordly Caliber is the GOAT! A cool, stylish experimental rts for its time that hasn't been replicated.
As a 6 year old back then I had no idea what I was doing and still won by throwing numbers of undead spawn. The ccockatrice was the hardest enemy for me because I couldn't read well and find out an antidote was a thing among others. I still knew ridding myself of enemy leaders was the only way to win and the game encourages it. Alignments? Cause for war? Waifus? This ain't rocket science or fire emblem hoo ha. This is a one sided omega m@ssacre of the surface or so I told myself.
Black Cauldron , nightmare before Christmas and waw zombies were all the rage for me.
I try to play other games similar to it. Like final fantasy but they don't scratch the etch. Mainly because for the lack of better words they play like eastern heavily pixelated turn based mobile phone games and their not for me.
Turn based games like xcom, paper mario, hard west, darkest dungeon, wasteland, divinity original sins are more my jamm.
Just like Battalion Wars that came from a turn based series Advanced Wars.
I don't believe will see the light of day unless the mother series gets a lot of success.

This game desperately needs a modern HD remaster.
It's one of only 2 great N64 RPGs, while also being the best of the 2 (imo). It's got a unique battle system that plays out mostly by itself, as classes/preparation/strategy beforehand matter most.
The in game choices, differing paths to recruit new characters & multiple endings offer a ton of replayability. Please Square Enix, give us an HD-2D remake of this game!

I wish I had gotten to beat this game but I never owned a 64. The first Ogre Battle game is still my favorite console SRPG but while my best friend owned this he didn't own it long and I only made it midway through chapter 2 before he sold it. I remember around the time I got my PS2 I read a rumor in a magazine that this was being ported to the PS2 and I was very excited but obviously the port never happened.

Unicorn Overlord was a toe dip compared to this game, the class depth, the unit formation depth, and the units themselves, it didn’t even come close to doing Ogre Battle 64 justice, much less the game mechanics. In one playthrough, to get hidden characters and classes and basically do everything possible and get everything correct, I had over 200 hours in it….a 64 game….i got the platinum trophy for UO in about 80 hours.

I loved this game. But I kinda think the Chaos mechanics are terrible.
They're barely explained in the game, and it's extremely difficult to affect the morale of a unit unless you're using the item duplication glitch. Even if you are, it's still just a distraction from the fun tactical decision to say "Oh wait, I can't move this unit into this city" a dozen times on every stage.

    • @TheTacticalRPGOdyssey
      @TheTacticalRPGOdyssey  Рік тому +2

I agree. I think it could've been implemented and a explained more clearly. It's essentially the game's difficulty option but I would like to see a new Ogre Battle game with a more nuanced approach where maybe capturing the town awards you more rewards but raises your Chaos Frame versus liberating for less rewards but maybe the enemy would have a harder time recapturing because the townsfolks like you. IDK hopefully one day we'll find out!

I haven't watched the vid yet but I'm gonna lol, I wouldn't say this is the best RPG by a Longshot, though it is awesome. The game is horribly balanced with females essentially being trash unless the cast offensive magic, and males being regulated to one of three classes, with one of them being limited to at most 4-5, unless you make them mages as well, in which case just don't make females.
It's a great game, but because of the simple scope of the game play, the game is not easy to balance.
