Matches and, in the case of XIII & XV, vastly exceeds those games. Heck, Lost Odyssey is just as good as _Final Fantasy VI._
Fact.
I mean, Sakaguchi is the one behind Lost Odyssey so yeah it is.
Absolutely, I liked it more than anything past 11 but it holds a candle to the older ones too! Glad it did cos I basically got a Xbox360 for this game😅

I've sincerely considered photoshopping a better version of this and making it the actual sleeve for the case.
At the time, I called Lost Odyssey the real Final Fantasy 13. I stand buy that it. It's one of the best JRPGs I've every played and I've played more than I can count.
Underrated is a major understatement..
Sadly the game was overlooked by almost everyone.
This game is an absolute gem and must play for any fan of JRPGs.
So true!
to me it's the last "real" final fantasy game... by the creator of the saga, with a turn by turn combat system, and an amazing soundtrack from Uematsu.
Its not underrated when everyone says its an all time great game. Too many people use that word incorrectly.
Like the video said, Overlooked is more fitting, but I've read it was a hit in its time so maybe forgotten is more accurate as this game seems to only pop up when someone asks for a RPG game recommendation.
@@Ermac_______________________69 I thought it got mixed reviews upon release from what I could recall, and had no idea it had any commercial success. It's what prompted me to find this video after starting to hearing the buzz about it fairly recently.
@@Ermac_______________________69not at all i rememeber almost missing that game because of all the bad review it as, jrpg was really at it lowest at the time and a dying genre in that era.
I randomly picked this up as a teen. First game that made me actually cry. I might look at other games and say, "That's sad." but I wouldn't feel much besides acknowledging it. I was so glad no one was home during a certain scene as I balled my eyes out.
Right on, definitely a lot of emotional moments!
Crazy, i got this game on a whim when i was stationed in CA at our PX store. No clue what it was or ANYTHING. echoing your experience, i cried my little eyes out for the first and only time during this game. Just strange to read that someone else had the exact experience
You’re talking about the lirum scene aren’t you
As someone just now playing it, I can say the Memory segments alone, gets me teary eyed and that's just text!
Can't do more than one at a time, but other than those, the Funeral segment was rough, especially as you had to play as the kids in some segments 😭
It’s one of the best JRPG ever made. That transition from CGI into battle was creators showing “this is what we can do with graphics now” moment. It was amazing graphically for that era
It really was!
It was certainly better than ffxiii at the time and still is. Had the names and talent behind it. Just didn't have the brand recognition. Square made a mistake in firing the creator of Ff and they are feeling the effects till this day.
Lost Odyssey was amazing one of the best jrpgs
If not the best for the system, one of the best of its era!
In my top 20 games of all time, which is no mean feat as I've played ALOT of video games the past 30 years. It desperately needs a remaster, so many missed out on this due to it being a 360 exclusive. Such an incredible game.
That is indeed high praise!
I loved it!!! Especially the little novellas!
It's still available on the Xbox One/Series digital stores so is awaiting anyone who wants to play it.
There’s a port for it. It’s deffo on my “get to” list
@@Davidc10 nice!
10yrs ago I would have said AVGN had the best retro gaming channel. 5 yrs ago I would have said SNES Drunk.
But today, no doubt, is Xygor.
You're killing it, man. Presentation is top notch and never long winded or bogged down with segments that seem like they were written for the sake of reaching a 'total word count'. Nice, smooth flowing vids that come to natural conclusions.
Stay smooth, boa
Wow, thanks a ton! That is huge praise considering I love both of those guys.
The intro of this game is my favourite to this day. This game gave me amazing bonding moments with my dad as a kid and playing it now as an adult the themes and story I didn't notice as a kid is amazing!
Played it around the time it came out on the Xbox. I think it may be my favorite game of all time. I was so invested I 100% it, and I usually don't do that. It is also quite a feat because there is a TON of side-content. I think you can complete the game having only seen like 40% of the available content.
Probably my favourite game for the 360, easily one of the best RPG's that came out for it. The ring system was brutal early on but when you got the rhythm down you could just decimate enemies so easily. One bad thing though was the case, Microsoft was cheap with there cases for multi-disc games.
I agree, it's the best game for the system.
Definitely one of my favorite JRPGs of the 3D era. I still go back and play occasionally.
It’s worth doing that!
Im currently playing through this right now and I do not play a lot of RPGS let alone JRPGS, this has to be one of the best games I have played. The whole immortals plot and the side stories have to be the best writing ive seen in a video game and I am not lying
its also one of the hardest I've played too :(
It really is great, isn't it?
The side stories are so good! When I played it years ago, I absolutely had to play it a second time, with a guide to show me how to unlock every story. I didn't want to miss a single one. Man, I need to figure out how to replay this.
Couple critical things about this game that should be mentioned.
During the critical time of it's development Microsoft essentially founded a company called feelPlus to help Mistwalker. The team specifically had tons of people from Sacnoth/Nautilus which had just gone under. So you had literally the guys that made the Shadow Hearts series shadow-developing this game, on-top of some staff Microsoft grabbed who worked on Legend of Dragoon. That rhythm ring combat system makes a ton of sense in-terms of where it came from.
A lot of that development difficulty came from Unreal Engine 3. Very limited Japanese documentation, and this was early days in Unreal 3's life-span and here these guys were making a turn-based JRPG with it. Not the easiest thing to do, actually sounds like a real nightmare. Probably one of the reasons why it runs so poorly on original 360 hardware.
I had no idea about the “shadow development.” Thanks for this!
Yeah its amazing this dream team has only made 1 game, best devs in the industry. Shadow Hearts is so much better comparison rather than FF its ridic
@@icessoup I still need to play Shadow Hearts!
@@Xygor Yeah they are in prison as well, the company that made those is obsolete and who knows who has the license for them. Only way to play is PS2 which sucks :/
@@icessoup interesting!
Really wish more people could experience this gem of a game. A port at least is sorely needed.
Totally agreed!
It's on the Xbox One/Series digital store so awaiting anyone who wishes to play it.
@@user-un6ff9er4h Getting a compatible Xbox is dirt cheap, as are these games. If people want these games the effort is minimal.
@@user-un6ff9er4h Naaaw it's just another easy option and view rather than wasting time dreaming of ports.
@@TheRealRetroBeard or you could just emulate it on your PC
Almost all of those short stories made me weep for the characters.
They were definitely heart-wrenching!
This game was definitely a great hidden gem of the 360. Still have my copy, but never got around to finish it as life got in the way at the time, and my 360 eventually just got forgotten after much use. Such a beautifully-made game, and all the little memories written in very beautiful prose, along with the great soundtrack... yeah, this game definitely hits as one of my favorite solo/non-mainline RPGs ever.
Couldn't agree more!
So buy it digital, play on a pc or steam deck.
@@sagepirotess6312 how can you buy it digitally on pc? lol the game isn't available on PC, and I'm pretty sure the Steam Deck isn't powerful enough to run 360 emulation.
@@jimmythegamer2231 yes the deck can play it.
If u have xbox one or series x u can play it In those consoles too. Its backward compatible. I just bought it for 7 €, was on sale In xbox store.
This game brought me to tears. A pure masterpiece. To be honest. Only FF7 beats this game. This game was a novel. It should be hailed as the greatest of games.
Agreed, a pure masterpiece!
I very rarely cry in general. But when Lirum died and Kuke and Mack where singing the lullaby for Sarah with the playclock music the floodgates where open.
The timing ring is more like the judgement ring from Shadow Hearts.
Also imho Lost Odyssey is a masterpiece that could easily stand alongside the masterpieces of today!
Right on!
I had no idea about it, had no plans to buy it. Saw a commercial for it, the song playing was Jefferson Airplanes White Rabbit.
I pre-ordered it that day. Music in games can be powerful.
It's pretty fun, and such a different mechanic for fighting. Edit to say: I just remember that I had to get a new HD TV (non-CRT) just to play this game, because the quick time event rings during combat were impossible to see on my CRT. Still worth it.
Yeah, a few other people have mentioned that trailer too!
lol a Lost Odyssey commercial with Jefferson Airplane ?? Now thats a trailer right there damn
I still remember that trailer specifically because of their use of White Rabbit. I couldn't tell you anything about pretty much any other video game trailer (minus Journey)
@@BrittanyNgo01 right, classic commercial!
If you’re not interested in this great game at least consider reading the short stories within. It’s a minimal time commitment to see if they’re your thing but the reward is discovering some of the best tales about death I’ve ever seen.
The very first one was absolutely crushing when I read it for the first time.
Right on, I agree!
The A Thousand Years of Dreams short stories collection is a literature masterpiece.
It totally is!
Great review. I just finished the game this morning on my series X for the 1st time and it was trully a magical experience. Definitely 1 of the best undiscovered rpgs
Great game!
The short story/memories idea was so well implemented (and written) that it will stick with me for a long time.
I'm always going to keep my physical edition, so I that I can eventually replay it without any hassle.
I agree, those stories are so well written, and some are just emotionally riveting. This game really touched the player in ways few other RPGs did.
Legit, I can barely go through one of them at a time, before I feel like bawling my eyes out!
The best story sequence was the man in prison of total darkness. I can't remember the actual name. Although almost all of them were great. Much love xygor as always
Thank you, I appreciate you posting this memory!
I finished this game 2 weeks ago with all immortals and with old guy with level 75! Great game
Excellent!
I thought this game was just ok... but that over world song is indeed one of the finest songs for an overworld map around.
Fair enough, appreciate the feedback as always!
This game is fantastic. I picked this up randomly one day from my local game store. Absolutely fell in love with it. One of the best games I’ve played. I wish for a remaster. 👍
Couldn't agree more!
I rented this game on gamefly. Never heard about it, nor did I see any marketing upon it's release, but I was a huge fan of RPGs at the time and gave it a shot. I only beat this game once but remember it to be a wonderful hidden gem Xbox 360 exclusive experience. Even the secret bosses were dope to find and beat.
Excellent, glad you have great memories of it too!
I still have the guide for this game and have hoped and prayed for a remastered Playstation version. I can't think of anything bad about it they nailed everything that I love about RPG games
For sure! Hopefully will at least get a Steam release some day.
Hopefully I'd hate to see it fade away with the system it was released for like mario rpg. I'm 29 so when mario rpg was big I was playing super mario world and donkey kong country, rpgs weren't even on my radar yet but steam release would be perfect. Although I was lucky enough to get my hands on and almost beat illusion of gaia.
Summer holidays 2017 I played this with my cousin Trey, what a privilege that was
I loved Lost Odyssey, as well as Resonance of Fate. I played both around the same time and was quite surprised to find two great RPG's on the Xbox 360.
Howl of the Departed is up there with One WInged Angel and Otherworld for best final boss themes. But my favorite song from the game is probably House of the Witch, I don't know why, but there's just something about that track. It is one that truly feels haunting.
Thank you for the Resonance of Fate recommendation, I haven’t played it before.
Yeah, Nubuo Uematsu is truly a great composer. I'd say Necron's Theme and Howl of the Departed are both fitting final boss theme.
@@Xygor The combat takes getting used to, but once you understand how the run-and-gun'ing, and scratch/direct damage works, it is a lot of fun.
The story is also convoluted af, and I remember it only made sense to me after playing the game 3 times. However it's been years, so I sadly couldn't explain it now. :P
The characters, and particularly the setting/world, are fantastic though.
@@planescaped I appreciate all your memories of the game!
well the xbox 360 was the best console for JRPG at this time... Tales of Vesperia was also an xbox exclusive... xbox used to be good
Always love when someone sheds light on sleeper gem games.
I've called this game "Sakaguchi's real Final Fantasy X"
Good to see you spreading the word on this game. I played it just a few years ago for the first time and it felt like an alternate universe where Final Fantasy went in another direction.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Lost Odyssey was the first video game to make me cry and is my favorite game of all time. If it ever got ported to pc i'd buy it again in a heartbeat.
Right on! Isn't it great?
Currently playing it with my friend. We both love JRPG's and he is collecting all kinds of rare and obscure games lost in time.
Really enjoying it up untill now! Gotta love Jansen!
Great, glad you are enjoying it!
It was one of those games that hooked me up daily. I loved it.
Right on!
Lost Odyssey belongs right amongst the very best Final Fantasy games from their golden age. It's an incredible game that I've never forgotten.
Right on!
At the end of disc 1 now and enjoying it a bunch. I'm catching up on stuff I missed out from the 360 library and this ones a highlight
Definitely one of the top games on the system, if not the top.
Bringing me back to my senior year of high school. Loved the story, gameplay, and the soundtrack. Was definitely better than FFXIII in my opinion.
So many great things about this game! It was definitely better than FFXIII in my eyes.
I actually just picked this game up while on sale over the holidays through the Series X. I have quite a backlog right now but I'll be checking out as soon as I can.
It's definitely worth getting to as soon as possible!
holy heck dude you just reattached a synapse in my mind there, this game was really good and 1 of the very few xbox games i played at the time, thanks very much
Glad you enjoyed!
I fucking loved Blue Dragon, I thought it was amazing when I played it. I've yet to play Lost Odyssey but after watching this, I'll have to check it out!
Great! I will have to cover Blue Dragon soon.
Let me tell you, those short stories haunted me. I found the book that many of the stories came from only to discover that it had never been translated into English. I work in the book world so I decided to start a quest to see what I could do. I thought that it surely had to of been translated because the stories were in English for the American release. I ended up tracking down the guy who did the translation, Jay Rubin. Essentially, he had done some translations of the dream stories for the game and those translations were the property of, you guessed, Microsoft. And that was as you'd think a complete brick wall. But it was fun to put some real effort into a lofty idea and I got to chat with Jay many times about the stories and his work in general.
I remember the first playing this game and seeing the game’s magic names and skill building was so familiar to final fantasy. Mindblown!! I love this game so much and played it everyday!
Also finishing it as well! Super Underrated!
Thank you for covering this game!
Btw Seth is Best Girl!
Great, I am glad you got so much joy out of the game, and like the review! This was a fun one to cover.
Will never forget this game!
Great! It's memory lives on.
Loved this game. Still have a sealed copy in my collection. Had also great music.
Yep, the music is amazing! What a classic.
amazing game with an amazing soundtrack. fond memory playing through this game
So many awesome memories in it!
I never beat it, it was so long and slow. But really enjoyed it
Glad to hear it!
13 years ago I didn't finished game, last boss was to difficult. Now I want to play this game again in Xbox Series S, but for old game is to expensive :( I am in very deep thoughts
Wow never thought I'd see a video about this hidden gem. I never got to finish it though myself 😕
Hope you enjoyed it!
This is a great game
It truly is a forgotten classic. Hopefully this will help to make it a little less forgotten!
WOW! This is a true gen and I own two copies one to play and the other is sealed. I beat the game twice. The story, graphics and game play are a masterpiece. So glad to see LO getting some love!
Right on, glad you loved it too!
I've always wanted to play this game. Just waiting for the day that it's released on PC.
Right on, hopefully soon!
Lovers of the mainline Final Fantasy games owe it to themselves to check this out. Just wish it was a little more accessible, as Xygor says. A straight port to Steam and/or Game Pass is all it would take.
Agreed! Glad you liked it as much as me.
Freakin LOVE This game, i had to rebuy it for my Xbox One digitally a few years ago, and replaying it was a nostalgia trip!
Isn't it great?
I actually played this game around the time it came out and I thought it was legitimately bad ass. I could be slightly misremembering but I feel like they did such a good job with revealing Kaim's past memories and the reason why he is the way he is and what not. AWESOME game, combat system was a lot of fun once I got haste and all that stuff too, at that point I was just destroying enemies and it felt awesome.
Right on, I agree!
You're referring to the 1000 Years of Dreams
You aren't misremembering, in fact you are underrating just how phenomenal and emotional those stories were. I'd highly recommend you look them up on UA-cam.
@@harryosbourne451 they're so great!

Short answer: Yes.
Long answer: Yes, sadly it was and still is incredibly overlooked.
The game was great, it just had the misfortune of releasing on the "dudebro" console, and people on the "dudebro" console wanted Madden, Gears, Halo, COD... At least the Microsoft store offers the game at a reasonable price and is a good port.
The game was too ahead of its time with its adult narrative and thought-provoking themes, "A Thousand Years Dream" was the icing on the cake and is a game that can make any grown-man cry.
Finally ma boi Kaim is getting some love! Lost Odyssey is a true hidden gem in the xbox 360 along side The Last story of wii.
It really is. I haven’t tried The Last Story.

There are a lot of heart-wrenching moments like that in it, aren't there?
Xygor, can you compare the sound level of your videos to some others?
It is not too quiet, but it seems to me you can raise it a bit. I watch your videos with the sound level set to the maximum, while it is not necessary for most other channels.
I don't know about the circumstances that made it a 360 exclusive, but if this game was a multi-platform it would've been a completely different outcome without a shadow of doubt.
Absolutely true!
The random encounters in this game gave me haldol
Fantastic game, watched my roommate play it in college and the reason why I still have an Xbox console. The vignette short stories are the key to the richly crafted world and I usually hate that kind of story telling.
It really does, they were expertly written. A heartbreaking tale that really makes you question a lot of things.

Yeah Sakaguchi was working with devs from Shadow Hearts and Legend of Dragoon on this game, so youre right it has similarities

Fantastic!
I grew up with this game and it moulded me into a JRPG enthusiast! It was awesome to see you review ny my childhood, and I also appreciate the critiques, it sucks that this will probably never see a sequel, but honestly I'd rather remember it this way than the game that Final Fantasy has become after Sakaguchi left. Thanks for an awesome review of my childhood and I hope you had a nice holiday season!
Glad you liked it! I love this game but I don't think it's absolutely flawless. Close enough though!
I forgot about this game.
The ring system for combat was very reminiscent of LoD addtions on the PS1
It was a really interesting story too if I recall, but my 3rd xbox red ringed on me, and I made the switch to playstation. (That ps3 still works 10+ yrs later) and haven't looked back.
Anyways. Time to watch the video xD
I hadn't thought of the LoD comparison, thanks for pointing that out! Good ol' rings of death!
@@Xygor well I hadn't thought of the FFX or FFIX comparisons to combat and skills respectively, but those are pretty fair characterizations.

It's definitely one of the best! Blue Dragon is great too!
@@Xygor I have Blue Dragon as well and yes it is great.
This game remains on my backlog since I can’t find a emulated copy free of bugs and random crashes. And I gave away my Xbox right before I rediscovered the game 😢
That sounds like pretty bad timing!
I remember hearing of this game at the time, but I had no idea it was written by FF guy and had music by the FF composer. I would have definitely picked it up had I known.
I knew so little about it, I didn't even know it was am RPG, much less a turn based one. Got to pick this up some time. And yeah, you're right, it would be a fantastic addition to Steam.
Yes, it definitely still would be!
@@Xygor I would get it immediately if it ever gets a Steam release. Hope that's a possibility some day. We've gotten a lot of other older rpgs on Steam in the past few years.
So lucky I got both XBox 360 and PS3 back in late 2008, both systems had their share of exclusive JRPGs and this one for the XBox 360 is the reason why if you want to get all the games you want in a console Gen without missing out on some potential classics, you need to go Multi Platform.
This was back before Consoles were reliant for Online Content like DLC and Micro Transactions.
So I find the early XBox360 and early PS3 JRPGs a goldmine worth collecting knowing back then you had the full game on the disk itself.
True enough. I missed out on most of the Xbox 360 ones.
It was like the next Final Fantasy that wasn't. I grabbed it just because of Nobuo and was so happy I did.
that aim ring seems like a simplified version of the Legend of Dragoon additions.
Yeah, that's a good comparison too!
I read a reddit post the other day that was asking for your favorite unknown games, this was the one I posted!
Nice, good pick!
Wasn't this given away free a few years back? It's arguably the best JRPG of the generation, being a MS exclusive was designed to sell it in Japan. Didn't work. Love to see a UE5 multi-platform remake, deserves to be played. Blue Dragon ain't bad either.
I don't know anything about this, but I agree how good it is.
It was a great game all in all, but the timing mechanics slowed everything down pretty much, which was annoying sometimes.
Fair enough, I've seen this feedback more than I expected!
Likely about to pick this up soon, as I have almost enough rewards points with Microsoft for a $10 gift card and this game is on sale for $6.24. Just randomly stumbled upon it in the store and the name sounded familiar, though I knew nothing about it until now.
It's a can't-miss RPG!
One day I'll get a chance to play this! I've been waiting years but I've never owned an xbox. I've tried emulating it before but had some trouble with Xenia even though my laptop is decently specd out. I'll have to give it another shot soon.
It just needs to go to Steam already, haha.

Just throw in a few Marlboros in those little green death assassins and you have what in my opinion final fantasy 13 should have been. I beat this game and loved every minute of it other than one fight toward the end where you headed to defeat four bosses before they advanced on to I can't remember the name of that land. But in the actual final fantasy 13 I couldn't even defeat the first boss because some complicated game mechanics
Yeah, this would have have made a better Final Fantasy than XIII.
I too always thought Lost Odyssey was the FF13 we never got. It was so much closer in tone/feel to FF9, FF10 and FF12 specifically.
I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH. Never played it once, but the story and presentation are so fun I've watched it three times. One of my favorite hidden little gemstones.
Same here!
It remains a sad tale today, how forgotten/ignored this game has become in the fairly few years since it released. Here is to one day seeing it remastered properly and re-released, physically, preferably, on all modern platforms
Yes, it really is a shame how forgotten it is. Maybe that will be fixed someday if it is remastered, as you suggest.
One of the greatest JRPG-masterpieces buried in outdated console without a proper HD remake... So sad...
Sleep well my dearest Kaim...
Totally. Maybe he will be back again someday though!
At least it is still accessible through backwards compatibility, and functions a lot better on modern Xbox consoles.
